Abstract:We study Green functions for the pressure of stationary Stokes systems in a (possibly unbounded) domain $\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, where $d\ge 2$. We construct the Green function when coefficients are merely measurable in one direction and have Dini mean oscillation in the other directions, and $\Omega$ is such that the divergence equation is solvable there. We also establish global pointwise bounds for the Green function and its derivatives when coefficients have Dini mean oscillation and $\Omega$ has a $C^{1,\rm{Dini}}$ boundary. Green functions for the flow velocity of Stokes systems are also considered.

Abstract:Stieltjes boundary problems generalize the customary class of well-posed two-point boundary value problems in three independent directions, regarding the specification of the boundary conditions: (1) They allow more than two evaluation points. (2) They allow derivatives of arbitrary order. (3) Global terms in the form of definite integrals are allowed. Assuming the Stieltjes boundary problem is regular (a unique solution exists for every forcing function), there are symbolic methods for computing the associated Green's operator. In the classical case of well-posed two-point boundary value problems, it is known how to transform the Green's operator into the so-called Green's function, the representation usually preferred by physicists and engineers. In this paper we extend this transformation to the whole class of Stieltjes boundary problems. It turns out that the extension (1) leads to more case distinction, (2) implies ill-posed problems and hence distributional terms, (3) has apparently no effect on the structure of the Green's function.

Abstract:We obtain weighted mixed norm Sobolev estimates in the whole space for nonstationary Stokes equations in divergence and nondivergence form with variable viscosity coefficients that are merely measurable in time variable and have small mean oscillation in spatial variables in small cylinders. As an application, we prove interior mixed norm derivative estimates for solutions to both equations. We also discuss boundary mixed norm Hessian estimates for solutions to equations in nondivergence form under the Lions boundary conditions.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to investigate Green's function for parabolic and elliptic systems satisfying a possibly nonlocal Robin-type boundary condition. We construct Green's function for parabolic systems with time-dependent coefficients satisfying a possibly nonlocal Robin-type boundary condition assuming that weak solutions of the system are locally Hölder continuous in the interior of the domain, and as a corollary we construct Green's function for elliptic system with a Robin-type condition. Also, we obtain Gaussian bound for Robin Green's function under an additional assumption that weak solutions of Robin problem are locally bounded up to the boundary. We provide some examples satisfying such a local boundedness property, and thus have Gaussian bounds for their Green's functions.

Abstract:We give a novel vorticity formulation for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Via a resolvent argument, we obtain Green's function and establish an upper bound, which is the 3D analog of [24]. Moreover, we prove similar results for the corresponding Stokes problem with more general mixed boundary conditions.

The discrete spaces are based on the Scott-Vogelius finite element pair of arbitrary polynomial degree greater than 2. By combining the Piola transform with the classical isoparametric framework, and with a judicious choice of degrees of freedom, we prove that the method converges with optimal order in the energy norm. We also show that the discrete velocity error converges with optimal order in the -norm. Numerical experiments are presented, which support the theoretical results.

Abstract:We consider the Stokes equations subject to Navier boundary conditions on a two-dimensional wedge domain with opening angle $\theta_0 \in (0,\,\pi)$. We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions with optimal regularity in an $L^p$-setting. The results are based on optimal regularity results for the Stokes equations subject to perfect slip boundary conditions on a two-dimensional wedge domain that have been obtained by the authors in [15]. Based on a detailed study of the corresponding trace operator on anisotropic Sobolev-Slobodeckij type function spaces on a two-dimensional wedge domain we are able to generalize the results proved in [15] to the case of inhomogeneous boundary conditions. Existence and uniqueness of solutions to the Stokes equations subject to (inhomogeneous) Navier boundary conditions are then obtained using a perturbation argument.

Abstract:We use the 2D general solutions of orthotropic electro-magneto-thermo-elastic material to construct the 2D Green's function for a steady line heat source in the interior of two-phase orthotropic electro-magneto-thermo-elastic plane by ten newly introduced harmonic functions with undetermined constants. The corresponding coupled field can be obtained by substituting these functions into the general solution, and the undetermined constants can be obtained by the continuous conditions and equilibrium conditions. All components of coupled field are expressed in terms of elementary functions and are convenient to use.

Abstract:We study the Stokes system with the localized boundary data in the half-space. We are concerned with the local regularity of its solution near the boundary away from the support of the given boundary data which are in the product forms of each spatial variable and the temporal variable. We first show that if the boundary data are smooth in time, the corresponding solutions are also smooth in space and time near the boundary, even if the boundary data are only spatially integrable. Secondly, if the normal component of the boundary data is absent, we are able to construct a solution such that the second normal derivatives of its tangential components become singular near the boundary. Perturbation argument enables us to construct solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations with similar singular behaviors near the boundary in the half-space as the case of Stokes system. Lastly, we provide specific types of the localized boundary data to obtain the pointwise bounds of the solutions up to second derivatives. It turns out that such solutions are globally strong, while the second normal derivatives are unbounded near the boundary. These results can be compared to the previous works in which only the normal component is present. In fact, the non-smooth tangential boundary data in time can also cause spatially singular behaviors of the solution near the boundary, although such behaviors are milder than those caused by the normal boundary data of the same type.

Abstract:We study the d'Alembert equation with a boundary. We introduce the notions of Rayleigh surface wave operators, delayed/advanced mirror images, wave recombinations, and wave cancellations. This allows us to obtain the complete and simple formula of the Green's functions for the wave equation with the presence of various boundary conditions. We are able to determine whether a Rayleigh surface wave is active or virtual, and study the lacunas of the wave equation in three dimensional with the presence of a boundary in the case of a virtual Rayleigh surface wave.

Abstract:This paper is a revised version of the original paper of same title--published in Applied Mathematics Letters 89--containing some corrections and clarifications to the original text. We derive non-singular Green's functions for the unbounded Poisson equation in one, two and three dimensions, using a cut-off function in the Fourier domain to impose a smallest length scale when deriving the Green's function. The resulting non-singular Green's functions are relevant to applications which are restricted to a minimum resolved length scale (e.g. a mesh size h) and thus cannot handle the singular Green's function of the continuous Poisson equation. We furthermore derive the gradient vector of the non-singular Green's function, as this is useful in applications where the Poisson equation represents potential functions of a vector field.

Singular weak solutions near boundaries in a half space away from localized force for the Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations

Abstract:We prove that there exists a weak solution of the Stokes system with a non-zero external force and no-slip boundary conditions in a half space of dimensions three and higher so that its normal derivatives are unbounded near boundary. A localized and divergence free singular force causes, via non-local effect, singular behaviors of normal derivatives for the solution near boundary, although such boundary is away from the support of the external force. The constructed one is a weak solution that has finite energy globally, and it can be comparable to the one in \cite{Seregin-Sverak10} as a form of a shear flow that is of only locally finite energy. Similar construction is performed for the Navier-Stokes equations as well.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the global $L^q$ estimates for the weak solution of the steady p-Stokes equations describing the motion of the shear-thinning flow under the nonslip boundary condition. Our interest is a non-smooth domain whose boundary can go beyond the Lipschitz category, and the coefficients belong to BMO(Bounded Mean Oscillation) space with sufficiently small BMO semi-norm.

Abstract:This paper studies the Neumann boundary value problems for the Stokes equations in a convex domain in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We obtain nontangential-maximal-function estimates in $L^p$ and $W^{1, p}$ estimates for $p$ in certain ranges depending on $d$. These ranges are larger than the known ranges for Lipschitz domains. The proof relies on a $W^{2, 2}$ estimate for the Stokes equations in convex domains.

Abstract:In this study, the nonconforming finite elements of order two and order three are constructed and exploited for the Stokes problem. The moments of order up to k-1 (k=2,3) on all the facets of the tetrahedron are used for DoFs (degrees of freedom) to construct the unisolvent k-order nonconforming finite element with the bubble function space of P_k+1 explicitly represented. The pair of the k-order element and the discontinuous piecewise P_k is proved to be stable for solving the Stokes problem with the element-wise divergence-free condition preserved. The main difficulty in establishing the discrete inf-sup condition comes from the fact that the usual Fortin operator can not be constructed. Thanks to the explicit representation of the bubble functions, its divergence space is proved to be identical to the orthogonal complement space of constants with respect to P_k on the tetrahedron, which plays an important role to overcome the aforementioned difficulty and leads to the desirable well-posedness of the discrete problem. Furthermore, a reduced k-order nonconforming finite element with a discontinuous piecewise P_k-1 is designed and proved to be stable for solving the Stokes problem. The lack of the Fortin operator causes difficulty in analyzing the discrete inf-sup condition for the reduced third-order element pair. To deal with this problem, the so-called macro-element technique is adopted with a crucial algebraic result concerning the property of functions in the orthogonal complement space of the divergence of the discrete velocity space with respect to the discrete pressure space on the macro-element. Numerical experiments are provided to validate the theoretical results.
Regularity of elliptic equations in double divergence form and applications to Green's function estimates

Abstract:We investigate the regularity of elliptic equations in double divergence form, with leading coefficients satisfying the Dini mean oscillation condition. We prove that the solutions are differentiable on the zero level set and derive a pointwise bound for the derivative. As an application, we establish global pointwise estimates for the Green's function of second-order uniformly elliptic operators in non-divergence form, considering Dini mean oscillation coefficients in bounded $C^{1,1}$ domains.
