Abstract:It is proved in \cite{BP} (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1108.2717" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1108.2717">arXiv:1108.2717</a>) that the category of relative 3-dimensional cobordisms $\cal Cob^{2+1}$ is equivalent to the universal algebraic category $\overline{\overline{\cal H}}{}^r$ generated by a Hopf algebra object. A different algebraic category $\overline{\cal Alg}$ generated by a Hopf algebra object is defined in \cite{AS} and it conjectured to be equivalent to $\cal Cob^{2+1}$ as well. We prove that there exists a functor $\overline{\cal Alg}\to \overline{\overline{\cal H}}{}^r$, and use it to present an alternative set of axioms for $\overline{\overline{\cal H}}{}^r$.

Abstract:We develop a graphical calculus of manifold diagrams which generalises string and surface diagrams to arbitrary dimensions. Manifold diagrams are pasting diagrams for $(\infty, n)$-categories that admit a semi-strict composition operation for which associativity and unitality is strict. The weak interchange law satisfied by composition of manifold diagrams is determined geometrically through isotopies of diagrams. By building upon framed combinatorial topology, we can classify critical points in isotopies at which the arrangement of cells changes. This allows us to represent manifold diagrams combinatorially and use them as shapes with which to probe $(\infty, n)$-categories, presented as $n$-fold Segal spaces. Moreover, for any system of labels for the singularities in a manifold diagram, we show how to generate a free $(\infty, n)$-category.

Abstract:In category theory, the use of string diagrams is well known to aid in the intuitive understanding of certain concepts, particularly when dealing with adjunctions and monoidal categories. We show that string diagrams are also useful in exploring fundamental properties of basic concepts in category theory, such as universal properties, (co)limits, Kan extensions, and (co)ends. For instance, string diagrams are utilized to represent visually intuitive proofs of the Yoneda lemma, necessary and sufficient conditions for being adjunctions, the fact that right adjoints preserve limits (RAPL), and necessary and sufficient conditions for having pointwise Kan extensions. We also introduce a method for intuitively calculating (co)ends using diagrammatic representations and employ it to prove several properties of (co)ends and weighted (co)limits. This paper proposes that using string diagrams is an effective approach for beginners in category theory to learn the fundamentals of the subject in an intuitive and understandable way.

A diagrammatic calculus for categorical quantum protocols

Abstract:As shown by Abramsky and Coecke, quantum mechanics can be studied in terms of dagger compact closed categories with biproducts. Within this structure, many well-known quantum protocols can be described and their validity can be shown by establishing the commutativity of certain diagrams in that category. In this paper, we propose an explicit realisation of a category with enough structure to check the validity of a certain class of quantum protocols. In order to do this, we construct a category based on 1-dimensional cobordisms with attached elements of a certain group freely generated by a finite set. We use this category as a graphical language, and we show that it is dagger compact closed with biproducts. Then, relying on the coherence result for compact closed categories, proved by Kelly and Laplaza, we show the coherence result, which enables us to check the validity of quantum protocols just by drawing diagrams. In particular, we show the validity of quantum teleportation, entanglement swapping (as formulated in the work of Abramsky and Coecke) and superdense coding protocol.

We show that the morphism spaces of these categories have linear bases given by planar rook diagrams, rook diagrams, rook-Brauer diagrams, and Motzkin diagrams.

Abstract:This is a book on higher-categorical diagrams, including pasting diagrams. It aims to provide a thorough and modern reference on the subject, collecting, revisiting and expanding results scattered across the literature, informed by recent advances and practical experience with higher-dimensional diagram rewriting. We approach the subject as a kind of directed combinatorial topology: a diagram is a map from a "directed cell complex", encoded combinatorially as a face poset together with orientation data. Unlike previous expositions, we adopt from the beginning a functorial viewpoint, focussing on morphisms and categorical constructions. We do not tie ourselves to a specific model of higher categories, and instead treat diagrams as independent combinatorial structures that admit functorial interpretations in various contexts. Topics covered include the theory of layerings of diagrams; acyclicity properties and their consequences; constructions including Gray products, suspensions, and joins; special shapes such as globes, oriented simplices, cubes, and positive opetopes; the interpretation of diagrams in strict omega-categories and their geometric realisation as simplicial and CW complexes; and Steiner's theory of directed chain complexes.

Abstract:Whereas string diagrams for strict monoidal categories are well understood, and have found application in several fields of Computer Science, graphical formalisms for non-strict monoidal categories are far less studied. In this paper, we provide a presentation by generators and relations of string diagrams for non-strict monoidal categories, and show how this construction can handle applications in domains such as digital circuits and programming languages. We prove the correctness of our construction, which yields a novel proof of Mac Lane's strictness theorem. This in turn leads to an elementary graphical proof of Mac Lane's coherence theorem, and in particular allows for the inductive construction of the canonical isomorphisms in a monoidal category.

Abstract:Cobordism categories are known to be compact closed. They can therefore be used to define non-degenerate models of multiplicative linear logic by combining the Int construction with double glueing. In this work we detail such construction in the case of low-dimensional cobordisms, and exhibit a connexion between those models and the model of Interaction graphs introduced by Seiller. In particular, we exhibit how the so-called trefoil property is a consequence of the associativity of composition of higher structures, providing a first step toward establishing models as obtained from a double glueing construction. We discuss possible extensions to higher-dimensional cobordisms categories

Abstract:Developing an idea of Kapranov and Voevodsky, we introduce a model of weak omega-categories based on directed complexes, combinatorial presentations of pasting diagrams. We propose this as a convenient framework for higher-dimensional rewriting. We define diagrammatic sets to be presheaves on a category of directed complexes presenting pasting diagrams with spherical boundaries. Diagrammatic sets have structural face and degeneracy operations, but no structural composition. We define a notion of equivalence cell in a diagrammatic set, and say that a diagrammatic set is representable if all pasting diagrams with spherical boundaries are connected to individual cells -- their weak composites -- by a higher-dimensional equivalence cell. We develop the basic theory of representable diagrammatic sets (RDSs), and prove that equivalence cells satisfy the expected properties in an RDS. We study nerves of strict omega-categories as RDSs and prove that 2-truncated RDSs are equivalent to bicategories. Finally, we connect the combinatorics of diagrammatic sets and simplicial sets, and prove a version of the homotopy hypothesis for "groupoidal" RDSs: there exists a geometric realisation functor for diagrammatic sets, inducing isomorphisms between combinatorial and classical homotopy groups, which has a homotopical right inverse.

Gray categories with duals and their diagrams

Abstract:The geometric and algebraic properties of Gray categories with duals are investigated by means of a diagrammatic calculus. The diagrams are three-dimensional stratifications of a cube, with regions, surfaces, lines and vertices labelled by Gray category data. These can be viewed as a generalisation of ribbon diagrams. The Gray categories present two types of duals, which are extended to functors of strict tricategories with natural isomorphisms, and correspond directly to symmetries of the diagrams. It is shown that these functors can be strictified so that the symmetries of a cube are realised exactly. A new condition on Gray categories with duals called the spatial condition is defined. A class of diagrams for which the evaluation for spatial Gray categories is invariant under homeomorphisms is exhibited. This relation between the geometry of the diagrams and structures in the Gray categories proves useful in computations and has potential applications in topological quantum field theory.

Abstract:We introduce a discrete cobordism category for nested manifolds and nested cobordisms between them. A variation of stratified Morse theory applies in this case, and yields generators for a general nested cobordism category. Restricting to a low-dimensional example of the ``striped cylinder'' cobordism category Cyl, we give a complete set of relations for the generators. With an eye towards the study of TQFTs defined on a nested cobordism category, we describe functors Cyl$\to\mathcal{C}$, which we call Cyl-objects in $\mathcal{C}$, and show that they are related to known algebraic structures such as Temperley-Lieb algebras and cyclic objects. We moreover define novel algebraic constructions inspired by the structure of Cyl-objects, namely a doubling construction on cyclic objects analogous to edgewise subdivision, and a cylindrical bar construction on self-dual objects in a monoidal category.

Abstract:Premonoidal categories are monoidal categories without the interchange law; effectful categories are premonoidal categories with a chosen monoidal subcategory of interchanging morphisms. In the same sense that string diagrams, pioneered by Joyal and Street, are an internal language for monoidal categories, we show that string diagrams with an added 'runtime wire', pioneered by Alan Jeffrey, are an internal language for effectful categories and can be used as string diagrams for effectful, premonoidal and Freyd categories.

Abstract:The data for many useful bidirectional constructions in applied category theory (optics, learners, games, quantum combs) can be expressed in terms of diagrams containing "holes" or "incomplete parts", sometimes known as comb diagrams. We give a possible formalization of what these circuits with incomplete parts represent in terms of symmetric monoidal categories, using the dinaturality equivalence relations arising from a coend. Our main idea is to extend this formal description to allow for infinite circuits with holes indexed by the natural numbers. We show how infinite combs over an arbitrary symmetric monoidal category form again a symmetric monoidal category where notions of delay and feedback can be considered. The constructions presented here are still preliminary work.

Abstract:We give a presentation for a non-split compact surface embedded in the 3-sphere by using diagrams of spatial trivalent graphs equipped with signs and we define Reidemeister moves for such signed diagrams. We show that two diagrams of embedded surfaces are related by Reidemeister moves if and only if the surfaces represented by the diagrams are ambient isotopic in the 3-sphere.

Abstract:Lifts of categorical diagrams $D\colon\mathsf{J}\to\mathsf{X}$ against discrete opfibrations $\pi\colon\mathsf{E}\to\mathsf{X}$ can be interpreted as presenting solutions to systems of equations. With this interpretation in mind, it is natural to ask if there is a notion of equivalence of diagrams $D\simeq D'$ that precisely captures the idea of the two diagrams "having the same solutions''. We give such a definition, and then show how the localisation of the category of diagrams in $\mathsf{X}$ along such equivalences is isomorphic to the localisation of the slice category $\mathsf{Cat}/\mathsf{X}$ along the class of initial functors. Finally, we extend this result to the 2-categorical setting, proving the analogous statement for any locally presentable 2-category in place of $\mathsf{Cat}$.
