Abstract:It will be shown to be consistent that there are at least two non-isomorphic selective ultrafilters, but no stable ordered-union ultrafilters. This answers a question of Blass from his 1987 paper which introduced the concept of a stable ordered-union ultrafilter.

Abstract:We survey some recent results about the order structure of various kinds of ultrafilters. More precisely, we study Rudin-Keisler and Tukey reducibility in classes of selective, stable ordered-union, and P-point ultrafilters. Although these reductions are fundamentally different, there are connections between them. On the other hand, even though the classes of ultrafilters we consider are similar, there are significant differences in their order structure, as will be seen in the survey.

Abstract:Answering a question of Dobrinen and Todorcevic, we prove that below any stable ordered-union ultrafilter $\mathcal{U}$, there are exactly four nonprincipal Tukey classes: $[\mathcal{U}], [\mathcal{U}_{\operatorname{min}}], [\mathcal{U}_{\operatorname{max}}]$, and $[\mathcal{U}_{\operatorname{minmax}}]$. This parallels the classification of ultrafilters Rudin-Keisler below $\mathcal{U}$ by Blass. A key step in the proof involves modifying the proof of a canonization theorem of Klein and Spinas for Borel functions on $\mathrm{FIN}^{[\infty]}$ to obtain a simplified canonization theorem for fronts on $\mathrm{FIN}^{[\infty]}$, recovering Lefmann's canonization for fronts of finite uniformity rank as a special case. We use this to classify the Rudin-Keisler classes of all ultrafilters Tukey below $\mathcal{U}$, which is then applied to achieve the main result.

Abstract:Using a new concept of conglomerated filter we demonstrate in a purely combinatorial way that none of Erdös-Ulam filters or summable filters can be generated by a single statistical measure and consequently they cannot be represented as intersections of countable families of ulrafilters. Abstract:We exhibit a forcing for producing a model with no nowhere dense ultrafilters that satisfies the full Sacks Property. By interleaving this forcing with other forcing notions, a model containing a $(2, {\aleph}_{0})$-selective ultrafilter, but no nowhere dense ultrafilters is produced. It is thus proved that the existence of $(2, {\aleph}_{0})$-selective ultrafilters does not imply the existence of nowhere dense ultrafilters.

Abstract:Geschke, Lubarsky, and Rahn in ``Choice and the Hat Game''~\cite{choice-and-the-hat-game} generalize the classic hat game puzzle to infinitely-many players and ask whether every model of set theory without choice in which the optimal solution can be carried out contains either a nonprincipal ultrafilter on $\mathbb N$ or else a Vitali set. A negative answer is obtained here by constructing a model in which there is an optimal solution to the hat game puzzle but no nonprincipal ultrafilter on $\mathbb N$ and no Vitali set. This is accomplished in a more general setting, establishing that for any Borel bipartite graph $\Gamma$ not embedding some $K_{n,\omega_1}$ and with countable colouring number there is a model of $\mbox{ZF} + \mbox{DC}$ in which $\Gamma$ has a $2$-colouring but there is no ultrafilter as above or Vitali set. The same conclusion applies to the natural generalization of the hat game to an arbitrary finite number of hat colours.

Abstract:We present three models concerning Tukey types of ultrafilters on $\omega$. The first model is built via a countable support iteration, and we show there is no basically generated ultrafilter in such model. The second and third models are built upon different and novel techniques, and in such models all ultrafilters are Tukey top, thus providing an answer to the Isbell problem. In all models there is no $\mathsf{nwd}$-ultrafilter.

Abstract:An extension of the divisibility relation on $\mathbb{N}$ to the set $\beta\mathbb{N}$ of ultrafilters on $\mathbb{N}$ was defined and investigated in several papers during the last ten years. Here we make a survey of results obtained so far, adding several results connecting the themes of different stages of the research. The highlights include: separation of $\beta\mathbb{N}$ into the lower part $L$ (with its division into levels) and the upper part; identifying basic ingredients (powers of primes) and fragmentation of each ultrafilter into them; finding the corresponding upward closed sets belonging to an ultrafilter with given basic ingredients; existence and number of successors and predecessors of a given divisibility class; extending the congruence relation (in two ways) and checking properties of the obtained relations.

Abstract:We characterize the Tukey order, the Galvin property/Cohesive ultrafilters from \cite{Kanamori1978} in terms of ultrapowers. We use this characterization to measure the distance between the Tukey order and other well-known orders of ultrafilters. Secondly, we improve two theorems of Kanamori \cite{Kanamori1978} from the 70's. We then study the point spectrum and the depth spectrum of an ultrafilter, and give a simple answer to Kanamori's question \cite[Question 2]{Kanamori1978} starting from a supercompact cardinal. Finally, we prove some consistency results regarding the depth spectrum of an ultrafilter, starting from the optimal assumption of $o(\kappa)=\kappa^{++}$, using a Woodin-like surgery argument.

Abstract:A divisibility relation on ultrafilters is defined as follows: ${\cal F}\hspace{1mm}\widetilde{\mid}\hspace{1mm}{\cal G}$ if and only if every set in $\cal F$ upward closed for divisibility also belongs to $\cal G$. After describing the first $\omega$ levels of this quasiorder, in this paper we generalize the process of determining the basic divisors of an ultrafilter. First we describe these basic divisors, obtained as (equivalence classes of) powers of prime ultrafilters. Using methods of nonstandard analysis we determine the pattern of an ultrafilter: the collection of its basic divisors as well as the multiplicity of each of them. All such patterns have a certain closure property in an appropriate topology. We isolate the family of sets belonging to every ultrafilter with a given pattern. We show that every pattern with the closure property is realized by an ultrafilter. Finally, we apply patterns to obtain an equivalent condition for an ultrafilter to be self-divisible.

Abstract:We study some topics about Łoś's theorem without assuming the Axiom of Choice. We prove that Łoś's fundamental theorem of ultraproducts is equivalent to a weak form that every ultrapower is elementary equivalent to its source structure. On the other hand, it is consistent that there is a structure $M$ and an ultrafilter $U$ such that the ultrapower of $M$ by $U$ is elementary equivalent to $M$, but the fundamental theorem for the ultrapower of $M$ by $U$ fails. We also show that weak fragments of the Axiom of Choice, such as the Countable Choice, do not follow from Łoś's theorem, even assuming the existence of non-principal ultrafilters.

Abstract:Good frames were suggested in [Sh:h] as the (bare-bones) parallel, in the context of AECs, to superstable (among elementary classes). Here we consider $(\mu,\lambda,\kappa)$-frames as candidates for being (in the context of AECs) the correct parallel to the class of $|T|^+$-saturated models of a strictly stable theory (among elementary classes). One thing we lose compared to the superstable case is that going up by induction on cardinals is problematic (for stages of small cofinality). But this arises only when we try to lift such classes to higher cardinals. Also, we may use, as a replacement, the existence of prime models over unions of increasing chains. For this context we investigate the dimension.
