Abstract:Reactive force fields for molecular dynamics have enabled a wide range of studies in numerous material classes. These force fields are computationally inexpensive as compared to electronic structure calculations and allow for simulations of millions of atoms. However, the accuracy of traditional force fields is limited by their functional forms, preventing continual refinement and improvement. Therefore, we develop a neural network based reactive interatomic potential for the prediction of the mechanical, thermal, and chemical response of energetic materials at extreme conditions for energetic materials. The training set is expanded in an automatic iterative approach and consists of various CHNO materials and their reactions under ambient and under shock loading conditions. This new potential shows improved accuracy over the current state of the art force fields for a wide range of properties such as detonation performance, decomposition product formation, and vibrational spectra under ambient and shock loading conditions.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to predict the mechanical, thermal and chemical responses of energetic materials more accurately under extreme conditions (such as high pressure and high temperature). Although the traditional force - field method has an advantage in computational cost, its accuracy is limited by the functional form and cannot be continuously improved. Therefore, the researchers developed a Neural Network Reactive Force Field (NNRF) to improve the performance prediction accuracy of energetic materials under extreme conditions. Specifically, this research aims to: 1. **Improve prediction accuracy**: Use neural networks to construct reactive force fields to improve the prediction accuracy of the mechanical, thermal and chemical responses of energetic materials under extreme conditions. This includes the prediction of explosion performance, decomposition product formation and vibration spectra, etc. 2. **Expand the training set**: Expand the training set by an automatic iterative method so that it contains various CHNO materials and their reactions under normal temperature and shock - loading conditions. This helps the model generalize better to different types of energetic materials. 3. **Improve performance under high - pressure conditions**: Pay special attention to chemical reactions under high - pressure conditions, because this is crucial for understanding the behavior of energetic materials under typical operating conditions (such as shock initiation and explosion). The researchers further optimized the NNRF model by adding data on high - pressure and shock - induced decomposition. 4. **Verify the validity of the model**: Verify the effectiveness and superiority of the NNRF model in predicting the performance of energetic materials by comparing it with experimental data and other existing models (such as ReaxFF). This includes the prediction of decomposition products, infrared spectra, thermal decomposition and shock - induced chemical reactions. In summary, the main objective of this paper is to improve the accuracy and reliability of performance prediction of energetic materials under extreme conditions by developing and optimizing the neural - network - based reactive force field.
