Abstract:A superconducting qubit coupled to a read-out resonator is currently the building block of multiple quantum computing as well as quantum optics experiments. A typical qubit-resonator system is coupled in the dispersive regime, where the detuning between qubit and resonator is much greater than the coupling between them. In this work, we fabricated and measured a superconducting transmon-resonator system in the non-dispersive regime. The dressed states formed by the mixing of the bare qubit and resonator states can be further mixed by applying a drive on the qubit, leading to the formation of polariton states. We report experimental studies of transitions between polariton states at varying driving powers and frequencies and show how the non-dispersive coupling of the higher levels of the qubit-resonator system modifies the polariton eigenstates and the corresponding transition frequencies. We also report close agreement with numerical results obtained from a driven Jaynes-Cummings Model beyond the dispersive regime.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the characteristics of polariton states and their conversion behaviors under different driving powers and frequencies in the superconducting qubit - resonator coupling system within the non - dispersive regime. Specifically, the researchers are concerned with how the polariton states of the system are formed and how the conversion frequencies between these states change when the coupling strength between the qubit (especially its transition from the first excited state to the second excited state) and the resonator is close to or greater than the detuning between them. This is in contrast to the traditional dispersive regime studies, in which the coupling strength is much smaller than the detuning, leading to an approximate and simplified treatment of the system's behavior. ### Research Background and Motivation In superconducting quantum computing and quantum optics experiments, the coupling between a superconducting qubit (such as a transmon) and a read - out resonator is a fundamental building block. Usually, this coupling occurs within the dispersive regime, that is, the detuning between the qubit and the resonator is much greater than the coupling strength between them. However, this paper explores the coupling situation within the non - dispersive regime in order to explore a wider range of possibilities for quantum state manipulation, especially in terms of the formation and manipulation of polariton states. By operating within the non - dispersive regime, researchers can observe the effects of non - dispersive coupling of higher - order energy levels on the polariton eigenstates and the corresponding conversion frequencies, which are difficult to achieve within the traditional dispersive regime. ### Main Research Contents 1. **System Description**: The researchers constructed a system consisting of a superconducting transmon qubit and a lumped - element resonator and operated it within the non - dispersive regime. By applying a driving field to the qubit, they further mixed the dressed states formed by the bare qubit and bare resonator states, thus forming polariton states. 2. **Experimental Measurement**: The researchers performed spectroscopic measurements of polariton state conversions under different driving powers and frequencies and demonstrated how non - dispersive coupling modifies the polariton eigenstates and the corresponding conversion frequencies in the higher - level qubit - resonator system. 3. **Theoretical Simulation**: The researchers also reported good agreement with numerical results obtained from the driven Jaynes - Cummings model beyond the dispersive regime. Through eigenmode analysis and master equation calculations, they simulated polariton conversions and explained the qualitative differences in polariton conversions between the non - dispersive regime and the dispersive regime. ### Conclusion This research not only provides experimental evidence for operating the superconducting qubit - resonator system within the non - dispersive regime but also delves into the characteristics and conversion mechanisms of polariton states in this operating mode, providing a new perspective and technical basis for future applications in the fields of quantum computing and quantum optics.
