Abstract:In this paper, we provide a systematic discretization of the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand (BGG) diagrams and complexes over cubical meshes of arbitrary dimension via the use of tensor-product structures of one-dimensional piecewise-polynomial spaces, such as spline and finite element spaces. We demonstrate the construction of the Hessian, the elasticity, and the divdiv complexes as examples for our construction.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve
This paper aims to provide a systematic method for discretizing Bernstein - Gelfand - Gelfand (BGG) diagrams and complexes on cube grids of arbitrary dimensions. Specifically, the authors achieve this goal through one - dimensional piecewise polynomial spaces with tensor product structures (such as spline and finite element spaces).
#### Main problems and background
1. **Deficiencies in existing research**:
- Although there are some discretization works on specific BGG complexes currently, systematically discretizing the entire BGG machinery and its underlying mathematical structure in arbitrary dimensions remains a gap.
- This gap limits the application of BGG constructions in numerical calculations, especially for solving complex differential equations.
2. **Key challenges**:
- How to ensure that the discretized BGG diagrams and complexes retain algebraic properties at the continuous level, such as commutativity and homology.
- It is necessary to construct appropriate discrete spaces at the discrete level and verify that these spaces meet the conditions required by the BGG construction.
#### Specific contributions of the paper
- **Systematic discretization method**: The paper proposes a systematic discretization method based on tensor product structures, which is applicable to cube grids of arbitrary dimensions.
- **Specific examples**: It shows how to construct Hessian complexes, elastic complexes, and divdiv complexes, etc. through specific examples.
- **Theoretical guarantees**: It is proved that the proposed discretization method can preserve the key properties of the BGG construction, such as commutativity and homology.
- **Numerical stability**: It provides quasi - interpolation operators with bounded commutation, ensuring the stability of the numerical scheme.
#### Mathematical formulas
To ensure the correctness and readability of the formulas, the following are some key formulas involved in the paper:
1. **Definition of BGG diagrams**:
\[
\begin{array}{cccccc}
0 & \rightarrow & Z_0 & \rightarrow & Z_1 & \rightarrow \cdots \rightarrow Z_n \rightarrow 0 \\
& & \downarrow S_0 & & \downarrow S_1 & \\
0 & \rightarrow & \tilde{Z}_0 & \rightarrow & \tilde{Z}_1 & \rightarrow \cdots \rightarrow \tilde{Z}_n \rightarrow 0
\end{array}
\]
2. **Construction of discrete BGG complexes**:
\[
\mathbf{S}_{\vec{p}}^{\vec{r}}\Lambda^{k,l} := \bigoplus_{(s_1, \cdots, s_n) \in X_k} \bigoplus_{(t_1, \cdots, t_n) \in X_l} S_{p_1 - s_1 - t_1}^{r_1 - s_1 - t_1}\Lambda^{s_1,t_1}(I) \otimes \cdots \otimes S_{p_n - s_n - t_n}^{r_n - s_n - t_n}\Lambda^{s_n,t_n}(I)
\]
3. **Definition of exterior derivatives**:
\[
d_k(u_1 \otimes \cdots \otimes u_n) = \sum_{s = 1}^n (-1)^{|i|_s - 1} (u_1 \otimes \cdots \otimes d u_s \otimes \cdots \otimes u_n)
\]
4. **Properties of quasi - interpolation operators**:
\[
d_k \pi_{k,l}^{\otimes n} = \pi_
