Abstract:We study the irreducible representations of simple algebraic groups in which some non-central semisimple element has at most one eigenvalue of multiplicity greater than 1. We bound the multiplicity of this eigenvalue in terms of the rank of the group.

Abstract:Let G be one of the classical Lie groups GL(n+1)(R), GL(n+1)(C), U(p, q + 1), O(p, q + 1), On+1(C), SO(p, q + 1), SOn+1(C), and let G' be respectively the subgroup GL(n)(R), GL(n)(C), U(p, q), O(p, q), O-n(C), SO(p, q), SO (C), embedded in G in the standard way. We show that every irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of G' occurs with multiplicity at most one in every irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of G. Abstract:Let $H$ be a linear algebraic group whose connected component $G\neq 1$ is simple and $H/G$ is cyclic. We determine the irreducible projective representations $\phi$ of $H$ such that $\phi(G)$ is irreducible and $\phi(h)$ has simple spectrum for some $h\in H$. The latter means that all irreducible constituents of the group $\phi( \langle h\rangle)$ are of multiplicity 1. (Here $\langle h\rangle$ is the subgroup of $H$ generated by $h$.) This extends an earlier known result for $H=G$.

Abstract:Let g be a finite-dimensional complex semisimple Lie algebra and b a Borel subalgebra. Then g acts on its exterior algebra boolean AND g naturally. We prove that the maximal eigenvalue of the Casimir operator on boolean AND g is one third of the dimension of g, that the maximal eigenvalue m(i) of the Casimir operator on. boolean AND(i)g is increasing for 0 <= i <= r, where r is the number of positive roots, and that the corresponding eigenspace M-i is a multiplicity-free g-module whose highest weight vectors correspond to certain ad-nilpotent ideals of b. We also obtain a result describing the set of weights of the irreducible representation of g with highest weight a multiple of rho, where rho is one half the sum of positive roots.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the asymptotics of multiplicities of irreducible representations in large tensor products of finite dimensional representations of simple Lie algebras and their statistics with respect to Plancherel and character probability measures. We derive the asymptotic distribution of irreducible components for the Plancherel measure, generalizing results of Biane and Tate and Zelditch. We also derive the asymptotics of the character measure for generic parameters and an intermediate scaling in the vicinity of the Plancherel measure. It is interesting that the asymptotic measure is universal and after suitable renormalization does not depend on which representations were multiplied but depends significantly on the degeneracy of the parameter in the character distribution.

Abstract:We revisit two papers which appeared in 1999: [1] M. Hoffmann-Ostenhof, T. Hoffmann-Ostenhof, and N. Nadirashvili. On the multiplicity of eigenvalues of the Laplacian on surfaces. Ann. Global Anal. Geom. 17 (1999) 43--48. [2] T. Hoffmann-Ostenhof, P. Michor, and N. Nadirashvili. Bounds on the multiplicity of eigenvalues for fixed membranes. Geom. Funct. Anal. 9 (1999) 1169--1188. The main result of these papers is that the multiplicity $\mathrm{mult}(\lambda_k(M))$ of the $k$th eigenvalue of the Riemannian surface $M$ is bounded from above by $(2k-3)$ provided that $k \ge 3$. In [1], $M$ is homeomorphic to a sphere. In [2], $M$ is a plane domain with Dirichlet boundary condition. In both cases, the starting label of eigenvalues is $1$. The proofs given in [1,2] are not very detailed, and often rely on figures or special configurations of nodal sets. The purpose of this monograph is to provide detailed general proofs for the above upper bounds and to extend the results to Robin boundary conditions. When $M$ is homeomorphic to a sphere, we provide a complete proof that $\mathrm{mult}(\lambda_k) \le (2k-3)$ for any $k\ge 3$, by introducing and carefully studying the combinatorial type and a labeling of the nodal domains of some particular eigenfunctions. When $M$ is a plane domain, we consider Dirichlet and Robin boundary conditions and we also study the combinatorial types and a labeling of the nodal domains of some particular eigenfunctions. We prove the inequality $\mathrm{mult}(\lambda_k) \le (2k-2)$ for general $C^{\infty}$ bounded domains and all $k \ge 3$. We prove the inequality $\mathrm{mult}(\lambda_k) \le (2k-3)$ for $k \ge 3$ under the additional assumption that the domain is simply connected.

Abstract:We obtain an upper bound for the dimension of the cuspidal automorphic forms for $\mathrm{GL}_2$ over a number field, whose archimedean local representations are not tempered. More precisely, we prove the following result. Let $F$ be a number field and $\mathbb{A}_{F}$ be the ring of adeles of $F$. Let $\mathcal{O}_{F}$ be the ring of integers of $F$. Let $\mathfrak{X}_{F,\mathrm{ex}}$ be the set of irreducible cuspidal automorphic representations $\pi$ of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{A}_{F})$ with the trivial central character such that for each archimedean place $v$ of $F$, the local representation of $\pi$ at $v$ is an unramified principal series and is not tempered. For an ideal $J$ of $\mathcal{O}_{F}$, let $\mathrm{K}_{0}(J)$ be the subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{A}_{F})$ corresponding to $\Gamma_0(J) \subset \mathrm{SL}_2(\mathcal{O}_F)$. Let $r_1$ be the number of real embeddings of $F$ and $r_2$ be the number of conjugate pairs of complex embeddings of $F$. Using the Arthur-Selberg trace formula, we have \begin{equation*} \sum_{\pi\in \mathfrak{X}_{F,\mathrm{ex}}} \dim \pi^{\mathrm{K}_0(J)} \ll_{F} \frac{[\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathcal{O}_{F}) : \Gamma_0(J)]}{(\log (N_{F/\mathbb{Q}}(J)))^{2r_1+3r_2}} \quad \text{ as } \quad |N_{F/\mathbb{Q}}(J)|\to \infty. \end{equation*} From this result, we obtain the result on an upper bound for the number of Hecke-Maass cusp forms of weight $0$ on $\Gamma_0(N)$ which do not satisfy the Selberg eigenvalue conjecture.

On the irreducible character degrees of symmetric groups and their multiplicities

Abstract:We consider problems concerning the largest degrees of irreducible characters of symmetric groups, and the multiplicities of character degrees of symmetric groups. Using evidence from computer experiments, we posit several new conjectures or extensions of previous conjectures, and prove a number of results. One of these is that, if $n\geq 21$, then there are at least eight irreducible characters of $S_n$, all of which have the same degree, and which have irreducible restriction to $A_n$. We explore similar questions about unipotent degrees of $\GL_n(q)$. We also make some remarks about how the experiments here shed light on posited algorithms for finding the largest irreducible character degree of $S_n$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple linear algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\geq 0$ and let $\phi$ be a $p$-restricted irreducible representation of $G$. Let $T$ be a maximal torus of $G$ and $s\in T$. We say that $s$ is strongly regular if $\alpha(s)\ne\beta(s)$ for all distinct $T$-roots $\alpha$ and $\beta$ of $G$. Our main result states that if all but one of the eigenvalues of $\phi(s)$ are of multiplicity 1 then, with a few specified exceptions, $s$ is strongly regular. This can be viewed as an extension of our earlier result saying that under the same hypotheses, $s$ must be regular and all non-zero weights of $\phi$ are of multiplicity 1.

Abstract:Let K K be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, and let G G be a connected reductive algebraic group over K K . We address the problem of classifying triples ( G , H , V ) (G,H,V) , where H H is a proper connected subgroup of G G , and V V is a finite-dimensional irreducible G G -module such that the restriction of V V to H H is multiplicity-free – that is, each of its composition factors appears with multiplicity 1. A great deal of classical work, going back to Dynkin, Howe, Kac, Stembridge, Weyl and others, and also more recent work of the authors, can be set in this context. In this paper we determine all such triples in the case where H H and G G are both simple algebraic groups of type A A , and H H is embedded irreducibly in G G . While there are a number of interesting familes of such triples ( G , H , V ) (G,H,V) , the possibilities for the highest weights of the representations defining the embeddings H > G H>G and G > G L ( V ) G>GL(V) are very restricted. For example, apart from two exceptional cases, both weights can only have support on at most two fundamental weights; and in many of the examples, one or other of the weights corresponds to the alternating or symmetric square of the natural module for either G G or H H .

Abstract:Let g be a complex simple Lie algebra and Z ( g ) be the center of the universal enveloping algebra U ( g ) . Denote by V λ the finite-dimensional irreducible g -module with highest weight λ. Lehrer and Zhang defined the notion of strongly multiplicity free representations for simple Lie algebras motivated by studying the structure of the endomorphism algebra End U ( g ) ( V λ ⊗ r ) in terms of the quotients of the Kohno's infinitesimal braid algebra. Kostant introduced the g -invariant endomorphism algebras R λ ( g ) = ( End V λ ⊗ U ( g ) ) g and R λ , π ( g ) = ( End V λ ⊗ π ( U ( g ) ) ) g . In this paper, we give some other criteria for a multiplicity free representation to be strongly multiplicity free by classifying the pairs ( g , V λ ) , which are multiplicity free and for such pairs, R λ ( g ) and R λ , π ( g ) are generated by generalizations of the quadratic Casimir elements of Z ( g ) .

Abstract:Hu and Ye conjectured that for a $k$-th order and $n$-dimensional tensor $\mathcal{A}$ with an eigenvalue $\lambda$ and the corresponding eigenvariety $\mathcal{V}_\lambda(\mathcal{A})$, $$\mathrm{am}(\lambda) \ge \sum_{i=1}^\kappa \mathrm{dim}(V_i)(k-1)^{\mathrm{dim}(V_i)-1},$$ where $\mathrm{am}(\lambda)$ is the algebraic multiplicity of $\lambda$, and $V_1,\ldots,V_\kappa$ are all irreducible components of $\mathcal{V}_\lambda(\mathcal{A})$. In this paper, we prove that if $\mathcal{A}$ is a nonnegative weakly irreducible tensor with spectral radius $\rho$, then $\mathrm{am}(\lambda) \ge |\mathbb{V}_\lambda(\mathcal{A})|$ for all eigenvalues $\lambda$ of $\mathcal{A}$ with modulus $\rho$, where $\mathbb{V}_\lambda(\mathcal{A})$ is the projective eigenvariety of $\mathcal{A}$ associated with $\lambda$. Consequently we confirm Hu-Ye's conjecture for the above eigenvalues $\lambda$ of $\mathcal{A}$ and also the least H-eigenvalue of a weakly irreducible $Z$-tensor. We prove several equality cases in Hu-Ye's conjecture for the eigenvalues of the adjacency tensor or Laplacian tensor of uniform hypergraphs.

Abstract:We consider a variant of the strong multiplicity one theorem. Let $\pi_{1}$ and $\pi_{2}$ be two unitary cuspidal automorphic representations for $\mathrm{GL(2)}$ that are not twist-equivalent. We find a lower bound for the lower Dirichlet density of the set of places for which $\left\lvert a_{v}(\pi_{1}) \right\rvert > \left\lvert a_{v}(\pi_{2}) \right\rvert$, where $a_{v}(\pi_{i})$ is the trace of Langlands conjugacy class of $\pi_{i}$ at $v$. One consequence of this result is an improvement on the existing bound on the lower Dirichlet density of the set of places for which $\left\lvert a_{v}(\pi_{1})\right\rvert \neq \left\lvert a_{v}(\pi_{2}) \right\rvert$.

Abstract:We study the spectra of non-regular semisimple elements in irreducible representations of simple algebraic groups. More precisely, we prove that if G is a simply connected simple linear algebraic group and f is a non-trivial irreducible representation of G in some GL(V) for which there exists a non-regular non-central semisimple element s in G such that f(s) has almost simple spectrum, then, with few exceptions, G is of classical type and dim V is minimal possible. Here the spectrum of a diagonalizable matrix is called simple if all eigenvalues are of multiplicity 1, and almost simple if at most one eigenvalue is of multiplicity greater than 1. This yields a kind of characterization of the natural representation (up to their Frobenius twists) of classical algebraic groups in terms of the behavior of semisimple elements.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field. Let $\Pi$ be a principal series representation of $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$ induced from an irreducible cuspidal representation of a Levi subgroup. When $\pi$ is an essentially square integrable representation of $\mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(F)$ we prove that $\mathrm{Hom}_{\mathrm{GL}_{n-1}}(\Pi,\pi) = \mathbb{C}$ and $\mathrm{Ext}^i_{\mathrm{GL}_{n-1}}(\Pi,\pi) = 0$ for all integers $i\geq 1$, with exactly one exception (up to twists), namely, when $\Pi= \nu^{-(\frac{n-1}{2})} \times \nu^{-(\frac{n-3}{2})} \times \ldots \times \nu^{(\frac{n-1}{2})}$ and $\pi$ is the Steinberg. When $\Pi= \nu^{-(\frac{n-1}{2})} \times \nu^{-(\frac{n-3}{2})} \times \ldots \times \nu^{(\frac{n-1}{2})}$ and $\pi$ is the Steinberg of $\mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(F)$, then $\dim \mathrm{Hom}_{\mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(F)}(\Pi,\pi)=n$. We also exhibit specific principal series for which each of the intermediate multiplicities $2, 3, \cdots, (n-1)$ are attained. Along the way, we also give a complete list of those irreducible non-generic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_{n}(F)$ that have the Steinberg of $\mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(F)$ as a quotient upon restriction to $\mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(F)$. We also show that there do not exist non-generic irreducible representations of $\mathrm{GL}_{n}(F)$ that have the generalized Steinberg as a quotient upon restriction to $\mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(F)$.

On the multiplicity of the eigenvalues of discrete tori

Abstract:It is well known that the standard flat torus $\mathbb{T}^2=\mathbb{R}^2/\Z^2$ has arbitrarily large Laplacian-eigenvalue multiplicities. We prove, however, that $24$ is the optimal upper bound for the multiplicities of the nonzero eigenvalues of a $2$-dimensional discrete torus. For general higher dimension discrete tori, we characterize the eigenvalues with large multiplicities. As consequences, we get uniform boundedness results of the multiplicity for a long range and an optimal global bound for the multiplicity. Our main tool of proof is the theory of vanishing sums of roots of unity.
