Abstract:We derive continued fractions for partition generating functions, utilizing both Euler's techniques and Ramanujan's techniques. Although our results are for integer partitions there is scope to extend this work to vector partitions, including for binary and n-ary partitions.

Abstract:We explore the modularity of the continued fractions $I(\tau), J(\tau), T_1(\tau), T_2(\tau)$ and $U(\tau)=I(\tau)/J(\tau)$ of order $10$, where $I(\tau)$ and $J(\tau)$ are introduced by Rajkhowa and Saikia, which are special cases of certain identities of Ramanujan. In particular, we show that these fractions can be expressed in terms of an $\eta$-quotient $g(\tau)$ that generates the field of all modular functions on the congruence subgroup $\Gamma_0(10)$. Consequently, we prove that modular equations for $g(\tau)$ and $U(\tau)$ exist at any level, and derive these equations of prime levels $p\leq 11$. We also show that the above continued fractions of order $10$ can be explicitly evaluated using a singular value of $g(\tau)$, which, under certain conditions, generates the Hilbert class field of an imaginary class field. We employ the methods of Lee and Park to establish our results.

Abstract:We introduce a $q$-analog of the higher continued fractions introduced by the last three authors in a previous work (together with Gregg Musiker), which are simultaneously a generalization of the $q$-rational numbers of Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko. They are defined as ratios of generating functions for $P$-partitions on certain posets. We give matrix formulas for computing them, which generalize previous results in the $q=1$ case. We also show that certain properties enjoyed by the $q$-rationals are also satisfied by our higher versions.

Abstract:Several continued fraction expansions for $e$ have been produced by an automated conjecture generator (ACG) called \emph{The Ramanujan Machine}. Some of these were already known, some have recently been proved and some remain unproven. While an ACG can produce interesting putative results, it gives very limited insight into their significance. In this paper, we derive an elegant continued fraction expansion, equivalent to a result from the Ramanujan Machine, using the sequence of ratios of factorials to subfactorials or derangement numbers.

Abstract:We formulate a thermodynamical approach to the study of distribution of modular symbols, motivated by the work of Baladi-Vallée. We introduce the modular partitions of continued fractions and observe that the statistics for modular symbols follow from the behavior of modular partitions. We prove the limit Gaussian distribution and residual equidistribution for modular partitions as a vector-valued random variable on the set of rationals whose denominators are up to a fixed positive integer by studying the spectral properties of transfer operator associated to the underlying dynamics. The approach leads to a few applications. We show an average version of conjectures of Mazur-Rubin on statistics for the period integrals of an elliptic newform. We further observe that the equidistribution of mod $p$ values of modular symbols leads to mod $p$ non-vanishing results for special modular $L$-values twisted by a Dirichlet character.

Abstract:This paper gives an exposition of well known results on vector partition functions. The exposition is based on works of M. Brion, A. Szenes and M. Vergne and is geared toward explicit computer realizations. In particular, the paper presents two algorithms for computing the vector partition function with respect to a finite set of vectors $I$ as a quasipolynomial over a finite set of pointed polyhedral cones. We use the developed techniques to relate a result of P. Tumarkin and A. Felikson (and present an independent proof in the particular case of finite-dimensional root systems) to give bounds for the periods of the Kostant partition functions of $E_6$, $E_7$, $E_8$, $F_4$, $G_2$ (the periods are divisors of respectively 6, 12, 60, 12, 6). The first of the described algorithms has been realized and is publicly available under the Library General Public License v3.0 at {<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://vectorpartition.sourceforge.net/" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>}. We include (non-unique) partial fraction decompositions for the generating functions of the Kostant partition function for $A_2$, $A_3$, $A_4$, $B_2$, $B_3$, $C_2$, $C_3$, $G_2$ in the appendix.

Abstract:The partition function $ p_{[1^c\ell^d]}(n)$ can be defined using the generating function, \[\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}p_{[1^c{\ell}^d]}(n)q^n=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\dfrac{1}{(1-q^n)^c(1-q^{\ell n})^d}.\] In \cite{P}, we proved infinite family of congruences for this partition function for $\ell=11$. In this paper, we extend the ideas that we have used in \cite{P} to prove infinite families of congruences for the partition function $p_{[1^c\ell^d]}(n)$ modulo powers of $\ell$ for any integers $c$ and $d$, for primes $5\leq \ell\leq 17$. This generalizes Atkin, Gordon and Hughes' congruences for powers of the partition function. The proofs use an explicit basis for the vector space of modular functions of the congruence subgroup $\Gamma_0(\ell)$. Finally we used these congruences to prove congruences and incongruences of the generalized Frobenius $\ell$-color partitions, $\ell-$regular partitions and $\ell-$core partitions for $\ell=5,7,11,13$ and $17$.

On Convergents of Proper Continued Fractions

Abstract:Proper continued fractions are generalized continued fractions with positive integer numerators $a_i$ and integer denominators with $b_i\geq a_i$. In this paper we study the strength of approximation of irrational numbers to their convergents and classify which pairs of integers $p,q$ yield a convergent $p/q$ to some irrational $x$. Notably, we reduce the problem to finding convergence only of index one and two. We completely classify the possible choices for convergents of odd index and provide a near-complete classification for even index. We furthermore propose a natural two-dimensional generalization of the classical Gauss map as a method for dynamically generating all possible expansions and establish ergodicity of this map.

Continued fractions using a Laguerre digraph interpretation of the Foata--Zeilberger bijection and its variants

Abstract:In the combinatorial theory of continued fractions, the Foata--Zeilberger bijection and its variants have been extensively used to derive various continued fractions enumerating several (sometimes infinitely many) simultaneous statistics on permutations (combinatorial model for factorials) and D-permutations (combinatorial model for Genocchi and median Genocchi numbers). A Laguerre digraph is a digraph in which each vertex has in- and out-degrees $0$ or $1$. In this paper, we interpret the Foata--Zeilberger bijection in terms of Laguerre digraphs, which enables us to count cycles in permutations. Using this interpretation, we obtain Jacobi-type continued fractions for multivariate polynomials enumerating permutations, and also Thron-type and Stieltjes-type continued fractions for multivariate polynomials enumerating D-permutations, in both cases including the counting of cycles. This enables us to prove some conjectured continued fractions due to Sokal and Zeng (2022 Advances in Applied Mathematics) in the case of permutations, and Randrianarivony and Zeng (1996 Electronic Journal of Combinatorics) and Deb and Sokal (2024 Advances in Applied Mathematics) in the case of D-permutations.

Abstract:In number theory, continued fractions are essential tools because they provide distinct representations of real numbers and provide information about their characteristics. Regular continued fractions have been examined in great detail, but less research has been carried out on their semi-regular counterparts, which are produced from the sequences of alternating plus and minus ones. In this study, we investigate the structure and features of semi-regular continuous fractions through the lens of dimension theory. We prove a primary result about the Hausdorff dimension of number sets whose partial quotients increase more quickly than a given pace. Furthermore, we conduct numerical analyses to illustrate the differences between regular and semi-regular continued fractions, shedding light on potential future directions in this field.

Abstract:We study the modularity of the functions of the form $r(\tau)^ar(2\tau)^b$, where $a$ and $b$ are integers with $(a,b)\neq (0,0)$ and $r(\tau)$ is the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction, which may be considered as companions to the Ramanujan's function $k(\tau)=r(\tau)r(2\tau)^2$. In particular, we show that under some condition on $a$ and $b$, there are finitely many such functions generating the field of all modular functions on the congruence subgroup $\Gamma_1(10)$. Furthermore, we establish certain arithmetic properties of the function $l(\tau)=r(2\tau)/r(\tau)^2$, which can be used to evaluate these products. We employ the methods of Lee and Park, and some properties of $\eta$-quotients and generalized $\eta$-quotients to prove our results.

Abstract:A cubic partition is an integer partition wherein the even parts can appear in two colors. In this paper, we introduce the notion of generalized cubic partitions and prove a number of new congruences akin to the classical Ramanujan-type. We emphasize two methods of proofs, one elementary (relying significantly on functional equations) and the other based on modular forms. We close by proving analogous results for generalized overcubic partitions.

Abstract:The famous partition theorem of Euler states that partitions of $n$ into distinct parts are equinumerous with partitions of $n$ into odd parts. Another famous partition theorem due to MacMahon states that the number of partitions of $n$ with all parts repeated at least once equals the number of partitions of $n$ where all parts must be even or congruent to $3 \pmod 6$. These partition theorems were further extended by Glaisher, Andrews, Subbarao, Nyirenda and Mugwangwavari. In this paper, we utilize the Chinese remainder theorem to prove a comprehensive partition theorem that encompasses all existing partition theorems. We also give a natural generalization of Euler's theorem based on a special complete residue system. Furthermore, we establish interesting congruence connections between the partition function $p(n)$ and related partition functions.

Abstract:The cubic partitions of a natural number $n$, introduced by Chan and Kim, have generating function $\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}a(n)q^n= \frac{1}{(q; q)_{\infty}(q^2; q^2)_{\infty}}.$ In this paper, we generalize some results of Chen-Lin, which suggest that $a(n)$ should have analogous properties of the ordinary partition function. Specifically, we show that for every non-negative integer $n$, $a(5^4n+547)\equiv 0\pmod{5^2}, a(7^3n+190)\equiv 0\pmod{7^2}, a(7^3n+288 \equiv 0\pmod{7^2} and a(7^3n+337)\equiv 0\pmod{7^2}.$

A generalization of conjugation of integer partitions

Abstract:We exhibit, for any positive integer parameter $s$, an involution on the set of integer partitions of $n$. These involutions show the joint symmetry of the distributions of the following two statistics. The first counts the number of parts of a partition divisible by $s$, whereas the second counts the number of cells in the Ferrers diagram of a partition whose leg length is zero and whose arm length has remainder $s-1$ when dividing by $s$. In particular, for $s=1$ this involution is just conjugation. Additionally, we provide explicit expressions for the bivariate generating functions. Our primary motivation to construct these involutions is that we know only of two other "natural" bijections on integer partitions of a given size, one of which is the Glaisher-Franklin bijection sending the set of parts divisible by $s$, each divided by $s$, to the set of parts occurring at least $s$ times.

Abstract:In this paper, we use the Lambert series generating function for Euler's totient function to introduce a new identity for the number of $1$'s in the partitions of $n$. A new expansion for Euler's partition function $p(n)$ is derived in this context.
