Abstract:Grain boundary (GB) migration associated with grain growth and recrystallization encounters lattice defects frequently, while the atomistic mechanisms of GB-defect interactions during these dynamic processes remain largely unclear. Here, we systematically investigate the atomistic mechanism of the interactions between migrating Σ11(113) symmetrical tilt GBs and different lattice defects, including full dislocation, stacking fault and nanotwin in Au, via the integrated in situ nanomechanical testing and molecular dynamics simulations. Experimental evidence demonstrated a conservative defect accommodation mechanism of Σ11(113) GB and a coupled GB-twin evolution, where localized atom displacement dominated the GB-defect interactions. Moreover, the shear-coupled GB migration was unperturbed by the interaction, due to the glissile residual disconnections left on the GB. These findings provide a comprehensive experimental understanding on the atomistic mechanism of GB migration under the influence of different lattice defects, which significantly advances the theoretical development of GB-dominated plasticity under more realistic circumstances.
Snaking without subcriticality: grain boundaries as non-topological defects

Abstract:Non-topological defects such as grain boundaries abound in pattern forming systems, arising from local variations of pattern properties such as amplitude, wavelength, orientation, etc. We introduce the idea of treating such non-topological defects as spatially localised structures that are embedded in a background pattern, instead of treating them in an amplitude-phase decomposition. Using the two-dimensional quadratic-cubic Swift--Hohenberg equation as an example we obtain fully nonlinear equilibria that contain grain boundaries which are closed curves containing multiple penta-hepta defects separating regions of hexagons with different orientations. These states arise from local orientation mismatch between two stable hexagon patterns, one of which forms the localised grain and the other its background, and do not require a subcritical bifurcation connecting them. Multiple robust isolas that span a wide range of parameters are obtained even in the absence of a unique Maxwell point, underlining the importance of retaining pinning when analysing patterns with defects, an effect omitted from the amplitude-phase description.

Abstract:Significance The properties of real-world materials are typically determined by small collections of defects within them. One common defect––a dislocation––results from removing half a row of atoms from a crystal, leaving behind the other half that now ends abruptly at a tip in the crystal. The termination point behaves like a point “particle” that carries a topological charge, obeys dynamical laws, and interacts with other such particles to create grain boundaries. We report a method to precisely manipulate dislocations by using specially designed light fields (“topological tweezers”) to massage an experimental model system consisting of microscopic colloids. We use this tool to study their interactions and complex collective dynamics that are not always as reversible as one might think.

Abstract:We present the results of atomistic and ab initio simulation of several different tilt grain boundaries (GB) in silicon. The boundary structures obtained with genetic algorithm turned out to have no coordination defects, i.e. all silicon atoms restored their tetrahedral coordination during the structure optimisation. That concerns previously known symmetric {\Sigma} 5 (130), {\Sigma} 3 (211) and {\Sigma} 29 (520) boundaries as well as previously unknown asymmetric {\Sigma} 9 (-255)/(-211), {\Sigma} 3 (-255)/(211) and {\Sigma} 13 (790)/(3 11 0) structures. We have performed an extensive study of defect segregation on the boundaries, including neutral vacancy and carbon, phosphorus and boron impurities. A clear correlation between the segregation energy of the defect and local geometry of the boundary site where the defect is segregated has been revealed. We suggest a simple purely geometric model for evaluation of approximate segregation energies of the listed defects.

Abstract:We introduce a method to visualize dislocations along grain boundaries at the atomic level. It uses an atomic-level Nye tensor, representing the dislocation density. To calculate the Nye tensor at grain boundaries, we extend the Hartley-Mishin strain gradient calculation to the displacement shift complete lattice. We show that the method is effective in visualizing disconnections and the dislocation content of grain boundary phase junctions in body-centered cubic tungsten, as well as face-centered cubic copper. In addition, we use the method to characterize the morphology of a two-dimensional grain boundary phase nucleus in a symmetric tilt grain boundary in tungsten. This method can be applied to both bulk dislocations and grain boundary disconnections, which makes it ideal for studying the interactions and reactions of bulk dislocations with grain boundaries, and grain boundary disconnections.

Coloring Trivalent Graphs: A Defect TFT Approach

Abstract:We show that the combinatorial matter of graph coloring is, in fact, quantum in the sense of satisfying the sum over all the possible intermediate state properties of a path integral. In our case, the topological field theory (TFT) with defects gives meaning to it. This TFT has the property that when evaluated on a planar trivalent graph, it provides the number of Tait-Coloring of it. Defects can be considered as a generalization of groups. With the Klein-four group as a 1-defect condition, we reinterpret graph coloring as sections of a certain bundle, distinguishing a coloring (global-sections) from a coloring process (local-sections.) These constructions also lead to an interpretation of the word problem, for a finitely presented group, as a cobordism problem and a generalization of (trivial) bundles at the level of higher categories.

Abstract:Grain boundaries, the two-dimensional (2D) defects between differently oriented crystals, control mechanical and transport properties of materials. Our fundamental understanding of grain boundaries is still incomplete even after nearly a century and a half of research since Sorby first imaged grains. Here, we present a systematic study, over 9 orders of magnitude of size scales, in which we analyze 2D defects between two neighboring crystals across five hierarchy levels and investigate their crystallographic, compositional, and electronic features. The levels are (a) the macroscale interface alignment and grain misorientation (held constant here); (b) the systematic mesoscopic change in the inclination of the grain boundary plane for the same orientation difference; (c) the facets, atomic motifs (structural units), and internal nanoscopic defects within the boundary plane; (d) the grain boundary chemistry; and (e) the electronic structure of the atomic motifs. As a model material, we use Fe alloyed with B and C, exploiting the strong interdependence of interface structure and chemistry in this system. This model system is the basis of the 1.9 billion tons of steel produced annually and has an eminent role as a catalyst. Surprisingly, we find that even a change in the inclination of the GB plane with identical misorientation impacts GB composition and atomic arrangement. Thus, it is the smallest structural hierarchical level, the atomic motifs, which control the most important chemical properties of the grain boundaries. This finding not only closes a missing link between the structure and chemical composition of such defects but also enables the targeted design and passivation of the chemical state of grain boundaries to free them from their role as entry gates for corrosion, hydrogen embrittlement, or mechanical failure.

Abstract:For two γ-TiAl grains exhibiting a 180° twin relationship, the junction between a {111}γ1 // {111}γ2 twin plane and a perpendicular {121}γ1 // {121}γ2 interface has been investigated by high-resolution electron microscopy. The {111}-(121} junction exhibits a region of complex contrast due to dislocations at the end of both the {111} and the {121} facets. The {121}γ1 // {121}γ2, twin interface can be produced either by γ → γ shear or as the result of two α → γ transitions and subsequently undergoes a rigid-body shift at the interface in order to relax its structure. Both the structure and the mobility of {121}LI0 interfaces are discussed.

Abstract:Interfacial segregation can stabilize grain structures and even lead to grain boundary complexion transitions. However, understanding of the complexity of such phenomena in polycrystalline materials is limited, as most studies focus on bicrystal geometries. In this work, we investigate interfacial segregation and subsequent complexion transitions in polycrystalline Cu-Zr alloys using hybrid Monte Carlo/molecular dynamics simulations. No significant change in the grain size or structure is observed upon Zr dopant addition to a pure Cu polycrystal at moderate temperature, where grain boundary segregation is the dominant behavior. Segregation within the boundary network is inhomogeneous, with some boundaries having local concentrations that are an order of magnitude larger than the global value and others having almost no segregation, and changes to physical parameters such as boundary free volume and energy are found to correlate with dopant concentration. Further, another alloy sample is investigated at a higher temperature to probe the occurrence of widespread transitions in interfacial structure, where a significant fraction of the originally ordered boundaries transition to amorphous complexions, demonstrating the coexistence of multiple complexion types, each with their own distribution of boundary chemical composition. Overall, this work highlights that interfacial segregation and complexion structure can be diverse in a polycrystalline network. The findings shown here complement existing computational and experimental studies of individual interfaces and help pave the way for unraveling the complexity of interfacial structure in realistic microstructures.

Winding Numbers and Topology of Aperiodic Tilings

Abstract:We show that diffraction features of $1D$ quasicrystals can be retrieved from a single topological quantity, the Čech cohomology group, $\check{H}^{1}\cong\mathbb{Z}^2$, which encodes all relevant combinatorial information of tilings. We present a constructive way to calculate $\check{H}^{1}$ for a large variety of aperiodic tilings. By means of two winding numbers, we compare the diffraction features contained in $\check{H}^{1}$ to the gap labeling theorem, another topological tool used to label spectral gaps in the integrated density of states. In the light of this topological description, we discuss similarities and differences between families of aperiodic tilings, and the resilience of topological features against perturbations.

Abstract:We setup a dislocation dynamics finite element framework by bridging a dislocation dynamics program and an open source finite element program. As part of initial verification, deformation of single crystal micro-pillar having single and double glide activation is demonstrated. A case study of a twin boundary is presented wherein the dislocation pile-up at the grain boundary and formation of a residual dislocation are shown. For studying the dislocation interactions with other grain boundaries, model grain boundaries are considered. We consider three synthetic grain boundaries namely transparent, semi-transparent, and impenetrable. The model’s transparent and semi-transparent grain boundaries contain no dislocations and very low density of dislocations in them, respectively, and thus low number of interactions with other dislocations. More junctions and cross-slip occurrences are recorded near the semi-transparent grain boundary. The most dislocation–dislocation interactions near grain boundaries result into glissile junctions. The current results are compared against literature data and it is observed that other than junction formation, cross-slip is very frequency observed near grain boundaries.
Topological grain boundary segregation transitions

Abstract:Engineering structure of grain boundaries (GBs) by solute segregation is a promising strategy to tailor the properties of polycrystalline materials. Theoretically it has been suggested that solute segregation can trigger phase transitions at GBs offering novel pathways to design interfaces. However, an understanding of their intrinsic atomistic nature is missing. Here, we combine atomic resolution electron microscopy atomistic simulations to discover that iron segregation to GBs in titanium stabilizes icosahedral units (cages) that form robust building blocks of distinct GB phases. Due to their five-fold symmetry, the Fe cages cluster and assemble into hierarchical GB phases characterised by a different number and arrangement of the constituent icosahedral units. Our advanced GB structure prediction algorithms and atomistic simulations validate the stability of these observed phases and the high excess of Fe at the GB that is accommodated by the phase transitions.

Abstract:Twin boundary defects form in virtually all crystalline materials as part of their response to applied deformation or thermal stress. For nearly six decades, graphite has been used as a textbook example of twinning with illustrations showing atomically sharp interfaces between parent and twin. Using state-of-the-art high-resolution annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, we have captured atomic resolution images of graphitic twin boundaries and find that these interfaces are far more complex than previously supposed. Density functional theory calculations confirm that the presence of van der Waals bonding eliminates the requirement for an atomically sharp interface, resulting in long-range bending across multiple unit cells. We show these remarkable structures are common to other van der Waals materials, leading to extraordinary microstructures, Raman-active stacking faults, and sub-surface exfoliation within bulk crystals.

Solute Induced Defect Phase Transformations in Mg Grain Boundaries

Abstract:The study of defect phases is important for designing nanostructured metals and alloys. Grain boundaries (GBs) form one class of defects that directly influence materials properties, such as deformability and strength. At the same time, alloying can introduce GB phase transformations and can therewith alter mechanical performance. In this work, the defect phases of a $\Sigma$7 $(12\bar{3}0)$ [0001] 21.78$^\circ$ symmetric tilt GB in hcp Mg are investigated. Ab-initio simulations as a function of stress and temperature (using quasi-harmonic approximation) are performed, and different types of phase transformations are revealed. To this end, the influence of the chemical degree of freedom on the defect phases is studied for the example of Ga addition, using an efficient screening approach that combines empirical potentials and accurate ab-initio calculations. By exploiting the concept of defect phase diagrams, a phase transformation from the T to the A structural type and as well as a systematic transition of the segregation site preference is revealed. The results qualitatively agree well with experimental observations from scanning transition electron microscopy. The underlying physical mechanisms have an impact on grain-boundary engineering in metallic alloys.

Abstract:We present a method to directly visualise a statistical analysis of skyrmion defect alignment at grain boundaries in the skyrmion host [Formula: see text]OSeO3. Using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, we collected large data sets with several hundreds of frames containing skyrmion lattices with grain boundaries in them. To address the behaviour of strings of dislocations in these grain boundaries, we developed an algorithm to automatically extract and classify strings of dislocations separating the grains. This way we circumvent the problem of having to create configurations with well-defined relative grain orientations by performing a statistical analysis on a dynamically rearranging image sequence. With this statistical method, we are able to experimentally extract the relationship between grain boundary alignment and defect spacing and find an agreement with geometric expectations. The algorithms used can be extended to other types of lattices such as Abrikosov lattices or colloidal systems in optical microscopy.

Abstract:Topological defects can affect the physical properties of graphene in unexpected ways. Harnessing their influence may lead to enhanced control of both material strength and electrical properties. Here we present a new class of topological defects in graphene composed of a rotating sequence of dislocations that close on themselves, forming grain boundary loops that either conserve the number of atoms in the hexagonal lattice or accommodate vacancy/interstitial reconstruction, while leaving no unsatisfied bonds. One grain boundary loop is observed as a "flower" pattern in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) studies of epitaxial graphene grown on SiC(0001). We show that the flower defect has the lowest energy per dislocation core of any known topological defect in graphene, providing a natural explanation for its growth via the coalescence of mobile dislocations.

Abstract:Perfect Imperfections Graphene is composed of six-atom rings, but will include a number of five- and seven-atom rings as defects. Using simulations, Grantab et al. (p. 946 ) show that more defects do not necessarily lead to greater deterioration of mechanical properties. Mismatches caused by differences in the orientation of neighboring crystals are divided into low- and high-angle grain boundaries, and typically it is the lower-angle boundaries that are stronger. In graphene, by contrast, the larger-angle boundaries, which consist of higher-defect densities, are better able to accommodate the strain and prevent failure that originates in the breakup of the seven-member graphene rings. This suggests ways for synthesizing imperfect graphene sheets that will have mechanical properties that are close to those of perfect graphene.

Abstract:Grain boundaries in extremely confined colloidal smectics possess a topological fine structure with coexisting nematic and tetratic symmetry of the director field. An alternative way to approach the problem of smectic topology is via the layer structure, which is typically more accessible in experiments on molecular liquid crystals. Here, we consider exemplary density functional theory results for two-dimensional hard rods to illustrate how the concept of endpoint defects, which appear as tetratic disclinations of quarter charge in director topology, translates to smectic layer topology built around the networks formed by density maxima and minima. By doing so, we elaborate on further advantages of a topological concept evolving around the layer structure rather than the director field, such as providing insight in the structure of edge dislocations or virtual defects at the confining walls.
