Abstract:In this letter, we give a characterization for a generic construction of bent functions. This characterization enables us to obtain another efficient construction of bent functions and to give a positive answer on a problem of bent functions.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate properties of generalized bent Boolean functions and 2k-bent (i.e., negabent, octabent, hexadecabent, et al.) Boolean functions in a uniform framework. From the Hadamard matrices, Hodzic and Pasalic presented sufficient conditions for generalized bent functions. Using cyclotomic fields and the decomposition of generalized bent functions, we generalize their results, prove that Hodzic and Pasalic's conditions of generalized bent functions are not only sufficient but also necessary, and completely characterize generalized bent functions in terms of their component functions. Furthermore, we present a secondary construction of bent functions or semibent functions from generalized bent functions. Finally, we give the relations of generalized bent functions and 2 k -bent functions, demonstrate that 2 k -bent functions are actually a special class of generalized bent functions, and completely characterize 2 k -bent functions.

Abstract:We study a new method of constructing Boolean bent functions from cyclotomic mappings. Three generic constructions are obtained by considering different branch functions such as Dillon functions, Niho functions and Kasami functions over multiplicative cosets and additive cosets respectively. As a result, several new explicit infinite families of bent functions and their duals are derived. We demonstrate that some previous constructions are special cases of our simple constructions. In addition, by studying their polynomial forms, we observe that the last construction provides some examples which are EA-inequivalent to five classes of monomials, Dillon type and Niho type polynomials.

Abstract:In 2012, Carlet et al. developed two secondary constructions of bent functions (Advances in Mathematics of Communications, 6: 305-314) and proposed some applications for their constructions. However, the duals of bent functions in their constructions were not presented. In order to find more general applications to these constructions and obtain new classes of bent functions, an open problem was proposed by Carlet in 2014. Hence, in this study, a class of PS vectorial bent functions for answering that open problem, which also addresses another open problem on vectorial bent functions proposed by Mesnager in 2014, is constructed. In addition, a new secondary construction of bent functions that generalises one of Carlet et al.'s constructions in 2012 is presented. Based on that, two new classes of bent functions were obtained and their duals were presented explicitly. In particular, some self-dual bent functions are constructed. Moreover, it can be proved that our bent functions can be EA-inequivalent to those constructed by Carlet et al. in 2012.

Abstract:We prove a new characterization of weakly regular ternary bent functions via partial difference sets. Partial difference sets are combinatorial objects corresponding to strongly regular graphs. Using known families of bent functions, we obtain in this way new families of strongly regular graphs, some of which were previously unknown. One of the families includes an example in [N. Hamada, T. Helleseth, A characterization of some {3v2+v3,3v1+v2,3,3}-minihypers and some [15,4,9;3]-codes with B2=0, J. Statist. Plann. Inference 56 (1996) 129–146], which was considered to be sporadic; using our results, this strongly regular graph is now a member of an infinite family. Moreover, this paper contains a new proof that the Coulter–Matthews and ternary quadratic bent functions are weakly regular.

Abstract:In this letter, we present a construction of bent functions which generalizes a work of Zhang et al. in 2016. Based on that, we obtain a cubic bent function in 10 variables and prove that, it has no a ffine derivative and does not belong to the completed Maiorana-McFarland class, which is opposite to all 6 /8-variable cubic bent functions as they are inside the completed Maiorana-McFarland class. This is the first time a theoretical proof is given to show that the cubic bent functions in 10 variables can be outside the completed Maiorana-McFarland class. Before that, only a sporadic example with such properties was known by computer search. We also show that our function is EA-inequivalent to that sporadic one.

Abstract:Inspired by a recent work of Tang et al. on constructing bent functions [14, IEEE TIT, 63(1): 6149-6157, 2017], we introduce a property (Pτ) of any Boolean function that its second order derivatives vanish at any direction (ui,uj) for some τ-subset {u1,…,uτ} of $\mathbb {F}_{2^{n}}$, and then establish a link between this property and the construction of Tang et al. (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 63(10), 6149–6157 2017). It enables us to find more bent functions efficiently. We construct (at least) five new infinite families of bent functions from some known functions: the Gold’s bent functions and some quadratic non-monomial bent functions, Leander’s monomial bent functions, Canteaut-Charpin-Kyureghyan’s monomial bent functions, and the Maiorana-McFarland class of bent functions, respectively. Our result generalizes some recent works on bent functions. We also provide the corresponding dual functions in all our constructions except the quadratic non-monomial one. It also turns out that we can get new bent functions outside the Maiorana-McFarland completed class.

Abstract:Based on the definition of generalized partially bent functions, using the theory of linear transformation, the relationship among generalized partially bent functions over ring Z N, generalized bent functions over ring Z N and affine functions is discussed. When N is a prime number, it is proved that a generalized partially bent function can be decomposed as the addition of a generalized bent function and an affine function. The result obtained here generalizes the main works concerning partially bent functions by Claud Carlet in [1].

Abstract:The concatenation of four Boolean bent functions is bent if and only if the dual bent condition is satisfied. However, to specify four bent functions satisfying this duality condition is in general quite a difficult task. Commonly, to simplify this problem, certain relations between are assumed, as well as functions of a special shape are considered, e.g., are Maiorana-McFarland bent functions. In the case when permutations of have the property and Maiorana-McFarland bent functions satisfy the additional condition , the dual bent condition is known to have a relatively simple shape allowing to specify the functions explicitly. In this paper, we generalize this result for the case when Maiorana-McFarland bent functions satisfy the condition and provide a construction of new permutations with the property from the old ones. Combining these two results, we obtain a recursive construction method of bent functions satisfying the dual bent condition. Moreover, we provide a generic condition on the Maiorana-McFarland bent functions stemming from the permutations of with the property, such that the concatenation does not belong, up to equivalence, to the Maiorana-McFarland class. Using monomial permutations of with the property and monomial functions on , we provide explicit constructions of such bent functions; a particular case of our result shows how one can construct bent functions from APN permutations, when m is odd. Finally, with our construction method, we explain how one can construct homogeneous cubic bent functions, noticing that only very few design methods of these objects are known.

Abstract:The problem of designing explicit bent and plateaued functions has been researched for several decades. However, finding new bent functions outside the well-known completed Maiorana-McFarland class M # is still a challenge. Plateaued functions have been characterized in many different ways, but there is no general and rigorous mathematical method to generate them directly, except for the ones in the spirit of the well-known Maiorana-McFarland constructions or those obtained through adaptations of the secondary constructions of bent functions. Jeong and Lee recently made significant advances regarding algorithms for constructing balanced plateaued functions with maximal algebraic degrees in [IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, 70(2), 1408-1421, 2024]. Due to the gap between our significant interest in the notion of plateaued functions and the knowledge we have on it, our motivation is to bring further results on the constructions of plateaued functions that allow us to understand their structure better. This article creates a framework of new generic constructions of bent and plateaued functions by studying Boolean functions of the form h ( x ) = f ( x )+ F ( f 1 ( x ),… fr ( x )), where fi ( x ) = f ( x )+ f ( x +μ i ) for each 1 ≤ i ≤ r . We firstly prove that h and f have the same extended Walsh-Hadamard spectrum if D μi D μj f = 0 for any 1 ≤ i < j ≤ r . This result extends a previous construction of bent functions to any Boolean functions. The strength of such a result is that it allows us to obtain several plateaued functions of high algebraic degrees from known ones with low algebraic degrees, which was a significant and challenging problem raised in the literature. Such a result is a real challenge and breaks a deadlock since no mathematical method allows the general constructions of plateaued functions. We next give an extended affine equivalent form of the function h , which provides us with another compelling perspective to design new bent functions (including those which are outside M # from certain known ones inside M # ) and plateaued functions. Finally, we present four generic constructions of bent functions outside M # from generalized Maiorana-McFarland functions.

Abstract:In this article, we identify certain instances of bent functions, constructed using the so-called property, that are provably outside the completed Maiorana–McFarland ( ) class. This also partially answers an open problem in posed by Kan et al. (IEEE Trans Inf Theory, https://doi.org/10.1109/TIT.2022.3140180, 2022). We show that this design framework (using the property), can provide instances of bent functions that are outside the known classes of bent functions, including the classes , and , where the latter three were introduced by Carlet in the early nineties. We provide two generic methods for identifying such instances, where most notably one of these methods uses permutations that may admit linear structures. For the first time, a set of sufficient conditions for the functions of the form to be bent and outside is specified without a strong assumption that the components of the permutation do not admit linear structures.

Abstract:Bent functions are maximally nonlinear Boolean functions with an even number of variables, which include a subclass of functions, the so-called hyper-bent functions whose properties are stronger than bent functions and a complete classification of hyper-bent functions is elusive and inavailable.~In this paper,~we solve an open problem of Mesnager that describes hyper-bentness of hyper-bent functions with multiple trace terms via Dillon-like exponents with coefficients in the extension field~$\mathbb{F}_{2^{2m}}$~of this field~$\mathbb{F}_{2^{m}}$. By applying Möbius transformation and the theorems of hyperelliptic curves, hyper-bentness of these functions are successfully characterized in this field~$\mathbb{F}_{2^{2m}}$ with~$m$~odd integer.

Abstract:We generalize the construction of affine polar graphs in two different ways to obtain partial difference sets and amorphic association schemes. In the first generalization we replace the quadratic form in the affine polar graph construction by higher degree homogeneous functions that are p-ary weakly regular bent. The second generalization uses a combination of quadratic forms and uniform cyclotomy. The negative Latin square type partial difference sets arising from the second generalization seem to be new.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the dual of generalized bent functions $f: V_{n}\rightarrow \mathbb{Z}_{p^k}$ where $V_{n}$ is an $n$-dimensional vector space over $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ and $p$ is an odd prime, $k$ is a positive integer. It is known that weakly regular generalized bent functions always appear in pairs since the dual of a weakly regular generalized bent function is also a weakly regular generalized bent function. The dual of non-weakly regular generalized bent functions can be generalized bent or not generalized bent. By generalizing the construction of \cite{Cesmelioglu5}, we obtain an explicit construction of generalized bent functions for which the dual can be generalized bent or not generalized bent. We show that the generalized indirect sum construction method given in \cite{Wang} can provide a secondary construction of generalized bent functions for which the dual can be generalized bent or not generalized bent. By using the knowledge on ideal decomposition in cyclotomic field, we prove that $f^{**}(x)=f(-x)$ if $f$ is a generalized bent function and its dual $f^{*}$ is also a generalized bent function. For any non-weakly regular generalized bent function $f$ which satisfies that $f(x)=f(-x)$ and its dual $f^{*}$ is generalized bent, we give a property and as a consequence, we prove that there is no self-dual generalized bent function $f: V_{n}\rightarrow \mathbb{Z}_{p^k}$ if $p\equiv 3 \ (mod \ 4)$ and $n$ is odd. For $p \equiv 1 \ (mod \ 4)$ or $p\equiv 3 \ (mod \ 4)$ and $n$ is even, we give a secondary construction of self-dual generalized bent functions. In the end, we characterize the relations between the generalized bentness of the dual of generalized bent functions and the bentness of the dual of bent functions, as well as the self-duality relations between generalized bent functions and bent functions by the decomposition of generalized bent functions.

Abstract:We use the extended Maiorana-McFarland's class to obtain bent functions. Additionally, we obtain balanced functions when we restrict its domain to vectors with even Hamming weight, i.e., an equal number of pre-images for 0 and 1. We have defined a bent function on an affine space to achieve this. Additionally, we demonstrate that the bent functions, in general, are balanced by restricting them to vectors of even Hamming or odd Hamming weight. Since that we have all the necessary tools, we present an algorithm for generating new bent functions of any dimension using the Maiorana-McFarland approach multiple times.

We observe that most of studies on a weakly regular p -ary bent function f with of -form always assume the gcd-condition : . We first show that whenever considering weakly regular p -ary bent functions f with of -form, we can drop the gcd-condition; using the gcd-condition, we also obtain a characterization of a weakly regular bent function of -form. Furthermore, we find an additional characterization for weakly regular bent functions of -form; we consider two cases m being even or odd. Let f be a weakly regular bent function of -form preserving the zero element; then in the case that m is odd, we show that f satisfies . On the other hand, when m is even and f is also non-regular, we show that f satisfies as well. In addition, we present two explicit families of regular bent functions of -form in terms of the gcd-condition.

Constructing vectorial bent functions via second-order derivatives

Abstract:Let n be an even positive integer, and m < n be one of its positive divisors. In this paper, inspired by the work of Tang et al. (2017) [23] on constructing large classes of bent functions from known ones, we consider the construction of vectorial bent and vectorial plateaued (n, m)-functions of the form H(x) = G(x) + g(x), where G is a vectorial bent (n, m)-function, and g is a Boolean function. We find an efficient generic method to construct such kind of vectorial bent (plateaued) functions by establishing a link between the bentness (plateaudness) of Hand the second-order derivatives of g. This allows us to provide (at least) three new infinite families of vectorial bent functions with high algebraic degrees. New vectorial plateaued (n, m + t)-functions are also obtained (t >= 0 depending on n can be large numbers), two classes of which have the maximal number of bent components. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. On Constructions and Enumeration of Vectorial Hyper-bent Functions in the $\cP\cS_{ap}^{\#}$ Class

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to give explicit constructions of vectorial hyper-bent functions in the $\cP\cS_{ap}^{\#}$ class. It seems that the explicit constructions were so far known only for very special cases. To this end, we present a sufficient and necessary condition of this family of vectorial functions to be hyper-bent. The conditions are expressed in terms of group ring. Using this characterization, explicit constructions of vectorial hyper-bent functions of the $\cP\cS_{ap}^{\#}$ class via balanced functions are proposed. Furthermore, exact number of vectorial hyper-bent functions in the $\cP\cS_{ap}^{\#}$ class is found. The results improve some previous work. Moreover, we solve a problem of counting vectorial hyper-bent functions left by Muratović-Ribić, Pasalic and Ribić in [{\em IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory}, 60 (2014), pp. 4408-4413].
