Abstract:Given a span of $\infty$-categories one of whose legs is a right fibration and the other a cofibration, we construct an $\infty$-category, the exit path $\infty$-category of the span. This gives access to stratified geometry by means only of unstratified objects.

Abstract:In this paper, we study compactness and finiteness of an $\infty$-category $\mathcal{C}$ equipped with a conservative functor to a finite poset $P$. We provide sufficient conditions for $\mathcal{C}$ to be compact in terms of strata and homotopy links of $\mathcal{C}\rightarrow P$. Analogous conditions for $\mathcal{C}$ to be finite are also given. From these, we deduce that, if $X\rightarrow P$ is a conically stratified space with the property that the weak homotopy type of its strata, and of strata of its local links, are compact (respectively finite) $\infty$-groupoids, then $\text{Exit}_P(X)$ is compact (respectively finite). This gives a positive answer to a question of Porta and Teyssier. If $X\rightarrow P$ is equipped with a conically smooth structure (e.g. a Whitney stratification), we show that $\text{Exit}_P(X)$ is finite if and only the weak homotopy types of the strata of $X\rightarrow P$ are finite. The aforementioned characterization relies on the finiteness of $\text{Exit}_P(X)$, when $X\rightarrow P$ is compact and conically smooth. We conclude our paper by showing that the analogous statement does not hold in the topological category. More explicitly, we provide an example of a compact $C^0$-stratified space whose exit paths $\infty$-category is compact, but not finite. This stratified space was constructed by Quinn. We also observe that this provides a non-trivial example of a $C^0$-stratified space which does not admit any conically smooth structure.

Exodromy beyond conicality

Abstract:We show that compact subanalytic stratified spaces and algebraic stratifications of real varieties have finite exit-path $\infty$-categories, refining classical theorems of Lefschetz-Whitehead, Lojasiewicz, and Hironaka on the finiteness of the underlying homotopy types of these spaces. These stratifications are typically not conical; hence we cannot rely on the currently available exodromy equivalence between constructible sheaves on a stratified space, which requires conicality as a fundamental hypothesis. Building on ideas of Clausen and Orsnes Jansen, we study the class of exodromic stratified spaces, for which the conclusion of the exodromy theorem holds. We prove two new fundamental properties of this class of stratified spaces: coarsenings of exodromic stratifications are exodromic, and every morphism between exodromic stratified spaces induces a functor between the associated exit path $\infty$-categories. As a consequence, we produce many new examples of exodromic stratified spaces, including: coarsenings of conical stratifications, locally finite subanalytic stratifications of real analytic spaces, and algebraic stratifications of real varieties. Our proofs are at the generality of stratified $\infty$-topoi, hence apply to even more general situations such as stratified topological stacks. Finally, we use the previously mentioned finiteness results to construct derived moduli stacks of constructible and perverse sheaves.

An $\infty$-Category of 2-Segal Spaces

Abstract:Algebra objects in $\infty$-categories of spans admit a description in terms of $2$-Segal objects. We introduce a notion of span between $2$-Segal objects and extend this correspondence to an equivalence of $\infty$-categories. Additionally, for every $\infty$-category with finite limits $\mathcal{C}$, we introduce a notion of a birelative $2$-Segal object in $\mathcal{C}$ and establish a similar equivalence with the $\infty$-category of bimodule objects in spans. Examples of these concepts arise from algebraic and hermitian K-theory through the corresponding Waldhausen $S_{\bullet}$-construction. Apart from their categorical relevance, these concepts can be used to construct homotopy coherent representations of Hall algebras.

Abstract:As an explicit example of an $A_\infty$-structure associated to geometry, we construct an $A_\infty$-structure for a Fukaya category of finitely many lines (Lagrangians) in $\R^2$, ie., we define also {\em non-transversal} $A_\infty$-products. This construction is motivated by homological mirror symmetry of (two-)tori, where $\R^2$ is the covering space of a two-torus. The strategy is based on an algebraic reformulation of Morse homotopy theory through homological perturbation theory (HPT) as discussed by Kontsevich and Soibelman in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.SG/0011041" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.SG/0011041">math.SG/0011041</a>, where we introduce a special DG category which is a key idea of our construction.

Framed Combinatorial Topology with Labels in $\infty$-Categories

Abstract:Framed combinatorial topology is a recent approach to tame geometry which expresses higher-dimensional stratified spaces via tractable combinatorial data. The resulting theory of spaces is well-behaved and computable. In this paper we extend FCT by allowing labelling systems of meshes and trusses in $\infty$-categories, and build an alternative model of FCT by constructing $\infty$-categories that classify meshes and trusses. This will serve as the foundation for future work on models of higher categories based on generalised string diagrams and the study of generalised tangles.

Spanning subspace configurations

Abstract:{\em spanning configuration} in the complex vector space $\mathbb{C}^k$ is a sequence $(W_1, \dots, W_r)$ of linear subspaces of $\mathbb{C}^k$ such that $W_1 + \cdots + W_r = \mathbb{C}^k$. We present the integral cohomology of the moduli space of spanning configurations in $\mathbb{C}^k$ corresponding to a given sequence of subspace dimensions. This simultaneously generalizes the classical presentation of the cohomology of partial flag varieties and the more recent presentation of a variety of spanning line configurations defined by the author and Pawlowski. This latter variety of spanning line configurations plays the role of the flag variety for the Haglund-Remmel-Wilson Delta Conjecture of symmetric function theory.

Abstract:I show that any locally Cartesian left localisation of a presentable infinity-category admits a right proper model structure in which all morphisms are cofibrations, and obtain a Koszul duality classification of its fibrations. By a simple criterion in terms of generators for a localisation to be locally Cartesian, this applies to any nullification functor. In particular, it includes examples with non-trivial "homotopical content." I further describe, and provide examples from, the set of fibrations in three contexts: the higher categorical Thomason model structure of Mazel-Gee, where fibrations are local systems; Morel-Voevodsky A1-localisation, where they are a higher analogue of A1-covering spaces; and the Quillen plus construction, where they are related to loop space modules trivialised over the universal acyclic extension.

The Tangle Hypothesis: Dimension 1

Abstract:We introduce an $(\infty,1)$-category ${\sf Bord}_1^{\sf fr}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, the morphisms in which are framed tangles in $\mathbb{R}^n\times \mathbb{D}^1$. We prove that ${\sf Bord}_1^{\sf fr}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ has the universal mapping out property of the 1-dimensional Tangle Hypothesis of Baez--Dolan and Hopkins--Lurie: it is the rigid $\mathcal{E}_n$-monoidal $(\infty,1)$-category freely generated by a single object. Applying this theorem to a dualizable object of a braided monoidal $(\infty,1)$-category gives link invariants, generalizing the Reshetikhin--Turaev invariants.

On local fibrations of $(\infty,2)$-categories

Abstract:In this work we provide a model-independent notion of local fibrations of $(\infty,2)$-categories which generalises the well-known theory of locally coCartesian fibrations of $(\infty,1)$-categories. Based on previous work, we construct a model category which serves as a specific combinatorial model for this type of fibrations. Our main result is a generalisation of the locally coCartesian straightening and unstraightening construction of Lurie, which yields for any scaled simplicial set $S$ an equivalence of $(\infty,2)$-categories between the $(\infty,2)$-category of $(0,1)$-fibrations over $S$ (also known as inner coCartesian fibrations) and the $(\infty,2)$-category of functors $S \to \mathbb{C}\!\operatorname{at}_{(\infty,2)}$ with values in $(\infty,2)$-categories. Given an $(\infty,2)$-category $\mathbb{B}$, our Grothendieck construction can be specialised to produce an equivalence between the $(\infty,2)$-category of local fibrations over $\mathbb{B}$ and the $(\infty,2)$-category of oplax unital functors with values in $\mathbb{C}\!\operatorname{at}_{(\infty,2)}$. Finally, as an application of our results we provide a version of the Yoneda lemma for $(\infty,2)$-categories.

Abstract:Let $\mathscr{C}$ be an extriangulated category with a proper class $\xi$ of $\mathbb{E}$-triangles. We introduce the notions of left Frobenius pairs, left ($n$-)cotorsion pairs and left (weak) Auslander-Buchweitz contexts with respect to $\xi$ in $\mathscr{C}$. We show how to construct left cotorsion pais from left $n$-cotorsion pairs, and establish a one-to-one correspondence between left Frobenius pairs and left (weak) Auslander-Buchweitz contexts. We also study the relation between a certain class of cotorsion pairs and that of $n$-cotorsion pairs. These work generalize Ma-Zhao-Huang's results in triangulated categories and partially generalize Becerril-Mendoza-Pérez-Santiago's results in abelian categories.

$\infty$-operadic foundations for embedding calculus

Abstract:Motivated by applications to spaces of embeddings and automorphisms of manifolds, we consider a tower of $\infty$-categories of truncated right-modules over a unital $\infty$-operad $\mathcal{O}$. We study monoidality and naturality properties of this tower, identify its layers, describe the difference between the towers as $\mathcal{O}$ varies, and generalise these results to the level of Morita $(\infty,2)$-categories. Applied to the ${\rm BO}(d)$-framed $E_d$-operad, this extends Goodwillie-Weiss' embedding calculus and its layer identification to the level of bordism categories. Applied to other variants of the $E_d$-operad, it yields new versions of embedding calculus, such as one for topological embeddings, based on ${\rm BTop}(d)$, or one similar to Boavida de Brito-Weiss' configuration categories, based on ${\rm BAut}(E_d)$. In addition, we prove a delooping result in the context of embedding calculus, establish a convergence result for topological embedding calculus, improve upon the smooth convergence result of Goodwillie, Klein, and Weiss, and deduce an Alexander trick for homology 4-spheres.

Abstract:If $\mathbf{C}$ is a category with pullbacks then there is a bicategory with the same objects as $\mathbf{C}$, spans as morphisms, and maps of spans as 2-morphisms, as shown by Benabou. Fong has developed a theory of "decorated" cospans, which are cospans in $\mathbf{C}$ equipped with extra structure. This extra structure arises from a lax symmetric monoidal functor $F \colon \mathbf{C} \to \mathbf{D}$; we use this functor to "decorate" each cospan with apex $N \in \mathbf{C}$ with an element of $F(N)$. Using a result of Shulman, we show that when $\mathbf{C}$ has finite colimits, decorated cospans are morphisms in a symmetric monoidal bicategory. We illustrate our construction with examples from electrical engineering and the theory of chemical reaction networks.

Abstract:We consider the ordinary category Span(C) of (isomorphism classes of) spans of morphisms in a category C with finite limits as needed, composed horizontally via pullback, and give a general criterion for a quotient of Span(C) to be an allegory. In particular, when C carries a pullback-stable, but not necessarily proper, (E, M)-factorization system, we establish a quotient category Span_E(C) that is isomorphic to the category Rel_M(C) of M-relations in C, and show that it is a (unitary and tabular) allegory precisely when M is a class of monomorphisms in C. Without this restriction, one can still find a least pullback-stable and composition-closed class E. containing E such that Span_E.(C) is a unitary and tabular allegory. In this way one obtains a left adjoint to the 2-functor that assigns to every unitary and tabular allegory the regular category of its Lawverian maps. With the Freyd-Scedrov Representation Theorem for regular categories, we conclude that every finitely complete category with a stable factorization system has a reflection into the huge 2-category of all regular categories.

Enhanced 2-categorical structures, two-dimensional limit sketches and the symmetry of internalisation

Abstract:Many structures of interest in two-dimensional category theory have aspects that are inherently strict. This strictness is not a limitation, but rather plays a fundamental role in the theory of such structures. For instance, a monoidal fibration is - crucially - a strict monoidal functor, rather than a pseudo or lax monoidal functor. Other examples include monoidal double categories, double fibrations, and intercategories. We provide an explanation for this phenomenon from the perspective of enhanced 2-categories, which are 2-categories having a distinguished subclass of 1-cells representing the strict morphisms. As part of our development, we introduce enhanced 2-categorical limit sketches and explain how this setting addresses shortcomings in the theory of 2-categorical limit sketches. In particular, we establish the symmetry of internalisation for such structures, entailing, for instance, that a monoidal double category is equivalently a pseudomonoid in an enhanced 2-category of double categories, or a pseudocategory in an enhanced 2-category of monoidal categories.

Generic Compacta from Relations between Finite Graphs: Theory Building and Examples

Abstract:In recent work, the authors developed a simple method of constructing topological spaces from certain well-behaved partially ordered sets -- those coming from sequences of relations between finite sets. This method associates a given poset with its spectrum, which is a compact T_1 topological space. In this paper, we focus on the case where such finite sets have a graph structure and the relations belong to a given graph category. We relate topological properties of the spectrum to combinatorial properties of the graph categories involved. We then utilise this to exhibit elementary combinatorial constructions of well-known continua as Fraïssé limits of finite graphs in categories with relational morphisms.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of free decomposition spaces: they are simplicial spaces freely generated by inert maps. We show that left Kan extension along the inclusion takes general objects to Möbius decomposition spaces and general maps to CULF maps. We establish an equivalence of -categories . Although free decomposition spaces are rather simple objects, they abound in combinatorics: it seems that all comultiplications of deconcatenation type arise from free decomposition spaces. We give an extensive list of examples, including quasi-symmetric functions.

Abstract:We prove an ambidexterity result for $\infty$-categories of $\infty$-categories admitting a collection of colimits. This unifies and extends two known phenomena: the identification of limits and colimits of presentable $\infty$-categories indexed by a space, and the $\infty$-semiadditivity of the $\infty$-category of $\infty$-categories with $\pi$-finite colimits proven by Harpaz. Our proof employs Stefanich's universal property for the higher category of iterated spans, which encodes ambidexterity phenomena in a coherent fashion.

Etale spaces of residuated lattices

Abstract:This paper explores the concept of étalé spaces associated with residuated lattices. Notions of bundles and étalés of residuated lattices over a given topological space are introduced and investigated. For a topological space $\mathscr{B}$, we establish that the category of étalés of residuated lattices over $\mathscr{B}$ with morphisms of étalés of residuated lattices is coreflective in the category of bundles of residuated lattices over $\mathscr{B}$ along with morphisms of bundles of residuated lattices. We provide a method for transferring an étalé of residuated lattices over a topological space to another, utilizing a continuous map. Finally, we define a contravariant functor, called the section functor, from the category of étalés of residuated lattices with inverse morphisms to the category of residuated lattices.
