Abstract:The extensive catalog of waveforms, with details of binary black hole inspiral and merger, offer an opportunity to understand black hole interactions beyond the large separation regime. We envision a research program that focuses on the transfer of angular momentum from spin of the individual holes to the orbital angular momentum and the role of tidal coupling in the process. That analysis will require the formulation of an expression for the orbital angular momentum of a binary, an expression that is useful at small separations, since that regime is well out of the range of Newtonian approximations and is where tidal coupling should be most interesting. We report here such an expression, a binary orbital angular momentum based on numerical relativity results for quasi-circular orbits, that agrees remarkably well with a similar quantity constructed with particle-perturbation techniques for the Kerr geometry.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to understand the interaction between spin and orbital angular momentum and its conversion mechanism in the binary black - hole system during the approaching merger phase. Specifically, the research focuses on: 1. **Spin - orbital angular momentum transfer**: The paper explores how the spin of an individual black hole in a binary black - hole system is transferred to the orbital angular momentum, especially in the late stage before approaching the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO). This transfer is achieved through tidal coupling, that is, the angular momentum is transferred from spin to orbital motion due to the action of tidal forces. 2. **Expression of orbital angular momentum**: In order to study the above problems, the paper proposes an expression of the binary black - hole orbital angular momentum based on the results of numerical relativity (NR). This expression is applicable to cases of small separation distances, and these cases are beyond the effective range of the Newtonian approximation. 3. **Comparison with the particle - perturbation method**: The paper also compares the results of numerical relativity with the orbital angular momentum obtained by the particle - perturbation method (PP) based on Kerr geometry, and finds that the two are in good agreement at small separation distances. 4. **Effect of tidal coupling**: By analyzing the waveform data under different initial spin conditions, the paper reveals the influence of spin on the evolution speed of the binary black - hole system. For example, a system with the initial spin in the same direction as the orbital angular momentum evolves more slowly, while a system with the opposite direction evolves more faster. This further supports the hypothesis of spin - orbital angular momentum transfer. In summary, this paper aims to deeply understand the complex interaction between spin and orbital angular momentum in the binary black - hole system through the numerical relativity method and provide a theoretical basis for subsequent research.
