Abstract:This note initiates an investigation of packing links into a region of Euclidean space to achieve a maximal density subject to geometric constraints. The upper bounds obtained apply only to the class of homotopically essential links and even there seem extravagantly large, leaving much working room for the interested reader.

Abstract:Recently, Freedman [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2301.00295" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2301.00295">arXiv:2301.00295</a>] introduced the idea of packing a maximal number of links into a bounded region subject to geometric constraints, and produced upper bounds on the packing number in some cases, while commenting that these bounds seemed far too large. We show that the smallest of these "extravagantly large" bounds is in fact sharp by constructing, for any link, a packing of exponentially many copies as a function of the available volume. We also produce improved and generalized upper bounds.

Abstract:For , a compact sphere packing of Euclidean space is a set of spheres in with disjoint interiors so that the contact hypergraph of the packing is the vertex scheme of a homogeneous simplicial d -complex that covers all of . We are motivated by the question: For with , how many configurations of numbers $0<r_{0}<r_{1}<\cdots <r_{n-1}="1$ can occur as the radii of spheres in a compact sphere packing of wherein there occur exactly n sizes of sphere? We introduce what we call 'heteroperturbative sets' of labeled triangulations of unit spheres and we discuss the existence of non-trivial examples of heteroperturbative sets. For a fixed heteroperturbative set, we discuss how a compact sphere packing may be associated to the heteroperturbative set or not. We proceed to show, for with and for a fixed heteroperturbative set, that the collection of all configurations of n distinct positive numbers that can occur as the radii of spheres in a compact packing is finite, when taken over all compact sphere packings of which have exactly n sizes of sphere and which are associated to the fixed heteroperturbative set.</r_{0}<r_{1}

Abstract:Abstract We propose a new approach to the value distribution theory of entire holomorphic curves. We define packing density of Brody curves, and show that it has various non-trivial properties. The packing density of Brody curves can be considered as an infinite dimensional version of characteristic number, and it has an application to Gromov’s mean dimension theory.

Abstract:Parastichies are spiral patterns observed in plants and numerical patterns generated using golden angle method. We generalize this method using Markoff theory and the theory of product of linear forms, to obtain a packing theory on Riemannian manifolds of general dimensions n with a locally diagonalizable metric, including the Euclidean spaces. From the theory, point packings on a plane with logarithmic spirals and on a 3D ball (3D analogue of the Vogel spiral) are newly obtained. We prove that the method is applicable to generate almost uniformly distributed point sets on any smooth Riemannian surfaces in a local sense. We also discuss how to extend it to a global packing in some special cases including the case of packing on a disc such as the Vogel spiral. The packing density is bounded below by approximately 0.7 for surfaces and 0.38 for 3-manifolds under the most general assumption.

A Computer Approach to Determine the Densest Translative Tetrahedron Packings

Abstract:In 1900, as a part of his 18th problem, Hilbert proposed the question to determine the densest congruent (or translative) packings of a given solid, such as the unit ball or the regular tetrahedron of unit edges. Up to now, our knowledge about this problem is still very limited, excepting the ball case. It is conjectured that, for some particular solids such as tetrahedra, cuboctahedra, and octahedra, their maximal translative packing densities and their maximal lattice packing densities are identical. To attack this conjecture, this article suggests a computer approach to determine the maximal local translative packing density of a given polytope, by studying associated color graphs and applying optimization. In particular, all the tetrahedral case, the cuboctahedral case and the octahedral case of the conjecture have been reduced into finite numbers of manageable optimization problems.

Abstract:Abstract Packing topological entropy is a dynamical analogy of the packing dimension, which can be viewed as a counterpart of Bowen topological entropy. In the present paper we give a systematic study of the packing topological entropy for a continuous G -action dynamical system $(X,G)$ , where X is a compact metric space and G is a countable infinite discrete amenable group. We first prove a variational principle for amenable packing topological entropy: for any Borel subset Z of X , the packing topological entropy of Z equals the supremum of upper local entropy over all Borel probability measures for which the subset Z has full measure. Then we obtain an entropy inequality concerning amenable packing entropy. Finally, we show that the packing topological entropy of the set of generic points for any invariant Borel probability measure $\mu $ coincides with the metric entropy if either $\mu $ is ergodic or the system satisfies a kind of specification property.

Abstract:We describe some problems, observations, and conjectures concerning thickness and packing density of knots and links in $\sp^3$ and $\R^3$. We prove the thickness of a nontrivial knot or link in $\sp^3$ is no more than $\frac{\pi}{4}$, the thickness of a Hopf link. We also give arguments and evidence supporting the conjecture that the packing density of thick links in $\R^3$ or $\sp^3$ is generally less than $\frac{\pi}{\sqrt{12}}$, the density of the hexagonal packing of unit disks in $\R^2$.

Abstract:We study the relationship between local and global density for sphere packings, and in particular the convergence of packing densities in large, compact regions to the Euclidean limit. We axiomatize key properties of sphere packing bounds by the concept of a packing bound function, and we study the special case of sandwich functions, which give a framework for inequalities given by the Lovász sandwich theorem. We show that every packing bound function tends to a Euclidean limit on rectifiable sets, generalizing the work of Borodachov, Hardin, and Saff. Linear and semidefinite programming bounds yield packing bound functions, and we develop a Lasserre hierarchy that converges to the optimal sphere packing density.

Sphere Packings in Euclidean Space with Forbidden Distances

Abstract:In this paper we study the sphere packing problem in Euclidean space where we impose additional constraints on the separations of the center points. We prove that any sphere packing in dimension $48$, with spheres of radii $r$, such that \emph{no} two centers $x_1$ and $x_2$ satisfy $\sqrt{\tfrac{4}{3}} < \frac{1}{2r}|x_1-x_2| <\sqrt{\tfrac{5}{3}}$, has center density less or equal than $(3/2)^{24}$. Equality occurs for lattice packings if and only if the packing is given by a $48$-dimensional even unimodular extremal lattice. This shows that any of the lattices $P_{48p},P_{48q},P_{48m}$ and $P_{48n}$ are optimal for this constrained packing problem, and gives evidence towards the conjecture that extremal lattices are optimal unconstrained sphere packings in $48$ dimensions. We also provide results for packings up to dimension $d\leq 1200$, where we impose constraints on the distance between centers and on the minimal norm of the spectrum, showing that even unimodular extremal lattices are again uniquely optimal. Moreover, in the $1$-dimensional case, where is not at all clear that periodic packings are among those with largest density, we nevertheless give a condition on the set of constraints that allows this to happen, and we develop an algorithm to find these periodic configurations by relating the problem to a question about dominos.

Abstract:The ball number of a link $L$, denoted by $ball(L)$, is the minimum number of solid balls (not necessarily of the same size) needed to realize a necklace representing $L$. In this paper, we show that $ball(L)\leq 5 cr(L)$ where $cr(L)$ denotes the crossing number of $L$. To this end, we use Lorentz geometry applied to ball packings. The well-known Koebe-Andreev-Thurston circle packing Theorem is also an important brick for the proof. Our approach yields to an algorithm to construct explicitly the desired necklace representation of $L$ in the 3-dimensional space.

Abstract:In this paper, we first prove the variational principle for amenable packing topological pressure. Then we obtain an inequality concerning amenable packing pressure for factor maps. Finally, we show that the equality about packing topological pressure of the set of generic points when the system satisfies the almost specification property, or $\mu$ is ergodic.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that given a hyperbolic polyhedral metric with an inversive distance circle packing, and a target discrete curvature satisfying Gauss-Bonnet formula, there exist a unique inversive distance circle packing which is discrete conformal to the former one. We deform the surface by discrete Ricci flow, and do surgery by edge flipping when the orthogonal circles of some faces are about to be non-compact. The revised weighted Delaunay inequality of hyperbolic case implies the compactness of the orthogonal circle. We use a variational principle of a convex Ricci potential defined on the fiber bundles with cell-decomposition and differential structure based on Teichmüller space to finish the proof.

The topology of compact rank-one ECS manifolds

Abstract:Pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with parallel Weyl tensor that are not conformally flat or locally symmetric, also known as ECS manifolds, have a natural local invariant, the rank, which equals 1 or 2, and is the dimension of a certain distinguished null parallel distribution $\,\mathcal{D}$. All known examples of compact ECS manifolds are of rank one and have dimensions greater than 4. We prove that a compact rank-one ECS manifold, if not locally homogeneous, replaced when necessary by a two-fold isometric covering, must be a bundle over the circle with leaves of $\,\mathcal{D}^\perp$ serving as the fibres. The same conclusion holds in the locally-homogeneous case if one assumes that $\,\mathcal{D}^\perp$ has at least one compact leaf. We also show that in the pseudo-Riemannian universal covering space of any compact rank-one ECS manifold the leaves of $\,\mathcal{D}^\perp$ are the factor manifolds of a global product decomposition.

Hyperbolic Circle Packings and Total Geodesic Curvatures on Surfaces with Boundary

Abstract:This paper investigates a generalized hyperbolic circle packing (including circles, horocycles or hypercycles) with respect to the total geodesic curvatures on the surface with boundary. We mainly focus on the existence and rigidity of circle packing whose contact graph is the $1$-skeleton of a finite polygonal cellular decomposition, which is analogous to the construction of Bobenko and Springborn [4]. Motivated by Colin de Verdière's method [6], we introduce the variational principle for generalized hyperbolic circle packings on polygons. By analyzing limit behaviours of generalized circle packings on polygons, we give an existence and rigidity for the generalized hyperbolic circle packing with conical singularities regarding the total geodesic curvature on each vertex of the contact graph. As a consequence, we introduce the combinatoral Ricci flow to find a desired circle packing with a prescribed total geodesic curvature on each vertex of the contact graph.

Abstract:We prove that for any discrete curvature satisfying Gauss-Bonnet formula, there exist a unique up to scaling inversive distance circle packing in the discrete conformal equivalent class, whose polyhedral metric meets the target curvature. We prove it by constructing diffeomorphism between fiber bundles with cell decomposition based on Teichmüller spaces, and each discrete conformal equivalent class is a fiber passing through finite cell with respect to triangulations, which means we can do surgery on the discrete Ricci flow by edge flipping using a generalized Ptolemy equation to ensure it converge and never blow up.

Abstract:Packing, covering and tiling is a fascinating subject in pure mathematics. It mainly deals with arrangement patterns and efficiencies of geometric objects. This subject has a long and rich history, even back to Kepler, Newton, Lagrange and Gauss. Inspired by its applications and with the help of computing methods, in recent years it has become a very active research area in mathematics once again. Most of the fundamental problems in this subject can be characterized as simple sounding but challenging. This subject has important applications in many other areas such as Number Theory, Logic, Complex Analysis, Optimization, Coding Theory, Crystallography, Material Science, Industry, and even Biology. In spite of the long history, many of its key problems are still open, even in the plane. The purpose of this paper is to present a comprehensive review for packing, covering and tiling in the two-dimensional spaces. We will focus on the key problems, the fundamental results, the creative ideas, some important applications, and some significant connections with other areas.
Filling links and spines in 3-manifolds

Abstract:We introduce and study the notion of filling links in 3-manifolds: a link L is filling in M if for any 1-spine G of M which is disjoint from L, $\pi_1(G)$ injects into $\pi_1(M\smallsetminus L)$. A weaker "k-filling" version concerns injectivity modulo k-th term of the lower central series. For each k>1 we construct a k-filling link in the 3-torus. The proof relies on an extension of the Stallings theorem which may be of independent interest. We discuss notions related to "filling" links in 3-manifolds, and formulate several open problems. The appendix by C. Leininger and A. Reid establishes the existence of a filling hyperbolic link in any closed orientable 3-manifold with $\pi_1(M)$ of rank 2.
