Abstract:Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an uncommon genetic neuromuscular condition manifesting as progressive and irreversible muscular weakness. It is usually diagnosed in childhood, and, unfortunately, individuals living with DMD have a shortened lifespan. DMD has an effect on multiple body systems, leading to complications such as cardiomyopathy, respiratory infections, fragility fractures, and mood disorders. Nurse practitioners working in the primary care setting are in a key position to support the individual by approaching the disease from a multisystem lens, incorporating preventive care to maximize health and well-being at varying stages of the disease process.
