Abstract:Major challenges existing in the photocatalytic gas-liquid mixing system model include the mass transfer limit at the gas-liquid interface and the depth of light penetration. For this purpose, amphiphilic molecular catalysts were prepared by monovacancy phosphomolybdate modified by propyltrimethoxysilane. It is also used as a photocatalyst in the model reaction (molecular oxygen oxidation of aromatic alcohol). The amphiphilic molecular catalyst in the reaction is similar to surfactant behavior, not only can adsorb in the gas-liquid interface, ensure the direct contact between oxygen, catalyst and reactants, improve the efficiency of mass transfer, and also reduce the surface tension of aromatic alcohol, gas-liquid-solid three-phase system into foam system. The formed foam system amplifies the interface area of the reaction, enhances the light penetration depth and significantly promotes the reaction rate. The insights gained from our study provide a new perspective on the design of photocatalysis in a gas-liquid hybrid system.

Abstract:The facile and sustainable production of hydrogen through water reduction requires high performance catalyst consisting of earth abundant elements for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here we report the synthesis of ultrathin molybdenum disulfide/g-carbon nitride (MoS2/g-C3N4) vdW layers via an in situ interfacial engineering method. Such MoS2/g-C3N4 vdW layers show outstanding HER activity with comparable potential and Tafel slope to commercial Pt catalysts. Our experimental data and density functional theory (DFT) based calculations revealed that the unpreceded electrocatalytic performances originate from the strong interfacial coupling of vdW layers through out-of-plane Mo-N bonding, which therefore enhances hydrogen adsorption/reduction kinetics for HER. These findings will shed light on the programmable catalysts for low cost and highly active water reduction.

Abstract:The conversion of syngas into valuable fuels and chemicals has been studied for a long period and is always influenced by water products such as the water-gas shift side reaction to form CO2 and competitive adsorption with reactants, yielding reduced activity. Recently, it has been reported that hydrophobization of the catalysts to accelerate water desorption could efficiently overcome such a limitation and improve catalytic performance in the syngas conversion. In this review, we focus on catalytic performances in the conversion of syngas to methane, dimethyl ether, and olefins by controlling the catalyst hydrophobicity. In addition, we also discuss the chemical modification for hydrophobization of the catalysts. Furthermore, the hydrophobic promoters are specifically mentioned because they could improve syngas conversion by physically mixing with the catalyst without chemical alterations to the catalyst surface. Finally, the concerns and challenges in this field are outlined, and a realistic outlook is suggested for precisely regulating the wettability of the catalysts. We hope that this review will be helpful for designing highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts in the future.

Physical mixing of a catalyst and a hydrophobic polymer promotes CO hydrogenation through dehydration

Abstract:In many reactions restricted by water, selective removal of water from the reaction system is critical and usually requires a membrane reactor. We found that a simple physical mixture of hydrophobic poly(divinylbenzene) with cobalt-manganese carbide could modulate a local environment of catalysts for rapidly shipping water product in syngas conversion. We were able to shift the water-sorption equilibrium on the catalyst surface, leading to a greater proportion of free surface that in turn raised the rate of syngas conversion by nearly a factor of 2. The carbon monoxide conversion reached 63.5%, and 71.4% of the hydrocarbon products were light olefins at 250°C, outperforming poly(divinylbenzene)-free catalyst under equivalent reaction conditions. The physically mixed CoMn carbide/poly(divinylbenzene) catalyst was durable in the continuous test for 120 hours.

Abstract:The contribution of catalyst wettability for catalytic performance has been ignored for a long time. In this Concept, we have briefly summarized recent works on the importance of catalyst wettability for improving catalytic activity, product selectivity, and catalyst stability. Suitable catalyst wettability is favourable for several reasons: 1) to enrich the reactants, leading to enhancement of the catalytic activity; 2) to inhibit side‐reactions, giving desirable products; 3) to reduce the poisoning of active sites and damage to catalyst framework, resulting in an increase of catalyst stability. These advantages of suitable catalyst wettability will be very important for designing and developing novel heterogeneous catalysts in the future.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of C1 molecules, such as CO, CO2 and CH4, into fuels and chemicals is a pivotal area in sustainable energy technologies. This process is crucial for mitigating environmental concerns and closing the carbon cycle loop. Water is a ubiquitous by-product and plays a vital role in these transformations. The presence of water can thermodynamically shift reaction equilibria and poison catalysts, leading to decreased selectivity and efficiency. Gas permeation in multi-phase reaction systems is another challenge in efficient catalyst design. Recent advancements have shown that hydrophobic microenvironments can enhance catalytic performance in C1 transformations by water removal or enhanced gas permeation. This review explores the role of hydrophobic catalysts in key energy-related C1 transformations, focusing on syngas conversion, methane oxidation, as well as electrocatalytic and photocatalytic reduction of CO2. By examining catalyst modifications, physical mixing with hydrophobic promoters, and other innovative catalyst designs, we highlight significant breakthroughs in improving product selectivity, yield, and catalyst longevity, emphasizing its potential to revolutionize sustainable fuel and chemical production from abundant C1 feedstocks.

Abstract:The wettability of catalyst plays an important role in regulating catalytic performance in heterogenous catalysis because the microenvironment around the catalytic sites directly determines the mass transfer process of reactants. Inspired by gas trapped on the surface of subaquatic spiders, amphiphilic micro-organohydrogels with tunable surface wettabilities were developed by anchoring various alkane chains onto a poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (p(DMAEMA)) hydrophilic microgel network. Palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) were encapsulated in amphiphilic microgels (amphiphilic Pd@M) to catalyze hydrogenation reaction, achieving higher activities than pristine monohydrophilic Pd@M composite. The underwater oleophilicity and aerophilicity of Pd@M composites were quantified by oil/gas adhesion measurements and computational simulations. The higher amphiphilic catalytic activities are attributed to the formation of a gas-oil-solid reaction interface on the catalyst surfaces, allowing rapid transport of H2 and organic substrates through water to the Pd catalytic sites. Additionally, amphiphilic Pd@M composites also exhibit more superior catalytic performance in multi-substrates reaction.

Abstract:In this work, Santa Barbara amorphous-15 (SBA-15) mesoporous silica was modified to fabricate hydrophobic microscopic reaction environments that enhanced the catalytic activity of the liquid phase catalytic exchange (LPCE) reaction. The hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity of the environments synthesized using modified SBA-15 was verified by conducting N2 and water vapor adsorption-desorption experiments. A porous composite catalyst, /PVDF, was synthesized via a two-solvent method. The water contact angle of Pt-modified SBA-15 was 152°, proving its superhydrophobicity and granting it excellent catalytic performance for LPCE techniques in hydrogen-water isotope exchange processes. The catalytic performance of the hydrophobic catalyst did not decrease significantly after 30 days of usage.

Abstract:Designing superwettable surfaces for enhancing the reaction efficiencies has been being attracted attention. Herein, we report a distinct strategy that hydrophobic bis((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)imide (NTf2)-based ionic liquids can endow hydrophobic carbon with superhydrophilicity and superoleophilicity simultaneously via a one-step method in a large scale. Wettability mechanisms demonstrate that superhydrophilicity of the as-prepared carbon is mainly attributed to pyridinic N-oxide from the thermolysis of the NTf2 anion, whereas superoleophilicity of the carbon is provided by the elements C and F. Furthermore, superamphiphilic carbon can greatly eliminate the diffusion resistance thereby enhancing the reaction efficiencies in liquid-liquid systems by rapid enrichment of reactants around catalysts and increasing phase interfacial areas. This work provides a general route to construct superamphiphilic carbon that can greatly enhance the reaction efficiencies.

Abstract:Two Janus-type catalysts were synthesized by selective modification and further functionalization with metal nanoparticles on one or both beads of snowman-like Janus particles. The catalytic performance of Janus-type catalysts both in homogeneous and interfacial reaction systems was systematically investigated using the reduction of nitro-compound as model reaction. The results showed that Janus-type catalysts have excellent catalytic activity in homogeneous reaction system and they are easy to recycle. Further, the Janus-type catalysts exhibited more efficient catalytic activity at emulsion interface than that of oil-water biphasic interface due to the exposed Au nanoparticles on snowman-like Janus particles offer high accessibility to reactants.

Abstract:Enriching substrates near catalysts is an effective strategy to improve heterogeneous catalytic performance. The surface of PMMA@PIL-PA patchy nanoparticles is segmented into PMMA and PIL-PA domains. The hydrophobic PMMA domain can enrich water-insoluble substrates, while the hydrophilic PIL-PA one catalyzes the reaction of water-soluble and water-insoluble substrates in close proximity. The special patchy nanoparticles with both a hydrophobic substrate warehouse and catalysis functional divisions can effectively improve the catalytic efficiency. They were employed to catalyze the acetal reaction between water-insoluble benzaldehyde and water-soluble ethylene glycol by phosphotungstic acid (PA). Compared with the homo-nanoparticles, the conversion rate was greatly improved.
Design and Synthesis of Mesoporous Polymer-Based Solid Acid Catalysts with Excellent Hydrophobicity and Extraordinary Catalytic Activity

Abstract:Novel excellent hydrophobic- mesoporous- polymer-based solid acid catalysts have been successfully synthesized by copolymerization of divinylbenzene (DVB) with sodium p-styrene sulfonate (H-PDVB-x-SO3H's) under solvothermal conditions. N-2 isotherms and TEM images showed that H-PDVB-x-SO3H's have high BET surface areas, large pore volumes, and abundant mesoporosity; CHNS element analysis and acid base titration technology showed that H-PDVB-x-SO3H's have adjustable sulfur contents (0.31-2.36 mmol/g) and acidic concentrations (0.26-1.86 mmol/g); TG curves showed that H-PDVB-x-SO3H's exhibited much higher stability of the active site (372 degrees C) than that of the acidic resin of Amberlyst 15 (312 degrees C); contact angle and water adsorption tests showed that H-PDVB-x-SO3H's exhibited excellent hydrophobic properties. Catalytic tests in esterification of acetic add with cyclohexanol, esterification of acetic acid with 1-butanol, and condensation of benzaldehyde with ethylene glycol showed that H-PDVB-x-SO3H's were more active than those of Amberlyst 15, SO3H-functionalized ordered mesoporous silicas, and beta and USY zeolites, which were even comparable with that of homogeneous H2SO4. The superior hydrophobicity of solid acid catalysts would be favorable for achieving excellent catalytic performance because water usually acts as a byproduct in various-acid-catalyzed reactions, which can easily poison the acid sites and result in opposite reactions. Synthesis of porous solid acid catalysts with good hydrophobicity would be very important for their applications.

Abstract:This study is aimed at booming intelligent catalysts, suggesting a bio-inspired polymer catalyst with catalytic substrate-sieving ability. By mimicking the hierarchical multi-level structures in biopolymers, this polymer catalyst was fabricated with metal nanoparticles and double "zipper" conformations individually made of polymeric hydrogen bonds and complexing interactions. Owing to the discrepant strength of both interactions against temperature, the double zipper conformations led to a hierarchical disruption of the two interactions and the stepwise disaggregation of the polymeric networks and as a result the substrate-sieving ability. This catalyst didn't present effective catalysis at low temperatures because of the blocked networks. With the increasing temperatures, this catalyst would first present catalysis towards small molecules of substrate and then further towards bigger molecules of substrate, by virtue of the hierarchical disruption of the weaker hydrogen bonds and the stronger complexing interactions. In this way, this catalyst assumed the substrate-sieving ability. The protocol of this catalyst suggests a prospect to modulate the catalytic proceedings, particularly for complicated processes.

Abstract:There is a strong desire to design and synthesize catalysts that assemble at the oil-water interface to improve the efficiency of biphasic reactions. Anisotropic dumbbell-shaped bi-component mesoporous carbon-organosilica Janus particles with asymmetric wettability are synthesized through a one-step compartmentalized growth of a mesoporous organosilica sphere attached to a mesoporous resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) sphere. A library was prepared of tunable Janus particles possessing diverse hollow structures with various functionalities. As a proof of concept, the Janus particle-derived catalyst can assemble at the oil-water interface to stabilize Pickering emulsions. Owing to the increased reaction interface area, the Janus catalyst exhibits a more than three-fold increase in catalytic efficiency compared to the Pt loaded carbon sphere catalyst in aqueous hydrogenation reactions.

Abstract:Hydrolytic degradation has caused numerous efficient catalytic systems to suffer because in many cases it is impossible to fully exclude water from the reaction systems. Here, we demonstrate an effective strategy of stabilizing water-sensitive organic-ligand-based homogeneous catalysts by constructing them into a superhydrophobic porous framework, which renders them extraordinarily water resistant yet fully retains their intrinsic catalytic activities under heterogeneous systems. Representatively, after metalation of the superhydrophobic porous phosphite-ligand-based framework with Rh species, the resultant catalyst exhibits superior activities and dramatically enhanced durability in mimic continuous hydroformylation processes of the internal olefins in comparison with the homogeneous counterparts. In addition, because it is solid in nature, the catalyst can be readily recycled with negligible loss of performance. Given the modular nature and the broad scope of organic ligands, our work opens a new avenue for stabilizing water-sensitive homogeneous catalysts into highly water-tolerate heterogeneous catalysts.
A hydrophobic FeMn@Si catalyst increases olefins from syngas by suppressing C1 by-products

Abstract:Keeping water away Syngas, a mixture of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen, allows nonpetroleum resources such as biomass and natural gas to be converted to chemical products through Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. However, for the production of olefins, a key feedstock for other chemicals, about 50% of the CO is transformed to carbon dioxide and methane. Xu et al. decreased the selectivity for these undesired by-products to under 25% by modifying their catalyst, nanoparticles of iron doped with manganese and coated with a silica, with methyl groups (see the Perspective by Xie). This hydrophobic surface shortens the retention time of water on the catalyst surface to avoid the unwanted side reactions, and also suppresses oxidation of the metal carbide catalyst that forms under reaction conditions. Abstract:Janus particles have garnered significant attention due to their unique asymmetric structure. Researchers are dedicated to developing an industrial-scale production method for Janus particles. Herein, an oil-in-water emulsion was prepared through one-step mixing of functional monomer glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and the fluorocarbon monomer (perfluorodecyl)ethyl acrylate (FC), which were simultaneously transformed into Janus particles (PFC–PGMA–NH2) with an epoxy group by ultraviolet (UV)-induced free radical polymerization. The incorporation of a composite surfactant solution, comprising sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and a fluorocarbon surfactant (Zonyl FS-300), not only bolsters the stability of the emulsion but also confers control over droplet morphology. By manipulating the surface tension at the interface by varying the ratio of the surfactant to the monomer, fast and precise tuning of the internal droplet geometry was achieved from one-phase to two-phase PFC-in-PGMA/PGMA-in-PFC/Janus emulsions. The incorporation of active epoxy groups into the PFC–PGMA particles facilitates the selectively postfunctionalization reactions to produce amphiphilic PFC–PGMA–NH2 Janus particles. At the oil/water emulsion interface, the conversion rate of the gold-loaded PFC–PGMA–NH2@Au Janus catalyst reached 84.13% after 2 h, exhibiting a remarkable enhancement of 12.7 times compared to that achieved through oil–water two-phase interface catalysis under identical reaction conditions. As solid amphiphilic surfactants, Janus particles with precisely adjustable hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties exhibit exceptional capabilities in stabilizing emulsions. Therefore, they play a crucial role in enhancing catalytic efficiency and regulating active sites during two-phase catalysis. They are expected to be used in protein immobilization, interfacial biocatalysis, and other fields.

Abstract:Desired catalytic performance can be achieved by regulating the wettability of heterogeneous catalysts. Herein, by loading palladium nanoparticles within heterostructural gel supports, we achieved the wettability-controlled selective hydrogenation of phenylacetylene (PT) into styrene (ST) or ethylbenzene (ET) in aqueous media. During catalysis, the selectivity toward ST improved significantly as the catalyst hydrophilicity increased. Additionally, catalyst’s wettability had a negligible influence on its efficiency in the hydrogenation of PT. Mechanistic studies revealed that the catalyst’s wettability has less effect on its affinity for PT but markedly influences its affinity for ST. Hydrophobic catalysts favorably adsorbed semi-hydrogenated products (ST) and fully hydrogenated them to the corresponding ET. Contrastingly, hydrogenation of PT over hydrophilic catalysts remained in a semi-hydrogenated state owing to the quick desorption of ST from the catalyst surface, resulting from weak ST-catalyst interactions. We believe that the proposed strategy will be applicable in a wide range of heterogeneous catalysis reactions.
