Abstract:Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the finite field of order $q$ and $F=\mathbb{F}_q(x)$ the rational function field. In this paper, we give a characterization of the cyclotomic function fields $F(\Lambda_M)$ with modulus $M$, where $M \in \mathbb{F}_q[T]$ is a monic and irreducible polynomial of degree two. We also provide the full automorphism group of $F(\Lambda_M)$ in odd characteristic, extending results of \cite{MXY2016} where the automorphism group of $F(\Lambda_M)$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ was computed.

Abstract:For a real quadratic field $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$, let $K_{\infty}$ denote the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-extension of $K$. Greenberg conjectured that the corresponding Iwasawa module $X_{\infty}$ is finite. Building on the work of Mouhib and Movahhedi, we provide new examples of real quadratic fields for which the conjecture holds, when $X_{\infty}$ is cyclic and the prime is $p=2$. Furthermore, we find a fundamental system of units for certain biquadratic fields of the form $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2}, \sqrt{D})$ and show how to use it to calculate the order of $X_{\infty}$.

Abstract:Let k be a global function field over the finite field F(q) with a fixed place infinity of degree 1. Let K be a cyclic extension of degree dividing q - 1, in which infinity is totally ramified. For a certain abelian extension L of k containing K, there are two notions of the group of cyclotomic units arising from sign normalized rank 1 Drinfeld modules on k and on K. In this article we compare these two groups of cyclotomic units.

Abstract:We study the arithmetic of abelian varieties over $K=k(t)$ where $k$ is an arbitrary field. The main result relates Mordell-Weil groups of certain Jacobians over $K$ to homomorphisms of other Jacobians over $k$. Our methods also yield completely explicit points on elliptic curves with unbounded rank over $\Fpbar(t)$ and a new construction of elliptic curves with moderately high rank over $\C(t)$.

On the Non p-Rationality and Iwasawa Invariants of Certain Real Quadratic Fields

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime, and $m,r \in \mathbb{Z}^+$ with $m$ coprime to $p$. In this paper we investigate the real quadratic fields $K = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{m^2p^{2r} + 1})$. We first show that for $m < C$, where constant $C$ depends on $p$, the fundamental unit $\varepsilon$ of $K$ satisfies the congruence $\varepsilon^{p-1} \equiv 1 \mod{p^2}$, which implies that $K$ is a non $p$-rational field. Varying $r$ then gives an infinite family of non $p$-rational fields. When $m = 1$ and $p$ is a non-Wieferich prime, we use a criterion of Fukuda and Komatsu to show that if $p$ does not divide the class number of $K$, then the Iwasawa invariants for cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$ vanish. We conjecture that there are infinitely many $r$ such that $p$ does not divide the class number of $K$.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a fixed odd prime and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field in which $p$ splits. Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over $K$ with supersingular reduction at both primes above $p$ in $K$. Under certain assumptions, we give a growth estimate for the Mordell--Weil rank of $A$ over finite extensions inside the $\mathbb{Z}_p^2$-extension of $K$. In the last section, written by Chris Williams, he includes some speculative remarks on the $p$-adic $L$-functions for $\mathrm{GSp}(4)$ corresponding to the multi-signed Selmer groups constructed in this paper.

Imaginary quadratic fields $F$ with $X_0(15)(F)$ finite

Abstract:Caraiani and Newton have proven that if $F$ is an imaginary quadratic number field such that $X_0(15)$ has rank $0$ over $F$, then every elliptic curve over $F$ is modular. This paper is concerned with the quadratic fields $F=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p})$ for a prime number $p$. We give explicit conditions on $p$ under which the rank is $0$, and prove that these conditions are satisfied for $87,5\%$ of the primes for which the rank is expected to be even based on the parity conjecture. We also show these conditions are satisfied if and only if rank $0$ follows from a $4$-descent over $\mathbb{Q}$ on the quadratic twist $X_0(15)_{-p}$. To prove this, we perform two consecutive $2$-descents and prove this gives rank bounds equivalent to those obtained from a $4$-descent using visualisation techniques for $\mathrm{Sha}[2]$. In fact we prove a more general connection between higher descents for elliptic curves which seems interesting in its own right.

Nonvanishing of $L$-function of some Hecke characters on cyclotomic fields

Abstract:In this paper, we show the nonvanishing of some Hecke characters on cyclotomic fields. The main ingredient of this paper is a computation of eigenfunctions and the action of Weil representation at some primes including the primes above $2$. As an application, we show that for each isogeny factor of the Jacobian of the $p$-th Fermat curve where $2$ is a quadratic residue modulo $p$, there are infinitely many twists whose analytic rank is zero. Also, for a certain hyperelliptic curve over the $11$-th cyclotomic field whose Jacobian has complex multiplication, there are infinitely many twists whose analytic rank is zero.

Abstract:Let r = pλ, K = Fr(t), f be an irreducible monic polynomial in Fr[t], K(Λf) the cyclotomic function field with conductor f, hf+ the class number of the maximal “real” subfield of K(Λf), hf− the relative class number of K(Λf). The main results in this note are that (1) for each r = pλ > 2 there exist infinitely many irreducible monic polynomials f ∈ Fr[t] with p|hf−; (2) for each r = pλ there exist infinitely many irreducible monic polynomials f ∈ Fr[t] with p|hf+.

Abstract:Abstract We study the $p$-rank stratification of the moduli space $\operatorname{\mathcal{A}\mathcal{S}\mathcal{W}}_{(d_{1},d_{2},\ldots ,d_{n})}$, which represents $\mathbb{Z}/p^{n}$-covers in characteristic $p>0$ whose $\mathbb{Z}/p^{i}$-subcovers have conductor $d_{i}$. In particular, we identify the irreducible components of the moduli space and determine their dimensions. To achieve this, we analyze the ramification data of the represented curves and use it to classify all the irreducible components of the space. In addition, we provide a comprehensive list of pairs $(p,(d_{1},d_{2},\ldots ,d_{n}))$ for which $\operatorname{\mathcal{A}\mathcal{S}\mathcal{W}}_{(d_{1},d_{2},\ldots ,d_{n})}$ in characteristic $p$ is irreducible. Finally, we investigate the geometry of $\operatorname{\mathcal{A}\mathcal{S}\mathcal{W}}_{(d_{1},d_{2},\ldots ,d_{n})}$ by studying the deformations of cyclic covers that vary the $p$-rank and the number of branch points.

Abstract:Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field, and fix a prime $p > 3$ that does not divide the class number of $K$. In this paper we prove that Iwasawa's $\lambda$-invariant for the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$ is greater than $1$ if and only if the number of points on a certain reduced elliptic curve is divisible by $p^2$.

Abstract:Let $k = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt {-m})$ and $p > 2$ split in $k$. We prove new properties of the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions $K/k$, distinct from the cyclotomic; we do not assume $K/k$ totally ramified, nor the triviality of the $p$-class group of $k$. These properties are governed by the $p$-valuation, $\delta_p(k)$, of a suitable Fermat quotient of the fundamental $p$-unit $x$ of $k$, which also yields the order of the logarithmic class group (2.2, App. A), and generalize the Gold-Sands criterion (5.1, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5). These results use the second element $(\mathcal{H}_{K_n}/\mathcal{H}_{K_n}^{G_n})^{G_n}$ of the filtration of the $p$-class groups in $K=\cup_n K_n$, without any argument of Iwasawa's theory, and provide new perspectives. We compute, Sec. 7, the first layer $K_1$, using the Log-function, then give a short proof of a result of Kundu-Washington (5.6), and show (7.4, 7.6) that capitulation is possible in $K$, suggesting Conjecture 5.8. Calculations are gathered App. B.

Abstract:Let F be a quadratic number field. We give a criterion, via Hilbert symbols, for an element of order two in the tame kernel of F to be a fourth power in the tame kernel of F. The result can be applied to compute the 8-rank of the tame kernel of F and the Tate kernel of an imaginary quadratic number field. We list the 8-ranks of K2OF for all quadratic number fields whose discriminants have exactly two odd prime divisors. In the case when F is an imaginary quadratic number field with the 8-rank of K2OF=0, the Tate kernel of F is given too. An application of our method to the maximal real subfield of a cyclotomic field is discussed. Numerical examples, in particular the examples of quadratic number fields F with 4-rank of K2OF= 8-rank of K2OF=2 illustrate our results.
Minimal resolutions of Iwasawa modules

Abstract:In this paper, we study the module-theoretic structure of classical Iwasawa modules. More precisely, for a finite abelian $p$-extension $K/k$ of totally real fields and the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension $K_{\infty}/K$, we consider $X_{K_{\infty},S}={\rm Gal}(M_{K_{\infty},S}/K_{\infty})$ where $S$ is a finite set of places of $k$ containing all ramifying places in $K_{\infty}$ and archimedean places, and $M_{K_{\infty},S}$ is the maximal abelian pro-$p$-extension of $K_{\infty}$ unramified outside $S$. We give lower and upper bounds of the minimal numbers of generators and of relations of $X_{K_{\infty},S}$ as a $\mathbb{Z}_p[[{\rm Gal}(K_{\infty}/k)]]$-module, using the $p$-rank of ${\rm Gal}(K/k)$. This result explains the complexity of $X_{K_{\infty},S}$ as a $\mathbb{Z}_p[[{\rm Gal}(K_{\infty}/k)]]$-module when the $p$-rank of ${\rm Gal}(K/k)$ is large. Moreover, we prove an analogous theorem in the setting that $K/k$ is non-abelian. We also study the Iwasawa adjoint of $X_{K_{\infty},S}$, and the minus part of the unramified Iwasawa module for a CM-extension. In order to prove these theorems, we systematically study the minimal resolutions of $X_{K_{\infty},S}$.

Ranks of abelian varieties in cyclotomic twist families

Abstract:Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a number field $F$, and suppose that $\mathbb Z[\zeta_n]$ embeds in $\mathrm{End}_{\bar F} A$, for some root of unity $\zeta_n$ of order $n = 3^m$. Assuming that the Galois action on the finite group $A[1-\zeta_n]$ is sufficiently reducible, we bound the average rank of the Mordell--Weil groups $A_d(F)$, as $A_d$ varies through the family of $\mu_{2n}$-twists of $A$. Combining this with the recently proved uniform Mordell--Lang conjecture, we prove near-uniform bounds for the number of rational points in twist families of bicyclic trigonal curves $y^3 = f(x^2)$, as well as in twist families of theta divisors of cyclic trigonal curves $y^3 = f(x)$. Our main technical result is the determination of the average size of a $3$-isogeny Selmer group in a family of $\mu_{2n}$-twists.

Abstract:Plectic Stark-Heegner points were recently introduced to explore the arithmetic of higher rank elliptic curves: the concept was inspired by Nekovář and Scholl's plectic philosophy, while the construction is based on Bertolini and Darmon's groundbreaking use of the $p$-adic uniformization of Shimura curves to study the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. In this note we give a geometric interpretation of plectic Heegner points using the non-Archimedean uniformization of higher-dimensional quaternionic Shimura varieties. To this end, we define and study a plectic Jacobian functor from a category of Mumford varieties to topological groups extending the classical Jacobian functor on Mumford curves.

Abstract:We prove a rank-two potential automorphy theorem for mod $l$ representations satisfying an ordinary condition. Combined with an ordinary automorphy lifting theorem, we prove a rank-two, $p \ne l$ case of local-global compatibility for regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic representations of arbitrary weight over CM fields that is $\iota$-ordinary for some $\iota: \overline{\mathbb{Q}}_l\xrightarrow{\sim}\mathbb{C}$.

Abstract:Let $K=\Q(\theta)$ be an algebraic number field with $\theta$ a root of an irreducible quadrinomial $f(x) = x^6+ax^m+bx+c\in\Z[x] $ with $m\in\{2,3,4,5\}$. In the present paper, we give some explicit conditions involving only $a,~b,~c$ and $m$ for which $K$ is non-monogenic. In each case, we provide the highest power of a rational prime $p$ dividing index of the field $K$. In particular, we provide a partial answer to the Problem $22$ of Narkiewicz \cite{Nar} for these number fields. Finally, we illustrate our results through examples.

Abstract:Let $k=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt-m)$ be an imaginary quadratic field. We consider the properties of capitulation of the p-class group of k in the anti-cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $k$, for $p=3$; for this, using a new algorithm, we determine the first layer $k^{\rm ac}_1$ of $k^{\rm ac}$ over $k$ (with absolutely general pari/gp programs that may be used by the reader), and we examine if, at least, some partial capitulation may exist in $k^{\rm ac}_1$. The answer seems obviously yes,even when $k^{\rm ac}/k$ is totally ramified. We have conjectured that this phenomenon of capitulation is specific of all the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of $k$, distinct from the cyclotomic one, whatever $p$. We characterize a family of fields k (called Normal Split cases) for which $k^{\rm ac}$ is not linearly disjoint from the Hilbert class field (Theorem 1.16). Many numerical illustrations are given for p=3 with computation of the 3-class group of $k^{\rm ac}_1$. No assumptions are made on the structure of the 3-class group of $k$, nor on the splitting of 3 in $k$ and in its mirror field $k^*=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt3m)$.
