Abstract:We characterised the spatial structure of soil microbial communities in an unimproved grazed upland grassland in the Scottish Borders. A range of soil chemical parameters, cultivable microbes, protozoa, nematodes, phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) profiles, community-level physiological profiles (CLPP), intra-radical arbuscular mycorrhizal community structure, and eubacterial, actinomycete, pseudomonad and ammonia-oxidiser 16S rRNA gene profiles, assessed by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) were quantified. The botanical composition of the vegetation associated with each soil sample was also determined. Geostatistical analysis of the data revealed a gamut of spatial dependency with diverse semivariograms being apparent, ranging from pure nugget, linear and non-linear forms. Spatial autocorrelation generally accounted for 40-60% of the total variance of those properties where such autocorrelation was apparent, but accounted for 97% in the case of nitrate-N. Geostatistical ranges extending from approximately 0.6-6 m were detected, dispersed throughout both chemical and biological properties. CLPP data tended to be associated with ranges greater than 4.5 m. There was no relationship between physical distance in the field and genetic similarity based on DGGE profiles. However, analysis of samples taken as close as 1 cm apart within a subset of cores suggested some spatial dependency in community DNA-DGGE parameters below an 8 cm scale. Spatial correlation between the properties was generally weak, with some exceptions such as between microbial biomass C and total N and C. There was evidence for scale-dependence in the relationships between properties. PLFA and CLPP profiling showed some association with vegetation composition, but DGGE profiling did not. There was considerably stronger association between notional sheep urine patches, denoted by soil nutrient status, and many of the properties. These data demonstrate extreme spatial variation in community-level microbiological properties in upland grasslands, and that despite considerable numeric ranges in the majority of properties, overarching controlling factors were not apparent.

Abstract:Abstract. Precision Agriculture seeks to match resource application and agronomic practice with soil and crop requirements as they vary in both space and time. Therefore, an understanding of both the temporal and the spatial components of variability is essential before decisions can be made about the feasibility of site‐specific management. In the present study, the spatial and the temporal components of variability in certain key soil properties of a grassland field were evaluated to assess the likely feasibility of adopting a site‐specific approach to grassland management. A 7.9 ha grassland field was selected for the study and soil samples were taken three times at regular 25 m intervals across the field over a two year period, and chemically analysed. Classical and geostatistical procedures were used to evaluate the spatial variability and the temporal stability of soil property distributions. Soil extractable P and K had the greatest within‐field variability and soil pH the least. Soil K distributions were also highly unstable over time and it was concluded that the optimal risk aversion strategy would be to apply uniform dressings of this nutrient to the entire field. In contrast, soil pH, P, Mg and sulphate distributions were not only temporally stable, but were also spatially correlated over reasonably large ranges. It was concluded that these properties might be managed in a site‐specific way based on the results of periodic soil testing in three clearly defined management sub‐units within the field. Over the two year period, C and N accumulated in the soil at surprisingly high rates on certain parts of the field but not in others.
Multi-scale geospatial agroecosystem modeling: a case study on the influence of soil data resolution on carbon budget estimates

Abstract:The development of effective measures to stabilize atmospheric CO2 concentration and mitigate negative impacts of climate change requires accurate quantification of the spatial variation and magnitude of the terrestrial carbon (C) flux. However, the spatial pattern and strength of terrestrial C sinks and sources remain uncertain. In this study, we designed a spatially-explicit agroecosystem modeling system by integrating the Environmental Policy Integrated Climate (EPIC) model with multiple sources of geospatial and surveyed datasets (including crop type map, elevation, climate forcing, fertilizer application, tillage type and distribution, and crop planting and harvesting date), and applied it to examine the sensitivity of cropland C flux simulations to two widely used soil databases (i.e. State Soil Geographic-STATSGO of a scale of 1:250,000 and Soil Survey Geographic-SSURGO of a scale of 1:24,000) in Iowa, USA. To efficiently execute numerous EPIC runs resulting from the use of high resolution spatial data (56m), we developed a parallelized version of EPIC. Both STATSGO and SSURGO led to similar simulations of crop yields and Net Ecosystem Production (NEP) estimates at the State level. However, substantial differences were observed at the county and sub-county (grid) levels. In general, the fine resolution SSURGO data outperformed the coarse resolution STATSGO data for county-scale crop-yield simulation, and within STATSGO, the area-weighted approach provided more accurate results. Further analysis showed that spatial distribution and magnitude of simulated NEP were more sensitive to the resolution difference between SSURGO and STATSGO at the county or grid scale. For over 60% of the cropland areas in Iowa, the deviations between STATSGO- and SSURGO-derived NEP were larger than 1MgCha(-1)yr(-1), or about half of the average cropland NEP, highlighting the significant uncertainty in spatial distribution and magnitude of simulated C fluxes resulting from differences in soil data resolution.

Abstract:Grasslands play an important role in global food security. However, there are increasing pressures to improve the sustainability of ruminant farming. Precision nutrient management tools (e.g., proximal soil sensors for soil mapping) offer opportunities to improve nutrient use efficiency through spatially-variable nutrient application rate maps. Despite little research validating these technologies on grasslands, commercial companies promote these technologies to grassland farmers. In this study, the accuracy of commercial companies offering these services was evaluated by comparing soil pH, P, K, Mg and SOM measurements derived from conventional soil sampling and laboratory analyses to measurements derived from the commercial operators, across a range of soils that are typical found in UK grasslands. Results showed that soil mapping services utilising gamma-ray spectroscopy (GRS) were not sufficiently accurate to predict soil pH, P, K and Mg on grasslands, and subsequently inappropriate for nutrient management planning for variable rate lime and nutrient application. Conversely, both GRS and visible-near infrared spectroscopy (Vis–NIR) accurately predicted between-field SOM variations in grassland soils but not within-field variation. This study emphasises the need for further research to explore the limitations of, and opportunities for, the universal application of these technologies across different soil types and/or land uses before their commercial application. It is therefore highly recommended that commercially-available soil mapping services are subject to certification, similar to centralised soil testing laboratories, to ensure data are accurate for soil management interpretation. The lack of reliability of such systems risks farmers' confidence in the value of soil mapping, which could severely hinder future adoption of potentially valuable technologies.

Variability in Soil Properties at Different Spatial Scales (1 M–1 Km) in a Deciduous Forest Ecosystem

Abstract:The purpose of this research was to test the hypothesis that variability in 11 soil properties, related to soil texture and soil C and N, would increase from small (1m) to large (1km) spatial scales in a temperate, mixed-hardwood forest ecosystem in east Tennessee, USA. The results were somewhat surprising and indicated that a fundamental assumption in geospatial analysis, namely that variability increases with increasing spatial scale, did not apply for at least five of the 11 soil properties measured over a 0.5-km2 area. Composite mineral soil samples (15cm deep) were collected at 1, 5, 10, 50, 250, and 500m distances from a center point along transects in a north, south, east, and westerly direction. A null hypothesis of equal variance at different spatial scales was rejected (P⩽0.05) for mineral soil C concentration, silt content, and the C-to-N ratios in particulate organic matter (POM), mineral-associated organic matter (MOM), and whole surface soil. Results from different tests of spatial variation, based on coefficients of variation or a Mantel test, led to similar conclusions about measurement variability and geographic distance for eight of the 11 variables examined. Measurements of mineral soil C and N concentrations, C concentrations in MOM, extractable soil NH4-N, and clay contents were just as variable at smaller scales (1–10m) as they were at larger scales (50–500m). On the other hand, measurement variation in mineral soil C-to-N ratios, MOM C-to-N ratios, and the fraction of soil C in POM clearly increased from smaller to larger spatial scales. With the exception of extractable soil NH4-N, measured soil properties in the forest ecosystem could be estimated (with 95% confidence) to within 15% of their true mean with a relatively modest number of sampling points (n⩽25). For some variables, scaling up variation from smaller to larger spatial domains within the ecosystem could be relatively easy because small-scale variation may be indicative of variation at larger scales.

Abstract:Soil organic carbon (SOC) and available nitrogen (N) stocks are controlled by the complex interplay of soil physical, chemical, and biological conditions. However, the interrelations of SOC or available N with these drivers as well as their relative importance are rarely evaluated quantitatively. Using investigations of SOC density (SOCD) and available N density (ND) with other detailed soil properties of topsoil (0-10 cm) and subsoil (20-30 cm) from 33 sites under different ecosystems in the vicinity of an eddy flux tower near Sydney, Australia, we investigated the controls of soil physical, chemical, and biological properties (a total of 19 variables) on SOCD and available ND. Structural equation models showed that only physical and chemical properties significantly and directly affected SOCD and available ND. Among these variables, physical and chemical properties were the most influential factors, while the relative influences of microbial biodiversity and enzyme activity were small based on boosted regression tree analysis. In addition, the effects of variables on SOCD and available ND differed between the topsoil and subsoil. In the topsoil, soil physical properties had the highest relative influence followed by chemical properties, enzyme activities, and microbial biodiversity; in the subsoil, however, soil chemical properties had the highest relative importance followed by physical properties, enzyme activities, and microbial biodiversity. This comprehensive soil characterization provides the biogeochemical context for ecosystem carbon cycling being monitored at a nearby eddy flux tower, and demonstrates the importance of including accurate measurements of soil physical and chemical properties to reduce uncertainty in soil C and N predictions in process-based models. However, this is a local-scale study, and large-scale studies are warranted to gain further understanding on this issue.

Abstract:Spatial variability of soil physical and hydrological properties within or among agricultural fields could be intrinsically induced due to geologic and pedologic soil forming factors, but some of the variability may be induced by anthropogenic activities such as tillage practices. No-tillage has been gaining ground as a successful conservation practice, and quantifying spatial variability of soil physical properties induced by no-tillage practices is a prerequisite for making appropriate site-specific agricultural management decisions and/or reformulating some management practices. In particular, there remains very limited information on the spatial variability of soil physical properties under long-term no-tillage corn and tropical soil conditions. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to quantify the spatial variability of some selected soil physical properties (soil surface temperature (ST), volumetric water content (θv), soil resistance (TIP), total porosity (θt), bulk density (ρb), organic carbon, and saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat)) using classical and geostatistical methods. The study site was a 2 ha field cropped no-tillage sweet corn for nearly 10 years on Oahu, Hawaii. The field was divided into 10 × 10 and 20 × 20 m grids. Soil samples were collected at each grid for measuring ρb, θt, and soil organic carbon (SOC) in the laboratory following standard methods. Saturated hydraulic conductivity, TIP at 10 and 20 cm depths, soil surface temperature, and θv were also measured. Porosity and ρb have low and low to moderate variability, respectively based on the relative ranking of the magnitude of variability drawn from the coefficient of variation. Variability of the SOC, TIP, and Ksat ranges from moderate to high. Based on the best-fitted semivariogram model for finer grid data, 9.8 m and 142.2 m are the cut off beyond which the measured parameter does not show any spatial correlation for SOC, and TIP at 10 cm depth, respectively. Bulk density shows the highest spatial dependence (range = 226.8 m) among all measured properties. Spatial distribution of the soil properties based on kriging shows a high level of variability even though the sampled field is relatively small.

Abstract:Spatial variability in N uptake and utilisation by swards within uniformly managed field units could be responsible for a significant proportion of the NH3, N2O, NO3- and NOx (NO and NO2) 'pollutants' generated by agriculture and released to the environment. An investigation was commenced, therefore, to quantify, map and explain the spatial variability in sward N yield in a 'large' silage field and to assess the potential for managing this variability using some of the latest precision agriculture technology. Sward dry matter (DM) and N yields were predicted from the results of plant tissue analyses using mathematical models. Sward N yields were found to vary greatly across the field seemingly because of differences in net soil N mineralisation, but the pattern of variability appeared to remain constant with time. Conventional soil analysis of a range of soil chemical and physical properties, however, failed to explain this variability. It was concluded that the N-yield distribution map might be used in place of soil analysis as the basis for varying the rates of N application to different parts of the field with the twin objectives of maximising fertiliser use efficiency and minimising N emissions to air and water.

Abstract:The site specific management of variable rate nitrogen (N) fertiliser application to crops is a cost-effective system that optimises outputs and reduces environmental impact. However, its implementation requires information on the spatial variability of soil and crop variables and, especially, of the N supply from the soil, measured as the available N and the N mineralized from organic matter. The objective of this study was to obtain the spatial structure of the variation of net N mineralization, within the field scale in a cereal cropping system, in order to improve site specific N management. A nested sampling survey was conducted in the field using scales of variation at 1.5, 4.5, 13.5, 40.5 and 121.5 m, arranged in hierarchical order with n = 96 samples. Samples were collected in autumn and spring and N mineralization measured by aerobic incubation. The components of variance of the N mineralized were calculated using residual maximum likelihood and used to produce an approach to the variogram. The within-field spatial variation was almost all (92–93%) encompassed by the scales of variation measured, all occurring within 40.5 m in both seasons. However, there was a significant amount of fine scale variation at 1.5 m in autumn and 4.5 m in spring. These results will guide future spatial sampling of the N supply, and soil monitoring in general.

Abstract:Unlike the situation for arable soils, virtually nothing is known about the spatial dependencies of soil properties in cool temperate grassland or about what the optimal sampling strategies ought to be for mapping soil nutrient distributions in such situations. The aim of this study was to investigate the spatial variability in ‘plant-available’ (soil) phosphorus and potassium in a grass silage field in Northern Ireland and devise ‘optimal’ sampling strategies for mapping their distributions. Soil samples were collected from the field at 25 m intervals in a regular rectangular grid to provide a database of soil properties. Different data combinations were subsequently abstracted from this database for comparison purposes, and ordinary kriging used to produce interpolated soil maps. Soil potassium displayed greater spatial variability than soil phosphorus. In keeping with this observation, the results of three separate statistical procedures demonstrated that the optimal sample size for estimating the ‘true’ population means was about twice as large for soil potassium as for soil phosphorus. Optimal sampling strategies, however, related not just to sample size but to sample combination and field shape as well.
Spatial Variants and Sampling Strategies of Soil Properties for Precision Agriculture

Abstract:Field nutrient distribution maps obtained from the study on soil variation within fields are the basis of precision agriculture. The quality of these maps and value for management depends on the accuracy of the predicted values, which in true depends on the initial sampling. To produce reliable predictions efficiently the minimal sampling size and combination should be decided firstly, which avoides the misspent funds for field sampling work. A 7.9 hectare silage field close to the Agricultural Research Institute at Hillsborough, Northern Ireland, was selected for the study. Grid sampling method (25m×25 m) was adopted and there were 123 sampling points in this field. Based on all sampling data, the least required numbers of soil properties were calculated for a 95% confidence within 5% of population mean. Using the geo-statistical method of Kriging with the data in the various sampling combinations for soil available P and K were made at sampling points from which the known values had been removed. These predicted data groups were compared using Least Significant Difference (LSD) test method. The results showed that the 62 sampling size of triangle arrangement for soil available K were sufficient to fulfil the required accuracy. The triangular design to be more efficient of Kriging than a rectangular or hexagonal sampling arrangement.

Abstract:Despite the importance of phosphorus (P) as a nutrient for all life, its availability is highly constrained in terrestrial ecosystems. The availability of P to plants and microbes is regulated by abiotic processes (e.g. P sorption/desorption, precipitation/dissolution) and biological activities (microbial P immobilization/organic P mineralization). Due to the strong geochemical component of the P cycle, it can be expected that soil C, N and P cycling may differ in terms of effects of geology, climate and management. Despite advances in our understanding of physico-chemical controls on P availability, there is still little mechanistic understanding of large scale controls on soil P cycling and its relation to soil C and N cycling, due to a lack of broad scale studies using common methodologies.Here we aimed to investigate soil physicochemical and biological factors that drive soil P cycling and may cause a (de)coupling of C, N and P processes. We therefore sampled mineral topsoils (0-10 cm, n=95) across a continental transect in Europe (Southern Spain to Northern Scandinavia), covering major geological, climatic and land use gradients. The soils derived from different land uses (cropland, grassland, forest/woodland) and bedrock types (silicate, sediment, calcareous). We analyzed a wide range of potentially relevant physico-chemical and biological properties and measured gross rates of soil N and P processes by short term (24 h) incubations of soils with 33P and 15N following isotope pool dilution approaches.(i) Across the whole transect land-use effects on soil P pools and processes exceeded those of geology, reflecting the accumulation of fertilizer P in soils of managed ecosystems. Cropland (and grasslands) had higher values of soil total P and soil inorganic P (Pi), available Pi (Olsen P), and gross Pi mobilization rates by abiotic and biotic processes compared to forests. Soil phosphatase activity did not vary between land-uses. Soils on silicate bedrock had significantly higher total and labile P than calcareous soils.(ii) Climate differentially affected P pools and processes. Soil total P, dissolved organic P, and gross Pi desorption decreased with mean annual temperature (MAT; these properties were not sensitive to mean annual precipitation - MAP), while soil phosphatase activity and gross total Pi mobilization through abiotic and biotic processes increased with MAP but were insensitive to MAT. This clearly points to adverse climatic controls of biotic and abiotic soil P processes.(iii) We found strong interlinkages between soil C, N and P pools (soil organic matter and microbial biomass) and soil enzymes (beta-glucosidase, chitinase, phosphatase) but not in related gross processes (respiration, N and P mineralization). Interestingly the slopes of C-P and N-P relations of pools and enzymes differed systematically between land-uses, indicating that land management causes a partial decoupling of P from C and N cycles, reflecting the P-richness of croplands.

Abstract:Spatial variability in soil pH is a major contributor to within-field variations in soil fertility and crop productivity. An improved understanding of the spatial variability of soil pH within agricultural fields is required to determine liming requirements for precision farming. This study with the use of proximal sensors, firstly assessed the spatial pattern of soil pH and how it can be used to determine site-specific, spatially variable lime requirements. Secondly, the effects of soil pH on soil concentrations of nitrate nitrogen (N03-N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), sulfur (SO4-S), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), soil organic matter (SOM), aluminum (Al), and manganese (Mn) were assessed in three study fields in central Alberta, Canada. Soil pH varied between 4.5 and 7.5 across all field sites. The field-scale coefficient of variation (CV %) for soil pH, Al and Mn ranged between 4.39 and 7.50 %, 7.33-13.72 %, and 7.33-13.72 % across the three sites. The other soil properties showed low, moderate, and high variability, with field-scale CVs ranging between 6.39 and 17.70 % for SOM and 24.33-91.39 % for SO4-S. Soil pH exhibited positive correlations with both Ca and Mg, across all fields. Negative correlations were observed between soil pH and Al across all fields. A principal component analysis (PCA) was performed for all soil parameters and two principal components accounted for 50 %, 54.9 %, and 76.8 % of the total variance in field 1, field 2, and field 3, respectively. Geostatistical semivariance indicated a strong spatial dependence of all chemical parameters across fields. Large regions within a field were strongly acidic (pH < 5.5) and required lime applications ranging from 0 to 6 t ha-1. We conclude that proximal soil sensors can be calibrated to soil properties, enabling variable rate lime recommendations on spatially variable fields for the management of soil acidity.

Abstract:With the introduction of GPS and GIS, the spatial variability of soil properties was measured and analyzed using traditional statistics method and geo-statistics. 63 sampling points were measured on a 50m grid in the soil surface (0~20cm) of a 13.3 hectare winter-wheat field and were positioned by the GPS receiver. The results show that all soil nutrients are normal distribution and represent moderate spatial variability. The organic matter, total-N, NH 4-N, and available K have strong spatial correlation, while the available P exhibits moderate spatial variability, and the range of soil properties is 265.8-349.7m. The standard errors of the 63 sampling points were respectively computed in kriging interpolation method. The results indicate that the errors increased with the decrease of the sampling points. The 50m X 100m and 100m X 100m sampling schemes were recommended for their higher precision and economical efficiency. Thus, they are preferable in the large-scale sampling.
Evaluating Intra-Field Spatial Variability for Nutrient Management Zone Delineation through Geospatial Techniques and Multivariate Analysis

Abstract:This research study underscores the importance of effectively managing soil nutrients in a site-specific manner to enhance crop productivity while considering the spatial variability of the soil. The objective is to identify subfields with similar soil characteristics, referred to as management zones (MZs), to promote sustainable land utilization. This study was conducted in two central pivot fields located in Southern Idaho, USA, where barley and sugar beets were grown. Soil samples were collected from each field in a grid pattern and analyzed for various chemical properties. These properties included soil pH, organic matter, cation exchange capacity, excess lime, electrical conductivity, total inorganic nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, manganese, copper, and boron. Descriptive statistics and normality assessments were performed, and the coefficient of variation was calculated to assess the heterogeneity of soil properties, revealing significant variability. To determine the spatial variability of soil properties, ordinary kriging was used revealing diverse spatial patterns for each location and soil variable examined with moderate to strong spatial dependence. To develop the MZs, a combination of principal component analysis and fuzzy k-means clustering was utilized, and specific parameters that represented the overall variability of soil properties in each field were identified. Based on the identified parameters, two clusters were created in each field. The first management zone (MZ1) exhibited lower values of soil pH, excess lime content, and electrical conductivity compared to the MZ2. Consequently, higher crop productivity was observed in MZ1 in both fields. The biomass yields of barley and sugar beets in MZ1 surpassed those in MZ2. This study highlights the effectiveness of the methodology employed to delineate MZs, which can be instrumental in precise soil nutrient management and maximizing crop productivity.

Abstract:Spatio‐temporal heterogeneity in soil water content is recognized as a common phenomenon, but heterogeneity in the hydrogen and oxygen isotope composition of soil water, which can reveal processes of water cycling within soils, has not been well studied. New advances are being driven by measurement approaches allowing sampling with high density in both space and time. Using in situ soil water vapour probe techniques, combined with conventional soil and plant water vacuum distillation extraction, we monitored the hydrogen and oxygen stable isotopic composition of soil and plant waters at paired sites dominated by grasses and Gambel's oak (Quercus gambelii) within a semiarid montane ecosystem over the course of a growing season. We found that sites spaced only 20 m apart had profoundly different soil water isotopic and volumetric conditions. We document patterns of depth‐ and time‐explicit variation in soil water isotopic conditions at these sites and consider mechanisms for the observed heterogeneity. We found that soil water content and isotopic variability were damped under Q. gambelii, perhaps due in part to hydraulic redistribution of deep soil water or groundwater by Q. gambelii in these soils relative to the grass‐dominated site. We also found some support for H isotope discrimination effects during water uptake by Q. gambelii. In this ecosystem, the soil water content was higher than that at the neighbouring Grass site, and thus, 25% more water was available for transpiration by Q. gambelii compared with the Grass site. This work highlights the role of plants in governing soil water variation and demonstrates that they can also strongly influence the isotope ratios of soil water. The resulting fine‐scale heterogeneity has implications for the use of isotope tracers to study soil hydrology and evaporation and transpiration fluxes to improve understanding of water cycling through the soil–plant–atmosphere continuum.

Abstract:There is a lack of field methods for measuring plant and soil processes controlling soil organic matter (SOM) turnover over diurnal, seasonal, and longer time‐scales with which to develop datasets for modelling. We describe an automated field system for measuring plant and soil carbon fluxes over such time‐scales using stable isotope methods, and we assess its performance. The system comprises 24 large (1‐m deep, 0.8‐m diameter) cylindrical lysimeters connected to gas‐flux chambers and instruments. The lysimeters contain intact, naturally‐structured C3 soil planted with a C4 grass. Fluxes of CO2 and their 13C isotope composition are measured 3‐times daily in each lysimeter, and the isotope composition is used to partition the fluxes between plant and soil sources. We investigate the following potential sources of error in the measurement system and show they do not significantly affect the measured CO2 fluxes or isotope signatures: gas leaks; the rate of gas flow through sampling loops; instrument precision and drift; the concentration‐dependence of isotope measurements; and the linearity of CO2 accumulation in the chambers and associated isotope fractionation resulting from different rates of 13CO2 and 12CO2 diffusion from the soil. For the loamy grassland soil and US prairie grass (Bouteloua dactyloides ) tested, the precision of CO2 flux measurements was ±0.04% and that of the flux partitioning ±0.40%. We give examples of diurnal and seasonal patterns of plant and soil C fluxes and soil temperature and moisture. We discuss the limitations of the isotope methodology for partitioning fluxes as applied in our system. We conclude the system is suitable for measuring net ecosystem respiration fluxes and their plant and soil components with sufficient precision to resolve diurnal and seasonal patterns.

Abstract:Understanding topography effects on soil properties is vital to modelling landscape hydrology and establishing sustainable on-field management practices. This research focuses on an arable area (117 km2) in Southwestern Ethiopia where agricultural fields and bush cover are the dominant land uses. We postulate that adapting either of the soil data resources, coarse resolution FAO-UNESCO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) soil data or pedo-transfer functions (PTFs) is not reliable to indicate future watershed management directions. The FAO-UNESCO data does not account for scale issues and assigns the same soil property at different landscape gradients. The PTFs, on the other hand, do not account for environmental effects and fail to provide all the required data. In this regard, mapping soil property spatial dynamics can help understand landscape physicochemical processes and corresponding land use changes. For this purpose, soil samples were collected across the watershed following a gridded sampling scheme. In areas with heterogeneous topography, soil is spatially variable as influenced by land use and slope. To understand the spatial variation, this research develops indicators, such as topographic index, soil topographic wetness index, elevation, aspect, and slope. Pearson correlation (r), among others, was used to investigate terrain effects on selected soil properties: organic matter (OM), available water content (AWC), sand content (%), clay content (%), silt content (%), electrical conductivity (EC), moist bulk density (MBD), and saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat). The results show that there were statistically significant correlations between elevation-based variables and soil physical properties. Among the variables considered, the ‘r’ value between topographic index and soil attributes (i.e., OM, EC, AWC, sand, clay, silt, and Ksat) were 0.66, 0.5, 0.7, 0.55, 0.62, 0.4, and 0.66, respectively. In conclusion, while understanding topography effects on soil properties is vital, implementing either FAO-UNESCO or PTFs soil data do not provide appropriate information pertaining to scale issues.
Micro-Environmental Variation in Soil Microbial Biodiversity in Forest Frontier Ecosystems—Implications for Sustainability Assessments

Abstract:Soil health indicators based on microbial biodiversity are increasingly used in agricultural sustainability assessments. However, little is known about how microbial communities vary within micro-environmental gradients across different land uses, which is crucial for designing field sampling and monitoring protocols. Our objective was to assess how soil microbial communities changed with soil depth and spatial distance across land-use types. We sampled soils in four spatial distances (within 0.1–70 m) and four depths (within 0–40 cm) in forests, grasslands, and horticultural lands, and combined 16S rRNA gene sequencing, DNA quantification and soil chemical characterization to explore micro-environmental variation in microbial biomass, α-β-diversity, and communities' assembly processes. Depth and spatial distance had differential effects on microbial biodiversity within different land uses. Microbial biomass was most sensitive to depth, α-diversity to spatial distance, and β-diversity to both depth and spatial distance. Deterministic processes dominate microbial communities' assembly along depth in all land uses, which is a promising result for developing soil quality indicators based on microbial biodiversity. Overall, our results suggest that collecting soil samples separated by at least 12 m is adequate to capture biodiversity changes across land uses. However, collecting randomly within the first 10 cm is recommended for native forests, while systematic sampling within the first 20 cm is advised for grasslands and horticultural lands. Our findings underscore the need for land use-specific sampling frameworks in soil life-based sustainability assessments for meaningful regional comparisons.
