Abstract:Background: A growing body of literature suggests that early life circumstances can influence mental health throughout the lifespan. However, how these early life circumstances cumulatively contribute to depression in old age is not completely understood. The aim of this study was to examine the associations of eight factors with depression among community-dwelling older adults. Methods: Data were from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. We included 8,239 community-dwelling individuals who were >= 60 years, completed the life history questionnaire, and had assessment of depression. An early life disadvantage index was established using risk factors that were significantly associated with depression. Logistic regression was used to examine the association of each early life risk factor and the index with depression. Results: Of 8239 individuals included, 2,055 (24.9%) had depression. In bivariate analysis, each of eight early life risk factors was significantly associated with depression. Except for maternal and paternal education, all risk factors persisted to be associated with depression after multivariable adjustment. In the multivariable-adjusted model, a one-point higher in the early life disadvantage index (range: 0-6) was associated with a 45% (95% CI: 37%, 53%) higher odds of depression. Limitations: Depressive symptoms were measured in our study only by the CES-D scale. Some early life experi-ences might not be fully reliable due to recall bias. Conclusion: There was a strong association between early life environments and depressive symptoms among Chinese community-dwelling older adults. Adverse early life circumstances could contribute cumulatively to depression in old age.

Abstract:Cognitive models of social anxiety and depression posit that hostile interpretation bias may be a symptom of, and act as a maintenance factor for, these disorders. Social anxiety and depression are also associated with increased experience of angry and irritable mood. To investigate whether hostile interpretation bias is related to symptoms of the disorder or to irritability, the current study investigated the degree to which state irritable mood may influence these relationships. In two samples, MTurk workers (Sample 1, n = 145) and college students (Sample 2, n = 387), we assessed depression symptoms, social anxiety symptoms, irritable mood, and hostile interpretation bias. In sample 1, depression and social anxiety symptoms were positively associated with hostile interpretation bias. When statistically controlling for irritable mood, depression symptoms no longer significantly predicted hostile interpretation bias. However, social anxiety remained a significant predictor of hostile interpretation bias even when controlling for irritable mood. The pattern of results was identical in sample 2. Results indicate that the association between depression symptoms and hostile interpretation bias may be accounted for by irritable mood, but social anxiety symptoms have a unique association with hostile interpretation bias even when including irritable mood. Clinical implications and future directions are discussed.

Abstract:Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) with comorbid anxiety is very common and is associated with worse clinical outcomes. MDD patients at different ages of onset may have different clinical features and asso-ciated factors. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of anxiety and related factors in MDD patients at different ages of onset.Methods: A total of 1718 first-episode and drug-naive (FEDN) MDD patients were recruited. The cutoff point for early-adulthood onset (EAO) and mid-adulthood onset (MAO) was the first depressive episode before or after age 45 years. Clinical features (depressive, anxiety and psychiatric symptoms) and some metabolic parameters were collected.Results: There was no significant difference in the prevalence of anxiety between EAO patients (50.7 %) and MAO patients (55.7 %). For EAO patients, regression analysis showed that TSH levels, TgAb levels, and TC levels were significantly associated with anxiety. For MAO patients, regression analysis showed that anxiety was associated with HDL-c levels and impaired glucose metabolism. Furthermore, suicide attempts, psychotic symptoms, and depression severity were correlated with anxiety in both groups. Limitations: Our cross-sectional study cannot explain the causal relationship between anxiety and related factors in MDD patients at different ages of onset. Conclusions: This study revealed that the clinical characteristics and factors associated with anxiety in MDD patients differed according to age of onset, and therefore age of onset needs to be considered while treating anxiety.
Anxious youth and adults share threat-biased interpretations of linguistic and visual ambiguity: A proof of concept study

Abstract:Interpretation bias, or the threatening appraisal of ambiguous information, has been linked to anxiety disorder. Interpretation bias has been demonstrated for linguistic (e.g., evaluation of ambiguous sentences) and visual judgments (e.g., categorizing emotionally ambiguous facial expressions). It is unclear how these separate components of bias might be associated. We examined linguistic and visual interpretation biases in youth and emerging adults with ( n = 44) and without ( n = 40) anxiety disorder, and in youth-parent dyads ( n = 40). Linguistic and visual biases were correlated with each other, and with anxiety. Compared to non-anxious participants, those with anxiety demonstrated stronger biases, and linguistic bias was especially predictive of anxiety symptoms and diagnosis. Age did not moderate these relationships. Parent linguistic bias was correlated with youth anxiety but not linguistic bias; parent and youth visual biases were correlated. Linguistic and visual interpretation biases are linked in clinically-anxious youth and emerging adults.

Abstract:Interpretation bias, described as the tendency to interpret social situations in a negative or threatening manner, has been widely linked to social anxiety in adult populations. This study aimed to extend research on interpretation bias to an adolescent population. Thirty-seven high socially anxious and a control group of 36 non-socially anxious adolescents rated the likelihood of different interpretations of ambiguous social and non-social situations coming to mind and which interpretation they most believed. Results showed that negative interpretations of social situations were more common in the high anxious than control group. Such negative bias could not be accounted for by high levels of negative affect. The groups did not differ as to their positive interpretations. Furthermore, there was evidence for content specificity of interpretation bias; high anxious adolescents were not more negative than control participants in their interpretations of non-social situations. Findings are discussed in relation to the adult literature and their clinical relevance is considered.

Abstract:Interpretation bias is often theorized to play a critical role in depression and social anxiety. To date, it remains unknown how interpretation bias exerts its toxic effects. Interpretation inflexibility may be an important determinant of how distorted interpretations affect emotional well-being. This study investigated interpretation bias and inflexibility in relation to depression severity and social anxiety. Participants ( N = 212) completed a novel cognitive task that simultaneously measured bias and inflexibility in the interpretation of unfolding ambiguous situations. Depression severity was associated with increased negative and decreased positive interpretation biases. Social anxiety was associated with increased negative interpretation bias. Critically, both symptom types were related to reduced revision of negative interpretations by disconfirmatory positive information. These findings suggest that individuals with more severe depression or social anxiety make more biased and inflexible interpretations. Future work examining cognitive risk for depression and anxiety could benefit from examining both these factors.

Abstract:We examined age differences in the within-person relationships among perceived stress (PS), perceived stress reactivity (PSR), and depressive affect (DA) as well as potential mechanisms of depression with a longitudinal moderated mediation model. Participants from the Notre Dame Study of Health & Wellbeing (N = 572) completed two to four waves of yearly assessments. Sequentially built multilevel models, in which year was nested within person, illustrated that only midlife adults experience an exacerbated effect of within-person fluctuations in PSR on the relationship between within-person PS and DA levels (γ41 = -.004, p < .01). Findings further suggest that PSR accounts for the PS-DA relationship. Furthermore, older adults illustrate successful emotion regulation strategies at the yearly level-resisting the negative ramifications of years of greater PS and PSR, whereas midlife adults who experience years of greater PSR would particularly benefit from stress management interventions and monitoring of DA levels.

However, it is unclear whether these interpretation biases are specific to distinct problems or whether they are general psychopathological phenomena. The specificity versus pervasiveness of interpretation biases could also differ depending on mental health status. Therefore, in the current study, we investigated whether social anxiety and callous-unemotional (CU) traits were uniquely related to threatening and hostile interpretation biases, respectively, in both a community and a clinical sample of adolescents.

Abstract:Background Cognitive biases are found to play a role in the onset and maintenance of social anxiety. However, particularly in adolescence, the link between different biases and their role in predicting social anxiety is far from clear. This study therefore investigated the interplay between attention bias and interpretation bias in relation to social anxiety in adolescence across three years. Methods 816 adolescents in grade 7 to 9 participated at three yearly waves (52.8% boys, M age grade7 = 12.60). Social anxiety was measured with a self-report questionnaire. Attention bias was measured with a visual search task with emotional faces. Textual vignettes assessed interpretation bias. Results Cross-lagged models showed that negative interpretation bias at grade 7 predicted an increase in social anxiety at grade 8. This effect was not found from grade 8 to 9. Attention bias did not predict social anxiety. Attention bias and interpretation bias were not longitudinally related to each other, nor did they interact with each other in predicting social anxiety. Conclusions Thus, no evidence was found for the Combined Cognitive Bias Hypothesis in social anxiety in adolescents. Instead, our results suggest that interpretation bias rather than attention bias contributes to the increase of social anxiety over time.

Abstract:Identifying sources of heterogeneity in late life depression remains an important focus of psychiatric investigation. Community samples are particularly informative since many older adults have clinically significant depressive symptoms but fail to meet criteria for major depression and older adults generally do not seek treatment for their depressive symptoms. The primary data used for these analyses were those collected in a community-based survey of over 3000 adults age 65 or older followed for up to ten years. Depressive symptoms were measured by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression scale (CES-D). Latent class analysis was used to identify clusters of participants based on their symptom profiles at baseline. Mixed models were used to examine trajectories of CES-D scores based on cluster assignment. A model with three unique clusters best fit the data. Cluster 1 (59%) had a low probability of any symptom endorsement. Cluster 2 (31%) endorsed as a group some negative affect and somatic symptoms but their endorsement of low positive affect did not differ from Cluster 1. Participants in Cluster 3 (10%) had a higher probability of endorsement of all symptoms compared to Clusters 1 and 2. The results did not appreciably differ when symptom severity was included. Cluster assignment was a significant predictor of change in CES-D score over the ten-year follow-up period, and the effects over time differed by sex. Depressive symptom profiles predict the longitudinal course of depression in a community sample of older adults, findings that are important especially in primary care settings.

Abstract:Abstract Background In face-to-face (offline) social situations a tendency, or bias, to negatively interpret ambiguous situations is consistently related to social anxiety. Although social interactions increasingly occur over the Internet (online), our understanding of cognitive processes in online social situations and how they relate to social anxiety, social experiences, and behavior, is limited. Methods In a sample of 324 young people (18–25 years), the current study addressed this gap in two ways: by simultaneously investigating online and offline interpretation bias in relation to social anxiety; and examining the extent to which online interpretation bias predicts peer victimization and avoidance. Results In line with hypotheses, online and offline interpretation bias each correlated positively with social anxiety; the offline interpretation bias-social anxiety association was stronger. Regression analyses revealed unique associations between online interpretation bias and online peer victimization and avoidance, after controlling for social anxiety and offline interpretation bias. Discussion Findings suggest that cognitive behavioral interventions for social anxiety could be optimized through eliciting and testing negative social beliefs related to online social settings. Conclusions The current study’s results indicate the importance of studying online interpretation bias to further understand social anxiety in online social environments.

Abstract:Objective This study investigated to what extent a range of depressive symptoms was differentially present depending on age group in Korean population.Methods Data was pooled from five nationally representative surveys in which 29,418 respondents aged at least 18 years were interviewed face-to-face using the Korean version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview. A total of 691 (2.1%) respondents were found to have had at least 1 episode of major depressive disorder (MDD) within the last 12 months. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify the association between age groups (18–39 years, 40–59 years, and 60 years or older) and 26 depressive symptoms among the respondents with MDD.Results Associations were observed between somatic symptoms—including insomnia, awakening 2 h earlier—and cognitive symptoms such as feelings of guilt, thoughts of death, and suicidal ideation with the older age group. Whereas, atypical depressive symptoms such as increased appetite, weight gain, and hypersomnia were associated with the younger age group. When adjusted for sociodemographic factors, symptoms such as depressed mood, awakening 2 h earlier, and feeling guilty in the older age group, and hypersomnia, psychomotor retardation, and worse in the morning in the younger age group still remained statistically significant. Furthermore, fatigue and decreased libido were newly associated with the younger age group.Conclusion The findings of this study revealed distinct patterns of symptomatology in MDD based on age groups. These differences should be considered owing to their potential relevance to treatment response and prognosis in the clinical setting.

Abstract:Objective: This study aims to examine age differences in the relationship between frailty and depression among older adults Methods: A total of 1789 community-dwelling older adults were recruited from eastern China. Physical frailty and depressive symptoms were assessed using the Frailty Phenotype and the 5-item Geriatric Depression Scale, respectively. Results: The hierarchical multiple linear regression analysis revealed that frailty was significantly related to depressive symptoms (beta = 0.272, P < 0.001) and there was a significant interaction between age and frailty (beta = -0.703, P < 0.001). The Johnson-Neyman plot revealed that the relationship between frailty and depressive symptoms became weaker as people aged. Conclusions: Frailty is more likely to cause depressive symptoms among the young-old than among the old-old, reflecting the age-related positivity effect. This highlights that interventions on emotional regulation should particularly target the young-old to reduce the effect of frailty on depression. (C) 2020 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Depression is a heterogeneous disorder, both in terms of patient symptomatology and in patient sociodemographic factors. Here, we examine the contribution of age to this heterogeneity, by characterizing the associations of depressive symptoms with cognitive performance and brain structure across the lifespan. We analyzed data from the Cambridge Centre for Aging Neuroscience (Cam-CAN) cohort ( N = 2591, age 18–99). A subset of this cohort ( N = 647) underwent structural MRI. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Cognitive assessments were performed using The Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination Revised. Generalized linear models were employed to examine the relationship between depressive symptoms and cognitive performance. Statistical parametric mapping explored age-dependent associations between depressive symptoms and grey matter volume. Cognitive performance was associated with a significant age by depression by cognitive domain interaction, indicating that older individuals with more depressive symptoms had a lower cognitive performance, particularly in the fluency domain. Structural MRI revealed preferential depression-related reduction in grey matter volume in the left and right hippocampi in older adults. By contrast, in younger adults, depressive symptoms were more strongly associated with grey matter volume reduction in the left superior frontal gyrus and left middle frontal gyrus. Collectively, these findings indicate that the associations of depression with cognitive performance and brain structure are age-dependent, suggesting that the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying depression may differ between young and older adults. Recognizing these differences will support the development of better diagnostic tools and therapeutic interventions for depression across the lifespan.

Abstract:Background: This study aimed to examine the differences in negative interpretation bias in ambiguous social situations according to social anxiety level and then confirm the degree of negative interpretation bias according to the relational intimacy with the interacting partner.Methods: A total of 405 adults in their 20s completed the surveys that measured the levels of social interaction anxiety, and the highest 10% (n=30) and lowest 10% (n=30) scorers finally participated in the study. This study used a 2 (high/low social anxiety)×3 (relational intimacy: a stranger/a moderately intimate person/a very intimate person) factorial design. The study provided participants with 15 randomized scenarios with the same social context but different interacting partners and confirmed the degree of agreement with the negative interpretation presented in each situation.Results: The high social anxiety group showed more negative interpretation bias in ambiguous social situations compared to the low social anxiety group. Regarding the negative interpretation biases according to relational intimacy, the high social anxiety group showed the most negative interpretation bias in social interactions with a moderately intimate person than they did with a stranger or very intimate person.Conclusions: Social anxiety may have different effects on the degree of negative interpretation bias depending on intimacy in social interactions, suggesting that differentiated therapeutic interventions are needed.

Abstract:In March 2020, COVID-19 brought illness, lockdowns, and economic turmoil worldwide. Studies from March–April 2020 reported increased psychological distress, especially among younger (vs. older) adults. Here, we examine whether age differences persisted in a 29-wave longitudinal survey conducted with an American national life-span sample over the first 16 months of the pandemic. Socio-emotional selectivity theory (SST) predicts that older age will be consistently associated with lower psychological distress due to life-span changes in motivation, while the strength and vulnerability integration model (SAVI) posits that age differences in psychological distress will diminish under prolonged stress. We find that younger adults consistently reported more psychological distress than older adults, though age differences did decrease over time. Prior diagnosis with anxiety or depression additionally predicted greater psychological distress throughout the study, but did not moderate age differences. We discuss implications for psychological theories of aging and interventions to reduce psychological distress.

Abstract:Abstract Objective To examine the impact of potential measurement bias (i.e., differential item functioning [DIF]) across sex, age, employment, location, and substance use disorders on the screening properties of epidemiological surveys that utilise screening questions when estimating prevalence of mood and anxiety disorders. Methods Data comprised of 15,893 respondents who completed the 2020–2022 Australian National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing. Questions from the screening module of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview 3.0 were analysed using confirmatory factor analysis and DIF across subgroups of interest. Sensitivity, specificity, and classification rate were derived and compared across models that did and did not adjust for significant levels of DIF. Results Sources of DIF were identified across the items was due to age and sex at birth with relatively fewer items displaying DIF across employment, location, and substance use disorders. In terms of screening, the absolute differences in sensitivity and specificity between the DIF‐free and DIF models ranged from 0.001 to 0.091. Conclusions The current study found some evidence of DIF in the screening questions used to evaluate mental health disorder prevalence. However, the overall influence of DIF on screening into at least one mood and anxiety disorder module was found to be minimal.

Abstract:During adolescence, there is a notable surge in depressive symptoms, with negative interpretive bias (NIB) playing a crucial role, while interpersonal emotion regulation (IER) acts as a protective factor. However, adolescents exhibit significant variability in interpreting ambiguous information across social contexts. This study aimed to identify profiles of context-based NIB among adolescents across three contexts (parents-, teacher-, and peer-context) and explore their links with depressive symptoms and the role of IER. The key variables were assessed through experimental and questionnaire methods, utilizing data from a sample of 1832 adolescents (M = 14.54; SD = 1.93). The statistical analyses included latent profile analysis, Welch's ANOVA, Chi-square (chi 2) tests, and moderation modelling. Four distinct profiles were identified, namely "all contexts unbiased", "parentcontext biased", "teacher- and peer-contexts biased", and "all contexts biased". Membership in these profiles was significantly associated with depressive symptoms, with IER showing effectiveness in mitigating depressive symptoms among adolescents with NIB in specific contexts but not pervasive NIB. The findings highlight the importance of identifying context-based NIB in future prevention and early intervention strategies, while emphasizing the need to promote healthy social interactions among adolescents.

Abstract:Background: No consistent conclusion has been reached regarding the attentional bias characteristics of adolescents with major depressive disorders (MDD), and unexamined co-occurring anxiety distress may contribute to this inconsistency. Methods: We enrolled 50 MDD adolescents with anxiety distress, 47 MDD adolescents without anxiety distress and 48 healthy adolescents. We measured attentional bias using a point-probe paradigm during a negative-neutral emotional face task. Reaction time, correct response rate and attentional bias value were measured. Results: MDD adolescents did not show a negative attentional bias; MDD adolescents with anxiety distress exhibited longer reaction time for negative and neutral stimuli, lower correct response rate for negative stimuli. Hamilton Anxiety Scale scores were positively correlated with reaction time, negatively correlated with correct response rate, and not significantly correlated with attentional bias value. Limitations: The cross-sectional design hinders causal attribution, and positive emotional faces were not included in our paradigm. Conclusion: Negative attentional bias is not a stable cognitive trait in adolescents with MDD, and avoidance or difficulty in disengaging attention from negative emotional stimuli may be the attentional bias characteristic of MDD adolescents with anxiety distress.

Minority stress process among older Black Americans: the role of age, perceived discrimination, and anxiety

Abstract:Objective: Prolonged experiences of discrimination can be a major source of physical and health-related stress, particularly in older Black Americans. However, there is limited information on the relation between discrimination and anxiety, particularly within the context of other constructs that influence the manifestation of anxiety symptoms. For example, several studies have suggested that ethnic identification may provide psychological and social resources to deal with the effects of discrimination. This study aims to further understand these processes.Method: This study utilized structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine predictors of anxiety symptom severity in a sample of African American and Afro-Caribbean adults aged 55 and older from the National Survey of American Life (N = 1,032).Results: The final structural regression model revealed acceptable fit indices, and was successful in measuring latent anxiety symptom severity, showing that more experienced discrimination was related to higher anxiety and anxiety was directly related to mental health rating. While higher experience of discrimination was associated with higher anxiety, it was not directly related to mental health rating. However, contrary to expectation, ethnic identification did not serve as a protective factor between experienced discrimination and anxiety. As individuals aged, they experienced less discrimination and reported poorer self-rated mental health.Conclusions: While age served as a protective factor for perceived discrimination and anxiety symptom severity, ethnic identification did not. Implications for those working to reduce anxiety symptoms among Black Americans are discussed.
