Abstract:Disasters are traumatic events that are always incongruent with our existing cognitive structures. Immediate negative psychological impact and traumatic related psychiatric disorders are popular among survivals involving the disasters. Super-half of survivals involving the "5" 12" Wenchuan earthquake experienced the symptoms of anxiety or increased arousal. 12.59% of survivals were met with the ASD diagnosis. 21.29% of adults and 10.21% of adolescents were met with the PTSD diagnosis 5 months after the major earthquake. Immediately negative psychological impact and high prevalence of traumatic related psychiatric disorders among survivals were confirmed.More effort should be paid on the disaster related patients in emergency department with psychiatric issues. Also, the long-term psychological service is necessary for Sichuan Pest-Disaster Reconstruction Projects.
Well-Being and Perceived Quality of Life in Elderly People Displaced After the Earthquake in L’Aquila, Italy

Abstract:On 6 April 2009, the city of L’Aquila was hit by a violent earthquake that destroyed almost all of its medieval centre, and the surviving inhabitants were evacuated and relocated in temporary quarters or undamaged homes. The aim of this study was to investigate the perceived quality of life of the elderly population 3 years after the earthquake in relation to the social and logistic issues of new housing. The study was carried out between October 2011 and March 2012, and involved 571 subjects aged over 65 years living in the municipality of L’Aquila. The interviews took place in the surgeries of general practitioners and the city’s Department of Prevention and Vaccination in the anti-influenza immunisation period. The instrument used was a 36-item questionnaire with closed, multiple choice answers divided into the following sections: demographics, everyday activities, health and perceived health, and the quality of life in the city. The results show that, 3 years after the earthquake, the elderly population living in the new towns and temporary housing of L’Aquila have a worse perception of their quality of life than the others. They feel a certain social isolation and wish to live elsewhere. Governments faced with the problems arising from a natural calamity should take into account all of the elements making up a good quality of life and, before making choices whose impact cannot be changed, consider both their immediate and long-term social consequences.

Abstract:Objectives: to evaluate the health status' perception in relation to the displacement in the over-65-year population of L'Aquila, about three years after the earthquake of April 6th, 2009. Design: a cross-sectional observational study was performed using a structured interview with a questionnaire divided into 36 closed and multiple questions. Setting and participants: interviews were conducted in the offices of general practitioners and at the Department of prevention - vaccinations service. The respondents were 569 elderly, equally represented by gender; 57% was 65-74 years old, 25% was 75-79 years old, and 18% was more than 80 years old. Results: the study showed that the negative perception of health status is significantly associated with delocalization, female gender, more advanced age, low education, and living with a person not belonging to the family unit. Among people who perceive health in a negative way and live in temporary housing, the inability to perform daily activities, and therefore a lower degree of self-sufficiency, was detected more frequently. Even the presence of certain chronic degenerative diseases (even if self-reported) contributes to the negative perception. This is associated with a decrease in the ability to perform daily activities. Conclusions: the living conditions and the traditional determinants of old age negatively affect the perception of health status. Relocation and the absence of infrastructure change everyday life and affect judgment on one's health.

Abstract:Seasonal succession of attached algae in the North Alouette River over 1 year is described and analyzed in relation to physicochemical characteristics. An attempt is made to consider quantitatively both diatom and nondiatom species using a multivariate method, principal coordinates analysis (P-Co-A).Stream water was slightly acidic and nutrient poor, the order of dominance in anions being SO42− > SiO2 > Cl− > NO3− > PO43− and metals plus ammonium . P-Co-A of seasonal succession revealed a cyclic pattern with sequences of gradual and abrupt changes in species composition. Flow, temperature, Cl−, and SO42−, which fluctuated abruptly, were significantly correlated with most of the seasonal change in species summarized by P-Co-A. A smaller amount of the variation, which was more smoothly patterned, correlated with fluxes in dissolved cations. Experiencing local community resilience in action: Learning from post-disaster communities

Abstract:Although increasing attention has been given to the need to engage local communities and facilitate community resilience, discrepancies between theory and practice remain evident. Myths, misconceptions and mistakes persist in post-disaster emergency operations, and in the reconstruction and re-development efforts following disaster. The ‘command and control’ approach typically deployed by disaster management agencies results in an increasing dependency on external support and annihilates the potentialities of local communities. Learning lessons from post-disaster interventions is important in order to better understand how to orient development interventions, especially those addressed to the sustainable development of vulnerable areas, such as mountain and rural territories. We emphasise the importance of recognizing community resilience and the capacity of local communities to self-organise. We describe examples of community resilience in action as it occurred following the earthquake in the Province of L'Aquila in the Abruzzo region of central Italy on 6 April 2009. We discuss the aftershock economies and aftershock societies that developed in the extraordinary communities that emerged around rural villages in the mountain areas around L'Aquila. A multi-methods approach was used, primarily drawing on personal experiences of life in the autonomous locally-organised camps that were established in rural areas following the earthquake. We conclude that the persistence of various disaster myths and the failure to acknowledge community resilience undermine more effective, socially-sustainable, disaster management and rural development planning. Learning from the post-disaster communities that arose in the L'Aquila post-earthquake mountain territory, we argue that in post-disaster management and in rural development planning, there should be a greater awareness of the underlying community resilience, and we suggest that greater attention should be given to understanding, recognizing and strengthening the capacities of local communities and the resilient social processes they put into action in order to address the negative social and economic impacts they experience during crises.

Abstract:The clinical presentation of acute appendicitis and the idiopathic granulomatous variety are, as a rule, indistinguishable. Five patients with idiopathic granulomatous appendicitis, treated during past decade, had histological acute and chronic appendicitis abounding with granulomas. Investigations not disclosing a systemic or enteric granulomatous disease and the patients' long-term complete postoperative recovery support the diagnosis of idiopathic granulomatous appendicitis.

Abstract:Abstract Background The Ecuadorian earthquake in April 16th was the second strongest and deadliest in 2016 worldwide, with approximately one million people affected. In this paper, we analyzed the psychological impact and the relationship between mental health events and various earthquake-related stressors related to the earthquake, 9 months after the event. Methods We conducted an analytical cross-sectional study, applying an anonymous survey to 316 adolescents (13–19 years old) from Muisne, Ecuador. Suicidal tendency, depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress (PTSD) were evaluated via the Child PTSD Symptom Scale (CPSS), Spence Children’s Anxiety Scale , Okasha Suicidality Scale , and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and the adapted seven-questions earthquake-related stressors survey. Results We found a high prevalence of suicidal ideations and behavior, posttraumatic stress, depression and anxiety compared to international studies. Even though adolescents currently living in shelters had higher levels of anxiety, their suicidal tendency was significantly lower than those living in their own or their relatives’ home. Finally, the earthquake-related stressors were not associated with suicidality and mental health events, with the exception of economic damage suffered by the family. Conclusions High levels of depression, post-traumatic stress and anxiety among high-school students were found, especially among those who have suffered serious economic damage. The economic impact in their families and high unemployment rates among their parents seems to be related to lack of hope and favorable perspectives for their future, situation that might lead to lead to emotional disturbances and psychological disorders. Although prolonged homelessness experience in shelters may be a stressful occurrence, might also be related with spiritual growth among adolescents, and may work as a protective factor against suicidal ideations and attempts.

Abstract:In this research work, the human behaviour during strong seismic events is studied. This aspect is of paramount importance in emergency for being able to develop effective evacuation strategy and increasing the safety level of emergency response personnel and people operating critical facilities. In particular, the quantification of the evacuation and control ability to maintain their stable position of normal people has been initially assessed through shaking table tests. The experimental tests have been performed with the support of virtual reality by replicating indoor and outdoor environments. Vital parameters have been collected through sensors. This work involves at this stage two research groups in Italy and Chile with the aim of evaluating strategies and methods on this topic that is rather new in earthquake engineering. This is supposed to be the first step of further investigations on larger campaigns, and number of individuals as well, in order to achieve a comprehensive statistic.

Abstract:Natural disasters cause immense damage and disruption to the environment, human lives, and property, posing a threat to safety and well-being. These disasters annually affect individuals and communities, severely impacting mental health. Research indicates a significant link between catastrophic events and an increased risk of mental disorders, including anxiety, depression, substance use, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Individuals with chronic conditions, like cancer patients, are particularly vulnerable post-disaster due to disrupted healthcare services. The recent earthquake in Morocco highlighted the urgent need for continued care, especially for vulnerable populations living in poverty. Soleterre Foundation's interventions focus on supporting young cancer patients and their families, emphasizing psychological support following the earthquake. Effective disaster response needs coordinated efforts, clear roles, communication, and standardized healthcare procedures, especially for vulnerable groups like cancer patients. Education programs for patients and clinicians are vital for disaster preparedness. Communication challenges and lack of medical history further emphasize the need for well-defined disaster preparedness plans and continued care guidelines for cancer patients.

Abstract:Introduction: Natural disasters in the form of earthquakes, tsunamis, and liquefactions in Central Sulawesi in 2018 had several impacts on disaster survivors' psychology. These psychological problems have developed as an effect from serious injuries or loss of family members of the survivors. Psychological disorders, such as anxiety, depression, to Post traumatic stress disorder, can affect long-term quality of life. This study aims to explore the psychological impacts experienced by survivors of the earthquake, tsunami, and liquefaction in Central Sulawesi. Method: A qualitative study with a phenomenological approach. In-depth interviews were conducted using semi-structured guideline, observation and voice recording of 18 survivors of the earthquake, tsunami, and liquefaction disasters. The determination of the sample is using a purposive sampling technique based on inclusion criteria. The results of the interviews were transcribed, member checking, and analyzed using the Van Mannen method. Results: This study produced four themes and fifteen sub-themes. The research themes consist of the grieving phase, post-traumatic stress disorder, social support and health services support. Conclusions: Further screening of disaster survivors who experienced psychological disorders is needed, not only as a preventive measure but also as a psychological support to improve their quality of life.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The effect of natural disasters internationally is linked to intensity and duration and the impact of these events for tertiary level professional students is not clearly understood. Following a 7.1 magnitude earthquake in New Zealand in 2010 (with aftershocks lasting 27 months) a number of tertiary nursing students experienced significant disruption to their studies.AIM: To compare the psychological health, resilience and the impact on learning for three cohorts of students engaged in tertiary nursing education during this time.METHOD: A cross-sectional survey design and convenience sampling was used for three cohorts of learners. An online survey was completed (n = 290) and included: Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale; PTSD Checklist; Work and Social Adjustment Scale; Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale.RESULTS: Statistically significant differences were found across the psychometric scales with regard to relationship status. Whilst an increase in self-reported physical and mental health issues prior to and following the earthquakes were noted, mitigating factors were also identified.CONCLUSIONS: In order to support psychological health amongst nursing students, tertiary education systems need to plan for sustainable learning. The importance of facilitating future orientation within organisations is necessary to develop resilience amongst staff and students, which, in turn, will enable on-going education during significant disaster events.

Abstract:Natural disasters are and will continue to represent a great challenge in addressing mental health issues globally. The most devastating recent (earthquakes on 6th February 2023 in Turkey and Syria) caused death of more than 55,000 people, injury of about 100,000 people and loss of property, overall affecting millions of people. Moreover, in the last several years in Europe, they came in a form of double disasters (for example coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic) and pointed out the unpreparedness of the health (including mental health) sectors for the emergency situations. However, in going through these experiences, we also learnt some of the practices that proved effective – including the fast creation of collaborative networks on a larger scale that also allowed fast spread of good practices and practical organisation of help. As a practical example of it - verbalized by the mental health professionals from Turkey through the Council of National Psychiatric Associations of the European Psychiatric Association, we organized a webinar delivered by experienced clincians, trauma experts and experts with lived experince in the earthquake zones. However, structural -implementation of mental health policies that focus on prevention and improving crisis response in care delivery are important to support populations affected by natural disasters to prevent the trauma sequel. Arabic translation of Female Sexual Function Index and validation in an Egyptian population.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is a prevalent health problem that has been inadequately investigated in the Arab world. An Arabic assessment instrument for FSD is urgently needed. AIM To validate the Arabic version of the Female Sexual Function Index (ArFSFI). METHODS This is a cross-sectional study conducted between January and April 2010. Eight hundred and fifty-five women (16-60 years old) participated in the study. Validation was carried out on aspects of face, content, discriminant, and criterion (concurrent) validity. Construct validity was evaluated using principal component analysis. Reliability studies on test-retest and on internal consistency were conducted with Pearson correlation and Cronbach's alpha, respectively. The best cutoff point for the ArFSFI to differentiate cases and noncases was determined using a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Parameters of validity and reliability of the ArFSFI and its domains. RESULTS ArFSFI total score and scores of various domains showed high test-retest reliability (r from 0.92 to 0.98). ArFSFI domains showed high internal consistency (α from 0.85 to 0.94). Six hundred and forty-four women (75.32%) met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition, criteria for diagnosis of sexual dysfunction while 211 women (24.68%) showed normal function. The ArFSFI was found to have good discriminant validity. There were significant differences between the mean scores of women with sexual dysfunction and those of women without sexual dysfunction. A total score of 28.1 was taken as the cutoff point for the ArFSFI to distinguish between women with FSD and women with normal function (sensitivity 96.7%, specificity 93.2%). The ArFSFI showed an excellent overall performance (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.985, 95% confidence interval 0.978-0.992). CONCLUSION The ArFSFI is a validated, reliable, and locally accepted tool for use in the assessment of FSD in the Egyptian population.
Mental health of nursing students regarding the Moroccan earthquake: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:Objective: In addition to the economic and social impact, mental health issues are one of health needs during natural disaster such as earthquake. Thus, surveillance for mental health variables is crucial for public health planning. Nursing students as professional students may be particularly vulnerable to adverse mental health effects after an earthquake because of their potential role in emergency response and the challenges associated with providing medical care in crisis conditions. The aim of this research was to assess the mental health of students after six months of the Moroccan earthquake and associated factors. Method: A cross-sectional survey of student nurses was conducted on March 2024; six months after the Moroccan earthquake in front to 261 students using class sampling method. Three validated psychometric measures, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PCL-C), Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21), and The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) were used to assess the nursing student mental health after Moroccan earthquake. Results: Anxiety, Depression, Stress and abnormal post-traumatic stress rank was present respectively in 44.8%, 37.1%, 7.7%, 61.3% of participants. However, a minority of students obtained the high resilience score (13.8%). The results showed that the DAS scale correlated negatively with age (p = 0.034). Furthermore, the female gender, 3rd grade students (as final year for the nursing diploma) and those who had lost a family member in the natural disaster obtained higher medians with a significant difference in the DAS scale score (p < 0.05). The post-traumatic stress scale was only affected by material damage (p = 0.044). However, the high level of scores resilience obtained significantly for students living with their families. In contrast, no association between the mental health of nursing students and attending the phenomenon or living near earthquake foci. Conclusion: This study has demonstrated the crucial need to train healthcare providers in emotion management in the event of a natural disaster, and to launch a priori initiatives, particularly with regard to the mental health of students in health universities, in order to prepare them psychologically for any intervention in the case of an alert.

Abstract:The experience of the 2016 earthquake in central Italy shows that the approach to the post-seismic phase is still based on an emergency approach, while the prevention and the reduction of seismic risk are proving difficult. In the particular context of rural and mountainous area, the seismic shock produced the depopulation of several minor historical centres and the scattering of urban communities. This kind of damage had dramatic impacts on the possibility of both preservation and restoration of traditional architectures, due to the specificity of the peculiar material used and construction techniques. In order to reverse the trend, the goal of future interventions must be to provide a reconstruction strategy, with the aim of defining the problems to be solved as a priority in the post-seismic phase and, at the same time, to provide risk prevention measures also within ordinary planning. The starting point of the current research is the impact of the earthquake on the historical centre of Caldarola to evaluate the damage state through three types of analyses: at the urban scale to identify the performance deficits that caused the loss of functionality of the whole urban system; at the building scale, through an expeditious assessment method to identify the vulnerability of the building façade in relation to the usability of the emergency routes; in addition, the vulnerability of the building aggregates have been examined to verify the correspondence between the real damage occurred post-earthquake. The analysis results highlight a strong link between the development of an empirical vulnerability assessment and the more effective strategies of damage mitigation.
The feasibility of a psychological first aid intervention as a supportive tactic for feelings of psychological distress and mental health recovery outcomes among earthquake survivors in Northern Syria

Abstract:Aim This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of implementing a psychological first aid intervention for psychological distress, resilience capacity, quality and meaning of life among survivors affected by earthquake adversity in Northern Syria. Methods A quasi‐experimental, pre‐posttest, two‐group research design was utilized. A convenience sample of 95 survivors (46 in the study group and 49 in the control group) was recruited for the psychological First Aid intervention at a 1:1 ratio. The psychological first aid intervention was delivered in 10 sessions, twice weekly, followed by 3‐month follow‐up. Results A statistically significant improvement in the mean scores of resilience capacity, quality and meaning of life among survivors, along with a significant reduction in psychological distress, was registered among the study group compared with the control group. Conclusion Our work verified the suitability of implementing psychological first aid following the catastrophic temblors which struck Northern Syria. Given that the psychological first aid intervention is grounded in psychological safety, cognitive reframing, mobilization of social support and installation of hope, the feasibility of its path following public health emergency, traumatic events or even a personal crisis can be favourable.

Abstract:We are members of Students' Education, Empowerment and Development in Mental Health, a group of medical students and psychiatrists from around the globe under the Psychiatry, Medicine and Primary Care Section of the World Psychiatric Association. In this article, we put forward recommendations to help improve the mental health response in disaster-prone regions such as Türkiye. We recommend a three-step multi-tiered mental health response system that could significantly help to address the immediate, short-term and long-term mental health needs of communities directly affected by a disaster. The recommendation draws from the relevant literature and, most importantly, from our lived experiences of living in earthquake-prone countries.

Abstract:Natural and man-made disasters carry with them major burden and very often the focus is on immediate survival and management of resulting infectious diseases. The impact of disasters directly and indirectly on the well-being and mental health of those affected often gets ignored. The reasons are often stigma and lack of attention to mental health consequences. In addition, often the focus is on preventing the spread of infectious diseases such as waterborne or airborne diseases. This is further complicated by the fact that often aid agencies in offering aid tend to focus on communicable diseases and not on mental health of populations. This focus may reflect easily to measure outcomes in comparison with mental illnesses as the global burden of disease is likely to increase in the next few decades. There is an urgent need to apply the principles of social justice on social and health care policies, which will lead to elimination of stigma. In this article, we propose that the impact of mental illness as a result of disasters needs to be taken seriously in any planning and delivery of relief. Mental health is likely to be affected both directly and indirectly as a result of disasters and also likely to be influenced by ongoing factors such as poor housing, overcrowding and other social determinants. In addition to deliver equity between physical and mental illnesses, appropriate and adequate resources are needed so that identifiable needs can be met with clear outcomes.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To explore the mental health status of residents scattered living in Anxian after Wenchuan earthquake so as to provide scientific basis for further mental health intervention.METHODS:A face to face interview was conducted among the scattered residents with designed questionnaire, which had three parts of the physical and emotional reaction, the relax methods and the social care and supports expected. Two-stage probability proportional to size (PPS) sample method was performed to sample 2184 from 0.44 million scattered residents in Anxian. On the basis of statistical description, mental health of different characteristics groups was compared.RESULTS:Three main symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorders in 2184 residents (11.23+/-3.44) were higher than the 103 fire victims in Hunan in 2003 (10.06+/-3.26), three factor scores of SCL-90 (5.76+/-1.74) were higher than normal in 1998 repair mode (n=23 891) (4.72+/-1.44), and the statistical difference was observed (t=10.77, P<0.05; t=706.04, P<0.05). Comparing the mental health of different groups, some significant differences were found by age, gender and education background.CONCLUSION:The earthquake disaster brought prevalent physical and emotional reaction. Elderly people, female, junior students need mental intervention immediately. Therefore, strengthen the mental education and assistance (especially in high risk groups) would be of more significance.
