Abstract:Maritime emissions play an important role in anthropogenic emissions, particularly for cities with busy ports such as Hong Kong. Ship emissions are strongly dependent on vessel speed, and thus accurate vessel speed is essential for maritime emission studies. In this study, we determined minute-by-minute high-resolution speed profiles of container ships on four major routes in Hong Kong waters using Automatic Identification System (AIS). The activity-based ship emissions of NO(x), CO, HC, CO(2), SO(2), and PM(10) were estimated using derived vessel speed profiles, and results were compared with those using the speed limits of control zones. Estimation using speed limits resulted in up to twofold overestimation of ship emissions. Compared with emissions estimated using the speed limits of control zones, emissions estimated using vessel speed profiles could provide results with up to 88% higher accuracy. Uncertainty analysis and sensitivity analysis of the model demonstrated the significance of improvement of vessel speed resolution. From spatial analysis, it is revealed that SO(2) and PM(10) emissions during maneuvering within 1 nautical mile from port were the highest. They contributed 7%-22% of SO(2) emissions and 8%-17% of PM(10) emissions of the entire voyage in Hong Kong.

Abstract:We developed an air pollutant emission inventory for marine vessels in the Shanghai Port in 2003. We estimated emissions under cruising and maneuvering conditions based on two categories of vessels: (1) vessels in the Outer Port, which enter the area following notification of the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration, a division of the Ministry of Communications of P.R. China; and (2) vessels in internal waterways, which enter those waters following notification of the local Port Administration Centers. Vessels in the Outer Port consist of three subcategories: (1) international vessels that are engaged in foreign commerce; (2) domestic vessels traveling along the downstream portion of the Huangpu River; and (3) domestic vessels traveling along the coast. We also estimate emissions from vessels over 1000 DWT operating under hotelling conditions in the Outer Port. In 2003, the total number of calls was approximately 1.3 million, of which 57% is attributed to vessels in internal waterways and 43% to vessels in the Outer Port. Total marine emissions for NOx, SO2, PM, HC, and CO2 in 2003 are estimated to be 58,160, 51,180, 6960, 4560, and 3,012,800 tons, respectively. Emissions are allocated to 1 km x 1 km grid cells for the 129 km x 102 km Shanghai Port study domain.

Abstract:Ships are considered important contributors to air pollution and have seriously health impact globally. Although many researchers have carried out studies on emission factors (EFs) in recent years, studies covering various types of ships are rare and the chemical characteristics of particulate matter (PM) emitted by them are unclear. Due to the diversity of different national fleets, the current emission inventory in China established by citing foreign EFs will lead to inaccurate calculation results and generate large uncertainty. In this study, the EFs for ocean-going, harbour, offshore and inland vessels were measured by the portable emission measurement system (PEMS). The specific compositions of PM were analyzed, including carbonaceous components, water-soluble ions (WSI), elements, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Combined with localized EFs, the ship emission inventory of Qingdao Port was established based on Automatic Identification System (AIS) data. The results show nitrogen oxide (NOx) is the primary pollutant discharged by all ships, followed by sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ). The emissions of SO 2 and PM from inland and offshore vessels fueled with high sulfur fuel (HSF) are significantly higher than other ships. Carbonaceous components accounted for 43.4%–53.9% of the total mass of PM, WSI accounted for 9.8%–14.3%, and elements accounted for 16.5%–28.6%. Although the use of low sulfur fuel (LSF) has reduced the emission of V and Ni from ships, it could still be treated as tracer elements of ship emissions. The annual emissions of SO 2 , NO X , PM 2.5 , THC and CO from ships in Qingdao port in 2020 were 9728.5, 38503.9, 1424.9, 1331.5 and 2440.4 tons, respectively. The ship emission inventory established based on EPA-recommended EFs resulted in underestimating approximately 16.8% of ship pollutants, especially for SO 2 and PM. Ocean-going ships and offshore vessels are major emitters in the study waters. This study is hoped to provide a valuable reference for the further regulation and policy formulation of ship emissions in China.

National- to Port-Level Inventories of Shipping Emissions in China

Abstract:Shipping in China plays a global role, and has led worldwide maritime transportation for the last decade. However, without taking national or local port boundaries into account, it is impossible to determine the responsibility that each local authority has on emission controls, nor compare them with land-based emissions to determine the priority for controlling these emissions. In this study, we provide national-to port-level inventories for China. The results show that in 2013, the total emissions of CO, non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs), nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM), SO2 and CO2 were 0.0741 +/- 0.0004 Tg.yr(-1), 0.0691 +/- 0.0004 Tg.yr(-1), 1.91 +/- 0.01 Tg.yr(-1), 0.164 +/- 0.001 Tg.yr(-1), 1.30 +/- 0.01 Tg.yr(-1) and 86.3 +/- 0.3 Tg.yr(-1) in China, respectively. By providing high-resolution spatial distribution maps of these emissions, we identify three hotspots, centered on the Bohai Rim Area, the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta. These three hotspots account for 8% of the ocean area evaluated in this study, but contribute around 37% of total shipping emissions. Compared with on-road mobile source emissions, NOx and PM emissions from ships are equivalent to about 34% and 29% of the total mobile vehicle emissions in China. Moreover, this study provides detailed emission inventories for 24 ports in the country, which also greatly contributes to our understanding of global shipping emissions, given that eight of these ports rank within the top twenty of the port league table. Several ports in China suffer emissions 12-147 times higher than those at Los Angeles port. The ports of Ningbo-Zhou Shan, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Dalian dominate the port-level inventories, with individual emissions accounting for 28%-31%, 10%-14%, 10%-12% and 8%-14% of total emissions, respectively.

Abstract:In recent years, ship exhaust gases have become an essential source of air pollution. A detailed study of ship exhaust emissions can accurately reflect air pollution intensity in ports with high waterborne traffic. In this paper, ship exhaust emissions in 2018 in the west area of Shenzhen port are estimated based on ship AIS data and fitting results between ship characteristics, including ship length, engines' power, gross tonnage, and maximum speed. This research reveals the emission distributions according to different ship types, months, and operation conditions. The results showed that the contribution rate of exhaust emissions of cargo ships and container ships is at the forefront, In contrast, ship emissions in hotelling and normal cruising are more significant than those in maneuvering and slow steaming conditions. The results presented in this research provide a basis for developing emission reduction measures in port area management and provide relevant experience to other world port areas.

Gaseous Emissions from a Seagoing Ship under Different Operating Conditions in the Coastal Region of China

Abstract:Pollution caused by ship emissions has drawn attention from various countries. Because of the high density of ships in ports, channels, and anchorages and their proximity to the densely populated areas, ship emissions will considerably impact these areas. Herein, a Chinese seagoing ship is selected and a platform is established for monitoring the ship emissions to obtain detailed characteristics of the ship’s nearshore emissions. The ship navigation and pollution emission data are obtained under six complete operating conditions, i.e., berthing, manoeuvring in port, acceleration in a channel, cruising, deceleration before anchoring, and anchoring. This study analyzes the concentrations of the main emission gases (O2, NOX, SO2, CO2, and CO) and the average emission factors (EFs) of the pollution gases (NOX, SO2, CO2, and CO) based on the engine power under different operating conditions. Results show that the change in O2 concentration reflects the load associated with the main engine of the ship. The NOX, SO2, and CO2 emission concentrations are the highest during cruising, whereas the peak CO emission concentration is observed during anchoring. The average EFs of NOX and SO2 based on the power of the main engine are the highest during cruising, and those of CO2 and CO are the highest after anchoring. The ship EFs are different during acceleration and deceleration. By comparing the EFs along the coast of China and the global EFs commonly used to perform the emission inventory calculations in China, the NOX EFs under different operating conditions is observed to be generally lower than the global EFs under the corresponding operating conditions. Furthermore, the SO2 EF is considerably affected by the sulfur content in the fuel oil and the operating conditions of the ship. The average CO2 EFs are higher than the global EFs commonly used during cruising, and the CO EFs are higher than the global EFs under all the conditions. Our results help to supplement the EFs for this type of ship under different operating conditions, resolve the lack of emission data under anchoring conditions, and provide data support to conduct nearshore environmental monitoring and assessment.

Emission Factors for Gaseous and Particulate Pollutants from Offshore Diesel Engine Vessels in China

Abstract:Shipping emissions have significant influence on atmospheric environment as well as human health, especially in coastal areas and the harbour districts. However, the contribution of shipping emissions on the environment in China still need to be clarified especially based on measurement data, with the large number ownership of vessels and the rapid developments of ports, international trade and shipbuilding industry. Pollutants in the gaseous phase (carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, total volatile organic compounds) and particle phase (particulate matter, organic carbon, elemental carbon, sulfates, nitrate, ammonia, metals) in the exhaust from three different diesel-engine-powered offshore vessels in China (350, 600 and 1600 kW) were measured in this study. Concentrations, fuel-based and power-based emission factors for various operating modes as well as the impact of engine speed on emissions were determined. Observed concentrations and emission factors for carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, total volatile organic compounds, and particulate matter were higher for the low-engine-power vessel (HH) than for the two higher-engine-power vessels (XYH and DFH); for instance, HH had NOx EF (emission factor) of 25.8 g kWh−1 compared to 7.14 and 6.97 g kWh−1 of DFH, and XYH, and PM EF of 2.09 g kWh−1 compared to 0.14 and 0.04 g kWh−1 of DFH, and XYH. Average emission factors for all pollutants except sulfur dioxide in the low-engine-power engineering vessel (HH) were significantly higher than that of the previous studies (such as 30.2 g kg−1 fuel of CO EF compared to 2.17 to 19.5 g kg−1 fuel in previous studies, 115 g kg−1 fuel of NOx EF compared to 22.3 to 87 g kg−1 fuel in previous studies and 9.40 g kg−1 fuel of PM EF compared to 1.2 to 7.6 g kg−1 fuel in previous studies), while for the two higher-engine-power vessels (DFH and XYH), most of the average emission factors for pollutants were comparable to the results of the previous studies, engine type was one of the most important influence factors for the differences. Emission factors for all three vessels were significantly different during different operating modes. Organic carbon and elemental carbon were the main components of particulate matter, while water-soluble ions and elements were present in trace amounts. The test inland ships and some test offshore vessels in China always had higher EFs for CO, NOx, and PM than previous studies. Besides, due to the significant influence of engine type on shipping emissions and that no accurate local EFs could be used in inventory calculation, much more measurement data for different vessels in China are still in urgent need. Best-fit engine speeds during actual operation should be based on both emission factors and economic costs.

Abstract:The designation of ship emission control areas in China evidenced increased attention to ship emissions. Ships calling ports along inland waterways are of particular concern as their emissions exacerbate air pollution in nearby cities. Adapting the Ship Traffic Emission Assessment Model to the local context, this study combines data from Automatic Identification System, vessel profile database, and field investigation results to build a “bottom-up” activity-based inventory of ship emissions. The Nanjing Longtan Container Port was taken as a case study. Results show that total ship emissions for PM 10 , PM 2.5 , NO x , SO x , CO, HC, and CO 2 in 2014 are 3.45, 2.76, 196.00, 2.90, 20.62, 8.13, and 12,554.29 t, respectively. Accordingly, ship emission reduction measures were proposed based on the analysis of emission characteristics. The methods and conclusions of the study provide a scientific basis for the inventory and control of the ship emissions in China.

Abstract:The Yangtze River Delta (YRD) port cluster is one of five major port clusters in China and is home to Shanghai port, the largest port worldwide. In this study, an automatic identification system-based model was built to estimate the ship exhaust emissions in the YRD and the East China Sea within 400 km of the coastline. In 2010, the total emissions of SO2, NOX, and PM2.5 were 3.8 × 10(5) tonnes/yr, 7.1 × 10(5) tonnes/yr, and 5.1 × 10(4) tonnes/yr, respectively. More than 60% and 85% of the ship emissions occurred within 100 km and 200 km of the coastline, respectively. Ship emissions also showed distinct seasonal variability. The emission of SO2 and NOX by ships in hot spots, such as ports and vessel traffic hubs was much higher than that on land, with maximum SO2 and NOX intensities from ships that were 36 times and 17 times greater, respectively, than the maximal land-based emissions. The potential impact of ship emissions at six hot spots on the surrounding atmospheric environment was estimated with the HYSPLIT model. Our study demonstrated that ship emissions have an important impact on both the entire YRD region and on greater East China.

Abstract:Growing shipping activities in port areas have generated negative impacts on climate, air quality and human health. To better evaluate the environmental impact of ship emissions, an experimental characterization of air pollution from ships was conducted in Shanghai Port in the summer of 2016. The ambient concentrations of gaseous NO, NO2, SO2 and O3 in addition to fine particulate matter concentrations (PM2.5), particle size distributions and the chemical composition of individual particles from ship emission were continuously monitored for 3 months. Ship emission plumes were visible at the port site in terms of clear peaks in the gaseous species and particulate matter concentrations. The SO2 and vanadium particle numbers were found to correlate best with ship emissions in Shanghai Port. Single-particle data showed that ship emission particles at the port site mainly concentrated in a smaller size range (< 0.4 mu m), where their number contributions were more important than their mass contributions to ambient particulate matter. The composition of ship emission particles at the port site suggested that they were mostly freshly emitted particles: their mass spectra were dominated by peaks of sulfate, elemental carbon (EC), and trace metals such as V, Ni, Fe and Ca, in addition to displaying very low nitrate signals. The gaseous NOx composition in some cases of plumes showed evidence of atmospheric transformation by ambient O-3, which subsequently resulted in O-3 depletion in the area. Quantitative estimations in this study showed that ship emissions contributed 36.4 % to SO2, 0.7 % to NO, 5.1 % to NO2, -0.9 % to O-3, 5.9 % to PM2.5 and 49.5 % to vanadium particles in the port region if land- based emissions were included, and 57.2 % to SO2, 71.9 % to NO, 30.4 % to NO2, -16.6 % to O-3, 27.6 % to PM2.5 and 77.0 % to vanadium particles if land-based emissions were excluded.

Abstract:China has >400 ports, is home to 7 of 10 biggest ports in the world and its waterway infrastructure construction has been accelerating over the past years. But the increasing number of ports and ships means increasing emissions, and in turn, increasing impact on local and regional air pollution. This paper presents an overview of the broad field of ship emissions in China and their atmospheric impacts, including topics of ship engine emissions and control, ship emission factors and their measurements, developing of ship emission inventories, shipping and port emissions of the main shipping areas in China, and quantitative contribution of shipping emissions to the local and regional air pollution. There have been an increasing number of studies published on all the above aspects, yet, this review identified some critical research gaps, filling of which is necessary for better control of ship emissions, and for lowering their impacts. In particular, there are very few studies on inland ports and river ships, and there are few national scale ship emission inventories available for China. While advanced method to estimate ship emission based on ship AIS activities makes it now possible to develop high spatial- and temporal-resolution emission inventories, the ship emission factors used in Chinese studies have been based mainly on foreign measurements. Further, the contribution of ship emissions to air pollution in coastal cities, the dispersion of pollution plumes emitted by ships, or the chemical evolution process along the transmission path, have so far not been systematically studied in China.

Abstract:Marine shipping emissions exert important air quality and climate impacts. This study characterized the ambient pollutants predominant by emissions from a variety of marine vessel types near the mid-latitude East China Sea. Two discernible primary shipping emissions were identified by factorization analysis on detailed mass spectra of organic aerosol (OA), as emissions in maneuvering and cruise, highly linked with NOx (and less oxidized OA, black carbon, BC) or CO (and more oxidized OA), respectively. Using radio-recorded quantities and activities of 3566 vessels mixed with slow and high-speed diesel engines, we found emission of NOx or BC per vessel was positively correlated with vessel speed, while CO emission peaked at moderate speed. The approach here based on vessel operation mode directly linked the vessel activities to ambient concentrations of pollutants from marine shipping emission, and may synthesize the complex vessel types in shipping emission inventory.

Large throughput capacity and busy shipping traffics of Shanghai port make it an ideal place to characterize shipping emissions. Gaseous (NO, NO2, SO2, O3) and particulate concentrations (PM2.5), particle sizes and chemical composition of individual shipping emission particles were continuously monitored for 3 months. High temporal resolution data show that shipping emissions is a major culprit of local air pollution problems. Distinct shipping emission plumes were observed using online measurement in port area. The SO2 and Vanadium particles numbers were found to correlate best with shipping emissions in Shanghai port. Single particle mass spectra of fresh shipping emission were identified based on the dominant peaks of Sulfate, EC and indicative metals of V, Ni, Fe and Ca, and nitrate peaks in aged particles. Fresh shipping emission particles mainly concentrated in ultra-fine size range where their number contributions are more apparent than their mass. For the coastal port it is found appropriate to separate shipping emissions from land-based emissions by prevalent wind directions. Advanced measurement conducted in the present study show that in port region shipping emissions contributed 36.4 % SO2, 0.7 % NO, 5.1 % NO2, −0.9 % O3, 5.9 % PM2.5, 49.5 % Vanadium particles if land-based emissions were included, and 57.2 % SO2, 71.9 % NO, 30.4 % NO2, −16.6 % O3, 27.6 % PM2.5, 77.0 % Vanadium particles if land-based emissions were excluded.

Abstract:This study investigates AIS data from March 2019 to February 2020 in Shanghai Port waters. The ship activities of berthing, waiting, and ingress/egress are extracted in detail to elucidate the emission characteristics of ships in Shanghai Port, differentiating emissions patterns across various ship activity. The findings reveal that the top three pollutants within Shanghai Port are CO 2 , NO X , and SO 2 . Container ships have the highest emissions, followed by bulk carriers. Berthed container ships and oil tankers exhibit the highest emission. Waiting container ships emit the most, followed by oil tankers and bulk carriers. Among ships entering and leaving the port, low-speed navigation produces the most emissions, followed by maneuvering and steady-speed navigation. Emission hotspots include the Yangtze River Estuary Anchorage and the main navigation channel into and out of the port. This study offers robust data support for an in-depth understanding and evaluation of ship emission characteristics in Shanghai Port.

Abstract:Ship pollution has become a hot global issue. This study established a basic information database of Tianjin Port ship emissions and used it to screen representative ship types and perform real-world ship measurements by a portable emission measurement system (PEMS), which generated localized emission factors. The results show that the localized emission factors are significantly higher than those recommended in recommended in Chinese guidelines, which will lead to lower calculation results of the previous inventory. A high temporal-spatial ship emission inventory for Tianjin Port was developed using a "bottom-up" method based on automatic identification system (AIS) data by combining localized emission factors. The total estimated ship emissions for SO2, NOX, PM10, PM2.5, THC and CO in 2018 were 1.453 × 104 t, 2.861 × 104 t, 2.04 × 103 t, 1.82 × 103 t, 1.13 × 103 t, and 2.21 × 103 t, respectively. NOX was the primary pollutant, accounting for 56.9%, followed by SO2 (28.9%). The use of low-sulfur fuel in the port area has significantly reduced the discharge of SO2 and primary particles. The main channel and anchorage are the areas with the highest emission intensity. The intermonth ship emissions varied according to the ship activity, lowest in February and highest in May. The contribution of cargo transportation vessels to various pollutant emissions is more than 60%. Main engines (MEs) were the largest source of emissions, followed by auxiliary engines (AEs). NOX and SOX from ships have the greatest impact on the air quality in the surrounding area, especially in summer and autumn, as analyzed by the atmospheric dispersion modeling system (ADMS) model. Our research will update localized emission factors and inventories and evaluate the impact of ship emissions on air quality.

Abstract:Abstract Ship emission impacts ambient air quality, especially in coastal regions, by emitting air pollutants such as fine particles, nitrogen oxides (NO x ), and sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), yet its contributions to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and ozone (O 3 ) are much less constrained with the challenge in distinguish ship emission from land diesel emission. In this study, we conducted a 1‐year online measurement of VOCs with a 1‐hr resolution at a coastal site in south China's Pearl River Delta region, which holds three of the world's top 10 container ports. The results revealed that C10–C12 n‐alkanes, as typical diesel‐related emission tracers, were significantly enhanced and strongly related to oceanic air masses. Receptor modeling revealed two diesel‐related sources of land diesel emission and ship emission, which could be differentiated based on their source profiles, seasonal trends and air mass back trajectories. Ship emissions contributed 6.4%, 5.0%, and 13.6% of total VOC mixing ratios, ozone formation potentials (OFPs), and secondary organic aerosol formation potentials (SOAFPs), while these percentages were 3.4%, 14.7%, and 15.9% for land diesel emission, respectively. In particular, in July, ship emissions could contribute 21.7%, 14.6%, and 31.2% of VOCs, OFPs, and SOAFPs, respectively. Our results highlight the important contribution of diesel‐related emission VOCs in forming O 3 and SOA in coastal regions, and ship emission is a non‐negligible source of VOCs, particularly after the strict control of land emission sources.

Abstract:Emissions from ships at berth play an important role regarding the exposure of high density human populations to atmospheric pollutants in port areas; however, these emissions are not well understood. In this study, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particle emissions from 20 container ships at berth were sampled and analyzed during the fuel switch period at Jingtang Port in Hebei Province, China. VOCs and particles were analyzed using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) and a single particle aerosol mass spectrometer (SPAMS), respectively. VOC analysis showed that alkanes and aromatics, especially benzene, toluene and heavier compounds e.g., n-heptane, n-octane and n-nonane, dominated the total identified species. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) yields and ozone (O3) forming potential were 0.017 ± 0.007 g SOA g−1 VOCs and 2.63 ± 0.37 g O3 g−1 VOCs, respectively. Both positive and negative ion mass spectra from individual ships were derived and the intensity of specific ions were quantified. Results showed that elemental carbon (35.74 %), elemental carbon–organic carbon mixtures (33.95 %) and Na-rich particles (21.12 %) were major classes, comprising 90.7 % of the particles observed. Particles from ship auxiliary engines were in the 0.2 to 2.5 µm size range, with a peak occurring at around 0.4 µm. The issue of using vanadium (V) as tracer element was examined, and it was found that V was not a proper tracer of ship emissions when using low sulfur content diesel oil. The average percentage of sulfate particles observed in shipping emissions before and after switching to marine diesel oil remained unchanged at 24 %. Under certain wind conditions, when berths were upwind of emission sources, the ratios before and after 1 January were 35 and 27 % respectively. The impact of atmospheric stability was discussed based on PM2.5 and primary pollutant (carbon monoxide) concentration. With a background of frequent haze episodes and complex mechanisms of particulate accumulation and secondary formation, the impact of atmospheric stability is believed to have been weak on the sulfate contribution from shipping emissions. The results from this study provide robust support for port area air quality assessment and source apportionment.

Abstract:On-board emissions measurements were performed on a Handysize-class bulk carrier operating under real-world conditions. Emission factors (EFs) were determined for criteria pollutants such as NOx, CO, total hydrocarbons (THC), and PM; PM composition, including organic and elemental carbon (OC and EC), inorganic species, and a variety of organic compounds and VOC species (including alkanes, alkenes, single-ring aromatics, and oxygenated VOCs) were also analyzed. To investigate the impacts of engine type, fuel, and operating conditions on emissions, measurements were conducted on one main and one auxiliary engines using low- and high-sulfur fuels (LSF and HSF) under actual operating conditions, including at-berth, maneuvering, and cruising at different engine loads. OC was the most abundant PM component (contributing 45–65%), followed by sulfate (2–15%) and EC (1–20%). Compounds with 3 or 4 aromatic rings, including phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, and benzo[b+k]fluoranthene, dominated the particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emitted from the ship, accounting for 69–89% of the total PAHs. Single-ring aromatics constituted 50–78% of the emitted VOCs and were dominated by toluene. In this study, switching from HSF (1.12% S) to LSF (0.38% S) reduced emitted PM by 12%, OC by 20%, sulfate by 71%, and particulate PAHs by 94%, but caused an increase in single-ring aromatics. The power-based EFs generally decreased with increasing engine loads. However, decreasing the ship engine load also reduced the vessel speed and, thus, decreased emissions over a given voyage distance. Herein, a Vessel Speed Reduction (VSR) from 11 to 8–9 knots decreased NOx and PM emissions by approximately 33% and 36%, respectively, and OC, EC, sulfate, and particulate PAHs in PM emissions by 34%, 83%, 29%, and 11%. These data can be used to minimize uncertainty in the emission factors used in ship emissions calculations.

Abstract:Pollutants emitted from ships have adverse effects on the atmospheric environment. In this study, the atmospheric impact of gaseous and particulate pollutants emitted in the exhaust of typical ships was estimated based on real-world measurements obtained under conditions of various engine speeds and fuel types. The results showed that PM2.5 emission factors (EFs) ranged between 0.38 +/- 0.01 and 1.05 +/- 0.04 g/kg fuel, and tended to increase with engine speed. The EFs of volatile organic compounds (VOCs; including 57 species), which varied between 63 +/- 4 and 156 +/- 6 mg/kg fuel at different engine speeds, were determined largely via the modified combustion efficiency. The ozone formation potential (OFP), dominated by alkanes and aromatics, was between 0.33 +/- 0.01 and 0.83 +/- 0.05 g O-3/kg fuel. Secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP), dominated primarily by aromatics, varied between 2.7 +/- 0.1 and 8.7 +/- 0.7 mg SOA/kg fuel. Switching from heavy fuel oil to diesel oil significantly reduced pollutant emissions with the exception of NOx. Reductions in the EFs of VOCs, PM2.5, and total suspended particles were 67%, 42%, and 66%, respectively. The average fuel-mass-based EFs of OFP and SOAFP from ship emissions were similar to 2.3- and similar to 2.6-fold greater than those exhausted from on-road diesel vehicles, respectively, indicating that ship emissions could be an important source for ground-level ozone and organic aerosol formation, particularly in coastal regions. The results suggest that emission abatement technologies should be applied to marine diesel engines and stringent regulations on VOC species, particularly aromatics, should be imposed to improve regional air quality.
