Abstract:The detailed description of organic aerosols surfaces in the atmosphere remains an open issue, which limits our ability to understand and predict environmental change. Important research questions concern the hydrophobic/hydrophilic character of fresh and aged aerosols and the related influence on water uptake in solid, liquid as well in intermediate state. Also, surface characterization remains big challenge but we find it reachable by conjunction of Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations and the environmental molecular beam (EMB) experimental method. A picture of the detailed molecular-level behavior of water molecules on organic surfaces is beginning to rise based on detailed experimental and theoretical studies; one example is a recent study that investigates water interactions with solid and liquid n-butanol near the melting point [1], another example focus on interaction of water with solid nopinone [2]. From the other side, in order to characterize surface properties during and before melting we employ MD simulations of n-butanol, nopinone and valeric acid. Nopinone (C 9 H 14 O) is a reaction product formed during oxidation of β-pinene and has been found in both the gas and particle phases of atmospheric aerosol. n-butanol (C 4 H 9 OH) is primary alcohol, naturally occurs scarcely and here serves as good representative for alcohols. In the same way valeric acid (CH 3 (CH 2 ) 3 COOH) serves as a good representative for a family of carboxylic acids. Valeric acid is, as n-butanol, straight-chain molecule. We show that a classical force field for organic material is able to model crystal and liquid structures. The surface properties near the melting point of the condensed phase are reported, and the hydrophobic and hydrophilic character of the surface layer is discussed. Overall surface melting dynamic is presented and quantified in the terms of structural and geometrical properties. Mixing of a methanol with the solid nopinone surface is examined and hereby presented.

Abstract:Cloud/aerosol water surfaces exert significant influence over atmospheric chemical processes. Atmospheric processes at the water surface are observed to follow mechanisms that are quite different from those in the gas phase. This Account summarizes our recent findings of new reaction pathways on the water surface. We have studied these surface reactions using Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics simulations. These studies provide useful information on the reaction time scale, the underlying mechanism of surface reactions, and the dynamic behavior of the product formed on the aqueous surface. According to these studies, the aerosol water surfaces confine the atmospheric species into a specific orientation depending on the hydrophilicity of atmospheric species or the hydrogen-bonding interactions between atmospheric species and interfacial water. As a result, atmospheric species are activated toward a particular reaction on the aerosol water surface. For example, the simplest Criegee intermediate (CH2OO) exhibits high reactivity toward the interfacial water and hydrogen sulfide, with the reaction times being a few picoseconds, 2-3 orders of magnitude faster than that in the gas phase. The presence of interfacial water molecules induces proton-transfer-based stepwise pathways for these reactions, which are not possible in the gas phase. The strong hydrophobicity of methyl substituents in larger Criegee intermediates (>C1), such as CH3CHOO and (CH3)2COO, blocks the formation of the necessary prereaction complexes for the Criegee-water reaction to occur at the water droplet surface, which lowers their proton-transfer ability and hampers the reaction. The aerosol water surface provides a solvent medium for acids (e.g., HNO3 and HCOOH) to participate in reactions via mechanisms that are different from those in the gas and bulk aqueous phases. For example, the anti-CH3CHOO-HNO3 reaction in the gas phase follows a direct reaction between anti-CH3CHOO and HNO3, whereas on a water surface, the HNO3-mediated stepwise hydration of anti-CH3CHOO is dominantly observed. The high surface/volume ratio of interfacial water molecules at the aerosol water surface can significantly lower the energy barriers for the proton transfer reactions in the atmosphere. Such catalysis by the aerosol water surface is shown to cause the barrier-less formation of ammonium bisulfate from hydrated NH3 and SO3 molecules rather than from the reaction of H2SO4 with NH3. Finally, an aerosol water droplet is a polar solvent, which would favorably interact with high polarity substrates. This can accelerate interconversion of different conformers (e.g., anti and syn) of atmospheric species, such as glyoxal, depending on their polarity. The results discussed here enable an improved understanding of atmospheric processes on the aerosol water surface.

Experimental and Theoretical Investigation of Contact-Angle Variation for Water–ethanol Mixture Droplets on a Low-Surface-energy Solid

Abstract:Consider a situation where a droplet is deposited on a solid surface. If the droplet volume decreases, the droplet exhibits complex behavior, such as hysteresis and size dependence of its contact angle. In this study, we perform experimental and theoretical studies of the wettability of water-ethanol droplets on a low-surface-energy solid. In the experiment, the droplet behavior is examined with decreasing volume as a result of microsyringe extraction or natural evaporation. In particular, we analytically model the adsorption of liquid molecules at the solid-liquid interface and the change in the surface energy density of the liquid during the volume-change process. These models are validated with experimental data. From the experimental results, the droplet behavior resulting from microsyringe extraction and natural evaporation differ considerably with increasing ethanol concentration. Our results suggest that the complex behavior of the droplets during the volume change is related to liquid molecules adsorbed at the solid-liquid interface and the change in the surface energy density of the liquid induced by the concentration change resulting from evaporation of the binary liquid mixture near the contact line. Abstract:Solvent plays an important role in the relative motion of nanoscopic bodies, and the study of such phenomena can help elucidate the mechanism of hydrophobic assembly, as well as the influence of solvent-mediated effects on in vivo motion in crowded cellular environments. Here we study important aspects of this problem within the framework of Brownian dynamics. We compute the free energy surface that the Brownian particles experience and their hydrodynamic interactions from molecular dynamics simulations in explicit solvent. We find that molecular scale effects dominate at short distances, thus giving rise to deviations from the predictions of continuum hydrodynamic theory. Drying phenomena, solvent layering, and fluctuations engender distinct signatures of the molecular scale. The rate of assembly in the diffusion-controlled limit is found to decrease from molecular scale hydrodynamic interactions, in opposition to the free energy driving force for hydrophobic assembly, and act to reinforce the influence of the free energy surface on the association of more hydrophilic bodies.
Unraveling the Surface Activity of Ethanol-Water Mixtures through Experiments and Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Abstract:Ethanol's complete miscibility in water makes it a widely used solvent in various applications, such as organic compound synthesis, paint manufacture, chromatography, and cosmetics preservation. Studies suggest that ethanol's concentration at interfaces can be higher than in the bulk due to its amphiphilic nature, especially at lower concentrations, making it a surface-active agent. Accordingly, ethanol plays a crucial role in controlling the emulsion stability, foam formation, heat transfer, and coating adhesion. However, the precise concentration ranges up to which ethanol's surface activity dominates its interfacial properties, and the underlying molecular mechanism is not fully understood in the literature. In this context, our foamability experiments, coupled with film stability experiments conducted via ethanol drop impact on varying concentration ethanol-water mixture pools, indicate that the surface-active nature of ethanol is observed up to a maximum of 10% molar ethanol concentration in water. We next employ all-atom molecular dynamics simulations to reveal that the surface tension and other interfacial properties are most significantly affected only up to the molar concentration in the range of 0-10% of ethanol in water. This observation is further supported by free energy analyses, indicating that the stabilization free energy of an ethanol molecule at the interface becomes comparable to that in the bulk region beyond this concentration range. The transition from surface-active to a behavior resembling a homogeneous solution occurs when the molar concentration of ethanol in water exceeds 10%. This transition is attributed to distinctive alterations in the number and strength of ethanol-water hydrogen bonds. These findings provide valuable insights into the interfacial molecular structure, which can be suitably exploited to modulate interfacial properties and dynamic behavior in a wide array of industrial and scientific applications.
Probing the Interfacial Structure of Aqueous Surfactants through Helium Atom Evaporation

Abstract:Dissolved helium atoms evaporate from liquids in super-Maxwellian speed distributions because their interactions are too weak to enforce full thermal equilibration at the surface as they are "squeezed" out of solution. The excess speeds of these He atoms reflect their final interactions with solvent and solute molecules at the surfaces of water and other liquids. We extend this observation by monitoring He atom evaporation from salty water solutions coated with surfactants. These surface-active molecules span neutral, anionic, and cationic amphiphiles: butanol, 3-methyl-1-butanol, pentanol, pentanoic acid, pentanoate, tetrabutylammonium, benzyltrimethylammonium, hexyltrimethylammonium, and dodecyltrimethylammonium, each characterized by surface tension measurements. The helium energy distributions, recorded in vacuum using a salty water microjet, reveal a sharp distinction between neutral and ionic surfactant films. Helium atoms evaporate through neutral surfactant monolayers in speed distributions that are similar to a pure hydrocarbon, reflecting the common alkyl chains of both. We speculate that the ionic surfactants distribute themselves more loosely and deeply through the top layers of the aqueous solution than do neutral surfactants, with gaps between the surfactants that may be filled with salty water. Abstract:Spreading of sessile water droplets on a solid graphite surface has been studied using atomistic molecular dynamics techniques. The system is in the partial wetting regime and a straightforward scheme is applied to extract the contact angle from the atomistic simulations. Even for droplets containing a thousand molecules, the calculated contact angle for water is 83°, which is close to the experimental macroscopic value. On addition of ethanol, the contact angle decreases to 30° and we approach complete wetting. Time-averaged structural analyses show that the ethanol molecules form a monolayer on top of the solid surface. A few Å above the solid surface, the ethanol molecules are preferentially located at the liquid/vapor interface rather than in the bulk of the droplet.

Visualizing partial solvation at the air–water interface

Abstract:Despite significant research, the mechanistic nuances of unusual reactivity at the air–water interface, especially in microdroplets, remain elusive. The likely contributors include electric fields and partial solvation at the interface. To reveal these intricacies, we measure the frequency shift of a well-defined azide vibrational probe at the air–water interface, while independently controlling the surface charge density by introducing surfactants. First, we establish the response of the probe in the bulk and demonstrate that it is sensitive to both electrostatics and hydrogen bonding. From interfacial spectroscopy we infer that the azide is neither fully hydrated nor in a completely aprotic dielectric environment; instead, it experiences an intermediate environment. In the presence of hydrogen bond-accepting sulphate surfactants, competition arises for interfacial water with the azide. However, the dominant influence stems from the electrostatic effect of their negative heads, resulting in a significant blue-shift. Conversely, for the positive ammonium surfactants, our data indicate a balanced interplay between electrostatics and hydrogen bonding, leading to a minimal shift in the probe. Our results demonstrate partial solvation at the interface and highlights that both hydrogen bonding and electrostatics may assist or oppose each other in polarizing a reactant, intermediate, or product at the interface, which is important for understanding and tuning interfacial reactivity.

Abstract:Salt solubility in organic solvents is of particular interest in industry, for example, for carbon capture and storage or utilization processes, battery technology, or biotechnology. Electrolyte thermodynamic models have been developed to reduce the experimental effort for the design of an electrolyte toward desired properties, for example, high solubility in an organic solvent. In this work, the solubility of nine salts (NaCl, KCl, CsCl, NaHCO3, KHCO3, CsHCO3, Na2CO3, K2CO3, and Cs2CO3) in the organic solvents methanol, ethanol, and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) was studied at temperatures between 288.15 and 348.15 K. These systems were chosen since the largest amount of experimental data points were available in order to ensure a broad set of data for high modeling accuracy. Experimental solubility data were collected from literature, and missing data were measured in this work by both ion-chromatography analysis and the all-gravimetric method. The thermodynamic solubility product K SP of the salts was determined at 298.15 K and 1 bar. These K SP values do NOT depend on the solvent; that is, once known, they can be used to predict the solubility in any solvent or solvent mixture. K SP requires that the solid form of the precipitating salt be the same in different organic solvents. Therefore, powder X-ray diffractometer measurements were carried out to investigate possible hydrate formation or solvate formation, and Karl Fischer measurements were used to validate the absence of water. The equation of state ePC-SAFT was applied to model salt solubility in organic solvents by accounting for concentration-dependent dielectric constants within Debye–Hückel theory and Born theory. The required K SP values of the salts were determined using experimental literature data on the salt solubility in water together with the corresponding mean ionic activity coefficients (MIACs) at saturation. The availability of K SP and the predicted MIACs allowed modeling of the salt solubility in organic solvents in excellent agreement with experimental data. Furthermore, solvent-specific analysis and ion-specific analysis revealed a non-intuitive behavior of salt solubility in the organic solvents. One example is that ion-specific effects of salt solubility in alcohols are not valid in other organic solvents such as NMP. Furthermore, in contrast to aqueous solutions, salt solubility in organic solvents does not depend linearly on the cation size. Thus, experimental rules of thumb cannot be applied, and the experimental effort to screen salt solubility in organic solvents can only be significantly reduced by theoretical approaches such as ePC-SAFT.

The influence of solvent on surface adsorption and desorption

Abstract:The adsorption and desorption of reactants and products from a solid surface is essential for achieving sustained surface chemical reactions. At a liquid-solid interface, these processes can involve the collective reorganization of interfacial solvent molecules in order to accommodate the adsorbing or desorbing species. Identifying the role of solvent in adsorption and desorption is important for advancing our understanding of surface chemical rates and mechanisms and for enabling the rational design and optimization of surface chemical systems. In this manuscript we use all-atom molecular dynamics simulation and transition path sampling to identify water's role in the desorption of CO from a Pt(100) surface in contact with liquid water. We demonstrate that the solvation of CO, as quantified by the water coordination number, is an essential component of the desorption reaction coordinate. We use meta dynamics to compute the desorption free energy surface and conclude based on its features that desorption proceeds via a two-step mechanism whereby the final detachment of CO from the surface is preceded by the formation of a nascent solvation shell.

Determination of Structure and Energetics for Gibbs Surface Adsorption Layers of Binary Liquid Mixture 2. Methanol + Water.

Abstract:Vapor/methanol and vapor/methanol-water mixture interfaces have been among the benchmark liquid interfaces under extensive experimental and theoretical investigation. In this report, we studied the orientation, structure and energetics of the vapor/methanol-water interface with newly developed techniques in sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG-VS). Different from the interpretations in previous SFG-VS studies for a more disordered interface at higher bulk methanol concentrations, we found that the methanol-water mixture interface is well ordered in the whole concentration region. We are able to do so because direct polarization null angle (PNA) measurement allowed us to accurately determine the CH3 orientation at the interface and to separate the orientational and interface density contributions to the SFG-VS signal. We found that the CH3 groups at the interface pointed out almost perpendicularly from the interface. We further found that this well-ordered vapor/methanol-water mixture interface has an antiparallel structure. With the double layer adsorption model (DAM) and Langmuir isotherm, the adsorption free energies for the first and second layer are obtained as -1.7 +/- 0.1 kcal/mol and 0.5 +/- 0.4 kcal/mol, respectively. Therefore, the second layer adsorption is slightly negative, and this means that replacement of the second layer water molecule with methanol molecule is energetically unfavorable. Comparing this interface with the vapor/acetone-water mixture interface reported previously, we are able to correlate the second layer adsorption free energy with the work of self-association using the pairwise self- and mutual interaction energies between the water and solute molecules. These results provided detailed microscopic structural evidences for understanding of liquid interfaces.

Abstract:Atmospheric amino acids constitute a large fraction of water-soluble organic nitrogen compounds in aerosol particles, and have been confirmed as effective cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) materials in laboratory experiments. We present a molecular dynamics (MD) study of six amino acids with different structures and chemical properties that are relevant to the remote marine atmospheric aerosol–cloud system, with the aim of investigating the detailed mechanism of their induced changes in surface activity and surface tension, which are important properties for cloud drop activation. Distributions and orientations of the amino acid molecules are studied; these l-amino acids are serine (SER), glycine (GLY), alanine (ALA), valine (VAL), methionine (MET) and phenylalanine (PHE) and are categorised as hydrophilic and amphiphilic according to their affinities to water. The results suggest that the presence of surface-concentrated amphiphilic amino acid molecules give rise to enhanced Lennard–Jones repulsion, which in turn results in decreased surface tension of a planar interface and an increased surface tension of the spherical interface of droplets with diameters below 10 nm. The observed surface tension perturbation for the different amino acids under study not only serves as benchmark for future studies of more complex systems, but also shows that amphiphilic amino acids are surface active. The MD simulations used in this study reproduce experimental results of surface tension measurements for planar interfaces and the method is therefore applicable for spherical interfaces of nano-size for which experimental measurements are not possible to conduct.
Can electric fields drive chemistry for an aqueous microdroplet?

Abstract:Abstract Reaction rates of common organic reactions have been reported to increase by one to six orders of magnitude in aqueous microdroplets compared to bulk solution, but the reasons for the rate acceleration are poorly understood. Using a coarse-grained electron model that describes structural organization and electron densities for water droplets without the expense of ab initio methods, we investigate the electric field distributions at the air-water interface to understand the origin of surface reactivity. We find that electric field alignments along free O–H bonds at the surface are ~16 MV/cm larger on average than that found for O–H bonds in the interior of the water droplet. Furthermore, electric field distributions can be an order of magnitude larger than the average due to non-linear coupling of intramolecular solvent polarization with intermolecular solvent modes which may contribute to even greater surface reactivity for weakening or breaking chemical bonds at the droplet surface.

Abstract:Atmospheric aerosols contain a variety of compounds, among them free amino acids and salt ions. The pH of the aerosol droplets depends on their origin and environment. Consequently, compounds like free amino acids found in the droplets will be at different charge states, since these states to a great extent depend on the surrounding pH condition. In droplets of marine origin, amino acids are believed to drive salt ions to the water surface and a pH-dependent amino acid surface propensity will, therefore, indirectly affect many processes in atmospheric chemistry and physics such as for instance cloud condensation. To understand the surface propensity of glycine, valine, and phenylalanine at acidic, neutral, and basic pH, we used molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate them at three different charge states in water. Their respective surface propensities were obtained by the means of a potential of mean force (PMF) in an umbrella sampling approach. Glycine was found to have no preference for the surface, while both valine and phenylalanine showed high propensities. Among the charge states of the surface-enriched ones, the cation, representing the amino acids at low pH, was found to have the highest affinity. Free energy decomposition revealed that the driving forces depend strongly on the nature of the amino acid and its charge state. In phenylalanine, the main factor was found to be a substantial entropy gain, likely related to the side chain, whereas in valine, hydrogen bonding to the functional groups leads to favorable energies and, in turn, affects the surface propensity. A significant gain in water–water enthalpy was seen for both valine and phenylalanine.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:We examine the effect of solvent on the charging mechanisms of a macromolecule in a droplet by using molecular dynamics simulations. The droplet contains excess charge that is carried by sodium ions. To investigate the principles of the charging mechanisms of a macromolecule in a droplet, we simulate aqueous and methanol droplets that contain a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) molecule. We find that the solvent plays a critical role in the charging mechanism and in the manner that the sodiated PEG emerges from a droplet. In the aqueous droplets, the sodiated PEG is released from the droplet while it is being charged at a droplet charge state below the Rayleigh limit. The charging of PEG occurs on the surface of the droplet. In contrast to the aqueous droplets, in the methanol droplet, the sodiated PEG resides in the interior of the droplet and it may become charged at any location in the droplet, interior or surface. The sodiated PEG emerges from the droplet by drying-out of the solvent. Even though these two mechanisms appear to be phenomenologically similar to the widely accepted ion-evaporation and charge-residue mechanisms, they have fundamental differences from those. An integral part of the mechanism that the macromolecular ions emerge from droplets is the droplet morphology. Droplet morphologies give rise to different solvation interactions between the solvent and the macromolecule. In the water-sodiated PEG system, we find the extrusion of the PEG morphology, while in methanol-sodiated droplet, we find the "pearl-on-the-necklace" morphology and the extrusion of the sodiated PEG in the last stage of the desolvation process. These findings provide insight into the mechanisms that macromolecules acquire their charge in droplets produced in electrospray ionization experiments.

Abstract:Organic monolayers at the surfaces of aqueous aerosols play an important role in determining the mass, heat transfer rate and surface reactivity of atmospheric aerosols. They can potentially contribute to the formation of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and are involved in a series of chemical reactions occurring in atmosphere. Recent studies even suggest that organic-coated interfaces could have played some role in prebiotic biochemistry and the origin of life. However, creating reproducible, well-characterized aqueous aerosol particles coated with organic films is an experimental challenge. This opens the opportunity for computer simulations and modeling of these complex structures. In this work, molecular dynamics simulation was used to probe the structure and the interfacial properties of the dicarboxylic acid coated aqueous aerosol. Low molecular weight dicarboxylic acids of various chain lengths and water solubility were chosen to coat a water droplet consisting of 2440 water molecules. For malonic acid coated aerosol, the surface acid molecules dissolved into the water core and formed an ordered structure due to the hydrophobic interactions. The acid and the water are separated inside the aerosol. For other nanoaerosols coated with low solubility acids, phase separation between water and acid molecules was observed on the surface of the particle. To study the water processing of the coated aerosols, the water vapor accommodation factors were calculated.

Abstract:Ethanol and water form an azeotropic mixture at an ethanol molecular percentage of ∼91% (∼96% by volume), which prohibits ethanol from being further purified via distillation. Aqueous solutions at different concentrations in ethanol have been studied both experimentally and theoretically. We performed cylindrical micro-jet photoelectron spectroscopy, excited by synchrotron radiation, 70 eV above C1s ionization threshold, providing optimal atomic-scale surface-probing. Large model systems have been employed to simulate, by molecular dynamics, slabs of the aqueous solutions and obtain an atomistic description of both bulk and surface regions. We show how the azeotropic behaviour results from an unexpected concentration-dependence of the surface composition. While ethanol strongly dominates the surface and water is almost completely depleted from the surface for most mixing ratios, the different intermolecular bonding patterns of the two components cause water to penetrate to the surface region at high ethanol concentrations. The addition of surface water increases its relative vapour pressure, giving rise to the azeotropic behaviour.

Abstract:Environmental molecular beam experiments are used to examine water interactions with liquid methanol films at temperatures from 170 K to 190 K. We find that water molecules with 0.32 eV incident kinetic energy are efficiently trapped by the liquid methanol. The scattering process is characterized by an efficient loss of energy to surface modes with a minor component of the incident beam that is inelastically scattered. Thermal desorption of water molecules has a well characterized Arrhenius form with an activation energy of 0.47{\pm}0.11 eV and pre-exponential factor of 4.6 {\times} 10^(15{\pm}3) s^(-1). We also observe a temperature dependent incorporation of incident water into the methanol layer. The implication for fundamental studies and environmental applications is that even an alcohol as simple as methanol can exhibit complex and temperature dependent surfactant behavior.
