Abstract:The Sauropoda were the largest terrestrial animals ever to have lived on this planet. As their nutritional requirements were so huge, their diet holds sway over the ecology of many Mesozoic herbivores. The diet of the sauropods is limited by their feeding envelope, which in turn is governed by the posture and flexibility of their elongate necks. Yet the exact nature of the flexibility and posture of the neck has been a contentious issue. Previous studies have utilised computer models of dry bone, mechanical principles or the flexibility of the necks of extant animals. However, the effect of the musculature of the neck has yet to be investigated. Through measurements of the flexibility of the ostrich neck after cumulative tissue removal, analyses of the muscle attachment sites of the ostrich and sauropods, and testing of the Osteological Neutral Pose model, this study attempts to rectify this situation. The ostrich neck was shown to have three sections of flexibility; a slightly flexible anterior section, a very flexible middle section and a stiff posterior section. The Osteological Neutral Pose did not show these sections, and was shown to potentially overestimate and underestimate flexibility. It was also found that the inter-vertebral space could account for varying estimates of flexibility, and that sauropods would have proportionally more muscle mass at the base of the neck in relation to the ostrich. Ultimately, it was shown that the tissues of the neck place the limits of flexibility, and that zygapophyseal overlap does not indicate the flexibility of the neck. Should the Osteological Neutral Pose affect sauropod flexibility estimates in the same manner as that of the ostrich (a general overestimate), then the sauropods would have a more limited feeding envelope than previously thought, allowing for greater niche partitioning between groups.

Abstract:Birds have extremely flexible necks, which help in their search for food. However, studies on the variation in bird cervical anatomy and its relationship with foraging are rare, despite the different habits presented between species. Here, we analyze the anatomy of the neck of aquatic birds and relate it to their foraging strategies. We dissected specimens representing four species of Charadriiformes, 11 species of Phaethoquornithes, and two specimens belonging to the outgroup Telluraves. We chose to emphasize Charadriiformes and Phaethoquornithes because they present several strategies that require cervical mobility and stability. We note that vertebral anatomy and dimensions vary, which affects the shape and size of the soft tissues attached throughout the neck. The synovial cartilage present in the articulatio intercorporalis represents an additional length in the neck, however, this is not longer than that observed in animals with intervertebral discs. Our analysis indicates that birds have a prevalence of dorsoventral movements in the middle of the neck and lateral and rotational movements near the base of the neck, while the region near the head presents a wide range of movement in all directions. Cervical ligaments and muscles throughout the neck provide stability in all segments, although the robustness of the soft tissues indicates that the most caudal portion of the neck is the most stable. The vertebral and soft tissue anatomy is consistent with the extensive mobility in pitching, yaw, and roll movements performed mainly by the head and first segment of the neck during the different foraging of the analyzed birds. Furthermore, the muscles closer to the skull are robust and allow the execution of a variety of habits to capture food in different species. The subsequent cervical segments present differences that explain their reduction in mobility, but they are equally stable.

Arthrological reconstructions of the pterosaur neck and their implications for the cervical position at rest

Abstract:The lack of any pterosaur living descendants creates gaps in the knowledge of the biology of this group, including its cervical biomechanics, which makes it difficult to understand their posture and life habits. To mitigate part of this issue, we reconstructed the cervical osteology and arthrology of three pterosaurs, allowing us to make inferences about the position of the neck of these animals at rest. We used scans of three-dimensionally preserved cervical series of Anhanguera piscator , Azhdarcho lancicollis and Rhamphorhynchus muensteri for the reconstructions, thus representing different lineages. For the recognition of ligaments, joint cartilages, and levels of overlapping of the zygapophyses, we applied the Extant Phylogenetic Bracket method, based on various extant birds and on Caiman latirostris . We inferred that pterosaur intervertebral joints were probably covered by a thin layer of synovial cartilage whose thickness varied along the neck, being thicker in the posterior region. Ignoring this cartilage can affect reconstructions. According to the vertebral angulation, their neck was slightly sinuous when in rest position. Our analyses also indicate that pterosaurs had segmented and supra-segmented articular cervical ligaments, which could confer stabilization, execute passive forces on the neck and store elastic energy.

Decoupling the skull and skeleton in a Cretaceous bird with unique appendicular morphologies

Abstract:The Cretaceous is a critical time interval that encompasses explosive diversifications of terrestrial vertebrates, particularly the period when the earliest-branching birds, after divergence from their theropod ancestors, evolved the characteristic avian Bauplan that led eventually to their global radiation. This early phylogenetic diversity is overwhelmed by the Ornithothoraces, consisting of the Enantiornithes and Ornithuromorpha, whose members evolved key derived features of crown birds. This disparity consequently circumscribes a large morphological gap between these derived clades and the oldest bird Archaeopteryx . The non-ornithothoracine pygostylians, with an intermediate phylogenetic position, are key to deciphering those evolutionary transformations, but progress in their study has been hampered by the limited diversity of known fossils. Here we report an Early Cetaceous non-ornithothoracine pygostylian, Cratonavis zhui gen. et sp. nov., that exhibits a unique combination of a non-avialan dinosaurian akinetic skull with an avialan post-cranial skeleton, revealing the key role of evolutionary mosaicism in early bird diversification. The unusually elongated scapular and metatarsal one preserved in Cratonavis highlights a breadth of skeletal plasticity, stemming from their distinct developmental modules and selection for possibly raptorial behaviour. Mapped changes in these two elements across theropod phylogeny demonstrate clade-specific evolutionary lability.

Abstract:This study offers new insights into the giant extinct bird Argentavis magnificens, revealing a brain structure that blends traits of scavengers and birds of prey. While its olfactory abilities resemble those of the Andean Condor, the advanced visual processing structures suggest Argentavis relied heavily on sight, possibly for kleptoparasitic behavior. Combined with evidence of a soaring flight style, the findings paint a picture of this bird as a formidable aerial hunter, dominating open landscapes with its massive wingspan. Teratornithidae is an extinct bird family, likely related to Cathartidae, known exclusively from the Americas. They were once thought to be scavengers, but recent theories suggest they were opportunistic or piscivorous birds capable of swallowing prey whole. The most notable species, Argentavis magnificens, had a wingspan of 6 to 8 m and weighed 70 to 80 kg. In order to infer paleobiological aspects of this bird, its endocast (as a proxy for brain morphology), reconstructed from computed tomography scans of the holotype skull, is here described and compared to that of other bird species of zoophagous feeding habits with different flight styles. The brain of Argentavis presents a general appearance similar to that of Cathartidae, being dorsoventrally flattened and anteroposteriorly elongated, with small optic lobes in relation to the total encephalic surface. The estimated volume of the bulbi olfactorii is very similar to that of the Andean Condor Vultur gryphus. The main difference observed with Cathartidae is the marked development of the eminentiae sagittales present in Argentavis (structures closely related to the perception of visual information), which are more similar to those of the Accipitriformes and Falconiformes analyzed. The results obtained here suggest that Argentavis was a scavenger or even maybe a kleptoparasitic bird, relying more on vision than on smell (similar to that observed in the Andean Condor). Furthermore, the inner ear and flocculi exhibit characteristics similar to birds without acrobatic flight, indicating that Argentavis had a soaring flight and inhabited open areas without much vegetation.

Abstract:We describe the nearly complete digital endocasts of the brain and bony labyrinth of the neotype specimen of Lithornis vulturinus, a palaeognathous bird from the early Eocene of Europe. Lithornis may provide the clearest insights to date into the neuroanatomy of the ancestral crown bird, combining an ancestrally unflexed brain with a caudally oriented connection with the spinal cord, a moderately enlarged telencephalon, and ventrally shifted, enlarged optic lobes. Lithornithidae, an assemblage of volant Palaeogene fossil birds, provide our clearest insights into the early evolutionary history of Palaeognathae, the clade that today includes the flightless ratites and volant tinamous. The neotype specimen of Lithornis vulturinus, from the early Eocene (approximately 53 million years ago) of Europe, includes a partial neurocranium that has never been thoroughly investigated. Here, we describe these cranial remains including the nearly complete digital endocasts of the brain and bony labyrinth. The telencephalon of Lithornis is expanded and its optic lobes are ventrally shifted, as is typical for crown birds. The foramen magnum is positioned caudally, rather than flexed ventrally as in some crown birds, with the optic lobes, cerebellum, and foramen magnum shifted further ventrally. The overall brain shape is similar to that of tinamous, the only extant clade of flying palaeognaths, suggesting that several aspects of tinamou neuroanatomy may have been evolutionarily conserved since at least the early Cenozoic. The estimated ratio of the optic lobe's surface area relative to the total brain suggests a diurnal ecology. Lithornis may provide the clearest insights to date into the neuroanatomy of the ancestral crown bird, combining an ancestrally unflexed brain with a caudally oriented connection with the spinal cord, a moderately enlarged telencephalon, and ventrally shifted, enlarged optic lobes.

Abstract:Phorusrhacidae, commonly known as terror birds, constitutes a group of Cariamiformes that lived mainly in South America during the Cenozoic. The oldest record is represented by an isolated distal end of tibiotarsus (MLP-PV 75-II-3-22) discovered in the Lutetian (middle Eocene) levels of the Sarmiento Formation exposed in the Cañadón Vaca locality (Chubut Province, Argentina). Despite being frequently cited as the oldest specimen of Phorusrhacidae, this specimen has never been figured or comprehensively described. Motivated by this gap and recognising the significance of this finding, we conducted a detailed comparison of the tibiotarsus MLP-PV 75-II-3-22 with those of other species, assigning it to an indeterminate species of Psilopterinae with an estimated body mass of approximately 5 kg. Furthermore, following the identification of numerous tooth marks on the distal surface, we hypothesised that this small phorusrhacid may have been subjected to an attack or scavenging event by a small-to-medium predator, such as Nemolestes spalacotherinus , a hypercarnivorous marsupial previously recorded in the Cañadón Vaca assemblage.

The neck as a keystone structure in avian macroevolution and mosaicism

Abstract:Background: The origin of birds from non-avian theropod dinosaur ancestors required a comprehensive restructuring of the body plan to enable the evolution of powered flight. One of the proposed key mechanisms that allowed birds to acquire flight and modify the associated anatomical structures into diverse forms is mosaic evolution, which describes the parcelization of phenotypic traits into separate modules that evolve with heterogeneous tempo and mode. Avian mosaicism has been investigated with a focus on the cranial and appendicular skeleton, and as such, we do not understand the role of the axial column in avian macroevolution. The long, flexible neck of extant birds lies between the cranial and pectoral modules and represents an opportunity to study the contribution of the axial skeleton to avian mosaicism. Results: Here, we use 3D geometric morphometrics in tandem with phylogenetic comparative methods to provide, to our knowledge, the first integrative analysis of avian neck evolution in context with the head and wing and to interrogate how the interactions between these anatomical systems have influenced macroevolutionary trends across a broad sample of extant birds. We find that the neck is integrated with both the head and the forelimb. These patterns of integration are variable across clades, and only specific ecological groups exhibit either head-neck or neck-forelimb integration. Finally, we find that ecological groups that display head-neck and neck-forelimb integration tend to display significant shifts in the rate of neck morphological evolution. Conclusions: Combined, these results suggest that the interaction between trophic ecology and head-neck-forelimb mosaicism influences the evolutionary variance of the avian neck. By linking together the biomechanical functions of these distinct anatomical systems, the cervical vertebral column serves as a keystone structure in avian mosaicism and macroevolution.
The evolution and ecology of gigantism in terror birds (Aves, Phorusrhacidae)

Abstract:Terror birds (Aves, Phorusrhacidae) were large flightless apex predators in South America during the Cenozoic. Here, we estimate a new phylogeny for phorusrhacids using Bayesian inference. We demonstrate phylogenetic evidence for a monophyletic Patagornithinae and find significant support for a distinct crown group associated with the quintessential ‘terror bird’ characteristics. We use this phylogeny to analyse the evolution of body size and cursoriality. Our results reveal that size overlap was rare between co-occurring subfamilies, supporting the hypothesis that these traits were important for niche partitioning. We observe that gigantism evolved in a single clade, containing Phorusrhacinae and Physornithinae. The members of this lineage were consistently larger than all other phorusrhacids. Phorusrhacinae emerged following the extinction of Physornithinae, suggesting the ecological succession of the apex predator niche. The first known phorusrhacine, Phorusrhacos longissimus , was gigantic but significantly smaller and more cursorial than any physornithine. These traits likely evolved in response to the expansion of open environments. Following the Santacrucian SALMA, phorusrhacines increased in size, further converging on the morphology of Physornithinae. These findings suggest that the evolution and displacement of body size drove terror bird niche partitioning and competitive exclusion controlled phorusrhacid diversity.

Abstract:Tyrannosaurus rex and other tyrannosaurid theropods exerted high bite forces, and large muscle attachments suggest that the tyrannosaurid neck was a concomitantly powerful component of the feeding apparatus. We examine accelerative and work-generating capacity (WGC) of neck muscles in adult Tyrannosaurus rex, using a 3-D vector-based method that incorporates aspects of muscle force generation, reconstruction of muscle morphology and moment arms, and rotational inertias of the head and neck. Under conservative assumptions, radial accelerations of the head by large superficial muscles (M. transversospinalis capitis, M. complexus, and M. longissimus capitis superficialis) enabled rapid gaze shifts and imparted high tangential velocities to food sufficient for inertial feeding. High WGC by these and deeper muscles under eccentric contraction indicate high efficacy for tearing flesh, especially with the head and neck in an extended posture. Sensitivity analyses suggest that assigned density of the antorbital region has substantial effects on calculated rotational inertia, and hence on the accuracy of results. However, even with high latitude for estimation errors, the results indicate that adult T. rex could strike rapidly at prey and engage in complexly modulated inertial feeding, as seen in extant archosaurs.

The elongated neck of sauropodomorph dinosaurs evolved gradually

Abstract:Discoveries from South America have increased our knowledge on the early evolutionary history of sauropodomorph dinosaurs. The dietary shift from faunivorous to herbivorous creatures and the increasing body size are both widely documented in the fossil record. Conversely, the initial evolution of the elongated neck is poorly known. It is one of the most diagnostic features of Sauropodomorpha. There is a gap between the record of short-necked sauropodomorphs from Carnian (±233 Ma) and long-necked forms from early Norian (±225 Ma). As a consequence, it is unknown if the cervical vertebrae became long gradually or abruptly. In the present study, we present a new specimen excavated from strata that belong to this time interval (±228 Ma). CAPPA/UFSM 0352 comprises a series of five cervical vertebrae unearthed from the Late Triassic of Southern Brazil. The vertebrae are proportionately longer than that of older forms and proportionately shorter than that of younger ones. Therefore, our results demonstrate that the elongation of the neck of sauropodomorphs is an example of gradual evolutionary process. Except by its elongated shape, the general anatomy of the cervical elements resembles that of the earliest forms (i.e., have a conservative anatomy). Combined with previous data, it is possible to conclude that the shape of the skull and teeth, as well as the neck proportions, were the first structures to clearly differ derived sauropodomorphs from early diverging forms. Finally, some of the recovered phylogenetic scenarios favor the origins of the elongated neck in the clade Bagualosauria.
Chemical compositions and anti-inflammatory activities of essential oils from Aster spathulifolius and Vitex rotundifolia maxim

Analysis of ASE provided 15 components and eight of which were identified sesquiterpene compounds. The major components in ASE included germacrene D (35.1 %), trans-caryophyllene (15.9 %) and trans-phytol (14.9 %). On the other hand, VRE provided manoyl oxide (14.3%), α-terpineol (13.1 %) and α-pinene (10.0 %) as major ingredients. To assess the anti-inflammatory effects of the essential oils, the production of nitric oxide (NO) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α were monitored using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated RAW 264.7 macrophages. In this test, ASE and VRE were appeared to suppress both NO and TNF-α synthesis in dose-dependent manner. The results indicate that VRE and ASE could be useful in cosmetic applications as natural products possessing antiinflammatory efficacy.
Skull morphology of the enigmatic Genyornis newtoni Stirling and Zeitz, 1896 (Aves, Dromornithidae), with implications for functional morphology, ecology, and evolution in the context of Galloanserae

Abstract:The presence of Dromornithidae in the Australian Cenozoic fossil record was first reported in 1872, yet although eight species and hundreds of specimens are known, key information on their morphology remains elusive. This is especially so for their skulls, which contributes to a lack of resolution regarding their relationships within Galloanserae. The skull of the Pleistocene dromornithid, Genyornis newtoni , was initially described in 1913. Additional fossils of this species have since been discovered and understanding of avian skull osteology, arthrology, and myological correlates has greatly advanced. Here we present a complete redescription of the skull of Genyornis newtoni , updating knowledge on its morphology, soft-tissue correlates, and palaeobiology. We explore the diversity within Dromornithidae and make comprehensive comparisons to fossil and extant galloanserans. Furthermore, we expand on the homologies of skull muscles, especially regarding the jaw adductors and address the conflicting and unstable placement of dromornithids within Galloanserae. Findings support generic distinction of Genyornis newtoni , and do not support the close association of Dromornithidae and Gastornithidae. We thus recommend removal of the dromornithids from the Gastornithiformes. Considering character polarities, the results of our phylogenetic analyses, and palaeogeography, our findings instead support the alternative hypotheses, of dromornithids within, or close to, the Suborder Anhimae with Anseriformes.

Digital restoration of the pectoral girdles of two Early Cretaceous birds and implications for early-flight evolution

Abstract:The morphology of the pectoral girdle, the skeletal structure connecting the wing to the body, is a key determinant of flight capability, but in some respects is poorly known among stem birds. Here, the pectoral girdles of the Early Cretaceous birds Sapeornis and Piscivorenantiornis are reconstructed for the first time based on computed tomography and three-dimensional visualization, revealing key morphological details that are important for our understanding of early-flight evolution. Sapeornis exhibits a double articulation system (widely present in non-enantiornithine pennaraptoran theropods including crown birds), which involves, alongside the main scapula-coracoid joint, a small subsidiary joint, though variation exists with respect to the shape and size of the main and subsidiary articular contacts in non-enantiornithine pennaraptorans. This double articulation system contrasts with Piscivorenantiornis in which a spatially restricted scapula-coracoid joint is formed by a single set of opposing articular surfaces, a feature also present in other members of Enantiornithines, a major clade of stem birds known only from the Cretaceous. The unique single articulation system may reflect correspondingly unique flight behavior in enantiornithine birds, but this hypothesis requires further investigation from a functional perspective. Our renderings indicate that both Sapeornis and Piscivorenantiornis had a partially closed triosseal canal (a passage for muscle tendon that plays a key role in raising the wing), and our study suggests that this type of triosseal canal occurred in all known non-euornithine birds except Archaeopteryx , representing a transitional stage in flight apparatus evolution before the appearance of a fully closed bony triosseal canal as in modern birds. Our study reveals additional lineage-specific variations in pectoral girdle anatomy, as well as significant modification of the pectoral girdle along the line to crown birds. These modifications produced diverse pectoral girdle morphologies among Mesozoic birds, which allowed a commensurate range of capability levels and styles to emerge during the early evolution of flight.

Abstract:Sauropods are the largest terrestrial vertebrates ever known. During their evolution, they underwent numerous morphological changes, some of which occurred at the end of the Early Jurassic. However, current knowledge of Early Jurassic dinosaurs is scarce, especially cranial information. Here we describe the skull of the basal eusauropod Bagualia alba from the Cañadón Asfalto Formation (Toarcian; Early Jurassic) of Patagonia, Argentina, which represents the most complete eusauropod skull from the late Early Jurassic worldwide. The osteological description and phylogenetic relationships of Bagualia allowed us to determine the acquisition of the common cranial bauplan of eusauropods at the end of the Early Jurassic: a tall and robust rostrum with great retraction of the external nares; a deep narial fossa; a reduced antorbital fenestra; verticalization of the lacrimal; prefrontal without an anterior process; anteroposterior shortening of the frontal; a supratemporal fenestra visible laterally; a robust braincase; 'U'-shaped jaws in dorsal view; reduction in the number of teeth in the dentary; teeth with crown to crown occlusion; development of lateral plates in the premaxilla and maxilla; and a dorsoventral expansion of the dentary symphysis. These cranial characteristics were recently suggested to be related to a change in the diet of the sauropods toward mainly hard vegetation. In this context, Bagualia contributes to filling a gap in cranial evolution between the gracile skulls of Sauropodiformes and the highly robust skulls widely represented in Middle Jurassic taxa.

Unique internal anatomy of vertebrae as a key factor for neck elongation in Triassic archosauromorphs

Abstract:The Triassic was a key period in the evolution of vertebrates, and reptiles in particular, giving rise to a plethora of successful lineages, some of which are still extant. One of the groups that flourished during the early Mesozoic were the tanysaurians (Archosauromorpha: Tanysauria). They had elongate neck vertebrae that in some genera reached extreme proportions. Here, we provide the first comprehensive description of the internal structure of these extraordinary elements, focusing on the famously bizarre Tanystropheus . Through computed tomography and sectioning, we were able to reveal some intriguing features comparable to those seen in pterosaurs and birds. However, contrary to what we see in pneumatic bones, cervicals of tanysaurians contain a singular voluminous cavity. This results in a cylindrical structure in these vertebrae, which likely provided durability, while contributing less to the weight of the neck. These insights are relevant for better understanding of a unique and extreme anatomy among tetrapods, which evolved as a result of very strict selection for some particular function. Importantly, our findings demonstrate that major modifications of the internal anatomy of vertebrae were not unique to derived avemetatarsalians (pterosaurs and dinosaurs), but more widespread among reptiles.

Abstract:The availability of Danish registers permits the construction of indicators for monitoring the quality of prescriptions in general practice. Such indicators should have a high face-, construct-, content- and criteria validity. No easy way of assessing an indicator's validity has yet been developed, and it remains unknown whether access to clinical and socioeconomic registers will improve the usefulness of such indicators.

Abstract:Abstract Trigonosaurus pricei is a small to medium-sized sauropod dinosaur (Sauropoda: Titanosauria) from the Late Cretaceous Bauru Group of Brazil that is known from a significant amount of recovered axial elements [four cervical vertebrae, 10 dorsal vertebrae, sacrum (MCT 1488-R), and 10 caudal vertebrae (MCT 1719-R)]. In this biomechanical work, we approach the hypothesis of the cartilaginous neutral pose and the range of motion of the axial series of Trigonosaurus. The results show that this sauropod could be capable of high elevation of the neck resulting from morphological adaptations of the cervicodorsal region on dorsal (D) vertebrae D2 and D3 (e.g. postzygapophyses of D2 positioned over the vertebral centrum and prezygapophyses of D3 over the anterior vertebral centrum). This implies that D2 articulates (cartilaginous neutral posture) with D3 only at a strong dorsally directed angle, resulting in a shift in the direction of the neck to a more elevated posture. Furthermore, the tail attributed to Trigonosaurus as a paratype could be oriented in the horizontal ‘direction’ and presented a sigmoidal ‘shape’. This work contributes generally to the understanding of variation in the body plan of sauropods and, more specifically, to the feeding strategy of small and medium-sized titanosaurs from semi-arid regions of Gondwana.

The evolution of the pectoral extrinsic appendicular and infrahyoid musculature in theropods and its functional and behavioral importance

Abstract:Birds have lost and modified the musculature joining the pectoral girdle to the skull and hyoid, called the pectoral extrinsic appendicular and infrahyoid musculature. These muscles include the levator scapulae, sternomandibularis, sternohyoideus, episternocleidomastoideus, trapezius, and omohyoideus. As non-avian theropod dinosaurs are the closest relatives to birds, it is worth investigating what conditions they may have exhibited to learn when and how these muscles were lost or modified. Using extant phylogenetic bracketing, osteological correlates and non-osteological influences of these muscles are identified and discussed. Compsognathids and basal Maniraptoriformes were found to have been the likeliest transition points of a derived avian condition of losing or modifying these muscles. Increasing needs to control the feather tracts of the neck and shoulder, for insulation, display, or tightening/readjustment of the skin after dynamic neck movements may have been the selective force that drove some of these muscles to be modified into dermo-osseous muscles. The loss and modification of shoulder protractors created a more immobile girdle that would later be advantageous for flight in birds. The loss of the infrahyoid muscles freed the hyolarynx, trachea, and esophagus which may have aided in vocal tract filtering.

Abstract:The avian neck acts as a surrogate forelimb and allows birds to manipulate their surroundings. Birds display an enormous diversity in neck morphology across multiple anatomical scales. Here I review the development, function and evolution of the avian cervical spine. Future work should aim to broaden our understanding of the cervical anatomy, development and kinematics to include a more diverse selection of extant birds, while also considering the macroevolutionary drivers and consequences of this important section of the avian spine. The neck is a critical portion of the avian spine, one that works in tandem with the beak to act as a surrogate forelimb and allows birds to manipulate their surroundings despite the lack of a grasping capable hand. Birds display an incredible amount of diversity in neck morphology across multiple anatomical scales—from varying cervical counts down to intricate adaptations of individual vertebrae. Despite this morphofunctional disparity, little is known about the drivers of this enormous variation, nor how neck evolution has shaped avian macroevolution. To promote interest in this system, I review the development, function and evolution of the avian cervical spine. The musculoskeletal anatomy, basic kinematics and development of the avian neck are all documented, but focus primarily upon commercially available taxa. In addition, recent work has quantified the drivers of extant morphological variation across the avian neck, as well as patterns of integration between the neck and other skeletal elements. However, the evolutionary history of the avian cervical spine, and its contribution to the diversification and success of modern birds is currently unknown. Future work should aim to broaden our understanding of the cervical anatomy, development and kinematics to include a more diverse selection of extant birds, while also considering the macroevolutionary drivers and consequences of this important section of the avian spine.
