Abstract:Shellfish reefs around the world have become degraded, and recent efforts have focused on restoring these valuable habitats. This study is the first to assess the efficacy of a bouchot-style reef, where mussels were seeded onto wooden stakes and deployed in a hypereutrophic estuary in Australia. While >60% of translocated mussels survived one month, after ten months, only 2% remained alive, with this mortality being accompanied, at least initially, by declining body condition. Mussel survival, growth, body condition and recruitment were greater on the top section of the stake, implying that the distance from the substrate was important. More fish species inhabited the reefs (31) than unstructured control sites (17). Reefs were also colonised by a range of invertebrate species, including 11 native and six non-indigenous species. However, the number of individuals declined from 4495 individuals from 14 species in December 2019 to 35 individuals representing 4 species in March 2021, likely due to hypoxic bottom water conditions following unseasonal rainfall. Although the bouchot-style reefs were unable to sustain mussels and other invertebrates over sequential years, this approach has the potential to be successful if deployed in shallow water or intertidal zones, which are largely exempt from biotic and abiotic stressors characteristic of deeper waters in microtidal estuaries.

Abstract:Macroalgal forests play a crucial ecological role, providing important ecosystem services, but are also among the most vulnerable marine habitats. In the Mediterranean Sea, the forests of Cystoseira sensu lato (s.l.) are undergoing a drastic decline due to the presence of multiple stressors, and among these species, Gongolaria barbata is one of the most threatened. Despite the various attempts to restore these macroalgal forests, the success of the interventions is limited by the availability of fertile apices to promote zygotes release and the embryo development for subsequent replacement in situ. Here, we propose a new approach based on the use of G. barbata stranded on the beach for the restoration of these marine habitats. We developed a protocol based on the collection of stranded macroalgae to collect their fertile apices and produce healthy zygotes and embryos, whose recruits can be then returned at sea (through ad hoc hard substrates). We show that 3 months of incubation in mesocosms allow the recruits to reach an average length of 1–2 mm with an average density of 50–80 recruits per tile. We demonstrate that these recruits can survive and grow vigorously both in mesocosms, and after being outplanted at sea. The protocol presented here has the double advantage: (1) obtaining recruits without impacting the natural populations and (2) providing a second life to macroalgal fragments (through ecological restoration) that would otherwise be lost.

Abstract:<ul class="plain-list"><li>Coastal ecosystem engineers often depend on self‐facilitating feedbacks to ameliorate environmental stress. This makes the restoration of such coastal ecosystem engineers difficult. We question if we can increase transplantation success in highly dynamic coastal areas by engineering measures that promote the development of self‐facilitating feedback processes.</li><li>Intertidal blue mussels (Mytilus edulis ) are a typical example of ecosystem engineers that are difficult to restore. A lack of self‐facilitating feedbacks at low densities limit establishment success when young mussels are transplanted on dynamic mudflats. </li><li>In a large field experiment we investigated the possibility of increasing transplantation success by stimulating the formation of an aggregated spatial configuration in mussels, thereby reducing hydrologically induced dislodgment and the risks of predation. For this we applied engineering measures in the form of fences that trapped wave dislodged mussels.</li><li>Mussel loss rates were significantly lower when mussels were placed between both artificial fences, and in high densities (4.2 kg m‐2) compared with mussels placed in areas without fences and in low densities (2.1 kg m‐2). The fences induced the formation of a banded pattern with high local mussel densities, which locally reduced predation. </li><li>Synthesis and applications. Our results underline the importance of actively promoting the development of self‐facilitating processes, such as aggregation into patterns, in restoration projects of ecosystem engineers. In particular the current study shows that engineering measures can help to initiate these kinds of self‐facilitating interactions, especially in highly dynamic areas. </li></ul>

Abstract:The substitution of natural habitats with artificial structures, such as coastal defence structures, has significantly detrimental effects on the marine biological community. In this context, the application of ecological engineering to marine ecosystems presents an opportunity to mitigate these environmental impacts and enhance ecosystem services. There are proposals aimed at mimicking structures found in the natural environment to increase topographic complexity in artificial substrates, thereby promoting biodiversity and hindering the establishment of invasive species. The present study focuses on assessing change in the biological community of intertidal pools constructed on existing coastal defence structures and their influence on a halo (5 cm) of humidity created around the pools. Using an inexpensive method, the tidepools were created at the beginning of 2014 using a pneumatic hammer (DeWalt brand D25902K), imitating the tidepools of the adjacent natural substrate. The coastal defence structures (riprap) which were selected for the study host climax communities since they were built >8 years ago. After 7.5 years of the creation of this microhabitat, the value of species richness in the tidepool was 64.2% higher than in the control, Shannon diversity 41.54% and functional diversity 6.27%. The study of the effect on a halo (5 cm) of humidity produced around the pool shows that Shannon diversity is higher than in the control treatment, demonstrating that the microhabitat created mitigates the harsh environmental (high temperature and desiccation) conditions of the intertidal zone beyond the interior of the tidepool. The results showed that the species richness in the tidepools was bigger in the high intertidal than the low, therefore it is more beneficial to create this microhabitat in high intertidal zone. The created microhabitats serve as shelter and breeding sites for animal species that were not previously observed in the studied artificial structure, as detected for species such as Pisania striata, Ocenebra edwarasii , Stramonita haemastoma , Meralarhaphe neritoides , Siphonaria pectinata, Paracentrotus lividus and Spirorbis sp., thus contribute to reducing the fragmentation of their populations. In terms of "ecological succession", the current study demonstrated that typical species of a mature benthic biological community had colonised the created microhabitat 7.5 years later. These species included the Anthozoa Anemonia sulcata , Actinia equina and Exaiptasia diaphana or the endangered Mollusc Dendropoma lebeche .

Epilithic Bacterial Assemblages on Subtidal Rocky Reefs: Variation Among Alternative Habitats at Ambient and Enhanced Nutrient Levels

Abstract:Temperate rocky reefs often support mosaics of alternative habitats such as macroalgal forests, algal turfs and sea urchin barrens. Although the composition of epilithic microbial biofilms (EMBs) is recognized as a major determinant of macroalgal recruitment, their role in regulating the stability of alternative habitats on temperate rocky reefs remains unexplored. On shallow rocky reefs of the Island of Capraia (NW Mediterranean), we compared EMB structure among canopy stands formed by the fucoid Ericaria brachycarpa, algal turfs, and urchin barrens under ambient versus experimentally enhanced nutrient levels. The three habitats shared a core microbial community consisting of 21.6 and 25.3% of total ASVs under ambient and enhanced nutrient conditions, respectively. Although Gammaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria and Flavobacteriia were the most abundant classes across habitats, multivariate analyses at the ASV level showed marked differences in EMB composition among habitats. Enhancing nutrient level had no significant effect on EMBs, although it increased their similarity between macroalgal canopy and turf habitats. At both ambient and enriched nutrient levels, ASVs mostly belonging to Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were more abundant in EMBs from macroalgal canopies than barrens. In contrast, ASVs belonging to the phylum of Proteobacteria and, in particular, to the families of Rhodobacteraceae and Flavobacteriaceae at ambient nutrient levels and of Rhodobacteraceae and Bacteriovoracaceae at enhanced nutrient levels were more abundant in turf than canopy habitats. Our results show that primary surfaces from alternative habitats that form mosaics on shallow rocky reefs in oligotrophic areas host distinct microbial communities that are, to some extent, resistant to moderate nutrient enhancement. Understanding the role of EMBs in generating reinforcing feedback under different nutrient loading regimes appears crucial to advance our understanding of the mechanisms underpinning the stability of habitats alternative to macroalgal forests as well as their role in regulating reverse shifts.
Monthly macroalgal surveys reveal a diverse and dynamic community in an urban intertidal zone

Abstract:Historical baseline data are critical to measuring how communities shift in response to climate change and anthropogenic activity. Macroalgae are marine foundation species that are vulnerable to climate change, but there is a lack of baseline macroalgal biodiversity data for many areas of British Columbia, particularly at a high temporal resolution over years. This presents an obstacle for measuring how communities change in response to shifting average conditions as well as after extreme events, such as the 2021 heat dome. To increase baseline macroalgae biodiversity data in British Columbia, we established a monthly transect-based macroalgal survey in 2021 at an urban intertidal site with a survey protocol that is low cost and easy to replicate. Our datasets and our survey protocol are freely available. Over 35 months we have recorded 59 species of macroalgae, including the canopy forming kelp and the non-native fucoid . Surveying throughout the year at regular intervals has revealed large-scale seasonal shifts in macroalgal community composition, timing of kelp recruitment, and a decrease in abundance of in the upper intertidal zone over multiple years. Our publicly accessible data constitute the most comprehensive survey of intertidal macroalgal diversity in Burrard Inlet, illustrating how simple surveying methods can provide high resolution records of macroalgae biodiversity, particularly in easily accessible urban environments.

Abstract:Restoration engineering measures, such as managed realignments or building groins, modify the environmental characteristics of coastal intertidal ecosystems. Creating physical modifications that are beneficial to an intertidal system's ecology necessitates an in‐depth understanding of the relationships between the abiotic and biotic components of a given intertidal habitat. In this study, we evaluate how hydrodynamics and sediment characteristics drive the development of the benthic macrofauna community during the first 5 years following engineering measures to enhance benthic macrofauna diversity at three locations. The creation of low‐energy habitats through groins (Knuitershoek and Baalhoek) and a managed realignment dike breach (Perkpolder) led to the accumulation of fine sediments in all three impact sites. Biomass of benthic macrofauna quickly increased between 2016 and 2020, with successional processes being more important in Perkpolder, where the habitat was started completely from scratch due to a managed realignment, than at Knuitershoek or Baalhoek, where habitat conditions were improved by adding groins. In addition, the density of benthos‐eating birds, especially oystercatchers, increased at some of the modified sites. While a low‐energy habitat may harbor more diverse assemblages of benthic macrofauna than a highly dynamic one, the extremely high silt content, which is typical for low‐energy habitats, may slow benthic community development. The observed increase of biomass at our impact sites highlights the value of the interventions, while the delays in the response of the benthic macrofauna community emphasizes the need for extensive monitoring both in time and space and the identification of underlying abiotic–biotic mechanisms.

Abstract:Coastal kelp forests are important sources of primary productivity and provide essential habitat and ecosystem services. In many areas around the world, the formation and persistence of urchin barrens threatens kelp forest ecosystems. Over the past several decades, restoration efforts have emerged aiming to increase the abundance of foundation species like kelp in such systems. However, we lack a comprehensive understanding of how successful kelp restoration affects the nutritional landscape and the fitness of kelp forest herbivores. We bridge this knowledge gap with a Before-After-Control-Impact Paired Series (BACIPS) focused on kelp forest restoration where reductions of herbivorous sea urchins in Haida Gwaii resulted in substantial increases in kelp abundance in habitat previously characterized as barrens. Specifically, we document body size specific shifts in the fatty acid (FA) profiles of red sea urchins ( ) and northern abalone ( ). FAs associated with bacteria and diatoms were elevated in tissues of urchins and abalone in barrens habitat while kelp biomarkers were elevated in restored kelp forest habitat. For urchins, these shifts tracked the increase in gonad mass following kelp forest recovery. For abalone, these results varied depending on animal body size. Specifically, abalone exhibited a continuous size-specific shift from biofilm-associated markers at small sizes to kelp-associated markers as animals increased in size. For both species, a marked increase in essential fatty acids was observed following kelp restoration. Our results demonstrate kelp restoration via sea urchin reduction enhances not only the quantity but also the quality and diversity of food in previously degraded habitats, and subsequently enhances the amount and nutritional quality of roe (i.e., gonads) in sea urchins therein.

Complexity–biodiversity relationships on marine urban structures: reintroducing habitat heterogeneity through eco-engineering

Abstract:Urbanization is leading to biodiversity loss through habitat homogenization. The smooth, featureless surfaces of many marine urban structures support ecological communities, often of lower biodiversity, distinct from the complex natural habitats they replace. Eco-engineering (design for ecological co-benefits) seeks to enhance biodiversity and ecological functions on urban structures. We assessed the benefits to biodiversity of retrofitting four types of complex habitat panels to an intertidal seawall at patch (versus flat control panels) and site (versus unmodified control seawalls and reference rocky shores) scales. Two years after installation, patch-scale effects of complex panels on biodiversity ranged from neutral to positive, depending on the protective features they provided, though all but one design (honeycomb) supported unique species. Water-retaining features (rockpools) and crevices, which provided moisture retention and cooling, increased biodiversity and supported algae and invertebrates otherwise absent. At the site scale, biodiversity benefits ranged from neutral at the high- and mid-intertidal to positive at the low-intertidal elevation. The results highlight the importance of matching eco-engineering interventions to the niche of target species, and environmental conditions. While species richness was greatest on rockpool and crevice panels, the unique species supported by other panel designs highlights that to maximize biodiversity, habitat heterogeneity is essential.

Abstract:<ol class=""><li>Although long‐term ecological stability is often discussed as a community attribute, it is typically investigated at the species level (e.g. density, biomass), or as a univariate metric (e.g. species diversity). To provide a more comprehensive assessment of long‐term community stability, we used a multivariate similarity approach that included all species and their relative abundances.</li><li>We used data from 74 sites sampled annually from 2006 to 2017 to examine broad temporal and spatial patterns of change within rocky intertidal communities along the west coast of North America. We explored relationships between community change (inverse of stability) and the following potential drivers of change/stability: (a) marine heatwave events; (b) three attributes of biodiversity: richness, diversity and evenness and (c) presence of the mussel, Mytilus californianus, a dominant space holder and foundation species in this system. </li><li>At a broad scale, we found an inverse relationship between community stability and elevated water temperatures. In addition, we found substantial differences in stability among regions, with lower stability in the south, which may provide a glimpse into the patterns expected with a changing climate. At the site level, community stability was linked to high species richness and, perhaps counterintuitively, to low evenness, which could be a consequence of the dominance of mussels in this system.</li><li>Synthesis. Assessments of long‐term stability at the whole‐community level are rarely done but are key to a comprehensive understanding of the impacts of climate change. In communities structured around a spatially dominant species, long‐term stability can be linked to the stability of this 'foundation species', as well as to traditional predictors, such as species richness. </li></ol>

Abstract:In the rocky intertidal zone, tides and rocks set the stage. Together they create habitat for a diverse community of species adapted to a world both underwater (high tide) and exposed to air (low tide). In some protected areas, like national parks, we study rocky intertidal ecosystems as vital signs of nature’s health. Studying them helps us understand the impact of disturbances, which play an important role in shaping these communities. Some disturbances, like the tides, happen daily. Others, like diseases, might happen once every decade. This article is about how tides and diseases affect two important members of rocky intertidal communities—mussels and sea stars. We explain the roles these organisms play and what happened when ochre sea stars, an important species in these habitats, suffered a major disease outbreak. Last, we emphasize the importance of protecting these vital ecosystems so we can continue to learn about the health of the natural environment.

Abstract:Introduction: To counteract the rapid loss of marine forests globally and meet international commitments of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and the Convention on Biological Diversity '30 by 30' targets, there is an urgent need to enhance our capacity for macroalgal restoration. The Green Gravel Action Group (GGAG) is a global network of 67 members that are working on the restoration of a diverse range of macroalgal forests and it aims to facilitate knowledge exchange to fast-track innovation and implementation of outplanting approaches worldwide. Methods: Here, we overview 25 projects conducted by members of the group that are focused on testing and developing techniques for macroalgal restoration. Based on these projects, we summarise the major challenges associated with scaling up the area of marine forests restored. Results: We identify several critical challenges that currently impede more widespread rollout of effective large-scale macroalgal restoration worldwide: 1) funding and capacity limitations, 2) difficulties arising from conditions at restoration sites, 3) technical barriers, and 4) challenges at the restoration-policy interface. Discussion: Despite these challenges, there has been substantial progress, with an increasing number of efforts, community engagement and momentum towards scaling up activities in recent years. Drawing on the collective expertise of the GGAG, we outline key recommendations for the scaling up of restoration efforts to match the goals of international commitments. These include the establishment of novel pathways to fund macroalgal restoration activities, building skills and capacity, harnessing emerging innovations in mobile hatchery and seeding technologies, and the development of the scientific and governance frameworks necessary to implement and monitor macroalgal restoration projects at scale.

Abstract:A photoelectron emitted from a conducting solid may suffer a substantial energy change through ohmic losses that can drastically alter the line shape on the millielectron volt scale that is now observable through improved resolution. Almost all of this energy loss occurs after the electron leaves the solid. These losses are expected to be important in isotropic materials with relatively low conductivity, such as certain colossal magnetoresistance manganates, and in very electrically anisotropic materials, such as one-dimensional conductors, and may also affect interpretation of photoemission in superconductors with high transition temperatures. The electric field of the photoelectron can penetrate the solid, and extrinsic losses of this type can mimic pseudogap effects and other peculiar features of photoemission in cubic manganates, as illustrated for La0.67Ca0.33MnO3.

Abstract:A vacuum-voltmeter (VVM) was fielded on the Saturn pulsed power generator during a series of argon gas-puff Z-pinch shots. Time-resolved voltage and separately measured load current are used to determine several dynamic properties as the load implodes, namely, the inductance, L(t), net energy coupled to the load, E(coupled)(t), and the load radius, r(t). The VVM is a two-stage voltage divider, designed to operate at voltages up to 2 MV. The VVM is presently being modified to operate at voltages up to 6 MV for eventual use on the Z generator.

Abstract:Decades of eutrophication in Danish estuaries have changed the dominant primary producers from eelgrass ( Zostera marina ) meadows to phytoplankton and ephemeral macroalgae. This has resulted in enrichment of sediments with organic matter, and frequent bottom-water hypoxia that negatively affects the macrofauna community. In this study, we propose that restoration by sand-capping is a solution to improve sediment conditions, which may facilitate eelgrass restoration and accelerate recovery of macrofauna communities. Sand-capping was carried out by adding a layer of approximately 10 cm of sand on top of 1.4 ha of organic-rich sediment. One year later, we transplanted 6000 eelgrass shoots onto the sand-cap; however, they did not survive more than a few months due to blooms of filamentous algae that smothered the eelgrass. The sand-cap remained intact and the colonization of macrofauna was investigated by analysis of species richness ( S ), abundance ( N ) and feeding guilds (FGs) in the sand-capped area and at uncapped sediment. S , N and diversity of FGs were significantly higher for infauna in the sand-capped area compared to uncapped sediment after 1 yr. Abstract:As the mussel farming industry moves offshore, there is a need to fill evidence gaps on its ecological impacts. Over eight years, this research presents the results of a long-term monitoring study of the UK's first large scale offshore mussel farm following a BACI (Before-After Control-Impact) approach to evaluate the temporal and spatial effects of the farm on benthic habitat and epibenthic species assemblages. Situated in historical fishing ground, the farm is located on a degraded seabed ecosystem dominated by soft sediment. After seven years of farming, damaged seabed increased its complexity, with biogenic reef being created (30 % increase). The structure is attracting a significantly increasing diversity and abundance of sessile, sedentary and mobile species to the area compared to control sites. The abundance and diversity of commercial species increased compared to far control sites and certain commercial species were exclusively recorded beneath the mussel headlines: Cancer pagurus, Maja squinado and Necora puber . Results are discussed through a three mechanisms framework: Species recruitment, settlement, and subsidy. Results from this study are crucial to support policymakers develope a sustainable offshore industry as part of the blue economy that can both produce sustainable protein and contribute to marine conservation objectives as 'other effective area-based conservation measures' (OECM). This study reports how low-trophic farming can support nature restoration and recovery.

Abstract:Increasing responsiveness to anthropogenic climate change and the loss of global shellfish ecosystems has heightened interest in the carbon storage and sequestration potential of bivalve‐dominated systems. While coastal ecosystems are dynamic zones of carbon transformation and change, current uncertainties and notable heterogeneity in the benthic environment make it difficult to ascertain the climate change mitigation capacity of ongoing coastal restoration projects aimed at revitalising benthic bivalve populations. In this study we sought to distinguish between direct and indirect effects of subtidal green‐lipped mussels (Perna canaliculus) on carbon cycling, and combined published literature with in‐situ experiments from restored beds to create a carbon budget for New Zealand's shellfish restoration efforts. A direct summation of biogenic calcification, community respiration, and sediment processes suggests a moderate carbon efflux (+100.1 to 179.6 g C m‐2 yr‐1) occurs as a result of recent restoration efforts, largely reflective of the heterotrophic nature of bivalves. However, an examination of indirect effects of restoration on benthic community metabolism and sediment dynamics suggests that beds achieve greater carbon fixation rates and support enhanced carbon burial compared to nearby sediments devoid of mussels. We discuss limitations to our first‐order approximation and postulate how the significance of mussel restoration to carbon‐related outcomes likely increases over longer time scales. Coastal restoration is often conducted to support the provisioning of many ecosystem services, and we propose here that shellfish restoration not be used as a single measure to offset carbon dioxide emissions, but rather used in tandem with other initiatives to recover a bundle of valued ecosystem services.

Abstract:Offshore ocean aquaculture is expanding globally to meet the growing demand for sustainable food production. At the United Kingdom's largest longline mussel farm, we assessed the potential for the farm to improve the habitat suitability for commercially important crustaceans. Modelled distribution patterns (GAM & GLM) predicted the low complexity seabed beneath the mussel farm was 34-94 % less suitable for European lobster (Homarus gammarus) and brown crab (Cancer pagurus) than nearby rocky reefs. The mussel farm operations, however, contributed large amounts of living mussels and shell material to the seabed. Acoustic telemetry revealed that H.gammarus remained within the farm for between 2 and 283 days using both the farm anchors and areas of seabed dominated by fallen mussels for refuge. In contrast, C. pagurus movements showed no affinity to either the farm infrastructure or benthic habitat under the farm. Stable isotope analysis indicated a high dietary niche overlap in C. pagurus and H. gammarus (67.8 and 84.6 %) between the mussel farm (mixed muddy sediment) and nearby rocky reef. Our mixed-methods suggest that the mussel farm augments structural complexity on the seabed providing refuge and similar feeding opportunities for lobster and crab as their typical habitat on rocky reefs. Longline mussel farms can deliver profound biodiversity-positive effects through biogenic augmentation of degraded habitat for commercial species and potential for co-benefits to local fisheries.
