Abstract:A combined soil amendment was tested in microcosm experiments with an aim to enhance the aerobic biodegradation of propylene glycol (PG)-based aircraft de-icing fluids during and following the infiltration of contaminated snowmelt. A key objective under field conditions is to increase degradation of organic pollutants in the surface soil where higher microbial activity and plant rhizosphere effects may contribute to a more efficient biodegradation of PG, compared to subsoil ground layers, where electron acceptors and nutrients are often depleted. Microcosm experiments were set up in Petri dishes using 50 g of soil mixed with appropriate additives. The samples contained an initial de-icing fluid concentration of 10,000 mg/kg soil. A combined amendment using calcium peroxide, activated carbon and 1 x Hoagland solution resulted in significantly higher degradation rates for PG both at 4 and 22 degrees C. Most probable numbers of bacteria capable of utilizing 10,000 mg/kg de-icing fluid as a sole carbon source were about two orders of magnitude higher in the amended soil samples compared to unamended controls at both temperatures. The elevated numbers of such bacteria in surface soil may be a source of cells transported to the subsoil by snowmelt infiltration. The near-surface application of amendments tested here may enhance the growth of plants and plant roots in the contaminated area, as well as microbes to be found at greater depth, and hence increase the degradation of a contaminant plume present in the ground.

Abstract:The excessive use of herbicides had caused serious environmental pollution and ecological problems. Therefore, it is imperative to explore an effective method to reduce herbicide residues and pollution. In the present study, we used superabsorbent hydrogels coated 14C-acetochlor (SH-ACE) to investigate its behavior in different soils under oxic conditions. After 100 days, the mineralization by SH-ACE was increased by 2.3%, 2.5% and 3.3% in the red clay soils, fluvio-marine yellow loamy soils and coastal saline soils, respectively, compared to the control group. This result indicated that the SH-ACE treatment resulted in more complete degradation and detoxification of acetochlor. In addition, the dissipation rates of acetochlor were significantly faster in the SH-ACE treatment, which reduced the persistence of acetochlor. The probable degradation pathways of acetochlor involved dechlorination, hydroxylation, deethoxymethylation, and the formation of thioacetic acid derivatives in the two treatments, but the contents of transformation products were completely different. These findings suggest that the SH-ACE treatment has a significant effect to accelerate the degradation of acetochlor. When developing green pesticides, we emphasize that superabsorbent hydrogel coating treatment should be considered as a promising method for ecological safety in the environment.

Abstract:During snowmelt, the infiltration of large amounts of propylene glycol (PG), the major compound of many aircraft deicing fluids, affects redox processes and poses a contamination risk for the groundwater. To gain a better understanding about the degradation of PG and the associated biogeochemical processes under these conditions, we conducted saturated soil column experiments at 4 °C. During two successive PG pulses, we monitored the effect of the runway deicer formate (FO) and changing redox conditions on PG degradation. Furthermore, we applied first-order and simplified Monod kinetics to describe PG and FO transport. The transport of 50 mg l−1 PG showed three stages of microbial degradation, which were defined as lag phase, aerobic phase, and anaerobic phase. During the second pulse, lag effects diminished due to the already accomplished microbial adaption, and the initial degradation rate of PG increased. Degradation of PG was most efficient during aerobic conditions (aerobic phase), while the subsequent drop of the redox potential down to −300 mV decreased the degradation rate (anaerobic phase). Formate addition decreased the overall degradation of PG by 50 and 15 % during the first and second pulse, illustrating the inhibitory effect of FO on PG degradation. The concurrent increase of Fe(III), organic carbon, and the turbidity in the column effluent after PG and FO application suggest the combined export of Fe adsorbed to fragments of detached biofilm. Neither the first-order nor the simplified Monod model was able to reconstruct the dynamic breakthrough of 50 mg l−1 PG. The breakthrough of 1,000 mg l−1, however, was described reasonably well with first-order kinetics. At low temperature and high water saturation, the application of first-order degradation kinetics seems therefore appropriate to describe the transport of high concentrations of PG.

[Clinical usefulness of DeltaMELD to predict the survival of patients with liver cirrhosis].

Abstract:BACKGROUNDS/AIMS The change of MELD (Model for End-stage Liver Disease) score over time (DeltaMELD) has been proposed as a tool to predict the survival in cirrhotic patients. The aims of the study were to assess ability of the DeltaMELD to predict the survival and compare them with the initial MELD and CP score. METHODS MELD score was serially determined at least twice with more than two-month interval in 120 cirrhotic patients. We analyzed the clinical factors associated with the variation of MELD score. The predictive power of 6, 12 and 24 months mortality for DeltaMELD, initial MELD and CP score was compared by c-statistics. Patient survival was also compared at 6, 12 and 24 months according to the cut off values of DeltaMELD/month, initial MELD and CP score. RESULTS Increased MELD score was associated with biochemical and clinical parameters such as esophageal variceal bleeding and onset of hepatic encephalopathy. The area under receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve for DeltaMELD/month was 0.928 (P<0.001) compared with 0.575 for MELD score and 0.636 for CP score at 6 month-mortality; the area was 0.727, 0.594 and 0.657 at 12 month-mortality; 0.693, 0.587 and 0.639 at 24 month-mortality, respectively. The patients with DeltaMELD/month more than 1.0 had resulted in the higher mortality at 6, 12 and 24 months. The DeltaMELD/month was associated with mortality and was an independent prognostic predictor with a risk ratio of 1.679 (95% CI: 1.381-2.042, P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS Determination of DeltaMELD could be better prognostic predictor for patients with liver cirrhosis than initial MELD and CP score.
Enhanced Mineralization of Chlorpyrifos Bound Residues in Soil Through Inoculation of Two Synergistic Degrading Strains.

Abstract:Bioaugmentation methods are frequently employed for pesticide pollution remediation; however, it is not clear whether the introduced bacteria affect the pesticide bound residue (BRs) composition and whether the BRs can be catabolized by the introduced strains. This study aimed at answering these questions by using C-14-chlorpyrifos (C-14-CPF) and two CPF-degrading strains (Pseudomonas sp. DSP-1 and Cupriavidus sp. P2). The results showed that the BRs can be up to 83.0%, and that the CPF-BRs formed can be further transformed into (CO2)-C-14 by the strains. Indeed, the microbial inoculation can increase the CPF mineralization by 1.0-22.1 times and can decrease the BRs by up to similar to 50% of the control (on day 20). Compared with the control without bio-augmentation, microbial inoculation enhanced the release of BRs by 2.2-18.0 times. Adding biochar to the soil can greatly inhibit CPF mineralization and maintain the BR content at a relatively stable level. The CPF residue can affect the composition of the indigenous soil microbial community, but the introduction of bacteria for remediation did not have a significant effect. The results indicate that Pseudomonas sp. DSP-1 and Cupriavidus sp. P2 are useful for remediating both CPF extractable and bound residues.
Conductive Material and AHLs Addition Altered Soil Microbiome and Facilitated Γ-Hch Dechlorination but Inhibited CH4 Cumulation

Abstract:Soil microbiome is the cornerstone of sustaining soil ecosystem services and performs an array of vital soil functions. Manipulating soil microbiome is a promising strategy to regulate soil ecosystem function, however, the effect and underlying mechanism for chlorinated organic pollution remediation are limited and the capacity to simultaneously control multiple redox processes is still unclear. Here, the dynamics of the biocathode microbial community after separately or synchronously adding conductive material and acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL) were investigated from the perspectives of electron transfer and microbial assembly in γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (γ-HCH) polluted soil-based bioelectrochemical system. The resulting responses of NO3−/Fe(III)/SO42− reduction, γ-HCH dechlorination, and CH4 cumulation were also analyzed. Two conductive materials of biochar (BC) and magnetite nanoparticle (NaFe) and two AHLs including N-butanoyl homoserine lactone (C4-HSL) and 3-oxo-hexanoyl-homoserine lactone (3OC6-HSL) were applied. Exogenous additives facilitated γ-HCH dechlorination but alleviated and even inhibited CH4 cumulation, with BC plus C4-HSL addition as the optimum. Adding BC/NaFe enriched Fe(III)-reducing bacteria and dechlorinators and selectively transferred more electrons to those electron sinks; C4-HSL/3OC6-HSL helped to increase biofilm aggregation; while BC plus C4-HSL stimulated the growth of dominant functional taxa and enhanced the compact microbial correlations. These findings broaden our insights and provide approaches to managing soil microbiomes to solve actual environmental emergencies. It shows an advanced strategy to inhibit greenhouse gas (CH4) emission when COP reduction is facilitated to achieve win-win soil remediation.

Abstract:Introduction. The anti-icing materials (hereinafter - PGM), the use of which is necessary to ensure safety on the roads, enter into the soil during snow melting. In addition to the direct impact on human health, the use of PGM can affect it indirectly, worsening the state of environmental objects, including the state of the soil. According to the literature, the regular use of PGM along roads leads to the formation of man-made soil anomalies of high salt content, distributed along with the vertical and horizontal profiles. The high salt content causes an increase in the migration capacity of accompanying pollutants - heavy metals, translating them into mobile forms. The study of migration processes of toxicants is one of the hygienically significant tasks of regulation. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the total load of anti-icing materials on the soil. Material and methods. The effect of the solid PGM of the nitrate group, which consists of (NН2)2СO, Mg(NO3)2 and NH4NO3, was studied with varying degrees of stress on the upper root zone of sod-podzolic and urban soils to establish their absorptive capacity and salt migration to the underlying horizons in model experiment. Results. A significant amount of calcium cations (Ca2+) was established to be contained in aqueous filtrates as compared with the control. The process of calcium leaching occurs most intensively in the anthropogenically transformed urban soil, which is more susceptible to de-icing. Thus, it can be concluded the zonal (sod-podzolic) soil to have a greater accumulating capacity for the PGM components and low buffering activity in comparison with urban soil. Considering the specific features of soil processes under the influence of the PGM components, there is a danger of secondary pollution of groundwater. In this regard, the soil quality monitoring system should take into account an integrated approach, and preventive measures for the improvement of urban soil need to be planned, providing for the inevitability of the use of GMP in the winter to ensure road safety.
Enhanced retention of hydrophobic pesticides in subsurface soils using organic amendments

Abstract:The rapid global population growth since the early 2000s has significantly increased the demand for agricultural products, leading to widespread pesticide use, particularly organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs). This extensive application poses severe environmental risks by contaminating air, soil, and water resources. To protect groundwater quality, it is crucial to understand the transport and fate of these pesticides in soil and sediment. This study investigates the effects of hydrochars and biochars derived from sugar beet shreds (SBS) and Miscanthus×giganteus (MIS) on the retardation and biodegradation of OPPs in alluvial Danube sandy soil. The research is novel in its approach, isolating native OPP-degrading bacteria from natural alluvial sandy soil, inoculating them onto chars, and reapplying these bioaugmented chars to the same soil to enhance biodegradation and reduce pesticide leaching. The amendment of chars with immobilized Bacillus megaterium BD5 significantly increased bacterial abundance and activity. Metabarcoding of the 16S rRNA gene revealed a dominance of Proteobacteria (48.0-84.8 %) and Firmicutes (8.3-35.6 %). Transport modeling showed retardation coefficients (Rd) for OPPs ranging from 10 to 350, with biodegradation rates varying between 0.05 % and 75 %, indicating a positive correlation between retardation and biodegradation. The detection of biodegradation byproducts, including derivatives of phosphin, pyridine, and pyrazole, in the column leachate confirmed that biodegradation had occurred. Additionally, principal component analysis (PCA) revealed positive correlations among retardation, biodegradation, specific surface area (SSA), aldehyde/ketone groups, and bacterial count. These findings demonstrate the potential of biochar and hydrochar amendments to enhance OPP immobilization in contaminated soils, thereby reducing their leaching into groundwater. This study offers a comprehensive approach to the remediation of pesticide-contaminated soils, advancing both our fundamental understanding and the practical applications of environmental remediation techniques.
Application of Cold-Adaptive Pseudomonas Sp. SDR4 and Mortierella Alpina JDR7 Co-Immobilized on Maize Cob in Remediating PAH-contaminated Freeze-Thawed Soil

Abstract:There are large areas of contaminated soils with low- and medium-concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the coldest regions of the earth, potentially threatening ecological safety and human health. Using maize cobs (MC) as the carrier, two cold-adaptive PAHs-degrading microorganisms, bacterial (Pseudomonas sp., SDR4) and fungal (Mortierella alpine, JDR7) strains were co-immobilized. The degradation characteristics of phenanthrene (Phe), pyrene (Pyr) and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in freeze-thawed soil by both co-immobilized and free microorganism were studied. The removal rate of Phe, Pyr and BaP using the co-immobilized fungal-bacterial consortium within 60 d was 59.2±3.7%, 46.6±3.3%, and 36.8±2.7%, respectively, which was obviously higher than that of free fungal-bacterial consortium in the same time. Ten percent (w/w) was the optimal amount of inoculum for PAH degradation in the co-immobilized fungal-bacterial consortium. Under low-temperature conditions, when the initial concentration of PAH was between 10-100 mg•kg−1, the immobilized cold-adaptive fungal-bacterial consortium displayed the desired degradation of PAHs. The scanning electronic microscope (SEM) observation and mass transmission showed that the microstructure of co-immobilized mixed system was beneficial to the growth of SDR4 and JDR7 at low temperature. These results imply that the cold-adaptive fungal-bacterial consortium, co-immobilized on MC, has the potential for application in remediating PAH contaminated soil under the freeze-thawing environment.
Molecular approach to evaluate biostimulation of 1,2-dibromoethane in contaminated groundwater

Abstract:This study investigated the effect of co-substrate amendments on EDB biodegradation under aerobic conditions. Microcosms were established using contaminated soil and groundwater samples and maintained under in situ conditions to determine EDB degradation rates, and the diversity and abundance of EDB degrading indigenous bacteria. After 100days of incubation, between 25% and 56% of the initial EDB was degraded in the microcosms, with added jet fuel providing highest degradation rates (2.97±0.49yr(-1)). In all microcosms, the quantity of dehalogenase genes did not change significantly, while the number of BTEX monooxygenase and phenol hydroxylase genes increased with jet fuel amendments. These results indicate that EDB was not degraded by prior dehalogenation, but rather by cometabolism with adapted indigenous microorganisms. This is also reflected in the history of the plume, which originated from an aviation gasoline pipeline leak. This study suggests that biostimulation of EDB is possible at aerobic groundwater sites.
Application of xylene-degrading bacteria in the treatment of soil contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons – A comprehensive laboratory to pilot-scale analysis

Abstract:Petroleum hydrocarbons, including both aliphatic (gasoline, mineral oil) and aromatic compounds (BTEX), are known for their harmful effects on ecosystems and human health. Despite many studies, large-scale treatment of contaminated soils continues to be challenging, especially at lower temperatures. The use of metabolically-versatile, psychrotolerant, cold-active microorganisms, seems a promising, cost-effective and eco-friendly solution to boost remediation rates. In this study, a suitable microbial consortium was prepared and tested both in lab- and pilot-scale. To achieve the best bioremediation results, bacterial strains were isolated from BTEX-contaminated soil and then tested for the desired traits over a wide range of conditions. Of 5 preselected strains, 3 Pseudomonas strains capable of denitrification and aerobic/anaerobic degradation of hydrocarbons (up to 41.53±7.39 %), further characterized by a broad temperature (4–37 °C), pH (3–4 to 11) and salinity (0–8 %) tolerance, as well as resistance to freezing, were selected. Physiological studies were supported by genetic analyses, which indicated the presence of both alkB and xylM genes, and excluded similarity of the strains to the known opportunistic pathogens. To further confirm the applicability of the consortium, lab-scale analyses were followed by comprehensive pilot-scale tests on ~5 m 3 biopile/biocell, at different conditions. The results revealed increased efficacy of the consortium in bioremediation, when compared to biostimulated indigenous strains, for volatile hydrocarbons (93 % vs 88 %) and mineral oil (23 % vs 15 %), as well as 175 % and 136 % acceleration of remediation for the respective compounds in terms of time needed to complete the process. Moreover, the high survivability and metabolic activity of the consortium at different temperatures indicate the possibility of its year-round use for bioremediation of soil contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. The study proves the potential of specialized bacteria in the removal of pollutants, and emphasizes the role of bio-based strategies in addressing complex environmental challenges and remediation of contaminated sites.

Abstract:Abstract Purpose The study aimed to determine the effect of the addition of innovative combinations of organic-mineral mixtures obtained from biochar (BC), zeolite (Z), soil (S), poultry litter (PL), and slurry (SL) to post-flotation sediment (PFS) on (i) heavy metal mobility, (ii) heavy metal accumulation in willow, and (iii) PFS respiratory activity. Materials and methods The tests were carried out under laboratory conditions in containers with 500 g of PFS, to which 1% (w/w) of organic-mineral mixtures were added. Willow was grown for 90 days on substrates with the addition of organic and mineral mixtures. Results and discussion The addition of mixtures BC + Z + S + PL and BC + Z + S + SL to PFS significantly reduced the pH to, respectively, 7.12 and 7.02. This can be attributed to the release of the hydrogen load combined with organic anions deriving from the mineralisation of organic materials and the nitrification process. The addition of BC + Z and BC + Z + S mixtures to PFS reduced the content of Zn-H 2 O by 65%, Cd-H 2 O by 48%, and Ni-H 2 O by 30%. The addition of BC + Z + S + PL and BC + Z + S + PL mixtures to PFS increased the content of water-extracted Pb, respectively, 40 and over 60 times. The content of bioavailable heavy metals (extraction with 1 M NH 4 NO 3 ) in PFS was comparable in all treatments to which mixtures were added. Altered mobility of heavy metal ions may be associated with a change of substrate properties, including redox potential, pH value, as well as the introduction into the soil of materials with significantly developed sorption surfaces. In the first 2 weeks of incubation of mixtures with PFS, respiratory activity was very low, except for that in BC + Z + S + PL and BC + Z + S + SL treatments. In these treatments, oxygen consumption was more than 50 times higher compared to the control treatment and more than 10 times higher in relation to BC + Z and BC + Z + S treatments. Conclusions The mixtures of BC + Z and BC + Z + S effectively reduced the content of water-extracted heavy metals in PFS. BC + Z + S + PL and BC + Z + S + PL mixtures were not effective in reducing water-extracted mobile heavy metals in PFS. The introduction into PFS of mixtures partially composed of biologically unstable materials (PL, SL) increased the biochemical activity measured by respiratory activity and reduced biomass increment of willow aerial parts. The adverse response of willow to the introduction of mixtures with poultry litter or slurry into PFS indicates the need to verify the amount of these materials in the mixtures or to stabilise them by biological or thermal processes.

Abstract:Naturally occurring sulfide rich deposits are common along the northern Baltic Sea coast that when exposed to air, release large amounts of acid and metals into receiving water bodies. This causes severe environmental implications for agriculture, forestry, and building of infrastructure. In this study, we investigated the efficiency of ultrafine-grained calcium carbonate and peat (both separately and in combination) to mitigate acid and metal release. The experiments were carried out aerobically that mimicked summer conditions when the groundwater level is low and acid sulfate soils are exposed to oxygen, and anaerobically that is similar to autumn to spring conditions. The ultrafine-grained calcium carbonate dissipated well in the soil and its effect alone and when mixed with peat raised the pH and reduced pyrite dissolution while peat alone was similar to the controls and did not halt metal and acid release. High throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing identified populations most similar to characterized acidophiles in the control and peat treated incubations while the acidophilic like populations were altered in the calcium carbonate alone and calcium carbonate plus peat treated acid sulfate soils. Coupled with the geochemistry data, it was suggested that the acidophiles were inactivated by the high pH in the presence of calcium carbonate but catalyzed pyrite dissolution in the controls and peat incubations. In conclusion, the anaerobic conditions during winter would likely be sufficient to mitigate acid production and metal release from acid sulfate soils and in the summer, treatment with calcium carbonate was the best mitigation method.

Abstract:As an efficient method to remove contaminants from highly polluted sites, enzyme biodegradation addresses unresolved issues such as bioremediation inefficiency. In this study, the key enzymes involved in PAH degradation were brought together from different arctic strains for the biodegradation of highly contaminated soil. These enzymes were produced via a multi-culture of psychrophilic Pseudomonas and Rhodococcus strains. As a result of biosurfactant production, the removal of pyrene was sufficiently prompted by Alcanivorax borkumensis . The key enzymes (e.g., naphthalene dioxygenase, pyrene dioxygenase, catechol-2,3 dioxygenase, 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoate hydroxylase, protocatechuic acid 3,4-dioxygenase) obtained via multi-culture were characterized by tandem LC–MS/MS and kinetic studies. To simulate in situ application of produced enzyme solutions, pyrene- and dilbit-contaminated soil was bioremediated in soil columns and flask tests by injecting enzyme cocktails from the most promising consortia. The enzyme cocktail contained about 35.2 U/mg protein pyrene dioxygenase, 61.4 U/mg protein naphthalene dioxygenase, 56.5 U/mg protein catechol-2,3-dioxygenase, 6.1 U/mg protein 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoate hydroxylase, and 33.5 U/mg protein protocatechuic acid (P3,4D) 3,4-dioxygenase enzymes. It was found that after 6 weeks, the average pyrene removal values showed that the enzyme solution could be effective in the soil column system (80–85% degradation of pyrene).

Do phosphorus amendments enhance biodegradation activity in stalled petroleum hydrocarbon‐contaminated soil?

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) fertilizers promote soil petroleum‐hydrocarbon (PHC) bioremediation by correcting carbon‐to‐P ratio imbalances. While these inputs create conditions favorable to microbial growth, areas of a site or an entire site with low degradation rates (i.e., "stalled") occur for unknown reasons. We hypothesized that soil conditions limit P bioavailability, leading to stalls in PHC bioremediation, and adding the correct P amendment restarts microbial activity. Soils were collected and characterized from four cold calcareous PHC‐impacted sites in Saskatchewan, Canada, undergoing bioremediation. A generalized linear mixed model identified that regions with lower degradation rates possessed a neutral pH with high magnetic and salinity values. In a subsequent laboratory experiment, the proportion of benzene degraded at greater rates within active (i.e., higher degradation rates) than stalled soils, thereby following model predictions (p‐value = 0.19, Kruskal–Wallis). The PHC degradation efficiency of different P amendments was tested by doping stalled soils (n = 3) with one of five treatments: 0 (control), 0 (autoclaved control), or 50 mg phosphate kg−1 soil as sodium diphosphate, triethyl phosphate, or tripolyphosphate. Tripolyphosphate accelerated benzene degradation (75.5 ± 5.4%) in one stalled soil (Outlook 323) and increased degradation non‐significantly (43.9 ± 9.4%) in another (Allan 917). Alternatively, the final sample (Davidson 421) possessed the greatest benzene removal with no amendments. This implies that soil P bioavailability may not be the sole cause of decreased microbial activity. Accordingly, combining model outputs with mineralogy and microbiology investigations could enhance PHC biodegradation rates in these cold calcareous soils.

Abstract:In the context of sustainable development, potentially toxic element (PTE) contamination of soil and large-scale disposal of sludge are two major environmental issues that need to be addressed urgently. It is of great significance to develop efficient and green technologies to solve these problems simultaneously. This study investigated the effects of a 5% addition of thermally treated sludge residues (fermentation and pyrolysis residues) in synergy with L. perenne on soil organic matter, mineral nutrients, PTE speciation, and PTE uptake and transport by L. perenne in an e-waste-contaminated soil through pot experiments. The results showed that the thermally treated sludge residues significantly increased soil electrical conductivity, cation exchange capacity, organic matter, available phosphorus, and exchangeable potassium contents. New PTE-containing crystalline phases were detected, and dissolved humic substances were found. Sludge fermentation residue significantly increased dissolved organic matter content, whereas sludge pyrolysis residue showed no significant effect. The combination of thermally treated sludge residues and L. perenne increased the residual fractions of Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd. The thermally treated sludge residues promoted L. perenne growth, increasing fresh weight, plant height, and phosphorus and potassium uptake. The uptake of Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd by L. perenne was significantly reduced. This approach has the potential for applications in the ecological restoration of e-waste-contaminated soils.

Abstract:Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), one of the most frequently detected per - and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) occurring in soil, surface water, and groundwater near sites contaminated with aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), has proven to be recalcitrant to many destructive remedies, including chemical oxidation. We investigated the potential to utilize microbially mediated reduction (bioreduction) to degrade PFOS and other PFAS through addition of a known dehalogenating culture, WBC-2, to soil obtained from an AFFF-contaminated site. A substantial decrease in total mass of PFOS (soil and water) was observed in microcosms amended with WBC-2 and chlorinated volatile organic compound (cVOC) co-contaminants — 46.4 ± 11.0 % removal of PFOS over the 45-day experiment. In contrast, perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FTS) concentrations did not decrease in the same microcosms. The low or non-detectable concentrations of potential metabolites in full PFAS analyses, including after application of the total oxidizable precursor assay, indicated that defluorination occurred to non-fluorinated compounds or ultrashort-chain PFAS. Nevertheless, additional research on the metabolites and degradation pathways is needed. Population abundances of known dehalorespirers did not change with PFOS removal during the experiment, making their association with PFOS removal unclear. An increased abundance of sulfate reducers in the genus Desulfosporosinus (Firmicutes) and Sulfurospirillum (Campilobacterota) was observed with PFOS removal, most likely linked to initiation of biodegradation by desulfonation. These results have important implications for development of in situ bioremediation methods for PFAS and advancing knowledge of natural attenuation processes.

Abstract:This prospective cohort study compares 200 hospitalized, HIV-infected patients (Hispanic, African American, and white) from May 1992 to October 1998 to assess mortality (versus survival) over 75 months of follow-up. The relative risk of six-year mortality for each ethnic group is compared using Cox proportional hazards models after control- ling for sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, access to general medical care, and HIV-specific treatment. The median survival of Hispan- ics (15.5 months) was significantly (p < 0.05) shorter than that of whites (23.8); survival for African Americans (35.1) did not differ from whites. In multivariate analysis, the adjusted relative risk of six-year mortality for Hispanics compared with whites was 2.14 (95 percent confidence interval = 1.26-3.66). The poor outcomes of Hispanics was not explained by access to general care or by HIV-specific treatment.
