Abstract:The soil organic carbon (SOC) affects many soil processes and properties, and its accumulation is generally higher in soils under nitrogen-fixing tree species than under non-fixing ones. This chapter discusses the main drivers of decomposition and soil C stabilization, with particular attention to Eucalyptus spp. and Acacia mangium mixed plantations. Changes in nutrient cycling (especially N and P by litterfall) and litter quality affecting the activity of the decomposer communities are presented as well as improved management practices to overcome environmental restraint with biological resources. Although N deposition is high in pure and increases in mixed plantations with Acacia, this is not a guarantee of higher litter decomposition. Similarly, the high internal P recycling impairs the decomposition process by unfavorable stoichiometric ratios of its leaf litter. The complementarity in nutrient deposition (e.g., N and P deposition), in soil bacterial and fungi communities, and the segregation of fine root growth in the soil profile are favorable for C stabilization. However, no significant difference in the soil C stocks was detected for mixed plantations in relation to monocultures of Eucalypt. Better results are achieved by genetic manipulation, planting arrangements, and managing the harvest residue practices to improve soil fertility.

Abstract:Background and aimsSoil microbial-derived litter decomposition represents an important step in the global carbon and nutrient cycling and, at the local level, is primarily driven by litter chemistry. Here, we assessed how mixed-species plantations with Eucalyptus urograndis and Acacia mangium could be a key to enhancing litter production, decomposition, and soil microbial activity.MethodsThe relationships between litter decomposition and litter quality and quantity were compared among 6-year-old monocultures of E. urograndis and A. mangium (E100+N and A100, respectively) and a mixed plantation of both species (E50A50). Additionally, we evaluated soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and nitrogen (MBN), soil basal respiration (SBR), soil enzymes and the N mineralization potential.ResultsThe return to soil of N via litterfall in E50A50 was greater than E100+N, while the return of P in E100+N and E50A50 were higher than A100. The decomposition rate in A100 was slower than in the E50A50 and E100+N. The microbial activity, represented by soil enzyme activities (proteases and N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidases), was consistently higher in E50A50 than in A100.ConclusionThe E50A50 presented a more balanced supply of N and P associated to a better structural quality of the litter for microbial metabolism, with synergic reflections on decomposition rates and release of nitrogen.

Abstract:Functional traits of trees are significantly associated with their adaptation strategies and productivity. However, the effects of species composition and mixing proportion on the functional traits of trees grown in mixed plantations have not been studied extensively. In this study, planting experiments (duration about seven months) were used to study variations in functional traits and biomass allocation of Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook and Phoebe bournei (Hemsley) Yang seedlings in five different mixes (0C:4P, 1C:3P, 1C:1P, 3C:1P, and 4C:0P). Total leaf area per seedling increased in each species as its respective proportion in the mixture decreased. However, the specific leaf area decreased for P. bournei under low percent composition, and the specific leaf area for C. lanceolata differed only marginally among the plantings. The net photosynthetic rates of the two species were higher in the mixed plantings than in their corresponding monocultures, whereas the transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, and instantaneous water use efficiency were not different among the plantings. The average root length and root surface area of C. lanceolata and P. bournei were higher in the mixed plantings than in their monocultures. Specifically, root surface area of C. lanceolate and both root length and surface area of P. bournei increased significantly in the 1C:3P and 2C:2P mixed plantings. Leaf, stem, root, and total dry mass per seedling for C. lanceolata decreased with its increasing percent composition in the mixed plantings, while these variables varied less for P. bournei. The plasticity of biomass allocation was relatively low for both species. Total biomass per planting was higher in the mixed plantings than in the monocultures. Our study indicates that species composition and mixing proportion can considerably affect the functional traits of C. lanceolata and P. bournei. The increase in productivity in the mixed plantings may be partially attributed to low rates of competition between the two species, and future studies should examine the different interspecies relationships. The results of this study can be used to improve plantation productivity and ultimately increase the sustainability of tree products and help to better understand the adaptation strategies of plant coexistence.

Impact of mixed-species forest plantations on soil mycobiota community structure and diversity in the Congolese coastal plains

Abstract:Mixed tree plantations containing nitrogen (N 2 )-fixing species have the potential to enhance C sequestration, soil biodiversity and forest productivity. Here, we investigated the impact of Acacia mangium and Eucalyptus urophilla x E . grandis mixed plantations in the Congolese coastal plains on soil mycobiota community structure and diversity by ITS metabarcoding sequencing and bioinformatic analysis. Higher Faith's phylogenetic diversity and Evenness' was found in Eucalyptus monoculture relative to stands containing Acacia. Differences in beta diversity were found among Eucalyptus and Acacia monoculture, and mixed-species stands highlight the effects of plant species on fungal community structure. Ascomycota, Basidiomycota and Rozellomycota phyla were predominant in all stands, with both Dikarya (Ascomycota and Basidiomycota) accounting for more than 70% in all stands. Correlation analysis revealed that sulfur (S) was the most correlated soil attribute with the three predominant phyla but also with Mucoromycota and Calcarisporiellomycota phyla, although mostly negatively correlated (4 out of 5). Phosphorus was mostly positively correlated to soil attributes (3 out of 4) and nitrogen was correlated twice, positively and negatively. Distance-based redundancy analysis revealed a positive correlation of nitrogen (p-value = 0.0019, contribution = 22%) and phosphorus (p-value = 0.0017, contribution = 19%) with soil mycobiota. A high prevalence of generalists (28% to 38%) than specialists (9% to 24%) were found among the different sites. In stands containing Acacia (pure and mixed species) the soil mycobiota harbor the prevalence of generalist strategies with the potential to withstand environmental stresses and utilize a higher number of resources against specialists in Eucalyptus stands. Stronger positive correlation between soil attributes and main fungal taxa, higher generalists' strategies and lower Faith's phylogenetic diversity and Evenness were reported in stands containing Acacia. This highlights the potential of mixed-species in preserving community stability following environmental disturbances and increasing the number of resources confirming their important ecological role in boosting the resilience of the forest ecosystems to climate and land-use (plant species as shown by PCA analysis) changes.

Abstract:Soil extracellular enzymatic activity (EEA) and extracellular enzymatic stoichiometry (EES) within aggregates indicate variations in soil-nutrient effectiveness and the nutrient requirements of microorganisms. However, the responses of soil EEA and EES after introducing N2-fixing tree species into Eucalyptus plantations are poorly understood. Therefore, we examined soils from a 15-year-old pure Eucalyptus urophylla plantation (PP) and mixed E. urophylla and Acacia mangium plantation (MP) based on the theory of EEA and EES at the aggregate scale. Aggregates were separated into four fractions using a dry-sieving procedure: >2, 1–2, 0.25–1, and <0.25 mm. We measured the EEA of soil carbon (C)-, nitrogen (N)-, and phosphorus (P)-acquiring enzymes, and examined potential factors (soil physicochemical properties, microbial biomass, and litterfall [LF]) that may influence EEA and EES. Significantly higher (p < 0.05) EEA levels in all aggregates were found in MP than in PP. The average natural logarithmic ratio of C-, N-, and P-acquiring enzyme activities in our study was 1.44:1.21:1, which deviated from the global mean ratio of 1:1:1 and implied that soil microbes were limited by C and N. Moreover, the enzyme C:N ratio (EC:N), C:P ratio (EC:P), and vector length (VL) were markedly lower (p < 0.05) in bulk soil and most aggregates in MP compared to PP, suggesting that C limitation was more serious in PP than in MP. Furthermore, while the vector angle (VA) of bulk soil and four aggregate sizes were all <45° in both the PP and the MP, they were markedly higher (p 2 mm aggregate in MP than in PP. This indicated that mixing N2-fixing species with Eucalyptus alleviated but did not eliminate N limitation. Our study also found that nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N), total nitrogen (TN), and microbial biomass C:P ratio (MBC:MBP) were the main factors driving changes in EEA, while LF was a key factor controlling EES (p < 0.05). Overall, introducing N2-fixing species into the Eucalyptus plantation alleviated but did not eliminate C and N limitation. The results provide specific recommendations for soil-nutrient management in Eucalyptus plantations in subtropical China.

Abstract:Background and aimsMicrobial communities and their associated enzyme activities affect the quantity and chemical quality of carbon in soil. We aimed to evaluate the biochemical mechanisms underlying how N2-fixing species influences soil organic carbon chemical composition through soil microbial functional groups and enzyme activities.MethodsWe examined the effects of N2-fixing species mixed with Eucalyptus on soil carbon storage, and the chemical composition of an 8-year-old pure Eucalyptus urophylla plantation (PP) and a mixed E.urophylla and Acacia mangium plantation (MP).ResultsThe soil carbon stock and recalcitrant carbon chemical component significantly increased in surface soil in MP. The total PLFAs and bacterial PLFAs increased by 29.1% and 27.0% in cool-dry season, while in the warm-wet season, the total PLFAs and bacterial PLFAs increased by 13.1% and 27.3%, respectively. However, the fungal PLFAs decreased significantly in warm-wet season in MP. The total activity of the cellulose-degrading enzyme β-glucosidase was significantly greater with mixed N2-fixing species in both dry-cool and wet-warm season. The increase in the Alk-C/O-Alk-C ratio and SOC was strongly associated with both C-acquisition activity and bacterial community.ConclusionsOur findings highlight the importance of N2-fixing species in regulating both soil microbial communities and their functioning in association with soil extracellular enzyme activities, which contribute to the increased soil carbon storage and recalcitrant carbon composition in Eucalyptus plantations.

Abstract:Soil quality (SQ) pertains to the intricate and ongoing capacity of soil to function as a thriving ecosystem that supports the growth of plants and animals. However, there is a limited understanding of SQ assessment in mixed forest plantations. Therefore, we formulated and tested the hypothesis that the inclusion of a nitrogen-fixing tree species (such as Acacia mangium) improves SQ indicators in mixed treatments involving Eucalyptus trees. To evaluate the changes in SQ, we conducted a field experiment that employed the Soil Management Assessment Framework (SMAF) tool to analyze pure and mixed plantations of Eucalyptus grandis and A. mangium. Soil samples were collected at a depth of 0–20 cm from different treatments, including pure E. grandis without nitrogen fertilization (E), pure A. mangium (A), pure E. grandis with nitrogen fertilization (E + N), and mixed E. grandis and A. mangium (E + A). Sampling took place at 27 and 39 months after planting. We selected seven indicators of SQ: two biological indicators (soil microbial biomass carbon and β-glucosidase enzyme activity), four chemical indicators (soil organic carbon, pH, available phosphorus, and potassium), and one physical indicator (bulk density). By applying the SMAF tool, we determined the SQ scores for each indicator. The results revealed that E + A stands exhibited higher SMAF scores than pure stands, particularly in terms of pH (0.49 and 0.52 at 27 and 39 months, respectively) and phosphorus levels (0.84 and 0.82, at 27 and 39 months), respectively. Forest management practices and the sampling period had the most pronounced impact on biological and chemical indicators. Notably, significant positive correlations were observed between SMAF scores and pH, available phosphorus content, enzymes, soil organic carbon, and microbial biomass in both sampling periods. This study effectively provided novel information that introducing a nitrogen-fixing tree species in combination with eucalyptus trees enhances SQ, as indicated by the SMAF tool, which could reduce the need for external inputs (e.g., mineral fertilizers) by the farmers. Future studies should analyze the effects of A. mangium not only with other E. grandis varieties but also with other forestry essences.

Microbial Biomass and Activity at Various Soil Depths in a Brazilian Oxisol after Two Decades of No-Tillage and Conventional Tillage

Abstract:The advantages of no-tillage (NT) over conventional tillage (CT) systems in improving soil quality are generally accepted, resulting from benefits in soil physical, chemical and biological properties. However, most evaluations have only considered surface soil layers (maximum 0–30cm depth), and values have not been corrected to account for changes in soil bulk density. The objective of this study was to estimate a more realistic contribution of the NT to soil fertility, by evaluating C- and N-related soil parameters at the 0–60cm depth in a 20-year experiment established on an oxisol in southern Brazil, with a soybean (summer)/wheat (winter) crop succession under NT and CT. At full flowering of the soybean crop, soil samples were collected at depths of 0–5, 5–10, 10–20, 20–30, 30–40, 40–50 and 50–60cm. For the overall 0–60cm layer, correcting the values for soil bulk density, NT significantly increased the stocks of C (18%) and N (16%) and microbial biomass C (35%) and N (23%) (MB-C and -N) in comparison to CT. Microbial basal respiration and microbial quotient (qMic) were also significantly increased under NT. When compared with CT, NT resulted in gains of 0.8MgCha−1yr−1 (67% of which was in the 0–30cm layer) and 70kgNha−1yr−1 (73% in the 0–30cm layer). In the 0–5-cm layer, MB-C was 82% higher with NT than with CT; in addition, the 0–30cm layer accumulated 70% of the MB-C with NT, and 58% with CT. In comparison to CT, the NT system resulted in total inputs of microbial C and N estimated at 38kgCha−1yr−1 and 1.5kgNha−1yr−1, respectively. Apparently, N was the key nutrient limiting C and N stocks, and since adoption of NT resulted in a significant increase of N in soils which were deficient in N, efforts should be focused on increasing N inputs on NT systems.

Abstract:Summary Large trees in plantations generally produce more wood per unit of resource use than small trees. Two processes may account for this pattern: greater photosynthetic resource use efficiency or greater partitioning of carbon to wood production. We estimated gross primary production (GPP) at the individual scale by combining transpiration with photosynthetic water‐use efficiency of Eucalyptus trees. Aboveground production fluxes were estimated using allometric equations and modeled respiration; total belowground carbon fluxes (TBCF) were estimated by subtracting aboveground fluxes from GPP. Partitioning was estimated by dividing component fluxes by GPP. Dominant trees produced almost three times as much wood as suppressed trees. They used 25 ± 10% (mean ± SD) of their photosynthates for wood production, whereas suppressed trees only used 12 ± 2%. By contrast, dominant trees used 27 ± 19% of their photosynthate belowground, whereas suppressed trees used 58 ± 5%. Intermediate trees lay between these extremes. Photosynthetic water‐use efficiency of dominant trees was c. 13% greater than the efficiency of suppressed trees. Suppressed trees used more than twice as much of their photosynthate belowground and less than half as much aboveground compared with dominant trees. Differences in carbon partitioning were much greater than differences in GPP or photosynthetic water‐use efficiency.

The influence of mixed tree plantations on the nutrition of individual species: a review

Abstract:Productivity of tree plantations is a function of the supply, capture and efficiency of use of resources, as outlined in the Production Ecology Equation. Species interactions in mixed-species stands can influence each of these variables. The importance of resource-use efficiency in determining forest productivity has been clearly demonstrated in monocultures; however, substantial knowledge gaps remain for mixtures. This review examines how the physiology and morphology of a given species can vary depending on whether it grows in a mixture or monoculture. We outline how physiological and morphological shifts within species, resulting from interactions in mixtures, may influence the three variables of the Production Ecology Equation, with an emphasis on nutrient resources [nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P)]. These include (i) resource availability, including soil nutrient mineralization, N₂ fixation and litter decomposition; (ii) proportion of resources captured, resulting from shifts in spatial, temporal and chemical patterns of root dynamics; (iii) resource-use efficiency. We found that more than 50% of mixed-species studies report a shift to greater above-ground nutrient content of species grown in mixtures compared to monocultures, indicating an increase in the proportion of resources captured from a site. Secondly, a meta-analysis showed that foliar N concentrations significantly increased for a given species in a mixture containing N₂-fixing species, compared to a monoculture, suggesting higher rates of photosynthesis and greater resource-use efficiency. Significant shifts in N- and P-use efficiencies of a given species, when grown in a mixture compared to a monoculture, occurred in over 65% of studies where resource-use efficiency could be calculated. Such shifts can result from changes in canopy photosynthetic capacities, changes in carbon allocation or changes to foliar nutrient residence times of species in a mixture. We recommend that future research focus on individual species' changes, particularly with respect to resource-use efficiency (including nutrients, water and light), when trees are grown in mixtures compared to monocultures. A better understanding of processes responsible for changes to tree productivity in mixed-species tree plantations can improve species, and within-species, selection so that the long-term outcome of mixtures is more predictable.
Nitrogen-fixing trees in mixed forest systems regulate the ecology of fungal community and phosphorus cycling

Abstract:The fungal community plays an important role in forest ecosystems via the provision of resources to plant nutrition and productivity. However, the ecology of the fungal network and its relationship with phosphorus (P) dynamics remain poorly understood in mixed forest plantations. Here, we analyzed the fungal community using the amplicon sequencing in plantations of pure Eucalyptus grandis, with (E + N) and without N fertilization (E), besides pure Acacia mangium (A), and in a consortium of E. grandis and A. mangium (E + A), at 27 and 39 months after planting. We analyzed chemical, physical and biochemical soil and litter attributes related to P cycling, and the fungal community structure to find out if mixed plantations can increase fungal connections and to identify their role in the P dynamics in the soil-litter system. Soil organic fraction (OF), phosphorus in OF, total-P and acid phosphatase activity were significantly higher in E + A and A treatments regardless of the sampling period. Total N and P, richness, and Shannon diversity of the fungi in the litter was significantly higher in the treatments E + A and A. The fungal community structure in litter differed between treatments and sampling periods, and E + A showed an intermediate structure between the two pure treatments (E) and (A). E + A correlated highly with P dynamics when evaluated by both Pearson and redundancy analyses, particularly in the litter layer. Co-occurrence networks of fungal taxa became simpler in pure E. grandis plantations, whereas mixed system (E + A) showed a more connected and complex network. Our findings provide novel evidence that mixed forest plantations promote positive responses in the fungal community connections, which are closely related to P availability in the system, prominently in the litter layer. This indicates that the litter layer represents a specific niche to improve nutrient cycling by fungi in mixed forest ecosystems.

Abstract:BackgroundAfforestation of savannas in the Congolese coastal plains with eucalypt has provided wood pulp for industry and fuel energy for the local population. Typically, following afforestation, Acacia mangium are introduced to improve soil fertility and sustain productivity. Through investigations of particulate organic matter (POM), potential soil organic matter (SOM) quality was assessed in acacia and eucalypt plantations along rotations.MethodsNutrients in POM (4000–50 μm) in the 0–5 cm soil layer were measured after five years into the second rotation (R2Y5) in relation to soil pH and P availability. Data were compared to those at the end of the first 7-year-rotation (R1Y7) and after two years into the second rotation (R2Y2) to evaluate overall SOM quality in the topsoil.ResultsAt R2Y5, soil pH was higher in the pure eucalypt stands (100E) than in stands containing acacia, either in monoculture (100A) or evenly mixed with eucalypt (50A50E). Coarse POM (cPOM, 4000–250 μm) beneath 100A had the highest N concentration (1.71%), followed by those beneath 50A50E (1.42%) and 100E (1.30%). Higher N was always found in the stands containing acacia. Lower sulphur (S) concentrations and P availabilities were observed in cPOM (50A50E). The greatest amount of coarse (414.7 g) and fine (214.5 g) forest floor litter were found in 100A stands, whereas higher C concentrations were found in the 100E stands for coarse forest floor litter (36.5%) and in the 50A50E stands for fine forest floor litter (38.7%). The decrease in cPOM N and C concentrations were lower than 20% (R1Y7) and 26% (R2Y5) relative to the younger stage (R2Y2). This tendency was more pronounced in fine POM (250–50 μm) and organo-mineral fraction (< 50 μm).ConclusionsThe main changes occurred in cPOM beneath stands containing acacia while higher weight of forest floor litter was found in 100A. Soil pH decreased in stands containing acacia. Overall N and C dynamics was enhanced in older stands (R2Y5) than in the younger stands (R2Y2). This may reveal a creation of more labile SOM with lower N and C concentrations in POM fractions in the surface layer, i.e., an ecosystem with a lower potential to mitigate climate change along rotations.

Abstract:<p>Soil tillage influences early-growth, uniformity, and productivity of commercial forests. Best tillage practices for soils with constraints of compaction, drainage or shallow soils, all reducing the effective rooting-depth, are widely unknown for subtropical forest plantations in South America. The study aimed to quantify the effects of different tillage methods on breaking up and/or turning over the soil and on physical properties in three different soils, and relationships with early growth (up to 24 months of age) of clonal <em>Eucalyptus saligna</em> in southern Brazil. The tillage methods consisted of subsoiling to 50 cm plus rototilling, subsoiling to 50 cm plus ridging, and subsoiling to 70 cm plus rototilling. The soils were low-drainage Planosol, shallow sandy Regosol, and compacted clayey well-drained Nitisol. The dendrometric evaluations for initial growth show the best tillage method depended on soil type and dendrometric variable. Tree height is maximized by deep subsoiling (70 cm) in Nitisol, and by shallow subsoiling (50 cm) plus ridging in Regosol and Planosol. Tree diameter at breast height and basal area were maximized by shallow subsoiling with or without ridging in Planosol, deep subsoiling in Nitisol, and shallow subsoiling with ridging or with deep subsoiling in Regosol. When considering all the studied dendometric variables (tree height, diameter at breast height, and basal area), subsoiling plus ridging is recommend for low-drainage or shallow soils, whereas deep-subsoiling is necessary in clay soils.</p>

Abstract:Long-term and high-intensity application of inorganic fertilizer leads to a strong variation of soil characteristics. The changes in soil chemical and biological properties can significantly affect the yield of Eucalyptus plantation. However, the mechanism of soil chemical properties affecting wood volume mediated by biological factors is not clear. The purpose of this study was to identify which soil properties were affected by different fertilization intensities and to disentangle the dominant factors affecting Eucalyptus volume. After clear felling evergreen broad-leaved forest, a Eucalyptus plantation was established that was coppiced every 5 years and fertilized every year. Within this plantation, areas with different treatments were established. These treatments were a 5-year growth period (low); two times 5-year growth period (medium); and three times 5-year growth period (high). In each treatment area and in a nearby evergreen broad-leaved forest (EBLF Control), five sample plots per treatment were set up. Various biological and chemistry analyses (18 in total) were related to determining the most important path and index for optimizing Eucalyptus plantation. The analysis of variance of enzyme activity and microbial biomass showed that the soil biological characteristics decreased over 10 years of plantation, and the enzyme activity was close to the state of EBLF control in medium, while the microbial biomass failed to return to its original state during continuous planting. Redundancy analysis results show that there was a strong correlation in chemical indicators and biological characteristics. Partial least square structural equation model showed that total phosphorus, nitrate nitrogen, urease, catalase, and microbial biomass nitrogen and phosphorus were the most influential soil biochemical factors, and the indirect effect of chemical properties on volume was achieved by microorganisms through enzyme activity. Continuous planting and large-scale application of inorganic fertilizer would lead to a decrease in plantation yield and fertilizer utilization efficiency and would affect the microbial biomass and enzyme activity by destroying the stability of soil chemical properties.

Abstract:Two tropical forest trees ( Dalbergia odorifera T. Chen and Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg), cultivated both in pure or mixed planting systems under drought and nitrogen-applied conditions, were selected at seedling stages as experimental materials to investigate their eco-physiological responses, interactions with neighboring trees, and the stoichiometry of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P). The results highlighted significant differences in biomass allocation between D. odorifera , which allocates more to root growth, and H. brasiliensis , favoring stem growth. It demonstrates that mixed planting enhances tree growth under well-watered conditions, while nitrogen application promotes growth across different moisture levels, with species-specific responses. Water and nitrogen interaction notably affects H. brasiliensis growth but less so for D. odorifera , revealing complex effects on their biochemical responses to oxidative stress. The mixed planting benefits both species, influencing nutrient dynamics and stoichiometry in D. odorifera . The study also shows that nitrogen application under well-watered conditions alters nutrient ratios, particularly affecting nutrient availability and competition between species in mixed planting setups. In conclusion, this research emphasizes the complex interplay between planting patterns, water, and nitrogen, which significantly impacts tree growth, nutrient dynamics, and stress responses, suggesting that specific management strategies could optimize forestry practices.

Abstract:Mixed species forests are known to have a higher gross primary productivity (GPP) and net primary productivity (NPP) than forests containing only one single tree species. Trees growing in mixtures are characterized by higher autotrophic respiration (Ra), this results in a lower carbon use efficiency of mixed species forests compared to monocultures. The pathway responsible for the high quantities of carbon lost through respiratory pathways is still unclear. Here, we present the only existing measurements evaluating tree mixture effects based on stem CO2 efflux (Estem), scaled to woody respiration (Rw) on stand level. We conducted predawn Estem measurements on five tree species in an experimental tree plantation in Central Panama. Estem was scaled to the entire plot level woody respiration (Rw). Annual Rw was on average 0.25 ± 0.08 Mg C ha− 1 in the monocultures and 0.28 ± 0.10 Mg C ha− 1 in mixed species stands. In mixtures, annual Ra was more than three times higher than in monocultures. As mean Rw was almost constant across the mixture types and Ra varied largely, leads to the conclusion that mixed species plots allocate a higher amount of carbon toward respiratory processes in leaves and roots. This was supported by no significant differences in the mixture effects on the growth respiration relationship.

Abstract:In a global context where water will become a scarce resource under temperate latitudes, managing tree plantations with species associations, i.e., forest mixture or agroforestry, could play a major role in optimizing the sustainable use of this resource. Conceptual frameworks in community ecology suggest that, in mixed plantations, environmental resources such as water may be more efficiently used for carbon acquisition and tree growth thanks to niche complementarity among species. To test the hypotheses behind these conceptual frameworks, we estimated water-use efficiency (WUE) for poplar trees grown in a monoculture, in association with alder trees (forest mixture), and in association with clover leys (agroforestry) in an experimental plantation located in northeastern France. WUE was estimated (i) at leaf level through gas exchange measurements and analysis of carbon isotope composition, (ii) at wood level through carbon isotope composition, and (iii) at tree level with sap flow sensors and growth increment data. We hypothesized that species interactions would increase WUE of poplars in mixtures due to a reduction in competition and/or facilitation effects due to the presence of the N2-fixing species in mixtures. Poplar trees in both mixture types showed higher WUE than those in the monoculture. The differences we found in WUE between the monoculture and the agroforestry treatment were associated to differences in stomatal conductance and light-saturated net CO2 assimilation rate (at the leaf level) and transpiration (at the tree level), while the differences between the monoculture and the forest mixture were more likely due to differences in stomatal conductance at the leaf level and both transpiration and biomass accumulation at the tree level. Moreover, the more WUE was integrated in time (instantaneous gas exchanges < leaf life span < seasonal wood core < whole tree), the more the differences among treatments were marked.

Abstract:Integrated crop–livestock systems (ICLS) with fast-growing tree plantations are an environmentally sound approach for agricultural production. Soil carbon stocks can be increased under these systems, but there is no information on the relative contributions of the pasture and the trees in building soil C in tropical regions. This study aimed to investigate C storage, origin, and roots sequestration in the soil profile (1.0 m) in a pasture-forest system. The study was conducted in a 6-year-old ICLS in which Eucalyptus (C3) were introduced into a palisade grass pasture [Urochloa brizantha (Hochst. Ex A. Rich.) R. Webster 'Marandu', C4]. Samples were collected at four locations perpendicular to the Eucalyptus planting line: 0 (planting line), 2.0, 4.0, and 6.0 m (middle of the plot). A monoculture palisade grass pasture was included for comparison. The insertion of Eucalyptus in the pasture modified the quantity and distribution of grass above and belowground. Forage root and shoot biomass were lower in the integrated system compared to the monoculture pasture, mainly near Eucalyptus. However, plant C sequestration in the ICLS was 68% higher than in the monoculture pasture, due to the C accumulated by aboveground trees biomass. Overall, monoculture pasture had higher soil C4–C stocks at the 0–0.20 m depth, while integrated system with Eucalyptus stored more C3–C in deeper soil layers (0.60–1.0 m) near Eucalyptus. Soil C stock increased in both systems, but the contribution of Eucalyptus was deeper in the soil profile, while the grass contribution was greater in the upper 0.20 m soil layers.

Abstract:Many monoculture forests have been converted to mixed-species forests in Europe over the last decades. The main reasons for this conversion were probably to increase productivity, including timber production, and enhance other ecosystem services, such as conservation of biodiversity and other nature values. This study was done by synthesizing results from studies carried out in Dutch mixed forests compared with monoculture stands and evaluating them in the perspective of the current theory. Then we explored possible mechanisms of higher productivity in mixed stands, in relation to the combination of species, stand age and soil fertility, and discussed possible consequences of forest management. The study covered five two-species mixtures and their corresponding monoculture stands from using long-term permanent forest plots over multiple decades as well as two inventories (around 2003 and 2013) across the entire Netherlands. These forest plot data were used together with empirical models at total stand level, species level and tree level. Overyielding in Douglas-fir–beech and pine–oak mixtures was maintained over time, probably owing to the intensive thinning and was achieved on the poorer soils. However, this overyielding was not always driven by fast-growing light-demanding species. On individual tree level, intra-specific competition was not necessarily stronger than inter-specific competition and this competitive reduction was less seen at lower soil fertility and dependent on species mixtures. Moreover, size-asymmetric competition for light was more associated with tree basal area growth than size-symmetric competition for soil resources. Overall, this study suggests a substantial potential of species mixing for increasing productivity and implies developing forest management strategies to convert monospecific forests to mixed-species forests that consider the complementarity in resource acquisition of tree species.

Abstract:Key messagePlantations of two multipurpose legume species markedly differ in stand development and functioning. The sustainability of tree plantations can be inferred from their ecological strategies along the fast-slow economic spectrum.Growing plantations with native trees is crucial for ecosystem restoration and wood and non-wood product supply, but silvicultural guidelines are lacking. The growth, survival, biomass allocation, nutrient accumulation and nutrient use efficiency, 13C isotopic composition, canopy openness, and solar radiation in understory and grass cover were assessed in monoculture plantations of fast [Schizolobium parahyba var. amazonicum (Huber & Ducke) Barneby], and slow [Anadenanthera peregrina var. peregrina (L.) Speg] growing species in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Nine experimental plots per species and a stand density of 1111 trees ha−1 were examined 6 years after planting. The mean values of wood density were higher in A. peregrina than S. parahyba trees, with 0.66 g cm−3 and 0.27 g cm−3, respectively. S. parahyba trees showed 75% higher stem-wood biomass, with five times less leaf biomass than A. peregrina trees. However, contrasting diameter growth and survival rates resulted in comparable stand above-ground biomass between species. Macronutrient content and δ13C composition differences showed that S. parahyba exhibits higher nutrient use while A. peregrina has higher intrinsic water efficiency. Grass was abundant in the S. parahyba plantations and suppressed in the A. peregrina plantations, in line with the observed canopy openness and solar radiation in the understory. Functional traits allow the prediction of the contrasting silvicultural potentials of A. peregrina (wood production and microclimate recovery) and S. parahyba (timber production and agroforestry).
