Abstract:Using the example of the vampire motif origin and psychic function of the ghost-story in context of the pertaining historical situation are presented. A comparison to the development and function of night-mares is drawn.--The vampire motif in Europe originally developed at the end of the Middle Ages. As with the collective madness of witch persecution it was a superstition which was in fact supported by the church of this time. The belief in vampires was used for splitting of, projection and acting-out of taboo aggressive, oral and sexual drives. Although the era of Englightment quenched this superstition, the motif started to crop up in sublimated form: the vampire became a favourite motif in serious as in trivial literature of the 19th century. At first it can be seen as symbolic expression of rejected anxiety and guilt feelings of the bourgoisie after having thrown the absolutistic institution from power. In the course of the century the motif developed increasingly to an enciphered representation of sexuality perverted due to repression and rejection.--Our current social and literary life has now changed--also under the influence of Freuds work. The hypothesis is presented that meanwhile science fiction literature has become the successor of the ghost story, since it allows the preconscious presentation of contemporary anxiety and conflict and their rejection. Since fictions therefore can be viewed as a serious collective nightmare of the second half of the 20th century.

Abstract:Occasionally, chronic denervation is associated with enlargement rather than atrophy of muscle tissue. We studied seven patients with S-1 radiculopathy who developed ipsilateral enlargement of the calf. On the basis of results of calf muscle biopsies, it seems likely that the enlargement was due to muscle fiber hypertrophy and atrophy combined with an increase in connective tissue. Computed tomograms of the legs revealed no evidence of tumor. Surgical decompression of the involved S-1 nerve root had no obviously beneficial effect in reducing the calf enlargement. More information is needed to define the natural course of the calf enlargement and to clarify the pathophysiologic processes involved.
Malignant but not maleficent: acute leukaemia as a possible explanation of disease and death in vampire victims

Abstract:Background: A considerable amount of research has been put into the explanation of the origin of the vampire myth by focussing on possible symptoms of the vampire; however, very little attention has been given to the victims. Aims: To elucidate whether the myth of vampire victims follows the course of disease of acute leukaemia. Method: We studied three classical vampire novels published 1819-1897, focusing on 8 victims and their symptoms. The novels were chosen based on their iconic status in classic vampire literature, which defined the vampire genre and the symptoms of the victims for many years. The symptoms and course of disease following vampire attacks described in these novels were then compared with symptoms commonly seen in untreated acute leukaemia and other contemporary disorders. Results: The earliest novel (1819) did not provide a sufficient description of any symptoms in detail; however, the later novels (1872 and 1897) both provided elaborate portrayals of symptoms and course of the disease. The patients studied were all factitious-explaining the variation in symptoms; however, they share common features. One case, a young woman named Lucy Westenra, described by Bram Stoker, 1897, mirrors a textbook example of an acute leukaemia patient-despite being described before the time of common acknowledgment of the diagnosis. Conclusion: Victims in the gothic vampire novels from the nineteenth century could very likely be inspired by real-life acute leukaemia patients.

Abstract:Although some scholars in the 1970s and 1980s noted the frequent appearance of ghosts in early modern European society, only in the last fifteen years have ghosts received more systematic study and most synthetic works are products of the last five years. Beginning with a definition of “ghost” that considers the early modern context, this article examines ghostly apparitions in a wide variety of fields ranging from the history of crime, drama, and gender to the more expected realms of the history of death and demonology. It also describes how literary scholars have used the concept of the “spectral” or “ghostly” to deconstruct early modern genres and how folklorists have continued their traditional classifications of ghost stories and moved into interpretation of ghosts' generic and psychological roots. Following an analysis of the ghost’s role in modern understandings of demonology and witchcraft, this article concludes by arguing for the need to integrate manuscript, archival, and print material on ghosts and to attempt transnational and transconfessional analysis of European beliefs about apparitions.

Abstract:Pathogens represent a significant threat to human health leading to the emergence of strategies designed to help manage their negative impact. We examined how spiritual beliefs developed to explain and predict the devastating effects of pathogens and spread of infectious disease. Analysis of existing data in studies 1 and 2 suggests that moral vitalism (beliefs about spiritual forces of evil) is higher in geographical regions characterized by historical higher levels of pathogens. Furthermore, drawing on a sample of 3140 participants from 28 countries in study 3, we found that historical higher levels of pathogens were associated with stronger endorsement of moral vitalistic beliefs. Furthermore, endorsement of moral vitalistic beliefs statistically mediated the previously reported relationship between pathogen prevalence and conservative ideologies, suggesting these beliefs reinforce behavioural strategies which function to prevent infection. We conclude that moral vitalism may be adaptive: by emphasizing concerns over contagion, it provided an explanatory model that enabled human groups to reduce rates of contagious disease.
Growth, Inequality, and Poverty in Rural China: The Role of Public Investments

Abstract:In the past two decades, China has achieved world renown for reducing rural poverty. However, it is becoming harder to reduce poverty and inequality further in China, even though its economy continues to grow. This report compares the impact specific rural public investments can have on promoting growth and reducing poverty and inequality. Returns to these investments are calculated for the nation as a whole and for three economic zones in the west, central, and coastal regions of the country. Government expenditures that have the highest impact on poverty and growth include education, agricultural research and development, and rural infrastructure (roads, electricity, and telecommunications). Notably, spending on irrigation and anti-poverty loans had minimal impact. The report discusses the implications of these findings for setting future priorities for government investment. It also suggests avenues for future research and calls for a better understanding of how to improve the effectiveness of public resources. This report will be of interest to professionals involved in rural poverty reduction, rural development, agricultural growth, food security, and public investment policy.

Abstract:The last decades have witnessed an increased interest in the research of territorial delimitations in late medieval and early modern Europe. A significant part of the academic debate has been focused on identifying and defining the process of transition from medieval frontiers, perceived as vague areas of contact, to modern linear borders. The aim of this article is to analyse the organization of the western confines of the Transylvanian Principality during the decades in which this state was formed, from the Ottoman conquest of Buda (1541) until the ratification of the Speyer Peace Treaty (1571). Throughout this period, the territorial delimitation of Transylvania from the Ottoman Empire and Habsburg Hungary was an ongoing process, marked by both military confrontations and diplomatic negotiations. Through a critical reassessment of the most relevant Romanian and Hungarian literature on this complex subject and the analysis of new data from official and narrative contemporary sources, I have tried to identify which were the most important political and military events that shaped the western borderlands of Transylvania. A fundamental objective of my research is to provide an accurate definition for the western region of the Transylvanian Principality, contributing thus to the general debate on the nature of frontiers/borders in sixteenth century Europe.

Abstract:My subtitle is shamelessly stolen from an article in the popular Victorian periodical Every Saturday, entitled "Spirit Circles, and How to Move in Them." The article lightheartedly satirizes a situation many readers would have known, either through personal experience or through report that of the seance-room. The writer invites readers to share in his joke against the spiritualists found in such seances: through the credulity of their audiences, ambitious mediums gain entrance to the drawing-rooms of the undiscriminating, and thus a foothold in polite society. Spiritualism was popular with writers of all kinds in the late nineteenth century, finding its way into fictional as well as journalistic representations. It lent itself to dramatic plot devices and unlikely revelations; its more elevated manifestations allowed metaphysical speculation on themes of identity, truth, faith, and reporting. Both of these strands are present in one of the best examples of this trend, Bram Stoker's 1897 Dracula, which we will examine later in this essay. From its beginnings in a small town outside New York in 1848, spiritualism crossed continents and oceans to become a wide-ranging cultural and intellectual phenomenon.1 It encompassed all levels of society, from the drab parlours of industrial towns to the grand salons of Englands stateliest homes; it appeared in different contexts, acceptable in family circles and in public theatres. Estimates concerning the number of spiritualisms adherents varied from thousands to millions, and articles on the topic appeared with startling frequency in the national press until well into the twentieth century (see Poole). Abstract:In the mid-1870s, a wave of popular urban hauntings in public spaces swept across Europe. These included sightings of the Park Ghost in Sheffield in 1873 and the Westminster Christ Church Ghost in London in 1874. In early December 1874, probably the most famous Czech ghost, the Podskalí Apparition (Podskalské strašidlo), was born. This haunting was followed by that of similar but less popular ghosts that appeared in industrial, working-class Prague neighborhoods in 1876 and 1907, respectively. This paper analyzes newspaper articles from this period about these apparitions and their later depictions in Czech popular culture, and interprets these phenomena as local variants of the so-called “prowling ghosts”, a particular type of suburban phantom documented by current historiographical research on 19th-century ghostlore in England. The paper then describes how these Prague ghosts were utilized socially by two completely different cultural practices. On one hand, these hauntings were used by working-class people as vernacular spectacles and improvised festivities related to pranks, the symbolic occupation of public space, and Czech nationalism. For the middle classes and period newspapers loyal to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, on the other hand, unruly mobs converging on the sites of supposed hauntings were a threat to established social norms and triggered both moral panics and public scorn of these “ghost hunters”. However, this attitude changed quickly when these events entered popular culture in the form of popular songs and, later, memoirs and literature. Between the Belle Époque at the First World War, these famous Prague hauntings were the staple for nostalgic longing in the last few decades of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Abstract:Debates about emerging infectious diseases often oppose natural conceptions of zoonotic reservoirs with cultural practices bringing humans into contact with animals. This article compares the representations of cross-species pathogens at ontological levels below the opposition between nature and culture. It describes the perceptions of distinctions between interiority and physicality, between wild and domestic, and between sick and dead in three different contexts where human societies manage animal diseases: Australia, Laos and Mongolia. Our article also argues that zoonotic pathogens are one of the entities mobilized by local knowledge to attenuate troubles in ordinary relations with animals, and shows that the conservation of cultural heritage is a tool of mitigation for infectious diseases emerging in animal reservoirs.

Abstract:Throughout centuries, policies of states in the Western Balkan region were largely shaped in accordance with the infection outbreaks and consequences of plague epidemics. Austrian policy was not out of the line in this context, so the general aspects of dealing in organisation of military border with the Ottoman Empire were always crucially connected with the reactions towards epidemics. Especially in the 16th and 17th centuries, Austria battled hard to stop expansion of epidemics that during those times mainly fluxed in from the side of the Ottoman Empire. The decisive change came in the 18th century. During this period, the Austrian reaction to plague outbursts at the area of south-eastern Europe was already a product of general rise of sanitary standards in western European regions, where attempts for implementation of some of newest qualities in perception of the quarantine requirements and medicine applications met with complex aspects of life in a turbulent area of military border. Efficiency of measures was instant and sustainable in the long term.
Ghosts - or the (Nearly) Invisible : Spectral Phenomena in Literature and the Media

Abstract:It is well known that ghosts as well as supernatural phenomena and creatures in general were of great importance to medieval minds. Thus, it is no wonder that much of the literature of the Middle Ages is ripe with references to monsters, phantoms, miraculous characters and the like, from Beowulf ’s Grendel to the Lady of the Lake to visions of the dead. Focussing on the latter category, it is the aim of this paper to analyse a collection of ghost stories written down in the early years of the fifteenth century at Byland Abbey in Yorkshire. The first part traces the evolution of medieval perceptions of the dead found both in doctrinal teachings as well as in more popular ideas, including a consideration of the role of Purgatory in this development and the functions ghost stories could perform. In the second part of the paper, the Byland stories are analysed and compared to the notions described in the first part. It is concluded that these tales relate to both ‘official’ Christian concepts of the dead as well as to the rather more popular notion of the draugar found in Scandinavian folklore. This combination means that the stories are ideal for a possible use as exempla in confessions or sermons. Stories of ghosts are widespread in the later Middle Ages. The following excerpt is from a collection of narratives written down in the early years of the fifteenth century at Byland Abbey in Yorkshire:1 Concerning a certain ghost in another place who, being conjured confessed that he was severely punished because being the hired servant of a certain householder he stole his master’s corn and gave it to his oxen that they might look fat; [...] and he said there were fifteen spirits in one place severely punished for sins like his own which they had committed. He begged his conjuror therefore to ask his master for pardon and absolution so that he might obtain the suitable remedy. (Story VII, trans. Grant 371)2 The writer of this story tells us about a living man encountering a dead servant who asks him for help in escaping the punishments he suffers for the sins he had committed. Abstract:<span>Screen vampires define themselves through dominant or subliminal variations on the loss of, and desire for, fertility. Taking the gender-fluid figure of Dracula from Bram Stoker to the 2020 Netflix series as prototypical of traditional vampirism, it will be argued that while simulating youth, beauty and menstruation through biting and sucking, the Count defaults to a state of dehydrated infertility. As male-female shape-shifters, Dracula and the vampire more generally present as regressive constructs of the feminine. They return us to romantic ideals of the youth-desire equation, signifying both its ubiquity and the terror of its passing. As bodies unable to generate their own blood yet craving the bleeding of others, vampires harness the irrational fear of female ageing. They are, in effect, politically symbolic spectres of postmenopausal anxiety.</span>
An Epidemic for Sale: Observation, Modification, and Commercial Circulation of the Danysz Virus, 1890-1910

Abstract:This essay tells the story of the "Danysz virus," a bacterial culture that was designed and deployed to cause epidemics among rodents and was sold globally by the Institut Pasteur from 1900. Jean Danysz (1860-1928) initially identified the culture during his studies of epidemics in population cycles of common voles. His experiments turned to the ambitious goal of increasing the bacteria's virulence by emulating the rodent's animal economy in the laboratory in order to mass-produce a culture. The bacterial culture was supposed to bring about a man-made epidemic for sale on the global pest- and plague-control market. The essay considers the Danysz virus as a "cognitive good" and analyzes the material as well as intellectual transfers that shaped its development, supported its international application, and prompted the experimental testing of its promises. While the culture largely failed to bring about the exponential growth of lethal infections in rat populations Danysz promised, the virus did succeed in distributing his theoretical revision of virulence. Through its commercial distribution, his product recast virulence as a function of the relation between bacteria and their milieu and offered a novel concept of mutual pathogenicity that far exceeded deterministic models of infection prevalent at the time.

Abstract:Remote Access Laboratories have been successfully installed around the world enabling students to practice practical skills and develop their knowledge through experimentation. Remote laboratories have the advantage of being accessible from anywhere anytime allowing users more flexibility and mobility. Typically installations are designed to resolve issues of access or utilization. Clear pedagogical design is now seen as a critical development in the instigation of new experiments, and access systems. This paper examines existing system designs, using a Program Logic analysis to identify key inputs, outputs, and impacts for the creation of systems. It aims to identify commonalities, or differentiation with respect to the original goals. Through this analysis it was identified that many RAL systems implement direct mimic user interface design focusing on individual access to a kinesthetic learning experience. Learning design is also typically implemented by the system and experiment designers, potentially reducing the impact of the system or activity usability.

Abstract:This paper aims to enhance our knowledge about late-medieval epidemic outbreaks in specific parts of Eastern Central Europe. The first part on modern-day Eastern Germany discusses narrative evidence and its use in the current research on plague history, before bringing in municipal records on testaments and conveyances from Görlitz and Stralsund for the reconstruction of seasonality and mortality rates, as well as funeral inscriptions and pictorial evidence from Erfurt as indirect indicators of plague waves. After a brief discussion of the scarce narrative sources, the second part of the paper concerning Bohemia works with the evidence of the Libri Confirmationum, a source originating from the chancellery of the archbishops of Prague. Every new appointment to a benefice was supposed to be approved by one of the vicars general of the archbishop, and this confirmation usually gives the reason for the vacancy. Expanding on Eduard Maur’s research, death statistics and their frequency are analyzed statistically. The paper provides insight into new evidence for the reconstruction of plague waves, mortality rates and seasonality, and thereby highlights the characteristics of the plague in Eastern Central Europe.
Metaphysics, Function and the Engineering of Life: the Problem of Vitalism

Abstract:Vitalism was long viewed as the most grotesque view in biological theory: appeals to a mysterious life-force, Romantic insistence on the autonomy of life, or worse, a metaphysics of an entirely living universe. In the early twentieth century, attempts were made to present a revised, lighter version that was not weighted down by revisionary metaphysics: "organicism". And mainstream philosophers of science criticized Driesch and Bergson's "neovitalism" as a too-strong ontological commitment to the existence of certain entities or "forces", over and above the system of causal relations studied by mechanistic science, rejecting the weaker form, organicism, as well. But there has been some significant scholarly "push-back" against this orthodox attitude, notably pointing to the 18th-century Montpellier vitalists to show that there are different historical forms of vitalism, including how they relate to mainstream scientific practice (Wolfe and Normandin, eds. 2013). Additionally, some trends in recent biology that run counter to genetic reductionism and the informational model of the gene present themselves as organicist (Gilbert and Sarkar 2000, Moreno and Mossio 2015). Here, we examine some cases of vitalism in the twentieth century and today, not just as a historical form but as a significant metaphysical and scientific model. We argue for vitalism's conceptual originality without either reducing it to mainstream models of science or presenting it as an alternate model of science, by focusing on historical forms of vitalism, logical empiricist critiques thereof and the impact of synthetic biology on current (re-) theorizing of vitalism.

Abstract:Exorbitant Enlightenment offers new ways to think about eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century literature and culture. It brings into focus a constellation of relatively unknown, pre-1790s Anglo-German relations in Britain, many of which are so radical—so exorbitant—that they ask us to fundamentally rethink the way we do literary and intellectual history, especially when it comes to Enlightenment and Romanticism. This polyglot book delivers two of the great, untold stories of the eighteenth century. The first story uncovers a forgotten Anglo-German network of thought and writing in Britain between 1700 and 1790. From this Anglo-German context emerges the second story: a set of radical figures and institutions that are exorbitant , they leave the specified tracks of literary history and present us with a literary history that explodes the difference between the Enlightenment and Romanticism. These figures and institutions include the Moravians in 1750s London, Henry Fuseli (1741–25), and Johann Caspar Lavater (1741–1801), but also the two most radical, notorious, and most exorbitant figures: William Blake (1757–1827) and Johann Georg Hamann (1730–88). Over eight comparative chapters, the book presents a constellation of case studies that show how these figures and institutions shake up our common understanding of British literary and European intellectual history.
