Abstract:Catalytic conversion of CO 2 into chemicals and fuels is a viable method to reduce carbon emissions and achieve carbon neutrality. Through thermal catalysis, electrocatalysis, and photo(electro)catalysis, CO 2 can be converted into a wide range of valuable products, including CO, formic acid, methanol, methane, ethanol, acetic acid, propanol, light olefins, aromatics, and gasoline, as well as fine chemicals. In this mini-review, we summarize the recent progress in heterogeneous catalysis for CO 2 conversion into chemicals and fuels and highlight some representative studies of different conversion routes. The structure–performance correlations of typical catalytic materials used for the CO 2 conversion reactions have been revealed by combining advanced in situ/operando spectroscopy and microscopy characterizations and density functional theory calculations. Abstract:Chemical conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into high-value chemicals or fuels is exceedingly attractive due to its green and sustainable features. However, practical technologies on scale utilisation of CO2 is few, and nearly no new industrial processes on the topic emerge over the years. The current bottlenecks e.g. low efficiency and atom economy seriously restrict the process development. In recent studies, catalytic activation of CO2 and/or substrate is revealed to play a significant role in promotion of CO2 functionalization to valuable chemicals including representative reactions of epoxides/propargyl alcohols/propargylamines with CO2, multi-component cascade reactions, N-formylation of amines with CO2 and hydrosilanes, and unactivated C-H bond carboxylation. Herein, recent significant advances (2017-2022) on effective chemical fixation of CO2 through molecular activation or synergistic activation strategies in homogeneous systems are overviewed. The superiority of molecular activation in thermochemical catalysis is shown in a wide range of CO2 transformations. Through CO2/substrate activation and catalysis with the well-developed metal or organocatalysts, the valuable chemicals are successfully attained in great efficiency. The new progress will provide significant guidance to promote the effective and sustainable utilisation of CO2.

Abstract:The use of fossil fuels leads to significant CO2 emissions, thus highlighting the importance for investigating the utilization of CO2 for generating high-value chemical products toward achieving the dual-carbon goal. CO2 can be efficiently used in synthesizing valuable organic compounds through C-C, C-O, C-H, and C-N bond construction, with reduction technologies effectively converting CO2 to organic carbon sources. Therefore, the research in developing environmentally friendly catalysts for efficient and renewable CO2 conversion holds great importance. New materials for catalytic conversion include zeolites, activated carbon, graphene, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), ionic liquids, semiconducting photocatalysts, single-atom catalysts (SACs), and dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs). The proper research and use of these materials can aid in the quest to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate climate change. This Review focuses on the utilization of single-atom catalysts (SACs), ionic liquids (ILs), dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs), and carbene-metal catalytic systems in CO2 conversion. The potential for new materials in catalyzing the conversion of CO2 is examined by analyzing various common chemical carbon sequestration methods, ultimately providing possible research directions for effective solutions to climate and environmental pollution problems. On the basis of the high reaction rate and high treatment efficiency of the catalyst for the catalytic conversion of CO2, the Review focuses on the simpler and more economical synthesis method of the catalyst itself and the wider application prospects.

Abstract:The worldwide unrestrained emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) has caused serious environmental pollution and climate change issues. For the sustainable development of human civilization, it is very desirable to convert CO2 to renewable fuels through clean and economical chemical processes. Recently, electrocatalytic CO2 conversion is regarded as a prospective pathway for the recycling of carbon resource and the generation of sustainable fuels. In this review, recent research advances in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction are summarized from both experimental and theoretical aspects. The referred electrocatalysts are divided into different classes, including metal-organic complexes, metals, metal alloys, inorganic metal compounds and carbon-based metal-free nanomaterials. Moreover, the selective formation processes of different reductive products, such as formic acid/formate (HCOOH/HCOO-), monoxide carbon (CO), formaldehyde (HCHO), methane (CH4), ethylene (C2H4), methanol (CH3OH), ethanol (CH3CH2OH), etc. are introduced in detail, respectively. Owing to the limited energy efficiency, unmanageable selectivity, low stability, and indeterminate mechanisms of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction, there are still many tough challenges need to be addressed. In view of this, the current research trends to overcome these obstacles in CO2 electroreduction field are summarized. We expect that this review will provide new insights into the further technique development and practical applications of CO2 electroreduction.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of CO2 to renewable fuels and green chemicals is a promising approach to utilize the large amount of CO2 generated from fossil fuels. The selectivity of targeted products is a critical parameter for effective CO2 conversion. However, the uncontrollable C-C coupling limits the selectivity of the desired products. This review focuses on recent advancements in CO2 hydrogenation over zeolite-based catalysts, with an emphasis on the selectivity of targeted products, such as methanol, olefins, and C5+ products. The role of zeolite properties, such as topology, acid sites, and metal-zeolite interactions, in determining product selectivity is comprehensively reviewed. Abstract:Photocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction (CO2R) technology towards carbon neutrality is a green and sustainable method to produce carbonous feedstocks (e.g., methane, ethanol, acetic acid). However, the relatively low CO2R efficiency and unsatisfactory selectivity towards target products hinder its scale-up implementation. Photocatalysts and operating conditions are pivotal in tuning the catalytic environment and governing CO2R activity. Herein, the photocatalytic CO2R mechanism and conversion pathways for main C1/C2/C3 products are elaborated. Then, the recent advances in promoting CO2 photoreduction efficiency and selectivity are summarized and discussed, paying special attention to the catalyst design approaches (defect design and interfacing engineering), as well as the operating conditions (e.g., light intensity and wavelength, pH, CO2 pressure/concentration, solvent volume, dissolved oxygen, and coexisting ions) which directly affect the catalytic environment. Future researches on photocatalytic CO2R are proposed in terms of efficient catalyst design, intrinsic transformation mechanism, and sustainable application-oriented CO2R technologies. The insights obtained will advance our mechanistic understanding of regulating CO2R pathways, and help drive the adoption of sustainable and highly efficient strategies for producing desired products.

Abstract:Carbon‐based catalysts have shown great promise for tuning reaction pathways and the local reaction environment for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction, offering effective solutions to steer valuable multicarbon product evolution. This review provides critical insights and perspectives on design principles, catalytic mechanisms, and future research directions to inspire the rational design of advanced carbon materials for converting CO2 into value‐added feedstocks. Electrochemical CO2 reduction offers a compelling route to mitigate atmospheric CO2 concentration and store intermittent renewable energy in chemical bonds. Beyond C1, C2+ feedstocks are more desirable due to their higher energy density and more significant market need. However, the CO2‐to‐C2+ reduction suffers from significant barriers of CC coupling and complex reaction pathways. Due to remarkable tunability over morphology/pore architecture along with great feasibility of functionalization to modify the electronic and geometric structures, carbon materials, serving as active components, supports, and promoters, provide exciting opportunities to tune both the adsorption properties of intermediates and the local reaction environment for the CO2 reduction, offering effective solutions to enable CC coupling and steer C2+ evolution. However, general design principles remain ambiguous, causing an impediment to rational catalyst refinement and application thrusts. This review clarifies insightful design principles for advancing carbon materials. First, the current performance status and challenges are discussed and effective strategies are outlined to promote C2+ evolution. Further, the correlation between the composition, structure, and morphology of carbon catalysts and their catalytic behavior is elucidated to establish catalytic mechanisms and critical factors determining C2+ performance. Finally, future research directions and strategies are envisioned to inspire revolutionary advancements.

Abstract:The conversion of CO2 into fuels and useful chemicals has been intensively pursued for renewable, sustainable and green energy. However, due to the negative adiabatic electron affinity (EA) and large ionization potential (IP), the CO2 molecule is chemically inert, thus making the conversion difficult under normal conditions. Novel catalysts, which have high stability, superior efficiency and low cost, are urgently needed to facilitate the conversion. As the first step to design such catalysts, understanding the mechanisms involved in CO2 conversion is absolutely indispensable. In this review, we have summarized the recent theoretical progress in mechanistic studies based on density functional theory, kinetic Monte Carlo simulation, and microkinetics modeling. We focus on reaction channels, intermediate products, the key factors determining the conversion of CO2 in solid-gas interface thermocatalytic reduction and solid-liquid interface electrocatalytic reduction. Furthermore, we have proposed some possible strategies for improving CO2 electrocatalysis and also discussed the challenges in theory, model construction, and future research directions.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the most promising technologies available to mitigate environmental problems introduced by the continuous increase in its concentration that has occurred since the industrial revolution. This technology also is attractive from the viewpoint that it can be based on carbon-neutral energy by converting CO2 into fuels and value-added chemicals using solar or other forms of renewable energy. In this review, fundamental concepts related to electrocatalysis, the electrical double layer, physical and chemical properties of CO2, the interaction of CO2 with electrode surfaces, and the sources of carbon and proton that underpin this technology are provided. Insights into recent mechanisms proposed for the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 also are provided along with a survey of progress in the rational design of new electrocatalysts. Discussion on achievements in the field is focused on the variation in products formed by different electrocatalysts and the design strategies that have been introduced to alter the electronic and geometric properties of the electrocatalysts. Finally, recommendations for achieving further advances in electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 in a systematic manner are presented.

Abstract:Processes for the conversion of CO2 to valuable chemicals are highly desired as a result of the increasing CO2 levels in the atmosphere and the subsequent elevating global temperature. However, CO2 is thermodynamically and kinetically inert to transformation and, therefore, many efforts were made in the last few decades. Reformation/hydrogenation of CO2 is widely used as a means to access valuable products such as acetic acids, CH4, CH3OH, and CO. The electrochemical reduction of CO2 using hetero- and homogeneous catalysts recently attracted much attention. In particular, molecular CO2 reduction catalysts were widely studied using transition-metal complexes modified with various ligands to understand the relationship between various catalytic properties and the coordination spheres above the metal centers. Concurrently, the coupling of CO2 with various electrophiles under homogeneous conditions is also considered an important approach for recycling CO2 as a renewable C-1 substrate in the chemical industry. This review summarizes some recent advances in the conversion of CO2 into valuable chemicals with particular focus on the metal-catalyzed reductive conversion and functionalization of CO2.

Abstract:Catalytic CO2 conversion to clean fuels and chemicals is crucial for mitigating the climate change and reducing the dependence on nonrenewable energy resources. Converting CO2 by hydrogenation using heterogeneous catalysts has been extensively studied in the past decades, and the products distribution can be manipulated by selecting catalysts and reaction conditions. Generally, CO2 conversion to hydrocarbons and to alcohols are the two routes that have been explored the most, and significant advances have been made in developing efficient catalysts and understanding the thermodynamics and kinetics of the two paths. However, effective catalysts and processes are required to selectively maximize CO2 conversion to either C2–C4 olefins, C5+ hydrocarbons, or aromatics and to minimize CH4 and CO. Catalysis for higher alcohols synthesis from CO2 is still in the very early stage and requires more fundamental research due to the lack of understanding the possible reaction pathways and of controlling the key intermediates. This review summarizes the progresses in CO2 conversion via heterogeneous catalysis for the two pathways in the past five years and discusses the origin of the activity and plausible reaction mechanism through a combination of computational, experimental, and analytical studies, along with suggestions for designing improved catalysts in the future.

Abstract:The continuously increasing CO2 released from human activities poses a great threat to human survival by fluctuating global climate and disturbing carbon balance among the four reservoirs of the biosphere, earth, air, and water. Converting CO2 to value-added feedstocks via electrocatalysis of the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) has been regarded as one of the most attractive routes to re-balance the carbon cycle, thanks to its multiple advantages of mild operating conditions, easy handling, tunable products and the potential of synergy with the rapidly increasing renewable energy (i.e., solar, wind). Instead of focusing on a special topic of electrocatalysts for the CO2RR that have been extensively reviewed elsewhere, we herein present a rather comprehensive review of the recent research progress, in the view of associated value-added products upon selective electrocatalytic CO2 conversion. We initially provide an overview of the history and the fundamental science regarding the electrocatalytic CO2RR, with a special introduction to the design, preparation, and performance evaluation of electrocatalysts, the factors influencing the CO2RR, and the associated theoretical calculations. Emphasis will then be given to the emerging trends of selective electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 into a variety of value-added products. The structure-performance relationship and mechanism will also be discussed and investigated. The outlooks for CO2 electrocatalysis, including the challenges and opportunities in the development of new electrocatalysts, electrolyzers, the recently rising operando fundamental studies, and the feasibility of industrial applications are finally summarized.

Abstract:Simultaneous capture and transformation of CO2 from industrial effluents into value-added chemicals is considered as one of the most promising technologies for valorization of CO2 into renewable products. In this context, carboxylation of industrial intermediates such as epoxides, alcohols and polyols into organic carbonates has been the focus of extensive research efforts, as it provides novel synthetic routes for essential products for human society. However, selective CO2 conversion to carbonates under mild conditions still remains a grand challenge. In this perspective, we present the key strategies for rational design of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic materials with comprehensive and critical discussion on catalyst synthesis, structures and plausible reaction mechanisms based on the work in the past 5 years. The aim of this review is to provide general guidance on catalyst design for selective CO bond activation in CO2 molecules at atomic level.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of CO 2 to value-added products has attracted overwhelming attention considering its environmental significance and economic benefit. However, because of the kinetic inertness and thermodynamic stability of CO 2 , great challenge still remains on its efficient activation, which is well-accepted as an uphill reaction that requires substantial energy inputs. This mini-review summarizes the state-of-the-art CO 2 activation strategies, including thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and other emerging catalytic techniques, for instance, coupling photo with thermal field. Moreover, the advantages, disadvantages, and potential products are discussed. Furthermore, CO has many industrial applications, such as being an important feedstock in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Therefore, recent research progress and challenges in CO 2 catalytic conversion to CO are highlighted in this mini-review by comparing different techniques with an outlook on the development of catalysts.

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction reaction of carbon dioxide (CO2RR) into valuable products offers notable economic benefits and contributes to environmental sustainability. However, precisely controlling the reaction pathways and selectively converting key intermediates pose considerable challenges. In this study, our theoretical calculations reveal that the active sites with different states of copper atoms (1-3-5-7-9) play a pivotal role in the adsorption behavior of the *CHO critical intermediate. This behavior dictates the subsequent hydrogenation and coupling steps, ultimately influencing the formation of the desired products. Consequently, we designed two model electrocatalysts comprising Cu single atoms and particles supported on CeO2. This design enables controlled *CHO intermediate transformation through either hydrogenation with *H or coupling with *CO, leading to a highly selective CO2RR. Notably, our selective control strategy tunes the Faradaic efficiency from 61.1% for ethylene (C2H4) to 61.2% for methane (CH4). Additionally, the catalyst demonstrated a high current density and remarkable stability, exceeding 500 h of operation. This work not only provides efficient catalysts for selective CO2RR but also offers valuable insights into tailoring surface chemistry and designing catalysts for precise control over catalytic processes to achieve targeted product generation in CO2RR technology.

Abstract:CO2 emission is partly responsible for climate change induced by greenhouse effects. Carbon capture, utilization and storage is a major pathway to reduce CO2 emission. This article reviews conversion of CO2 into value-added products by photocatalytic, electrocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic processes, which involve a catalyst, a reducing agent, an electrolyte and a reactor. An ideal catalyst should be cheap, abundant, non-toxic, less corrosive and chemically stable. Doping various catalysts can increase product yields up to 207 times. Furthermore, monolith reactors generated 23 times and 14 times higher yields than slurry and cell reactors, respectively. Photoelectrocatalytic conversion standout because it combines the advantages of photocatalytic and electrocatalytic processes such as high product yield and selectivity, no electrical energy required, cost-effectiveness, more catalysts option and no sacrificial donor.

Abstract:The selective electrochemical reduction of CO2 to value-added products is a useful strategy for the local storage of intermittent energy sources as chemical fuels and the recycling of industrial CO2 waste into industrial feedstocks. This review highlights some of the recent research focused specifically on modulating substrate delivery and local catalyst environment to enhance reaction and product selectivity in the CO2 reduction reaction by both solid-state materials and discrete molecular systems. We discuss recent studies that focus on (1) using nanostructured and mesoporous solid-state electrocatalysts to modulate local pH and CO2 concentrations near active sites, (2) coating electrocatalysts with porous overlayers to directly control substrate delivery to the electrocatalyst surface, and (3) using polymer encapsulation to modify the coordination environment surrounding molecular electrocatalysts to enhance activity and selectivity for CO2 reduction. We believe that increased research in controlling substrate delivery to enhance reaction and product selectivity for the CO2 reduction reaction is a promising strategy for designing new electrocatalytic systems for the selective and efficient conversion of CO2 to value-added products.

Abstract:In recently years, photocatalytic CO 2 conversion into the value-added chemicals represents a promising approach to relieve the current energy and environmental problems, because it can be powered by renewable solar energy. This review introduces the principles and mechanisms of photocatalytic CO 2 conversion, with a particular focus on the research progress and key strategies involved in the behavioural manipulation of interfacial electron transfer and selectivit of multi-carbon products. Besides, the structure–activity relationship has also been summarized about the currently reported photocatalyst focuing on generation on multi-carbon products. Furthermore, the review also probes the current challenges and future directions, including improved CO 2 conversion efficiency and selectivity, understanded the reaction mechanism and considerated the economic and environmental factors. We sincerely hope that this review will attract more research attention towards photocatalytic CO 2 conversion for the synthesis of value-added multi-carbon products.

Abstract:As a conceivable route to achieving anthropological carbon looping, carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technologies employ waste CO2 as an accessible C1 building block to generate upgraded chemicals or fuels, thereby simultaneously remedying environmental issues and energy crises. However, efficient CO2 conversion is disfavored by both its thermodynamics and its kinetics. Heterostructured materials with well-controlled interfaces have great potential for enhanced catalytic performance in various CO2 transformation reactions, owing to the synergistic effects among components, numerous interfacial and/or surface active sites, increased CO2 adsorption capacity, promoted charge transfer efficiency, and unique physicochemical properties. This Review highlights the state of the art in typical heterostructures, such as core-shell, yolk-shell, Janus, hierarchical (branched and hollow), and 2D/2D layered structures, applied for CO2 conversion with various energy inputs (radiation, electricity, heat). Fabrication methods of different heterostructures and structure-composition-performance relationships are also discussed concisely. Finally, a brief summary and prospective research directions are provided. The motivation of this Review is to offer instructive information on the applicability of inorganic heterostructures for CO2 transformation reactions, and it is hoped that further enlightening studies in this field could emerge in the future.
