Abstract:The convergence theory for the set of simultaneously ψ-approximable points lying on a planar curve is established. Our results complement the divergence theory developed in [1] and thereby completes the general metric theory for planar curves.

Abstract:In this paper we develop a new explicit method to studying rational points near manifolds and obtain optimal lower bounds on the number of rational points of bounded height lying at a given distance from an arbitrary non-degenerate curve. This generalises previous results for analytic non-degenerate curves. Furthermore, the main results are also proved in the inhomogeneous setting. Applications of the main theorem include the Khintchine-Jarník type theorem for divergence for arbitrary non-degenerate curve in $\mathbb{R}^n$.

Abstract:Recently, Pipoli and Sinestrari [Pipoli, G. and Sinestrari, C., Mean curvature flow of pinched submanifolds of ℝℙ n , Comm. Anal. Geom. , 25 , 2017, 799–846] initiated the study of convergence problem for the mean curvature flow of small codimension in the complex projective space ℝℙ m . The purpose of this paper is to develop the work due to Pipoli and Sinestrari, and verify a new convergence theorem for the mean curvature flow of arbitrary codimension in the complex projective space. Namely, the authors prove that if the initial submanifold in ℝℙ m satisfies a suitable pinching condition, then the mean curvature flow converges to a round point in finite time, or converges to a totally geodesic submanifold as t → ∞. Consequently, they obtain a differentiable sphere theorem for submanifolds in the complex projective space.

Abstract:We show that if ℒ is a line in the plane containing a badly approximable vector, then almost every point in ℒ does not admit an improvement in Dirichlet's theorem. Our proof relies on a measure classification result for certain measures invariant under a non-abelian two dimensional group on the homogeneous space SL_3(ℝ)/SL_3(ℤ). Using the measure classification theorem, we reprove a result of Shah about planar nondegenerate curves (which are not necessarily analytic), and prove analogous results for the framework of Diophantine approximation with weights. We also show that there are line segments in ℝ^3, which do contain badly approximable points, and for which all points do admit an improvement in Dirichlet's theorem.
A New Diophantine Approximation Inequality on Surfaces and Its Applications

Abstract:We prove a Diophantine approximation inequality for closed subschemes on surfaces which can be viewed as a joint generalization of recent inequalities of Ru-Vojta and Heier-Levin in this context. As applications, we study various Diophantine problems on affine surfaces given as the complement of three numerically parallel ample projective curves: inequalities involving greatest common divisors, degeneracy of integral points, and related Diophantine equations including families of S-unit equations. We state analogous results in the complex analytic setting, where our main result is an inequality of Second Main Theorem type for surfaces, with applications to the study and value distribution theory of holomorphic curves in surfaces.

Abstract:In a paper from 2010, Budarina, Dickinson and Levesley studied the rational approximation properties of curves parametrized by polynomials with integral coefficients in Euclidean space of arbitrary dimension. Assuming the dimension is at least three and excluding the case of linear dependence of the polynomials together with $P(X)\equiv 1$ over the rational number field, we establish proper generalizations of their main result.

Abstract:Properties of a parametric curve in R^3 are often determined by analysis of its piecewise linear (PL) approximation. For Bezier curves, there are standard algorithms, known as subdivision, that recursively create PL curves that converge to the curve in distance . The exterior angles of PL curves under subdivision are shown to converge to 0 at the rate of $O(\sqrt{\frac{1}{2^i}})$, where i is the number of subdivisions. This angular convergence is useful for determining self-intersections and knot type.

Abstract:One kind of the L-average Lipschitz condition is introduced to covariant derivatives of sections on Riemannian manifolds. A convergence criterion of Newton's method and the radii of the uniqueness balls of the singular points for sections on Riemannian manifolds, which is independent of the curvatures, are established under the assumption that the covariant derivatives of the sections satisfy this kind of the L-average Lipschitz condition. Some applications to special cases including Kantorovich's condition and the γ-condition as well as Smale's α-theory are provided. In particular, the result due to Ferreira and Svaiter [Kantorovich's Theorem on Newton's method in Riemannian manifolds, J. Complexity 18 (2002) 304–329] is extended while the results due to Dedieu Priouret, Malajovich [Newton's method on Riemannian manifolds: covariant alpha theory, IMA J. Numer. Anal. 23 (2003) 395–419] are improved significantly. Moreover, the corresponding results due to Alvarez, Bolter, Munier [A unifying local convergence result for Newton's method in Riemannian manifolds, Found. Comput. Math. to appear] for vector fields and mappings on Riemannian manifolds are also extended.

Abstract:The method for approximation of planar curve by circular arcs with length preservation, proposed by I.Kh. Sabitov and A.V. Slovesnov, is analyzed. We extend the applicability of the method, and consider some corollaries, not related to the approximation problem. Inequalities for the length of a convex spiral arc with prescribed two-point $G^1$ or $G^2$ Hermite data are derived. We propose a scheme of computer modelling to explore properties of planar curves. As an example, closeness of ovals is tested, leading to some conjectures about closeness conditions.

Abstract:The goal of this survey is to discuss the Quantitative non-Divergence estimate on the space of lattices and present a selection of its applications. The topics covered include extremal manifolds, Khintchine-Groshev type theorems, rational points lying close to manifolds and badly approximable points on manifolds. The main emphasis is on the role of the Quantitative non-Divergence estimate in the aforementioned topics within the theory of Diophantine approximation, and therefore this paper should not be regarded as a comprehensive overview of the area.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the intrinsic Diophantine approximation on the triadic Cantor set $\mathcal{K}$, i.e. approximating the points in $\mathcal{K}$ by rational numbers inside $\mathcal{K}$, a question posed by K. Mahler. By using another height function of a rational number in $\mathcal{K}$, i.e. the denominator obtained from its periodic 3-adic expansion, a complete metric theory for this variant intrinsic Diophantine approximation is presented which yields the divergence theory of Mahler's original question.

Abstract:This paper investigates the convergence condition :br the polynomial approximation of rational functions and rational curves. The main result, based on a hybrid expression of rational functions (or curves), is that two-point Hermite interpolation converges if all eigenvalue moduli of a certain r x r matrix are less than 2, where r is the degree of the rational function (or curve), and where the elements of the matrix are expressions involving only the denominator polynomial coefficients (weights) of the rational function (or curve). As a corollary for the special case of r = 1, a necessary and sufficient condition for convergence is also obtained which only involves the roots of the denominator of the rational function and which is shown to be superior to the condition obtained by rite traditional remainder theory for polynomial interpolation. For the low degree cases (r = 1, 2, and 3), concrete conditions are derived. Application to rational Bernstein-Bezier curves is discussed. (C) 1997 Academic Press.

Abstract:The paper proves a result on the convergence of discrete conformal maps to the Riemann mappings for Jordan domains. It is a counterpart of Rodin-Sullivan's theorem on convergence of circle packing mappings to the Riemann mapping in the new setting of discrete conformality. The proof follows the same strategy that Rodin-Sullivan used by establishing a rigidity result for regular hexagonal triangulations of the plane and estimating the quasiconformal constants associated to the discrete conformal maps.

Abstract:In our previous works we proved a finiteness property of the radii of convergence functions associated with a vector bundle with connection on $p$-adic analytic curves. We showed that the radii are locally constant functions outside a locally finite graph in the curve, called controlling graph. In this paper we refine that finiteness results by giving a bound on the size of the controlling graph in terms of the geometry of the curve and the rank of the module. This is based on super-harmonicity properties of radii of convergence and partial heights of the Newton polygon. Under suitable assumptions, we relate the size of the controlling graph associated with the total height of the convergence Newton polygon to the Euler characteristic in the sense of de Rham cohomology.

Abstract:We prove a version of the Khinchin–Groshev theorem for Diophantine approximation of matrices subject to a congruence condition. The proof relies on an extension of the Dani correspondence to the quotient by a congruence subgroup. This correspondence together with a multiple ergodic theorem are used to study rational approximations in several congruence classes simultaneously. The result in this part holds in the generality of weighted approximation but is restricted to simple approximation functions.

Abstract:This paper studies well-defindness and convergence of subdivision schemes which operate on Riemannian manifolds with nonpositive sectional curvature. These schemes are constructed from linear ones by replacing affine averages by the Riemannian center of mass. In contrast to previous work, we consider schemes without any sign restriction on the mask, and our results apply to all input data. We also analyse the Hölder continuity of the resulting limit curves. Our main result states that convergence is implied by contractivity of a derived scheme, resp. iterated derived scheme. In this way we establish that convergence of a linear subdivision scheme is almost equivalent to convergence of its nonlinear manifold counterpart.

Abstract:We prove a version of the classical Runge and Mergelyan uniform approximation theorems for non-orientable minimal surfaces in Euclidean 3-space R3. Then, we obtain some geometric applications. Among them, we emphasize the following ones: 1. A Gunning-Narasimhan type theorem for non-orientable conformal surfaces. 2. An existence theorem for non-orientable minimal surfaces in R3, with arbitrary conformal structure, properly projecting into a plane. 3. An existence result for non-orientable minimal surfaces in R3 with arbitrary conformal structure and Gauss map omitting one projective direction.

Abstract:Topology analysis and geometric feature determination for curves and surfaces are basic problems in geometric modeling and computer aided design. When the curves and surfaces are given in implicit expressions, the problems become more difficult. This paper presents a complete algorithm framework for the problem of certified G 1 approximation of a planar algebraic curve under global error control. Compared to other work on topology and geometric analysis of algebraic curves, this method presents a new topology analysis as well as a geometric information computation. Moreover, this method uses generalized asymptotes as the approximation of the unbounded part, which makes it achieve global approximation with given precision.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we prove quantitative results about geodesic approximations to submanifolds in negatively curved spaces. Among the main tools is a new and general Jarník–Besicovitch type theorem in Diophantine approximation. Our framework allows manifolds of variable negative curvature, a variety of geometric targets, and logarithm laws as well as spiraling phenomena in both measure and dimension aspect. Several of the results are new also for manifolds of constant negative sectional curvature. We further establish a large intersection property of Falconer in this context.
