Abstract:This paper reports the analysis of data on traumatic brain injury using a probabilistic graphical modeling technique known as reconstructability analysis (RA). The analysis shows the flexibility, power, and comprehensibility of RA modeling, which is well-suited for mining biomedical data. One finding of the analysis is that education is a confounding variable for the Digit Symbol Test in discriminating the severity of concussion; another — and anomalous — finding is that previous head injury predicts improved performance on the Reaction Time test. This analysis was exploratory, so its findings require follow-on confirmatory tests of their generalizability.

Abstract:Current developments in positron emission tomography focus on improving timing performance for scanners with time-of-flight (TOF) capability, and incorporating depth-of-interaction (DOI) information. Recent studies have shown that incorporating DOI correction in TOF detectors can improve timing resolution, and that DOI also becomes more important in long axial field-of-view scanners. We have previously reported the development of DOI-encoding detectors using phosphor-coated scintillation crystals; here we study the timing properties of those crystals to assess the feasibility of providing some level of DOI information without significantly degrading the timing performance. We used Monte Carlo simulations to provide a detailed understanding of light transport in phosphor-coated crystals which cannot be fully characterized experimentally. Our simulations used a custom reflectance model based on 3D crystal surface measurements. Lutetium oxyorthosilicate crystals were simulated with a phosphor coating in contact with the scintillator surfaces and an external diffuse reflector (teflon). Light output, energy resolution, and pulse shape showed excellent agreement with experimental data obtained on 3 × 3 × 10 mm³ crystals coupled to a photomultiplier tube. Scintillator intrinsic timing resolution was simulated with head-on and side-on configurations, confirming the trends observed experimentally. These results indicate that the model may be used to predict timing properties in phosphor-coated crystals and guide the coating for optimal DOI resolution/timing performance trade-off for a given crystal geometry. Simulation data suggested that a time stamp generated from early photoelectrons minimizes degradation of the timing resolution, thus making this method potentially more useful for TOF-DOI detectors than our initial experiments suggested. Finally, this approach could easily be extended to the study of timing properties in other scintillation crystals, with a range of treatments and materials attached to the surface.

Timing resolution in double-sided silicon photon-counting computed tomography detectors

Abstract:Purpose: Our purpose is to investigate the timing resolution in edge-on silicon strip detectors for photon-counting spectral computed tomography. Today, the timing for detection of individual x-rays is not measured, but in the future, timing information can be valuable to accurately reconstruct the interactions caused by each primary photon. Approach: We assume a pixel size of 12 × 500 μ m 2 and a detector with double-sided readout with low-noise CMOS electronics for pulse processing for every pixel on each side. Due to the electrode width in relation to the wafer thickness, the induced current signals are largely dominated by charge movement close to the collecting electrodes. By employing double-sided readout electrodes, at least two signals are generated for each interaction. By comparing the timing of the induced current pulses, the time of the interaction can be determined and used to identify interactions that originate from the same incident photon. Using a Monte Carlo simulation of photon interactions in combination with a charge transport model, we evaluate the performance of estimating the time of the interaction for different interaction positions. Results: Our simulations indicate that a time resolution of 1 ns can be achieved with a noise level of 0.5 keV. In a detector with no electronic noise, the corresponding time resolution is ∼ 0.1 ns . Conclusions: Time resolution in edge-on silicon strip CT detectors can potentially be used to increase the signal-to-noise-ratio and energy resolution by helping in identifying Compton scattered photons in the detector.
Timing Estimation and Limits in TOF-PET Detectors Producing Prompt Photons

Abstract:The production of prompt photons providing high photon time densities is a promising avenue to reach ultrahigh coincidence time resolution (CTR) in time-of-flight PET. Detectors producing prompt photons are receiving high interest experimentally, ignited by past exploratory theoretical studies that have anchored some guiding principles. Here, we aim to consolidate and extend the foundations for the analytical modeling of prompt generating detectors. We extend the current models to a larger range of prompt emission kinetics where more stringent requirements on the prompt photon yield rapidly emerge as a limiting factor. Lower bound and estimator evaluations are investigated with different underlying models, notably by merging or keeping separate the prompt and scintillation photon populations. We further show the potential benefits of knowing the proportion of prompt photons within a detection set to improve the CTR by mitigating the detrimental effect of population (prompt vs scintillation) mixing. Taking into account the fluctuations on the average number of detected prompt photons in the model reveals a limited influence when prompt photons are accompanied by fast scintillation (e.g., LSO:Ce:Ca) but a more significant effect when accompanied by slower scintillation (e.g., BGO). Establishing performance characteristics and limitations of prompt generating detectors is paramount to gauging and targeting the best possible timing capabilities they can offer.

Abstract:The potential of photon detectors to achieve precise timing information is of increasing importance in many domains, PET and CT scanners in medical imaging and particle physics detectors, amongst others. The goal to increase by an order of magnitude the sensitivity of PET scanners and to deliver, via time-of-flight (TOF), true space points for each event, as well as the constraints set by future particle accelerators require a further leap in time resolution of scintillator-based ionizing radiation detectors, reaching eventually a few picoseconds resolution for sub MeV energy deposits. In spite of the impressive progress made in the last decade by several manufacturers, the Single Photon Time Resolution (SPTR) of SiPMs is still in the range of 70-120ps FWHM, whereas a value of 10ps or even less would be desirable. Such a step requires a break with traditional methods and the development of novel technologies. The possibility of combining the extraordinary potential of nanophotonics with new approaches offered by modern microelectronics and 3D electronic integration opens novel perspectives for the development of a new generation of metamaterial-based SiPMs with unprecedented photodetection efficiency and timing resolution.

Abstract:The coincidence time resolution (CTR) of scintillator based detectors commonly used in positron emission tomography is well known to be dependent on the scintillation decay time (τd) and the number of photons detected (n'), i.e. CTR proportional variant √τd/n'. However, it is still an open question to what extent the scintillation rise time (τr) and other fast or prompt photons, e.g. Cherenkov photons, at the beginning of the scintillation process influence the CTR. This paper presents measurements of the scintillation emission rate for different LSO type crystals, i.e. LSO:Ce, LYSO:Ce, LSO:Ce codoped Ca and LGSO:Ce. For the various LSO-type samples measured we find an average value of 70 ps for the scintillation rise time, although some crystals like LSO:Ce codoped Ca seem to have a much faster rise time in the order of 20 ps. Additional measurements for LuAG:Ce and LuAG:Pr show a rise time of 535 ps and 251 ps, respectively. For these crystals, prompt photons (Cherenkov) can be observed at the beginning of the scintillation event. Furthermore a significantly lower rise time value is observed when codoping with calcium. To quantitatively investigate the influence of the rise time to the time resolution we measured the CTR with the same L(Y)SO samples and compared the values to Monte Carlo simulations. Using the measured relative light yields, rise- and decay times of the scintillators we are able to quantitatively understand the measured CTRs in our simulations. Although the rise time is important to fully explain the CTR variation for the different samples tested we determined its influence on the CTR to be in the order of a few percent only. This result is surprising because, if only photonstatistics of the scintillation process is considered, the CTR would be proportional to the square root of the rise time. The unexpected small rise time influence on the CTR can be explained by the convolution of the scintillation rate with the single photon time resolution (SPTR) of the photodetector and the photon travel spread (PTS) in the crystal. The timing benefits of prompt photons at the beginning of the scintillation process (Cherenkov etc) are further studied, which leads to the conclusion that the scintillation rise time, SPTR and PTS have to be lowered simultaneously to fully profit from these fast photons in order to improve the CTR significantly.

Abstract:A plastic scintillator bar with dimensions 300 cm x 2.5 cm x 11 cm was exposed to a focused muon beam to study its light yield and timing characteristics as a function of position and angle of incidence. The scintillating light was read out at both ends by photomultiplier tubes whose pulse shapes were recorded by waveform digitizers. Results obtained with the WAVECATCHER and SAMPIC digitizers are analyzed and compared. A discussion of the various factors affecting the timing resolution is presented. Prospects for applications of plastic scintillator technology in large-scale particle physics detectors with timing resolution around 100 ps are provided in light of the results.

Abstract:Standard signal processing approaches for scintillation detectors in positron emission tomography (PET) derive accurate estimates for 511 keV photon time of interaction and energy imparted to the detection media from aggregate characteristics of electronic pulse shapes. The ultimate realization of a scintillation detector for PET is one that provides a unique timestamp and position for each detected scintillation photon. Detectors with these capabilities enable advanced concepts for three-dimensional (3D) position and time of interaction estimation with methods that exploit the spatiotemporal arrival time kinetics of individual scintillation photons. In this work, we show that taking into consideration the temporal photon emission density of a scintillator, the channel density of an analog silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) array, and employing fast electronic readout with digital signal processing, a detector that counts and timestamps scintillation photons can be realized. To demonstrate this approach, a prototype detector was constructed, comprising multichannel electronic readout for a bismuth germanate (BGO) scintillator coupled to an SiPM array. In proof-of-concept measurements, we were able to count and provide unique timestamps for 66% of all optical photons, where the remaining 34% (two-or-more-photon pulses) are also independently counted, but each photon bunch shares a common timestamp. We show this detector concept can implement 3D positioning of 511 keV photon interactions and thereby enable corrections for time of interaction estimators. The detector achieved 17.6% energy resolution at 511 keV and 237±10 ps full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) coincidence time resolution (CTR) (fast spectral component) versus a reference detector. We outline the methodology, readout, and approach for achieving this detector capability in first-ever, proof-of-concept measurements for scintillation photon counting detector with analog silicon photomultipliers. The presented detector concept is a promising design for large area, high sensitivity TOF-PET detector modules that can implement advanced event positioning and time of interaction estimators, which could push state-of-the-art performance.

Fundamental Limits to Single-Photon Detection Determined by Quantum Coherence and Backaction

Abstract:Single-photon detectors have achieved impressive performance, and have led to a number of new scientific discoveries and technological applications. Existing models of photodetectors are semiclassical in that the field-matter interaction is treated perturbatively and time-separated from physical processes in the absorbing matter. An open question is whether a fully quantum detector, whereby the optical field, the optical absorption, and the amplification are considered as one quantum system, could have improved performance. Here we develop a theoretical model of such photodetectors and employ simulations to reveal the critical role played by quantum coherence and amplification backaction in dictating the performance. We show that coherence and backaction lead to tradeoffs between detector metrics, and also determine optimal system designs through control of the quantum-classical interface. Importantly, we establish the design parameters that result in a perfect photodetector with 100% efficiency, no dark counts, and minimal jitter, thus paving the route for next generation detectors.

On reachable energy resolution of SiPM based scintillation counters for X-ray detection

Abstract:Presently, silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) are very attractive devices to replace photomultipliers for light detection in many different fields. For example, they could be used in detectors of photons with energies of 20–150 keV for medical and nondestructive testing applications. The small size and high electron gain of SiPMs make them very attractive candidates for pixelated X-ray detectors operating in a photon counting mode. In this research we evaluated the detector performance that can be reached with up-to-date Lu-based scintillators. Application of LYSO:Ce and LFS-3 scintillators provides high count rate capability because of a short scintillator decay time of ∼ 40 ns but enables reaching just a moderate energy resolution. Meanwhile, with a LuYAG:Pr scintillator of quite low non-proportionality one can attain much better energy resolution at a reduced rate.

Abstract:Digital silicon photomultiplier (dSiPM) arrays have favorable characteristics for application in monolithic scintillator detectors for time-of-flight positron emission tomography (PET). To fully exploit these benefits, a maximum likelihood interaction time estimation (MLITE) method was developed to derive the time of interaction from the multiple time stamps obtained per scintillation event. MLITE was compared to several deterministic methods. Timing measurements were performed with monolithic scintillator detectors based on novel dSiPM arrays and LSO:Ce,0.2%Ca crystals of 16 × 16 × 10 mm(3), 16 × 16 × 20 mm(3), 24 × 24 × 10 mm(3), and 24 × 24 × 20 mm(3). The best coincidence resolving times (CRTs) for pairs of identical detectors were obtained with MLITE and measured 157 ps, 185 ps, 161 ps, and 184 ps full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM), respectively. For comparison, a small reference detector, consisting of a 3 × 3 × 5 mm(3) LSO:Ce,0.2%Ca crystal coupled to a single pixel of a dSiPM array, was measured to have a CRT as low as 120 ps FWHM. The results of this work indicate that the influence of the optical transport of the scintillation photons on the timing performance of monolithic scintillator detectors can at least partially be corrected for by utilizing the information contained in the spatio-temporal distribution of the collection of time stamps registered per scintillation event.

Abstract:This paper presents the results of a Monte Carlo study of the time resolution of a scintillating fibre detector and analyses its dependence on the various aspects of detector construction. The estimations of the theoretical time resolutions for detectors with different numbers of fibre layers and different types of acrylic-based fibre coatings are presented. The method is suggested to decrease the rate counting effects encountered in high rate applications. It has been observed that for dual cladding fibres with a fluorinated polymer used for the outer cladding, the most significant factor contributing to the time resolution is the number of fibre layers, with the fibre coating being the marginal one. Another observation shows that the introduction of a gap between the fibre and the photomultiplier glass window allows the reduction of the number of photoelectrons by 25% with only a slight decrease in the time resolution, which may be helpful in decreasing the pulse pile-up effects and the photomultiplier gain, commonly observed under high rate conditions.

Abstract:The scintillation index is a common measure of the effects of atmospheric turbulence. Using a photon-counting sensor, the integration time for each sample needs to be short enough to ensure that the intensity is constant during this time. Simultaneously, hardware limitations, including detector dead-time, restrict the count rate so that the number of counts in a single time segment is extremely low. The dead-time also introduces nonlinear effects. The variance calculation in the scintillation index formula is then dominated by quantization error, and the scintillation index is severely overestimated. We investigate two methods of correcting the scintillation index based on data from a time-correlated single-photon counting laser radar system. The first approach is based on the covariance calculation of the data and can be used for very low count rates and high temporal resolution. This method may also be useful in other cases where the variance of noisy, time-resolved data needs to be calculated. The second method is based on fitting the theoretical probability density function for the intensity fluctuation caused by propagation through turbulence to the experimental data. This method can take dead-time effects into account and be used for higher count rates.

Abstract:When first introduced, single-photon counting detectors reshaped crystallography at synchrotrons. Their fast readout speed enabled, for example, shutter-less data collection and fine slicing of the rotation angle and boosted the development of new experimental techniques like ptychography. Under optimal conditions, single-photon counting detectors provide an unlimited dynamic range with image noise only limited by the Poisson statistics of the incoming photons. Counting the pulses from individual photons, essentially what made the detectors so successful, also causes the main drawback, which is the loss of efficiency at high photon fluxes due to pulse pileup in the analog front end. To fully take advantage of diffraction-limited light sources, the next-generation single-photon counters need to improve their count rate capabilities in the same order of magnitude as the increased flux. Moreover, fast frame rates (a few kHz) are required to cope with the shorter dwell time achievable, thanks to the higher flux. Detector architecture with multiple comparators and counters can open new possibilities for energy-resolved imaging, while interpixel communication can overcome the issues arising from charge sharing and reduce the loss of efficiency at the pixel corners. Coupling single-photon counting detectors to high-Z sensors for hard X-ray detection ( > 20 keV) and to low-gain avalanche diodes (LGADs) for soft X-rays is also necessary to make use of the increased coherence of the new light sources over the full radiation spectrum. In this paper, we present possible strategies to improve the performance of single-photon counting detectors at the fourth-generation synchrotron sources and compare them to charge integrating detectors.

Exploring Scintillators and Cherenkov Radiators for MIP Timing Detectors

Abstract:This article presents the timing performance of materials with fast light emission, tested as Minimum Ionizing Particle detectors using 150 GeV hadron beams in Monte Carlo simulations and at the CERN SPS North Area. Pixels of cross-section 2 x 2 mm2 or 3 x 3 mm2 and length of 3 or 10 mm were coupled to Hamamatsu SiPM and read out by fast high-frequency electronics. Materials whose timing performance relies on Cherenkov emission, namely BGSO, PWO, and PbF2, achieved time resolutions in the range 24-36ps. Scintillators as L(Y)SO:Ce, GAGG, and BaF2 reached below 15 ps, the best topping at 12.1 +/- 0.4 ps. These fast materials are compared to LYSO and their additional benefit is discussed. Given the promising results of BaF2, the study is completed with measurements of the scintillation properties of a set doped with yttrium to quench the slow light emission.

Abstract:Several applications that employ SiPMs require high time precision readout electronics. This work presents a study for the optimization of timing resolution of readout electronics for SiPMs focused on the effect of sensor area, transistor scaling and power consumption on electronic jitter. The design of the most critical stages are presented, specially the front-end input stage in current-mode. The performance of three different technologies (180, 130 and 65 nm) are studied. 65 nm is the best option to obtain good timing resolution with less power consumption. Dividing the sensor into smaller segments improves the Single Photon Electronics Jitter (SPEJ), but does not translate into a better Coincidence Time Resolution (CTR) when keeping the power per unit area constant, performing analog summation or employing an averaging algorithm of the time stamps for small LSO:Ce:%0.2Ca scintillator crystal.

Abstract:Abstract The imaging performance of clinical positron emission tomography (PET) systems has evolved impressively during the last ∼15 years. A main driver of these improvements has been the introduction of time-of-flight (TOF) detectors with high spatial resolution and detection efficiency, initially based on photomultiplier tubes, later silicon photomultipliers. This review aims to offer insight into the challenges encountered, solutions developed, and lessons learned during this period. Detectors based on fast, bright, inorganic scintillators form the scope of this work, as these are used in essentially all clinical TOF-PET systems today. The improvement of the coincidence resolving time (CRT) requires the optimization of the entire detection chain and a sound understanding of the physics involved facilitates this effort greatly. Therefore, the theory of scintillation detector timing is reviewed first. Once the fundamentals have been set forth, the principal detector components are discussed: the scintillator and the photosensor. The parameters that influence the CRT are examined and the history, state-of-the-art, and ongoing developments are reviewed. Finally, the interplay between these components and the optimization of the overall detector design are considered. Based on the knowledge gained to date, it appears feasible to improve the CRT from the values of 200–400 ps achieved by current state-of-the-art TOF-PET systems to about 100 ps or less, even though this may require the implementation of advanced methods such as time resolution recovery. At the same time, it appears unlikely that a system-level CRT in the order of ∼10 ps can be reached with conventional scintillation detectors. Such a CRT could eliminate the need for conventional tomographic image reconstruction and a search for new approaches to timestamp annihilation photons with ultra-high precision is therefore warranted. While the focus of this review is on timing performance, it attempts to approach the topic from a clinically driven perspective, i.e. bearing in mind that the ultimate goal is to optimize the value of PET in research and (personalized) medicine.

Abstract:Background: Good timing resolution in medical imaging applications such as TOF-CT or TOF-PET can boost image quality or patient comfort significantly by reducing the influence of background noise. However, the timing resolution of state-of-the-art detectors in CT and PET are limited by their light emission process. Core-valence cross-luminescence is an alternative, but well-known compounds (e.g. BaF2) pose several problems for medical imaging applications, such as their emission wavelength in the deep UV. CsZnCl-based materials show promise to solve this issue, as they provide fast decay times of 1-2 ns and an emission wavelength around 300 nm. Results: In this work, we investigated two CsZnCl-compounds: Cs2ZnCl4 and Cs3ZnCl5. We validated the previously published decay times on a time-correlated single-photon counting setup with 1.786 ± 0.016 ns for Cs2ZnCl4 and 1.034 ± 0.013 ns for Cs3ZnCl5. The setup's high resolution enabled the discovery of an additional prompt emission component with a significant abundance of 98 ± 18 (Cs2ZnCl4) and 86 ± 14 (Cs3ZnCl5) photons/MeV energy deposit. In a PET coincidence experiment, we measured the best coincidence time resolution (CTR) of 62 ps (FWHM) for Cs2ZnCL4 coupled to FBK VUV SiPMs with silicon oil. To assess the CTR for lower energies, we filtered the energy along the Compton continuum and found a deteriorated CTR that seems to be mainly influenced by photon statistics. Furthermore, this study gave us a rough estimate of e.g. 150 ps (FWHM) CTR at 100 keV energy for Cs2ZnCL4. From measurements with high activity of 14 MBq to check for pile-up effects we assume that Cs2ZnCl4 is better suited for high-rate time-of-flight applications than lutetium-based oxides. Simulations demonstrated that the stopping power of Cs2ZnCl4 is lower than for LSO:Ce,Ca, meaning that a high amount of material would be needed for TOF-PET applications. However, the stopping power seems acceptable for applications in TOF-CT. Conclusions: The fast decay time, state-of-the-art CTR in benchtop experiments and high-rate suitability make CsZnCl materials a promising candidate for time-of-flight experiments. We consider especially TOF-CT a suitable application due to its relatively low X-ray energies (~ 100 keV) and the thusly acceptable stopping power of Cs2ZnCl4. Currently, further exploration of the prompt emission and its creation mechanism is planned, as well as investigating the light transport of Cs2ZnCl4 in longer crystals.
Photon Energy-Dependent Timing Jitter and Spectrum Resolution Research Based on Time-Resolved SNSPDs

Abstract:Superconducting nanowire-based single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) are promising devices, especially with unrivalled timing jitter ability. However, the intrinsic physical mechanism and the ultimate limit of the timing jitter are still unknown. Here, we investigated the timing jitter of the SNSPD response to different excitation wavelengths from visible to near-infrared (NIR) as a function of the relative bias currents and the substrate temperature. We established a physical model based on a 1D electrothermal model to describe the hotspot evolution and thermal diffusion process after a single photon irradiated the nanowire. The simulations are in good agreement with the experimental results and reveal the other influencing factors and potential ways to further improve the timing jitter of SNSPDs. Finally, we introduce a new time-resolved approach, where by collecting the instrument response function (IRF) of SNSPDs, the wavelength of the incident photons can be easily discriminated with a resolution below 80 nm.
