Abstract:We solve a problem posed by Cardinali and Sastry [2] about factorization of $2$-covers of finite classical generalized quadrangles. To that end, we develop a general theory of cover factorization for generalized quadrangles, and in particular we study the isomorphism problem for such covers and associated geometries. As a byproduct, we obtain new results about semipartial geometries coming from $\theta$-covers, and consider related problems.

Finite Fields and Their Applications

Abstract:<p>In this paper, which is a sequel to <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#br0140">[12]</a>, we proceed with our study of covers and decomposition laws for geometries related to generalized quadrangles. In particular, we obtain a higher decomposition law for all Kantor-Knuth generalized quadrangles which generalizes one of the main results in <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#br0140">[12]</a>. In a second part of the paper, we study the set of all Kantor-Knuth ovoids (with given parameter) in a fixed finite parabolic quadrangle, and relate this set to embeddings of parabolic quadrangles into Kantor-Knuth quadrangles. This point of view gives rise to an answer of a question posed in <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#br0130">[11]</a>.</p>

Abstract:We prove a new lower bound for the almost 20 year old problem of determining the smallest possible size of an essential cover of the $n$-dimensional hypercube $\{\pm 1\}^n$, i.e. the smallest possible size of a collection of hyperplanes that forms a minimal cover of $\{\pm 1\}^n$ and such that furthermore every variable appears with a non-zero coefficient in at least one of the hyperplane equations. We show that such an essential cover must consist of at least $10^{-2}\cdot n^{2/3}/(\log n)^{2/3}$ hyperplanes, improving previous lower bounds of Linial-Radhakrishnan, of Yehuda-Yehudayoff and of Araujo-Balogh-Mattos.

Abstract:We continue research on problems similar to the Koebe Quarter Theorem for close-to-convex polynomials with all zeros of derivative in . We found the minimal disc containing all images of and the maximal disc contained in all images of through polynomials of degree 6. Moreover, we determine the extremal functions for both problems. Furthermore, we state the conjecture concerning polynomials of higher even degrees.

Abstract:An important problem in computational arithmetic geometry is to find changes of coordinates to simplify a system of polynomial equations with rational coefficients. This is tackled by a combination of two techniques, called minimisation and reduction. We give an algorithm for minimising certain pairs of quadratic forms, subject to the constraint that the first quadratic form is fixed. This has applications to 2-descent on the Jacobian of a genus 2 curve.

Abstract:In 1957, Hadwiger made a conjecture that every n -dimensional convex body can be covered by 2 n translates of its interior. Up to now, this conjecture is still open for all n ⩾ 3. In 1933, Borsuk made a conjecture that every n -dimensional bounded set can be divided into n + 1 subsets of smaller diameters. Up to now, this conjecture is open for 4 ⩽ n ⩽ 297. In this article we encode the two conjectures into continuous functions defined on the spaces of convex bodies, propose a four-step program to attack them, and obtain some partial results.

Abstract:We consider a disjoint cover (partition) of an undirected weighted finite graph $G$ by $|J|$ connected subgraphs (clusters) $\{S_{j}\}_{j\in J}$ and select a function $\zeta_{j}\geq 0$ on each of the clusters. For a given signal $f$ on $G$ the set of its weighted average values samples is defined via inner products $\{\langle \zeta_{j}, f\rangle\}_{j\in J}$. The goal of the paper is to establish exact quadrature formulas with positive weights which are exploring these samples generated by bandlimited functions.

Covering Number of Real Algebraic Varieties and Beyond: Improved Bounds and Applications

Abstract:Covering numbers are a powerful tool used in the development of approximation algorithms, randomized dimension reduction methods, smoothed complexity analysis, and others. In this paper we prove upper bounds on the covering number of numerous sets in Euclidean space, namely real algebraic varieties, images of polynomial maps and semialgebraic sets in terms of the number of variables and degrees of the polynomials involved. The bounds remarkably improve the best known general bound by Yomdin-Comte, and our proof is much more straightforward. In particular, our result gives new bounds on the volume of the tubular neighborhood of the image of a polynomial map and a semialgebraic set, where results for varieties by Lotz and Basu-Lerario are not directly applicable. We illustrate the power of the result on three computational applications. Firstly, we derive a near-optimal bound on the covering number of low rank CP tensors, quantifying their approximation properties and filling in an important missing piece of theory for tensor dimension reduction and reconstruction. Secondly, we prove a bound on the required dimension for the randomized sketching of polynomial optimization problems, which controls how much computation can be saved through randomization without sacrificing solution quality. Finally, we deduce generalization error bounds for deep neural networks with rational or ReLU activation functions, improving or matching the best known results in the machine learning literature while helping to quantify the impact of architecture choice on generalization error.

Solutions to the minimal surface system with large singular sets

Abstract:Lawson and Osserman proved that the Dirichlet problem for the minimal surface system is not always solvable in the class of Lipschitz maps. However, it is known that minimizing sequences (for area) of Lipschitz graphs converge to objects called Cartesian currents. Essentially nothing is known about these limits. We show that such limits can have surprisingly large interior vertical and non-minimal portions. This demonstrates a striking discrepancy between the parametric and non-parametric area minimization problems in higher codimension. Moreover, our construction has the smallest possible dimension ($n = 3$) and codimension $(m = 2)$.

Abstract:In a recent publication [D. Govc, W. A. Marzantowicz and P. Pavešić, Estimates of covering type and the number of vertices of minimal triangulations, Discrete Comput. Geom. 63 2020, 1, 31–48], we have introduced a new method, based on the Lusternik–Schnirelmann category and the cohomology ring of a space X, that yields lower bounds for the size of a triangulation of X. In this current paper, we present an important extension that takes into account the fundamental group of X. In fact, if π 1 ⁢ ( X ) {\pi_{1}(X)} contains elements of finite order, then one can often find cohomology classes of high 'category weight', which in turn allow for much stronger estimates of the size of triangulations of X. We develop several weighted estimates and then apply our method to compute explicit lower bounds for the size of triangulations of orbit spaces of cyclic group actions on a variety of spaces including products of spheres, Stiefel manifolds, Lie groups and highly-connected manifolds.

Abstract:<div><h2>Abstract</h2><p>The notion of covering type was recently introduced by Karoubi and Weibel to measure the complexity of a topological space by means of good coverings. When <em>X</em> has the homotopy type of a finite CW-complex, its covering type coincides with the minimum possible number of vertices of a simplicial complex homotopy equivalent to <em>X</em>. In this article we compute the covering type of all closed surfaces. Our results completely settle a problem posed by Karoubi and Weibel, and shed more light on the relationship between the topology of surfaces and the number of vertices of minimal triangulations from a homotopy point of view.</p></div>
The Minimal Denominator Function and Geometric Generalizations

Abstract:We provide a geometric interpretation for a normalized version of the minimal denominator function, $$q_{\min}(x,\delta)=\min\left\{q\in \mathbb{N}: \text{ there exists } p\in\mathbb{Z} \text{ such that } \frac{p}{q}\in (x-\delta,x+\delta)\right\},$$ introduced by Chen and Haynes. We use this interpretation to compute the limiting distribution of a suitably normalized version of $q_{\min}(x,\delta)$ as a function of $x$, and give generalizations of the idea of minimal denominators to higher-dimensional unimodular lattices, linear forms, and translation surfaces. The key idea is to turn this circle of problems into equidistribution problems for translates of unipotent orbits of a Lie group action on an appropriate moduli space.

Abstract:The amount of hyperplanes that are needed in order to cover the Boolean cube has been studied in various contexts. Linial and Radhakrishnan introduced the notion of essential covers. An essential cover is a collection of hyperplanes that form a minimal cover of the vertices of the hypercube, and every coordinate is influential in at least one of the hyperplanes. Linial and Radhakrishnan proved using algebraic tools that every essential cover of the n -cube must be of size at least . We devise a stronger lower bound method, and show that the size of every essential cover is at least . This result has implications in proof complexity, because essential covers have been used to prove lower bounds for several proof systems.

Abstract:A surprising 'converse to the polynomial method' of Aaronson et al. (CCC'16) shows that any bounded quadratic polynomial can be computed exactly in expectation by a 1-query algorithm up to a universal multiplicative factor related to the famous Grothendieck constant. A natural question posed there asks if bounded quartic polynomials can be approximated by $2$-query quantum algorithms. Arunachalam, Palazuelos and the first author showed that there is no direct analogue of the result of Aaronson et al. in this case. We improve on this result in the following ways: First, we point out and fix a small error in the construction that has to do with a translation from cubic to quartic polynomials. Second, we give a completely explicit example based on techniques from additive combinatorics. Third, we show that the result still holds when we allow for a small additive error. For this, we apply an SDP characterization of Gribling and Laurent (QIP'19) for the completely-bounded approximate degree.

Abstract:Let $\mbox{$\cal V$} \subseteq {\mathbb F}^n$ be a finite set of points in an affine space. A finite set of affine hyperplanes $\{H_1, \ldots ,H_m\}$ is said to be an almost cover of $\mbox{$\cal V$}$ and $\mathbf{v}$, if their union $\cup_{j=1}^m H_j$ contains $\mbox{$\cal V$}\setminus \{\mathbf{v}\}$ but does not contain $\mathbf{v}$. We give here a lower bound for the size of a minimal almost cover of $\mbox{$\cal V$}$ and $\mathbf{v}$ in terms of the size of $\mbox{$\cal V$}$ and the dimension $n$. We prove a generalization of Sziklai and Weiner's Theorem. Our simple proof is based on Gröbner basis theory.
