Abstract:A slip boundary has been shown to have a significant impact on flow past bluff bodies. In this work and using a circular cylinder as a model system, the effects of various slip configurations on the passing flow are investigated. A theoretical analysis using matched-asymptotic expansion is first performed in the small-Reynolds number regime following Stokes and Oseen. A slip boundary condition is shown to lead to only higher-order effects (~1/ln(Re)) on the resulting drag coefficient. For higher Reynolds numbers (100–500), the effects of five types of symmetric slip boundary conditions, namely, no slip, fore-side slip, aft-side slip, flank slip, and all slip on the flow field and pertinent parameters are investigated with numerical simulations. Detailed results on the flow structure and force distribution are presented. Flank slip is found to have the best effect for drag reduction with comparable coverage of slip area. For asymmetric slip distributions, torque and lift are found to generally occur.

Abstract:Liquid film flow over triangular corrugations is investigated by simulations and experiments. The volume of fluid (VOF) method is used to track the free surface between the liquid and gas in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. In the experiments, a sCMOS camera is applied to capture the film flow in a channel. The comparison of the results from three-dimensional (3-D) simulations and experiments shows good agreement. To validate the simulations quantitatively, two-dimensional (2-D) simulations are carried out and the velocity profiles in the liquid film flow field are compared with experimental results. With the validated model, a series of numerical investigations of liquid film flow over triangular corrugations are accomplished. Resonance between the free surface and the corrugations is found when the Reynolds number (Re) of the liquid flow reaches a certain value. When resonance occurs, the amplitude of the waves on the free surface gets the maximum but eddies in the troughs of the corrugations are suppressed. The steepness effect of the corrugations is also investigated. No relationship between the steepness and the resonance could be observed, but steeper corrugations can cause undulations with higher amplitude on the free surface in the low Re range. To investigate the surface tension effect, the inverse of Bond number is introduced. It is found that the inverse Bond number (Bo(-1)) has a direct relation to the resonance phenomenon. Film flow with a lower Bo(-1) value encounters the resonance at a lower Re value. Since the velocity component normal to the corrugated plate plays a significant role during the convection of mass transfer in film flow, the normal flow intensity is investigated. A local maximum of the normal flow intensity is found at the resonance point.

Abstract:This paper investigates the impact of real surface roughness on channel flow using direct numerical simulation assisted by a ghost cell immersed boundary method (DNS-GCIBM). The principles and implementations of DNS-GCIBM are first introduced. Two test cases, including the two-dimensional flow around a cylinder and the three-dimensional flow in a sinusoidal roughness channel are employed to demonstrate the practicability and accuracy of the proposed approach, especially in numerical studies on the rough wall-bounded flow. Using DNS-GCIBM, channel flows under conditions of Ma = 0.3 and Reτ≈300, with both the real-world and regular roughness surfaces are studied. The results are statistically analyzed using the triple decomposition technique. The outer layer similarity in the streamwise mean velocity and Reynolds stress profiles indicate that the impact of roughness on the boundary layer primarily localizes within roughness sub-layer. In the streamwise mean velocity profile, both regular and real-world roughness surfaces induce obvious increase to the roughness function ΔU+ as roughness height Ra increases, while discrepancy of ΔU+ between the two types of roughness can be found. Furthermore, turbulence statistics are sensitive to the variations of Ra. As Ra increases, it becomes challenging to organize coherent structures near the wall, resulting in the reduction of streamwise Reynolds stress intensity. In addition, although the skin friction coefficient and ΔU+ are almost the same, the real-world roughness and the corresponding equivalent regular roughness manifest different flow structures near the wall. The real-world roughness contributes greater spatial inhomogeneity but lower turbulence intensity.

Abstract:We present an experimental investigation aimed at understanding the effects of surface roughness on the time-mean drag coefficient ( ) of finite-span cylinders ( , ) freely rolling without slip on an inclined plane. While lubrication theory predicts an infinite drag force for ideally smooth cylinders in contact with a smooth surface, experiments yield finite drag coefficients. We propose that surface roughness introduces an effective gap ( ) resulting in a finite drag force while allowing physical contact between the cylinder and the plane. This study combines measurements of surface roughness for both the cylinder and the plane panel to determine a total relative roughness ( ) that can effectively describe at the point of contact. It is observed that the measured increases as decreases, aligning with predictions of lubrication theory. Furthermore, the measured approximately matches combined analytical and numerical predictions for a smooth cylinder and plane when the imposed gap is approximately equal to the mean peak roughness ( ) for rough cylinders, and one standard deviation peak roughness ( ) for relatively smooth cylinders. As the time-mean Reynolds number ( ) increases, the influence of surface roughness on decreases, indicating that wake drag becomes dominant at higher . The cylinder aspect ratio ( ) is found to have only a minor effect on . Flow visualisations are also conducted to identify critical flow transitions and these are compared with visualisations previously obtained numerically. Variations in have little effect on the cylinder wake. Instead, was observed to have a more pronounced effect on the flow structures observed. The Strouhal number ( ) associated with the cylinder wake shedding was observed to increase with , while demonstrating little dependence on .

Turbulent flow of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids in rough channels: Part I: Roughness effect on Newtonian fluids

Abstract:Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of turbulent channel flow at a shear Reynolds number of $Re_{*}=360$ for Newtonian and Herschel-Bulkley fluids in smooth and rough channels has been performed. The rough surface was made of irregular undulations modeled with the immersed surface method. The rough surface was such that the ratio of the channel half-height to the RMS roughness height is 48, and the RMS and the maximum crest and trough heights are 7.5 and 23 wall units, respectively. This part, limited to Newtonian turbulent flows, has demonstrated the generic nature of the rough surface that is ideal for studying non-Newtonian flows in practical applications. The results confirm that turbulence in the outer layer is not directly affected by the rough surface. The roughness effects on the turbulence quantities are confined to the layer between 0 and 25 wall units; beyond which, the profiles collapse with those for smooth pipes. In the roughness sublayer, the streamwise normal Reynolds stress is reduced while the spanwise and wall-normal components are increased. The Reynolds shear stress increases significantly, causing a proportional increase in turbulence production near the wall affecting the dominant terms in the turbulent kinetic energy budget. The friction factor using the Colebrook-White correlation calculated by specifying the sand-grain roughness as 7.5 wall units predicts the friction velocity and the bulk velocity accurately. The streaky structures that exist near smooth walls were observed to be broken by the roughness elements, leading to a denser population of coherent structures near the wall, which increase the velocity fluctuations. The coherent structures developed in the roughness layer do not seem to penetrate in to the outer layer, and no evidence could be found as to the direct impact of the roughness layer on the outer one.

Abstract:Flow modulation mechanism in a cylinder with corrugated surfaces is investigated by wind tunnel experiments at Reynolds number Re=25 600. Experimental results include surface pressure measurement for the cylinder wall and particle image velocimetry (PIV) for the wake flow. A pair of corrugated surfaces are symmetrically installed on the cylinder wall. Corrugated surfaces are distributed at three different locations on the cylinder wall, i.e., the windward part (case 1), leeward part (case 2), and lateral part (case 3). Experimental results show that corrugated surfaces can modify surface pressure, aerodynamic forces, and vorticity evolution of the cylinder flow. Compared with the natural cylinder (baseline case), the mean drag and fluctuating lift forces of case 1 are reduced by 58% and 82%, which are optimal among all test cases. Flow modulation effects of case 2 on global cylinder wake flow are unobvious and that of case 3 are between cases 1 and 2. Corrugated surfaces can also modify modal properties of proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of the cylinder wake. Moreover, characteristics of recirculation bubbles, velocity deficits, turbulence kinetic energy, and Reynolds stresses in the wake are all modulated. The main flow modulation mechanism is that shear-layer shapes and streamline distributions near the corrugated surfaces are changed based on zoom-in PIV results on the cylinder near-wall region.

Abstract:We have studied the effect of surface topography, fluid behavior, and rotation on fluid flow and heat transfer phenomena over a cylinder. In this study, we have incorporated a sinusoidal surface topography to account for the impact of surface patterns and a power-law model to include fluid behavior. The governing equations are solved numerically for a range of pattern frequency (ω=5 and 11), pattern amplitude (δ=0.01 and 0.1), power-law index (0.4≤n≤1.6), Prandtl number (1≤Pr≤100), rotational speed (0.5≤α≤2), and Reynolds number (5≤Re≤40). In particular, the study aims to determine the degree to which various macroscopic parameters, such as the drag and lift coefficients, the average Nusselt number in relation to the Reynolds number, the Prandtl number, the rotating speed, and the power-law index, vary. In this range of Reynolds number, the flow around a circular cylinder is steady, with two symmetric vortices in the rear side. The sliding mesh method is used to deal with dynamic interface between solid and fluid. The streamlines are drawn to visualize the flow field around the patterned cylinder. For a non-rotating patterned cylinder, small recirculation zones are observed over the trough, which are absent in circular cylinders. The size of these recirculation regions increases on increase in Reynolds number and power-law index. On adding rotation to the cylinder, these recirculation zones move away from the cylinder and appear over the crest. On increasing the rotating speed of the cylinder, the frontal vortices disappear. The enveloping vortex gets larger with increase in rotating speed and power-law index. The size of the rear detached vortex increases with power-law index and Reynolds number and decreases with rotating speed. It is observed that the results are contrasted with the previous studies on smooth circular cylinder. The drag force acting on the patterned cylinder is seen to be reduced. Compared to a circular cylinder, a significant reduction in drag can be achieved by choosing suitable value of pattern frequency (ω) and amplitude (δ). Overall, there is a decrease in the amount of drag reduction as the Reynolds number increases. The behavior of the fluid has a considerable influence on the reduction of drag. It has been observed that shear-thickening fluid significantly contributes to the enhancement of drag reduction. For a higher value of pattern frequency and amplitude (ω=11,δ=0.1), the drag force reduces significantly for Newtonian and shear-thickening fluids at higher rotating speed (α=2). Also, the pattern frequency and amplitude substantially impact the average Nusselt number. On increase in pattern frequency and amplitude, a progressive decrease in the average Nusselt number is observed. Compared to shear-thinning and Newtonian fluid, shear-thickening fluid exhibits a greater reduction in average Nusselt number. One correlation is provided at the end to show the relationship between the average Nusselt number, the Prandtl number, the Reynolds number, the rotating speed, and the power-law index.

Abstract:Abstract Components with internal passages created using some laser-sintering based, additive manufacturing (AM) systems can exhibit anisotropic surface features with an appearance of three-dimensional roughness superimposed on two-dimensional, rib-like features. This paper presents an investigation of flow over roughness representing internal cooling passages printed at different angles to the AM printing plane. A roughness geometry was acquired using an X-ray tomography scan of a direct-metal-laser-sintering (DMLS) created coupon with internal cooling passages. The base surface scan was then used to create four surfaces with notional rib-like features positioned at different angles relative to the spanwise flow direction. The flow resistance of each surface was measured using the roughness internal flow tunnel. The mean flow velocity profiles for the cases with ReDh ≤ 30,000 were characterized using a four-camera, tomographic, and particle tracking system. The results demonstrate roughness orientation effects include (1) reduced bulk flow resistance as the alignment angle from the spanwise direction increases, (2) generated flow in the spanwise direction and increased tunnel flow swirl as the alignment angle increases, and (3) velocity profile changes as the flow migrates away from the rough side of the tunnel to the opposing smooth wall. The particle tracking system also demonstrates that the mean streamwise flow profiles change significantly between the 30 deg and 45 deg roughness orientations. Finally, the equivalent sandgrain roughness measurements for the four surfaces were found to follow the trends predicted using the correlations of Bons (2002, “St and cf Augmentation for Real Turbine Roughness With Elevated Freestream Turbulence,” ASME J. Turbomach., 124(4), pp. 632–644.) and Sigal and Danberg (1990, “New Correlation of Roughness Density Effect on the Turbulent Boundary Layer,” AIAA J., 28(3), pp. 554–556.).

Abstract:Fluid flow and pressure drop across a channel are significantly influenced by surface roughness on a channel wall. The present study investigates the effects of periodically structured surface roughness upon flow field and pressure drop in a circular pipe at low Reynolds numbers. The periodic roughness considered exhibits sinusoidal, triangular, and rectangular morphologies, with the relative roughness (i.e., ratio of the amplitude of surface roughness to hydraulic diameter of the pipe) no more than 0.2. Based upon a revised perturbation theory, a theoretical model is developed to quantify the effect of roughness on fully developed Stokes flow in the pipe. The ratio of static flow resistivity and the ratio of the Darcy friction factor between rough and smooth pipes are expressed in four-order approximate formulations, which are validated against numerical simulation results. The relative roughness and the wave number are identified as the two key parameters affecting the static flow resistivity and the Darcy friction factor.
Cavitation suppression and transformation of turbulence structure in the cross flow around a circular cylinder: Surface morphology and wettability effects

Abstract:Passive methods of flow and cavitation control appear to offer some of the best prospects in the field of hydraulic engineering and marine applications. In this article, we aimed at an experimental examination of the effect of wall roughness/wettability on the occurrence of cavitation and turbulence structure in the cross flow around and in the wake of a circular cylinder in two characteristic regimes. For this, we used three test bodies with different surface morphologies: smooth (reference), micro-scale irregularities (rough) and regular large-scale (of the order of a millimeter) texture (finned). Using high-speed imaging to observe vapor cavities, we revealed that cavitation is noticeably suppressed by both types of roughness. Applying the method of vapor phase detection (Pervunin et al., 2021), this finding was then quantitatively confirmed through an in-depth analysis of an ensemble of instantaneous velocity fields measured by PIV, indicating that modification of wall morphology is an effective method of cavitation control. The procedure of statistical vector filtration (Heinz et al., 2004) allowed us to remove outliers from the velocity fields and, thus, calculate various turbulence characteristics, including higher-order moments (i.e., the coefficients of skewness and excess). Wall irregularities were found to significantly affect the turbulence structure of the wake flow, but the higher-order moments downstream of the modified-surface cylinders turned out to be unexpectedly insensitive to a change in the flow regime, as opposed to the smooth one. Regardless of the type of surface morphology, the influence of roughness on the mechanism of formation of large-scale vortices and their characteristics was weakened. However, it caused overall disorganization of liquid motion in the cylinder wake, thus making local flow conditions highly unsteady. In addition, this process became more chaotic with an increase in the scale of irregularities.

Abstract:It has been shown experimentally over nearly 80 years that surface fine roughness of circular pipes has a crucial effect on the natural transition to turbulence. In this Letter, a theoretical explanation is suggested for the roughness-induced instability. Once the nonlinear effect of roughness is introduced (through a pipe with fine corrugation surface), the mean velocity profile becomes unstable to three-dimensional, asymmetric, and helical traveling waves at moderate Reynolds numbers. The threshold of the aspect ratio or shape factor of the roughness element required to cause instability scales as Re(-2). Inspired by the current model, a scaling form is proposed and the scaled friction factor measurements in rough pipes collapse onto a universal curve.
Direct numerical simulation of open-channel flow over a fully-rough wall at moderate relative submergence

Abstract:Direct numerical simulation of open-channel flow over a bed of spheres arranged in a regular pattern has been carried out at bulk Reynolds number and roughness Reynolds number (based on sphere diameter) of approximately 6900 and 120, respectively, for which the flow regime is fully-rough. The open-channel height was approximately 5.5 times the diameter of the spheres. Extending the results obtained by Chan-Braun et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 684, 2011, 441) for an open-channel flow in the transitionally-rough regime, the present purpose is to show how the flow structure changes as the fully-rough regime is attained and, for the first time, to enable a direct comparison with experimental observations. The results indicate that, in the vicinity of the roughness elements, the average flow field is affected both by Reynolds number effects and by the geometrical features of the roughness, while at larger wall-distances this is not the case, and roughness concepts can be applied. The flow-roughness interaction occurs mostly in the region above the virtual origin of the velocity profile, and the effect of form-induced velocity fluctuations is maximum at the level of sphere crests. The spanwise length scale of turbulent velocity fluctuations in the vicinity of the sphere crests shows the same dependence on the distance from the wall as that observed over a smooth wall, and both vary with Reynolds number in a similar fashion. Moreover, the hydrodynamic force and torque experienced by the roughness elements are investigated. Finally, the possibility either to adopt an analogy between the hydrodynamic forces associated with the interaction of turbulent structures with a flat smooth wall or with the surface of the spheres is also discussed, distinguishing the skin-friction from the form-drag contributions both in the transitionally-rough and in the fully-rough regimes.

Surface roughness effects on transonic aircraft performance: experimental/numerical comparisons

Abstract:This work highlights the necessity of taking into account surface roughness when conducting experimental tests, and when using numerical simulations to precisely calculate the turbulent lift and drag of wind-tunnel models or real aircraft in transonic conditions. The present article is a continuation of "Turbulent drag induced by low surface roughness at transonic speeds: Experimental/numerical comparisons," Physics of Fluids, Vol. 32, 045108 (2020) by Hue and Molton. The outcomes of this former study, which was focused on flat plate samples, are here applied to a three-dimensional aircraft configuration: the Common Research Model used as a reference in the recent international Drag Prediction Workshops. Experimental campaigns have been performed in the largest ONERA wind tunnels S1MA and S2MA involving models with average surface roughness heights Ra close to 0.5 micrometers, wingspans up to 3.5 meters, Mach and Reynolds numbers up to 0.95 and 5 million respectively. Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes computations based on the wind-tunnel tests have then been carried out, using the equivalent sand-grain roughness height approach as well as a Musker-type correlation to determine relevant k s values. The results of both the experimental and numerical campaigns have demonstrated that the aerodynamic coefficients of the aircraft can be significantly affected by the surface roughness, even with roughness Reynolds numbers k s + potentially below the usual threshold values sometimes considered in engineering applications (i.e. in the order of 3.5 to 5). In particular, the surface roughness effects on lift and drag have been studied using far-field analyses to evaluate the responses of friction, viscous pressure, wave and lift-induced drag components. Finally, the numerical studies have been extended to the full-scale geometry in flight conditions in order to assess the roughness effects and potential gains in realistic aircraft operating conditions.

Abstract:Roughness characterization is important for modeling its effects in simulations and engineering tools. A common approximation is that the physical roughness height is equivalent to the sand grain height. However, this can lead to under- or over-prediction of flow quantities such as the wall shear stress and heat flux. In this work two rough surfaces were evaluated for flow modifications in a fully-developed turbulent channel flow. The first was a hexagonal, dimpled geometry meant to represent an ablated thermal protection system surface. The second surface was an unstructured granular surface with nominally the same roughness height as the dimpled surface. Differences from classical sand grain behavior were observed for both surfaces, with overall higher surface shear stress and larger shifts in the log-law when compared to smooth-wall cases. Conformance to Townsend's hypothesis for the mean flow and velocity variance was only observed between the two rough surfaces in the outer layer for similar Reynolds numbers. An investigation into outer-layer flow structures using spectral maps indicated a significant decrease in larger-wavelength energy far from the wall for both rough surfaces. This departure from pure Townsend-like behavior in the outer-flow suggests that other roughness length scales are important for both surface geometries when modeling the transport and exchange of mass and energy between the surface and free-stream.

Abstract:The existence of roughness changes the surface conditions of a cylindrical structure and hence influences its hydrodynamic properties. The present study focused on the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) responses of circular cylinders covered with different roughness heights and coverage ratios. Three relatively large roughness heights (k/D = 5%, 10% and 20%) and three coverage ratios (CR = 20%, 46%, and 79%) were considered. Cylinders with hemispherical roughness were prepared through 3D printing and were tested in a wind tunnel to examine their VIV characteristics. It is found that the surface roughness can effectively suppress the VIV responses and narrow the lock-on region. Specifically, the VIV suppression effects are improved by increasing the roughness height and by reducing the roughness coverage ratio based on the cases covered in this study. A maximum VIV reduction of 53% compared to that of the smooth cylinder can be achieved for a rough cylinder with k/D = 20% and CR = 20%. To further explore the physical mechanisms for VIV reduction by different coverage ratios, wake characteristics of cylinders covered with k/D = 10% and the above three coverage ratios were examined using particle image velocimetry (PIV) in a water flume. The results show that with the increase in CR, the vortex formation length increases, and the Strouhal number reduces gradually. In addition, with the increase in CR, the magnitudes of the turbulent kinetic energy and the Reynolds stresses also increase. This is because the increase in CR motivates the formation of the large-scale coherent structures in the wake.

Abstract:Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are performed for two wall-bounded flow configurations: laminar Couette flow at $Re=740$ and turbulent channel flow at $Re_{\tau}=180$, where $\tau$ is the shear stress at the wall. The top wall is smooth and the bottom wall is a realistically rough superhydrophobic surface (SHS), generated from a three-dimensional surface profile measurement. The air-water interface, which is assumed to be flat, is simulated using the volume-of-fluid (VOF) approach. The laminar Couette flow is studied with varying interface heights $h$ to understand the effect on slip and drag reduction ($DR$). The presence of the surface roughness is felt up to $40\%$ of the channel height in the wall-normal direction. A nonlinear dependence of $DR$ on $h$ is observed with three distinct regions. The DNS results are used to obtain a nonlinear curve fit for gas fraction $\phi_g$ as a function of $h$, where $\phi_g$ determines the amount of slip area exposed to the flow. A power law linear regression fit is used to obtain $b_{eff}$ as a function of $\phi_g$. For the turbulent channel flow, statistics of the flow field are compared to that of a smooth wall to understand the effects of roughness and $h$. Two interface heights, $h=h_{rms}$ and $h=h_{max}$ are simulated to study their effect on the behaviour of the flow, where $h_{rms}$ and $h_{max}$ are the rms and maximum peak of the roughness heights respectively. Results show that the presence of trapped air in the cavities significantly alters near wall flow physics. The fully wetted roughness increases the peak value in turbulent intensities, whereas the presence of the interface suppresses them. Overall, there exists a competing effect between the interface and the asperities, where the interface suppresses turbulence whereas the asperities enhance them.

Abstract:Turbulent flows over rough surfaces can be encountered in a wide range of engineering applications. Despite the progress made after several decades of studies, the prediction of drag and roughness function from the surface geometrical parameters remains an open question. Several methods have shown encouraging results. However, they lack generality and present some scatter in the data. In this paper we propose a new parameter, the effective distribution ( ), which lays foundation on the effective slope with some changes to take into account the sheltering effect of large roughness elements and the drag induced by pinnacles higher than the average roughness elements. To develop this new correlation between geometrical features of the wall and the drag, we performed a set of simulations of the turbulent flow over a rough surface made of triangular elements varying their height and spatial distribution. The correlates quite well both with the drag and the roughness function for a wide range of cases having different mean roughness height, skewness and kurtosis. To further validate the , and assessing how it can be generalized to real rough wall, an irregular wall made from the superposition of random sinusoidal function was considered. Results were consistent with the correlation here presented.

Abstract:Shape modification has been one of the effective ways of manipulating the flow past bluff bodies. Aiming at exploration of the flow control mechanisms of shape modified circular cylinders, a series of numerical simulations are conducted at the Reynolds number of 5000. The modifications adopted in the current paper could be divided into two categories, the 2-dimensional cross-sectional modifications (polygonal and ridged) and 3-dimensional span-wise modifications (linear wavy, sinusoidal wavy and O-ringed). By exploiting the numerical data obtained from the Large Eddy Simulations, several aspects, including the wake flow properties, the aerodynamic forces, the flow instabilities and span-wise correlations are compared in detail. The two wavy cylinders are found to modify the flow wake significantly, leading to considerable reduction in aerodynamic forces. The polygonal and ridged cylinders, however, are of no such effect in aerodynamic force mitigation. The O-rings only have slight effect on the flow wake and the forces. As for the flow instabilities, the modifications adopted in this paper barely affects the Kármán vortex shedding frequency. The shear layer frequency, however, differs from case to case. Particularly, in the cases of the two wavy cylinders, disparity exists in the shear layer frequency at the node and saddle. This is explained by the boundary layer properties at separation. While recognizing the insufficiency in the span-wise length of the cylinders, the span-wise correlations of the aerodynamic forces are inspected. It is found that the lift forces of the 3-dimensional cylinders are generally less correlated than that of the 2-dimensional ones.

Abstract:The circular cylinder with porous materials coating (PMC) is studied in detail to reveal the sensitivity of surface permeability to the flow control and noise reduction. Two-dimensional simulations were firstly used to identify the critical values of permeability and thickness. Parametric study results show that, there is a critical permeability value which produces the minimum force fluctuation and maximum noise reduction. Additionally, the porous coating can work more efficient for noise reduction with larger thickness. The further three-dimensional simulation is employed to understand the underlying physical mechanisms of flow control. The results show that the spanwise vorticity is modified more than that of other directions and behaves more synergistically. The pressure field adjacent to the cylinder surface indicates that the adverse pressure gradient is changed to the favorable pressure gradient around the porous surface which contributes partly to the vortex shedding suppression.
