Abstract:This paper presents a novel sensing methodology with an unscented Kalman-based fusion algorithm for attitude estimation,using inexpensive MEMs gyroscopes,sun sensor and magnetometer.Considering the potential failure mode,the back-up filter algorithm using only magnetometer is proposed.Three-component modified Rodrigues parameters are used to describe attitude vector,which avoids the singularity of the covariance matrix when using unit quaternion in attitude determination.Using the ground test of gyro drift data,hardware-in-loop simulation shows that the proposed methodology can obtain fine attitude estimation,even only magnetometer is available,the back-up filter can still meets the requirements of the ordinary mission.The work shows profound meaning in the engineering application.This paper can be seen as a positive exploration of low precision MEMS sensors application to low cost pico-satellite.

Abstract:In this paper, a micro attitude determination system with a novel attitude estimating algorithm used among the aerial Held is proposed based on low cost MEMS inertial sensors, including MEMS rate gyros, MEMS accelerometer and MEMS magnetometers. This paper presents the attitude estimating algorithm based on the error quaternion formulation, whereby the error quaternion is selected to compose the state vector that is updated by output of MEMS rate gyros. In order to estimate the attitude during high dynamic maneuvers, the earth's magnetic field and the effective part of gravity along the motion direction as the two measured quantities are introduced as virtual measurements in the extended Kalman filter ( EKF) which decreases short-term errors. Simulation and flight experimental results indicate that attitude quaternion is determined with standard deviations below 5°even in high dynamics and 0. 7°in static state.
MEMS Gyro and Magnetometer Based Attitude Determination System for Pico and Nano-Satellites

Abstract:For Pico and Nano-satellites which can hardly configure high-precision attitude sensors,the sensor combi-nation of MEMS gyro and magnetometer has become an important guarantee of satellite in-orbit attitude measurement, especially when sun-sensor is not available. Based on this low-cost,all-orbit,all day,and minimum sensor combina-tion,a filter system was proposed suitable for on-orbit operation. In this system,a sliding window ARMA modeling is used to reduce the gyro random noise,and the gyro bias is removed online by the attitude filter to ensure the long-term validity of the mathematical model. Based on the on-board sensors and algorithms of ZDPS-2 satellite,and combined with the on-orbit data,the simulation results show that the proposed filter system can effectively reduce the random noise of gyro,and the suppression ratio is more than 50％. The accuracy of gyro bias estimation is improved by 310％, reaching 0.001 °/s,and the accuracy of attitude estimation is improved by 190％to 1.2127°. The proposed system can be a useful exploration and a practical design for Pico and Nano-satellite attitude determination.
Constrained Filtering Method for MAV Attitude Determination

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a novel attitude measurement algorithm that gives the Euler angles based on MEMS sensors including three rate gyros, three magnetometers and one. accelerometer. Six elements of the direction cosine matrix are selected to compose a state vector. Only four elements are independent, because there exists two nonlinear constraints. They are introduced as virtual measurements in the Kalman filter. The filter can be improved by introducing heading differential speed signal. Bias of Simulation results indicates that the Euler angles can be determined with standard deviations at 1-3 degree even during high dynamic maneuvers and long turns. Flight tests have been carried out in a miniature UAV, The Euler angles' in which the method is proved to be valid in high dynamic maneuver. © 2005 IEEE.
A Dual-Linear Kalman Filter for Real-Time Orientation Determination System Using Low-Cost MEMS Sensors

Abstract:To provide a long-time reliable orientation, sensor fusion technologies are widely used to integrate available inertial sensors for the low-cost orientation estimation. In this paper, a novel dual-linear Kalman filter was designed for a multi-sensor system integrating MEMS gyros, an accelerometer, and a magnetometer. The proposed filter precludes the impacts of magnetic disturbances on the pitch and roll which the heading is subjected to. The filter can achieve robust orientation estimation for different statistical models of the sensors. The root mean square errors (RMSE) of the estimated attitude angles are reduced by 30.6% under magnetic disturbances. Owing to the reduction of system complexity achieved by smaller matrix operations, the mean total time consumption is reduced by 23.8%. Meanwhile, the separated filter offers greater flexibility for the system configuration, as it is possible to switch on or off the second stage filter to include or exclude the magnetometer compensation for the heading. Online experiments were performed on the homemade miniature orientation determination system (MODS) with the turntable. The average RMSE of estimated orientation are less than 0.4° and 1° during the static and low-dynamic tests, respectively. More realistic tests on two-wheel self-balancing vehicle driving and indoor pedestrian walking were carried out to evaluate the performance of the designed MODS when high accelerations and angular rates were introduced. Test results demonstrate that the MODS is applicable for the orientation estimation under various dynamic conditions. This paper provides a feasible alternative for low-cost orientation determination.

Abstract:The attitude information is one of the most important parameters in flight control systems.This paper describes an attitude measurement system based on a MEMS multi-sensor.The data from 3-axis MEMS accelerators and 3-axis MEMS gyros is used to determine the pitch angle and the roll angle of the air vehicle using an extended Kalman filter(EKF) equation deduced from the direction cosine matrix.An expert system was designed to estimate the vehicle motion to adjust the measurement noise matrix of the extended Kalman filter equation so that the system can be used in dynamic as well as static environments.The measured airspeed and altitude are also used to revise the pitch angle.The heading is determined from GPS information.Test results compare well with an imported commercial autopilot in a static test with less accurate results in a dynamic test.

Abstract:Orientation estimation using low cost sensors is an important task for Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) in order to obtain a good feedback for the attitude controller. The challenges come from the low accuracy and noisy data of the MicroElectroMechanical System (MEMS) technology, which is the basis of modern, miniaturized inertial sensors. In this article, we describe a novel approach to obtain an estimation of the orientation in quaternion form from the observations of gravity and magnetic field. Our approach provides a quaternion estimation as the algebraic solution of a system from inertial/magnetic observations. We separate the problems of finding the "tilt" quaternion and the heading quaternion in two sub-parts of our system. This procedure is the key for avoiding the impact of the magnetic disturbances on the roll and pitch components of the orientation when the sensor is surrounded by unwanted magnetic flux. We demonstrate the validity of our method first analytically and then empirically using simulated data. We propose a novel complementary filter for MAVs that fuses together gyroscope data with accelerometer and magnetic field readings. The correction part of the filter is based on the method described above and works for both IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) and MARG (Magnetic, Angular Rate, and Gravity) sensors. We evaluate the effectiveness of the filter and show that it significantly outperforms other common methods, using publicly available datasets with ground-truth data recorded during a real flight experiment of a micro quadrotor helicopter.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel sensing methodology with an extended Kalman-based fusion algorithm for attitude estimation, using inexpensive micromachined gyroscopes, accelerometers and magnetometers. Unlike conventional methodology using quaternions and Euler angles, in the proposed fusion algorithm the state vector is defined to be a 6×1 vector containing sensing components of earth gravity and magnetic field in the body frame. By this way, the Kalman model can be represented by linear equations, which makes the iterative computations easy to be implemented at a faster rate using inexpensive microprocessors. The computation of the filter is further simplified by updating gravity and magnetic vectors respectively in smaller dimension. Experiments are performed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:With the development of new technologies and market demand changing, MEMS gyroscope has been widely used. But low accuracy, large drift and other defects limit its application in some areas. This paper presents an attitude fusion algorithm based on the MEMS gyroscope, MEMS accelerometer and MEMS magnetometer. Firstly, the error model of the MEMS gyroscope was established, and rotation vector method to determine the gyro attitude was introduced. Then the state equation and observation equation of the designed Kalman filter was derived. Finally, experimental results illustrated the effectiveness of the fusion algorithm. That is, with the proposed fusion attitude determination algorithm, it is able to compensate gyro drift and provide a reliable and stable attitude for a long time.
Low Cost Attitude Determination System for Accelerated Rigid Bodies

Abstract:Translational acceleration may affect accelerometer output and will result in performance reduction of accelerometer and magnetometer based attitude determination system. To compensate for the acceleration effect, the GPS-derived acceleration was introduced to correct the gravity field vector. An iterative least square attitude estimator was developped to determine the MRPs attitude from the gravity field and magnetic field vector observations. The attitude was then fused with the measurements of rate gyros using complementary filter. The experimental results have shown that the proposed attitude determination system can improve the measurement accuracy markedly during maneuvers, the measurement accuracy achieves 3°.

Abstract:Aiming at the dynamic attitude tracking system of vehicle motion, the vehicle attitude measurement and calculation are performed using a combination of three-axis accelerometer and three-axis gyroscope. Proposed a quaternion Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) algorithm for dynamic attitude tracking system. Through the Euler angle and quaternion transformation method, the attitude quaternion of the gyroscope is used as the state quantity of the EKF algorithm. The attitude quaternion calculated by the accelerometer is used as the observation quantity. And corrected by adaptive measurement noise covariance matrix. Established Kalman equation to obtain a high-precision attitude quaternion to solve the attitude angle. The experimental results show that the algorithm effectively solves the shortcomings of low accuracy and large error of MEMS sensors, and improves the accuracy of vehicle attitude tracking system.

Abstract:To obtain precise and continuous attitude information, this paper proposed a data fusion scheme that exploits the complementary advantages of a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) magnetic, angular rate, and gravity (MARG) sensor and a low-cost global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receiver. A quaternion-based error state Kalman filter is designed to integrate the different data sources, where the attitude error and gyro bias variation are taken as the error states. The gyro-measured angular rates are continuously integrated to propagate the attitude quaternion, while the accelerometer and magnetometer readings or the GNSS pitch and heading angles estimated by the precise carrier phase observations are utilized to perform the measurement update. The system kinematic model remains constant when the aiding source changes, only the measurement model alternates accordingly. A vehicular dynamical test was conducted to evaluate the proposed algorithm, the test results show that the attitude estimation accuracy of the integrated algorithm is apparently improved.

Abstract:The error characteristics of a typical commercial MEMS-IMU were analyzed. Using 15 ICM-42688 sensors, a 3*5 MEMS-IMU array was designed, and a weighted data fusion method based on Allan variance for the MEMS-IMU array was proposed. This effectively reduces the random measurement errors of the MEMS-IMU, providing a data foundation for the precise measurement of motion and attitude of robots, vehicles, aircraft, and other systems under low-cost conditions. The text describes a measurement method for non-stationary motion attitudes of sports vehicles based on adaptive Kalman-Mahony. Specifically, it first uses adaptive Kalman filtering on array sensor data to calculate the measurement noise in real-time and adaptively adjust the filtering gain. Then, it determines the compensation coefficient of the accelerometer to the gyroscope angular velocity based on the motion state of the vehicle, and solves the attitude through complementary filtering to obtain the motion attitude quaternion. Finally, it converts it into the roll angle, pitch angle, and yaw angle of the sports vehicle. Experimental results show that the proposed MEMS-IMU array weighted data fusion method based on Allan variance has significant advantages over traditional single MEMS-IUM methods and traditional average weighting methods in reducing sensor angle random walk and zero drift instability. The proposed adaptive Kalman-Mahony attitude measurement method also shows a significant improvement in the accuracy of non-stationary motion attitude measurement compared to traditional methods.

Abstract:Micro electro mechanical system (MEMS) inertial sensors have advantages, including small size and low power consumption. The performances of Micro Inertial measurement unit (IMU), which is composed of MEMS inertial sensors, degrade, and error, will become larger in high dynamic environment. In order to solve the problem, a novel combined calibration method for compensating the deterministic error of MEMS sensors is proposed. Considering the rotation of different sensitive axes in high dynamic and low dynamic environment, the compounded calibration based on fuzzy neural network (FNN) is adopted to identify the coupling coefficients to eliminate the adverse coupling effects between different rotation axes. Furthermore, the self-developed Micro IMU and magnetometer are applied in attitude estimation system. Considering the large attitude error occurred in most cases, the approach utilizing the estimation of error quaternion vector could avoid the calculation error due to inaccurate modeling in the skew symmetric matrix that comprises attitude error vector components. The intelligent Kalman filter (IKF) based on complexity state equation of error quaternion is designed to improve the performance by adjusting the parameters of filter on line. The experimental results show that the proposed approach could have a higher level of stability and accuracy in comparison to other attitude estimation algorithms.

Abstract:To satisfy the requirements of industry and civil use,attitude measurement system,based on MEMS accelerometer,gyroscope and magnetometer,is proposed.Unscented Kalman Filter(UKF)is used to fuse the data.To solve the drift of gyroscope and inaccuracy in dynamic using accelerometer and magnetometer unit,the UKF,based on rotation matrix,is addressed to combine the advantages of the two measurement methods and to overcome the faults of each other's.The accumulated errors are calibrated and the accuracy is improved in static state,and the faults in dynamic state are compensated.The experimental results show that the attitude system can achieve high accuracy.Since the data acquisition and filtering are implemented by the embedded system,our system can work in real time.

Abstract:Conventionally, the filtering technique for attitude estimation is performed using gyros or attitude dynamics models. In order to extend the application range of an attitude filter, this paper proposes a quaternion based filtering framework for gyroless attitude estimation without an attitude dynamics model. The attitude estimation system is established based on a quaternion kinematic equation and vector observation models. The angular velocity in the system is determined through observation vectors from attitude sensors and the statistical properties of the angular velocity error are analysed. A Kalman filter is applied to estimate the attitude error such that the effect from the angular velocity error is compensated with its statistical properties at each sampling moment. A numerical simulation example is presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Aiming at the requirement of attitude information module with high precision, small size and low power consumption for the control of miniature UAV, a practical attitude estimation algorithm based on the micro-electro-mechanical sensor is proposed in this paper, which realizes the accurate estimation of the attitude of the UAV under the condition of low acceleration. A low-cost MEMS gyroscope, accelerometer, and magnetometer are used in the system. The Euler angle is obtained by the state observer method based on Direction Cosine Matrix (DCM) which can be got by fusing the sensor data. Firstly, based on the basic idea of TRIAD algorithm, a method to determine the attitude rotation matrix by accelerometer and magnetometric measurement is proposed. Compared with the traditional method, this method does not have to calculate the inverse of the matrix. Secondly, a state observer is intended to estimate the attitude of the system. The state observer doesn't have to observe the bias of the gyroscope, but still ensures the convergence of the Euler angle. Finally, the simulation based on the actual sampling data of the MEMS sensor shows that the output of the state observer designed in this paper still has high accuracy and good dynamic characteristics under the condition of gyroscope noise and bias.

Abstract:Abstract Quadrotor UAV obtain the attitude calculation result from inertial measurement unit (IMU), but IMU has the the problems of high noise and low precision, to solve the problems, this paper first introduces the extended Kalman filter (EKF) and complementary filter, and uses them to filter the output of the accelerometer and magnetic sensor. The effects of the two methods are compared by static testing and dynamic testing. The results show that both filtering methods can improve the precision of the attitude angle solutions, but the EKF algorithm performs better.

Abstract:For overcoming low precision and easy to divergence of MEMS inertial measurement sensors of small size quad-rotor aircraft attitude measurement,a new data fusion method is designed to fuse the information from gyroscope,accelerometer and magnetometer.Use the MEMS inertial measurement components to construct a low-cost attitude heading measurement system,analyze the attitude estimation process and difficulties.Based on gradient descent,use attitude fusion algorithm to compensate quaternion updating equation.Experimental results show that the data fusion method based on the gradient descent algorithm is better than the Kalman filtering algorithm,and can significantly reduce the requirements of precision and speed for the processor,effectively fuse sensor data and improve the accuracy of attitude estimation of the small quad-rotor.

Abstract:<p>High-precision attitude estimation in real time plays a vital role in spacecraft flight. In this work, the attitude filtering using gyros and vector measurements is studied in the framework of the traditional multiplicative extended Kalman filtering (MEKF). An adaptive online kinematic modeling is proposed to aid the filtering, resulting in the so called adaptive kinematics-aided Kalman filtering (AKKF). Meanwhile, the state estimate is reset to be zeros and the covariance resetting is implemented accordingly at each step. Due to time-varying features of the attitude motion, a predetermined statistical model for the employed kinematic model cannot generally reflect the reality. So, the best invariant quadratic unbiased estimates (BIQUE) is adopted to adaptively tune the variance components in the employed kinematic model, to better model the realistic kinematic characteristics and hence to further improve the accuracy. Numerical simulation study indicates the reliability and accuracy of the proposed AKKF method.</p>
