Abstract:Atomic phase coherence (quantum interference) in a multilevel atomic gas exhibits a number of interesting phenomena. Such an atomic quantum coherence effect can be generalized to a quantum-dot molecular dielectric. Two quantum dots form a quantum-dot molecule, which can be described by a three-level.-configuration model {vertical bar 0 >, vertical bar 1 >, vertical bar 2 >}, i.e., the ground state of the molecule is the lower level vertical bar 0 > and the highly degenerate electronic states in the two quantum dots are the two upper levels vertical bar 1 >, vertical bar 2 >. The electromagnetic characteristics due to the vertical bar 0 >-vertical bar 1 > transition can be controllably manipulated by a tunable gate voltage (control field) that drives the vertical bar 2 >-vertical bar 1 > transition. When the gate voltage is switched on, the quantum-dot molecular state can evolve from one steady state (i.e., vertical bar 0 >-vertical bar 1 > two-level dressed state) to another steady state (i.e., three-level coherent-population-trapping state). In this process, the electromagnetic characteristics of a quantum-dot molecular dielectric, which is modified by the gate voltage, will also evolve. In this study, the transient evolutional behavior of the susceptibility of a quantum-dot molecular thin film and its reflection spectrum are treated by using the density matrix formulation of the multilevel systems. The present field-tunable and frequency-sensitive electromagnetic characteristics of a quantum-dot molecular thin film, which are sensitive to the applied gate voltage, can be utilized to design optical switching devices.
Coherence manipulations of Poisson-distributed coherent photons for the second-order intensity correlation

Abstract:Unlike one-photon (first order) intensity correlation, two-photon (second order) intensity correlation is known to be impossible to achieve by any classical means. Over the last several decades, such quantum features have been intensively demonstrated for anti-correlation in the Hong-Ou-Mandel effects and nonlocal correlation in Bell inequality violation. Here, we present coherence manipulations of attenuated laser light to achieve such a quantum feature using pure coherence optics. Unlike the common understanding of the two-photon intensity correlations, the present coherence approach gives an equivalent classical version to the known quantum approach. To excite the coherence quantum features between paired coherent photons, a selective measurement process plays an essential role in creating the inseparable joint phase relation between independent local parameters. The local randomness is also satisfied in both parties using orthonormal polarization bases of a single photon.

Abstract:Optical coherence tomography has become an important imaging technology in cardiology and ophthalmology, with other applications under investigations. Major advances in optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging are likely to occur through a quantum field approach to the technology. In this paper, which is the first part in a series on the topic, the quantum basis of OCT first order correlations is expressed in terms of full field quantization. Specifically first order correlations are treated as the linear sum of single photon interferences along indistinguishable paths. Photons and the electromagnetic (EM) field are described in terms of quantum harmonic oscillators. While the author feels the study of quantum second order correlations will lead to greater paradigm shifts in the field, addressed in part II, advances from the study of quantum first order correlations are given. In particular, ranging errors are discussed (with remedies) from vacuum fluctuations through the detector port, photon counting errors, and position probability amplitude uncertainty. In addition, the principles of quantum field theory and first order correlations are needed for studying second order correlations in part II.

Abstract:High-order quantum coherence reveals the statistical correlation of quantum particles. Manipulation of quantum coherence of light in the temporal domain enables the production of the single-photon source, which has become one of the most important quantum resources. High-order quantum coherence in the spatial domain plays a crucial role in a variety of applications, such as quantum imaging, holography, and microscopy. However, the active control of second-order spatial quantum coherence remains a challenging task. Here we predict theoretically and demonstrate experimentally the first active manipulation of second-order spatial quantum coherence, which exhibits the capability of switching between bunching and anti-bunching, by mapping the entanglement of spatially structured photons. We also show that signal processing based on quantum coherence exhibits robust resistance to intensity disturbance. Our findings not only enhance existing applications but also pave the way for broader utilization of higher-order spatial quantum coherence.

Abstract:The first- and second-order wave-particle dualities for two-photon states are investigated in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. These duality relations are experimentally tested through two-photon pure states and two-photon mixed states. The experimental results are in full agreement with the theoretical predictions. The optical fields exhibiting the same first-order particlelike and wavelike behaviors may carry entirely different second-order duality information, which implies that the higher-order duality relations are a useful tool for analyzing the wave-particle duality for multiphoton states.

Abstract:Light is known to exhibit quantum uncertainty in terms of its amplitude, phase, and polarization. However, quantum uncertainty related to coherence, which is also a fundamental physical property of light, has not been considered to date. Here, we formulate and explore the concept of quantum optical coherence uncertainty. We focus on the first-order coherence of the simplest possible light field, a purely monochromatic plane wave, which is classically completely stable. Starting from a scalar treatment, we show that the field displays zero coherence uncertainty only for a number state. We then proceed to the vectorial regime and establish that any state leads to coherence fluctuations, governed by a set of uncertainty relations depending on the polarization state and space-time points. Our work thus provides fundamental insights into the quantum character of optical coherence, with potential benefits in applications using highly sensitive interferometric and polarimetric techniques.

Abstract:AbstractThe array of coupled optical waveguides, which is also viewed as a photonic lattice, can exhibit abundant photonic band structures depending on the desired spatial arrangements of involved waveguides. Studies of photonic lattices are usually performed in solid‐state materials, where the required periodic susceptibilities can be achieved by employing the femtosecond laser direct‐writing or optical induction method, and have spawned flourishing achievements in manipulating the behaviors of light. Recently, the concept of electromagnetically induced photonic lattice (EIPL) is proposed under the well‐known electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in coherently prepared multilevel alkali‐metal atomic systems, where the strong coupling beams producing EIT possess spatially periodic intensity profiles. The inherited instantaneous tunability of susceptibility from EIT‐modulated atomic coherence allows for the easy reconfigurability of EIPLs, which gives rise to exotic beam dynamics under such a readily controllable framework. This paper summarizes the historical overview and recent advances of the in situ and all‐optically reconfigurable EIPLs. The Introduction section provides the scheme and formation of the EIPL via atomic coherence. The following sections review the recently demonstrated dynamical properties of light in various 1D and 2D EIPLs and in compound EIPLs built by two coupling fields. The final section gives brief concluding remarks.

Abstract:Non-equilibrium photon correlations of coherently excited single quantum systems can reveal their internal quantum dynamics and provide spectroscopic access. Here we propose and discuss the fundamentals of a coherent photon coincidence spectroscopy based on the application of laser pulses with variable delay and the detection of an time-averaged two-photon coincidence rate. For demonstration, two simple but important cases, i.e., an exciton - biexciton in a quantum dot and two coupled quantum emitters, are investigated based on quantum dynamics simulations demonstrating that this nonlinear spectroscopy reveals information specific to the particular single quantum system.

Abstract:Quantum interference and quantum correlation, as two main features of quantum optics, play an essential role in quantum information applications, such as multi-particle quantum walk and boson sampling. While many experimental demonstrations have been done in one-dimensional waveguide arrays, it remains unexplored in higher dimensions due to tight requirement of manipulating and detecting photons in large-scale. Here, we experimentally observe non-classical correlation of two identical photons in a fully coupled two-dimensional structure, i.e. photonic lattice manufactured by three-dimensional femtosecond laser writing. Photon interference consists of 36 Hong-Ou-Mandel interference and 9 bunching. The overlap between measured and simulated distribution is up to $0.890\pm0.001$. Clear photon correlation is observed in the two-dimensional photonic lattice. Combining with controllably engineered disorder, our results open new perspectives towards large-scale implementation of quantum simulation on integrated photonic chips.

Abstract:Compared to classical optical coherence theory based on Maxwell's electromagnetic theory and Glauber's quantum optical coherence theory based on matrix mechanics formulation of quantum mechanics, quantum optical coherence theory based on Feynman's path integral formulation of quantum mechanics provides a novel tool to study optical coherence. It has the advantage of understanding the connection between mathematical calculations and physical interpretations better. Quantum optical coherence theory based on Feynman's path integral is introduced and reviewed in this paper. Based on the results of transient first-order interference of two independent light beams, it is predicted that the classical model for electric field of thermal light introduced by classical optical textbooks may not be accurate. The physics of two-photon bunching of thermal light and Hong-Ou-Mandel dip of entangled photon pairs is the same, which can be interpreted by constructive and destructive two-photon interference, respectively. Quantum optical coherence theory based on Feynman's path integral is helpful to understand the coherence properties of light, which may eventually lead us to the answer of the question: what is a photon?

Abstract:Accurately controlling the quantum coherence of photons is pivotal for their applications in quantum sensing and quantum imaging. Here, we propose the utilization of quantum entanglement and local phase manipulation techniques to control the higher-order quantum coherence of photons. By engineering the spatially varying phases in the transverse plane, we can precisely manipulate the spatial structure of the second-order coherence function of entangled photon pairs without changing the photon intensity distribution of each photon. Our approach can readily be extended to higher-order quantum coherence control. Abstract:Abstract To examine the second-order coherence of light propagation of quantum states in arbitrary directions through dispersive non-Hermitian optical media, we considered two sets of non-Hermitian periodic structures that consist of gain/loss unit cells. We show that each batch can satisfy the parity-time symmetry conditions at a distinct frequency. We then varied the gain/loss strength in the stable electromagnetic regime to evaluate the transmittance of N-photon number states through each structure. The results show both sets preserve their antibunching characteristics under specific incident light conditions. Furthermore, s(p)-polarized light exhibits higher (lower) second-order coherence at larger incident angles. In addition, the antibunching features of the transmitted states degrade with an increase in the number of unit cells in multilayered structures for both polarizations.

Observation of the First-Order Interference Fringes Beyond Coherence Length Employing Commercial Continuous-wave Multi-mode Laser Diode: A Sight of Two-photon Interference

Abstract:We report an experiment of observation of classical double-slit interference fringes of two-photon interference. In the experiment, a commercial continuous-wave multi-mode F-P laser diode without either mode-locked or frequency-locked is used as the light source, the density of photons is far more than the single-photon level, and the path difference of the long and short paths is far more than the longitudinal coherence length of the laser diode. The temporal stable and clearly visible spatial-distributed pattern, i.e. first-order interference fringes, was observed .Contradict to the prediction of single-photon interference mechanism, the interference happened far beyond the coherence length, the occurrence possibility and time duration of the interference fringes decrease with the reduction of mode number of the LD, and the time difference between the fringes disappearance and the light vanish is equal to the time difference of the two paths. After discussion, we came to the conclusion that the observed phenomena can be understood in time-resolved two-photon interference mechanism. We reveal a new method to perform two-photon first-order interference, and this help to understand the nature of two-photon interference and also can be useful for quantum information science.

Abstract:In this work, the optical properties and dynamical behaviors of the optical parametric oscillation under the anti Parity-Time (anti-PT) symmetry are studied. The non-Hermitian optical system is composed of two whispering-gallery mode micorcavities with one cavity supports the χ2 nonliearity. Compared with the previous non-Hermitian system that relies on optical gain and loss, the proposed system could achieve the ultra-fast control of anti-PT symmetry by adjusting the parameter gain and coupling strength. Moreover, by focusing on the anti-PT symmetrical system and asymmetrical gain under linear pumping conditions, we find that the system provides the asymmetric transmission under the anti-PT symmetry, meanwhile the nonreciprocal transmission would be achieved by breaking the antiPT symmetry. We believe these results may be further applied to optical diodes, optical switches and other optical devices which may pave the way of nanophotonics and quantum information science.

Abstract:Quantum entanglement generation is generally known to be impossible by any classical means. According to Poisson statistics, coherent photons are not considered quantum particles due to the bunching phenomenon. Recently, a coherence approach has been applied to interpret quantum features such as the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) effect, Franson-type nonlocal correlation, and delayed-choice quantum eraser, where the quantum feature is due to basis-product superposition at the cost of 50 % photon loss. For this, it has been understood that a fixed sum-phase relation between paired photons is the bedrock of quantum entanglement. Here, coherently driven quantum features of the HOM effects are presented using linear optics-based polarization-basis control. Like quantum operator-based destructive interference in the HOM theory, a perfectly coherent analysis shows the same photon bunching of the paired coherent photons on a beam splitter, whereas individual output intensities are uniform.
