Abstract:The heavy metal inventory and the ecological risk of the tidal flat sediments in Haizhou Bay were investigated. Results show that the average concentrations of heavy metals in the surface sediments exceeded the environment background values of Jiangsu Province coastal soil, suggesting that the surface sediments were mainly polluted by heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn). In addition, the profiles of heavy metals fluxes can reflect the socio-economic development of Lianyungang City, and heavy metals inputs were attributed to anthropogenic activities. Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn were mainly present in the non-bioavailable residual form in surface sediments, whereas Cd and Mn were predominantly in the highly mobile acid soluble and reducible fractions. The ecological risk of the polluted sediments stemmed mainly from Cd and Pb. According to the Sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), however, the adverse biological effects caused by the heavy metals occasionally occurred in tidal flat.

Abstract:This work is the first systematic quantitative analysis of the heavy metal situation along the Zhejiang coastal region focusing on the integrative assessment of the concentrations of seven heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Hg, Zn, Pb, Cr, and As) in surface sediments during the 2012-2015 period. Different heavy metal contamination indices were used for surface sediment quality assessment purposes. The numerical results revealed a noticeable spatial fluctuation of the degree of contamination throughout the region during the four years considered. Higher contamination levels and ecological risks were detected in the southern part of the Zhejiang coastal region. It was found that the Cu, Cd and Hg were the predominant contaminants along the Zhejiang coast with mean regional concentrations varying between 29.1 and 34.2, 0.12-017, and 0.044-0.052 mg/kg, respectively. The Cr and Pb exhibited lower contamination levels than the other metals during each one of the years 2012-2015. Stochastic site indicators of heavy metal contamination were used to assess regional uncertainties and obtain useful physical interpretations of the state of contamination of the Zhejiang coast. These indicators can be expressed explicitly in terms of probabilities of heavy metal contamination (either at a global scale or spatially distributed over the coastal region), and therefore they can be considered as risk indicators. It was found that the fraction of the coastal region where excess contamination occurred could never exceed the ratio of the mean heavy metal contamination over the selected threshold. In half of the coast study region, the degree of heavy metal contamination was higher than the median spatial contamination values during the month of August of the years 2012-2015. The spatial means of excess contamination and excess differential contamination increased as the relative area of over-contamination increased. Within the substantially contaminated sub-region of the Zhejiang coast, stronger contamination correlations were observed between locations separated by shorter distances. These correlations were higher when smaller thresholds were considered. As regards the spatial connectivity of the corresponding contamination risks, it was found that 44%, 31%, 39% and 63% of the location pairs in the Zhejiang coast simultaneously experienced moderate risks during the years 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, respectively. The ratio of the probability of excess contamination at both locations separated by distances < 20 km over the probability of excess contamination at either one of these two locations was high even for large thresholds, indicating that locations with high contamination are concentrated rather than being dispersed along the Zhejiang coast. Lastly, another interesting finding is that the characterization of the Zhejiang coastal region as over-contaminated is very sensitive to the DC threshold considered, that is, a small increase in the threshold selected can reduce significantly the probability that region is characterized as over-contaminated.
Application of Multivariate Statistical Approach to Identify Heavy Metal Sources in Sediment and Waters: a Case Study in Yangzhong, China

Abstract:Multivariate statistical approach is used to identify the sources of heavy metals (Bi, Cd, Co, Cr, Mn, Pb, U, V, and Zn) in surface water and freshly deposited riverine sediment samples in Yangzhong city, China. The metal concentration data for the water and sediment samples are reported in terms of basic statistical parameters and metal-to-metal correlations. In both surface water and sediment samples, significant correlations are observed between some metals. Principal component analysis and cluster analysis distinguishes factors of lithogenic and anthropogenic origin. Bismuth, Cd, Co, and Pb (Co only for water samples) contents are controlled by the regional lithogenic high background factor; Co, Mn, U, and V (Co only for sediment samples) are interpreted to be mainly inherited from soil parent materials, while Cr, Zn, and Mn in the two kinds of samples are recognized as the tracer of industrial pollution. Obvious similarity between factor loadings of the two kinds of samples is observed, evidencing that metal variability in the two kinds of samples is controlled by the same sources. Statistical analysis agrees with discussion based on background value and field survey of point-source pollutant affected sediment, making this statistical discussion more convincing.

Abstract:Hong Kong is an urbanized coastal city which experiences substantially different metal loads from anthropogenic activities. This study was aimed at analyzing the spatial distribution and pollution evaluation of ten selected heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Hg, Ni, Zn, Fe, V) in the coastal sediments of Hong Kong. The distribution of heavy metal pollution in sediments has been analyzed using the geographic information system (GIS) technique, and their pollution degrees, corresponding potential ecological risks and source identifications, have been studied by applying the enrichment factor (EF) analysis, contamination factor (CF) analysis, potential ecological risk index (PEI), and integrated multivariate statistical methods, respectively. Firstly, the GIS technique was used to access the spatial distribution of the heavy metals; the result revealed that pollution trend of these metals was decreased from the inner to the outer coast sites of the studied area. Secondly, combining the EF analysis and CF analysis, we found that the pollution degree of heavy metals followed the order of Cu > Cr > Cd > Zn > Pb > Hg > Ni > Fe > As > V. Thirdly, the PERI calculations showed that Cd, Hg, and Cu were the most potential ecological risk factors compared to other metals. Finally, cluster analysis combined with principal component analysis showed that Cr, Cu, Hg, and Ni might originate from the industrial discharges and shipping activities. V, As, and Fe were mainly derived from the natural origin, whereas Cd, Pb, and Zn were identified from the municipal discharges and industrial wastewater. In conclusion, this work should be helpful in the establishment of strategies for contamination control and optimization of industrial structures in Hong Kong.

Abstract:Surface sediments collected from the largest port in Hainan Island, the Yangpu Port and its surrounding coastal area, were detected by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and atomic fluorescence spectrometry for Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, and Hg, respectively. The present work attempts to determine the status of five heavy metals distribution in sediments, and their ecological risks' assessment in the studied area. Sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) and Hakanson's method were used to determine potential risk of heavy metal contamination. The results indicated that the mean contents of selected metals were never exceeded TEL, which would likely not cause occasionally effects in the studied areas. The calculated mean potential ecological risk degrees were in the descending order of Pb, Hg, Cd, Cu and Zn. Besides, multivariate statistical analyses revealed that Zn, Pb and Cu mainly originated from industrial waste water and sewage which were probably in the close relationship with characteristics about the Coastal industrial; Cd and Hg mainly derived from agricultural wastewater and oil leak. This research provides managers with information needed to better regulate the environment of the Yangpu Port.
Coastal sediment heavy metal(loid) pollution under multifaceted anthropogenic stress: Insights based on geochemical baselines and source-related risks

Abstract:Contamination and risk assessments generally ignore the potential bias in results caused by the variation of background values at different spatial scales due to the spatial heterogeneity of sediments. This study aims to perform quantitative source-ecological risk assessment via establishing geochemical baselines values (GBVs) of heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) in Daya Bay, China. Cumulative frequency distribution (CFD) curves determined the GBVs of 12.44 (Cu), 30.88 (Pb), 69.89 (Zn), 0.06 (Cd), 47.85 (Cr), 6.80 (As), and 0.056 mg kg-1 (Hg), which were comparable to the background values of Guangdong Province surface soils, and implied a potential terrestrial origin of the coastal sediments. Principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) identified three sources (F1: natural processes; F2: anthropogenic impacts; F3: specific sources) with contributions of 51.7%, 29.2%, and 19.1%, respectively. The source-specific risk assessment revealed an ecological risk contribution potential of 73.8% for the mixed anthropogenic sources (F2 + F3) and only 26.2% for natural processes. Cd and Hg were the priority management of metallic elements, occupying 63.5% and 72.5% of the contribution weights of F2 and F3, respectively, which showed multi-level pollution potentials and ecological risk levels. The spatial distribution patterns demonstrated the hotspot features of HM pollution, and priority concerns should be given to the management of marine traffic and industrial point source pollution in Daya Bay. The results of the study provide a scientific approach and perspective for pollution treatment and risk management in the coastal environment.
Spatial distribution of heavy metals in Hong Kong's marine sediments and their human impacts: a GIS-based chemometric approach

Abstract:A geographic information system (GIS)-based chemometric approach was applied to investigate the spatial distribution patterns of heavy metals in marine sediments and to identify spatial human impacts on global and local scales. Twelve metals (Zn, V, Ni, Mn, Pb, Cu, Cd, Ba, Hg, Fe, Cr and Al) were surveyed twice annually at 59 sites in Hong Kong from 1998 to 2004. Cluster analysis classified the entire coastal area into three areas on a global scale, representing different pollution levels. Backward discriminant analysis, with 84.5% correct assignments, identified Zn, Pb, Cu, Cd, V, and Fe as significant variables affecting spatial variation on a local scale. Enrichment factors indicated that Cu, Cr, and Zn were derived from human impacts while Al, Ba, Mn, V and Fe originated from rock weathering. Principal component analysis further subdivided human impacts and their affected areas in each area, explaining 87%, 84% and 87% of the total variances, respectively. The primary anthropogenic sources in the three areas were (i) anti-fouling paint and domestic sewage; (ii) surface runoff, wastewater, vehicle emissions and marine transportation; and (iii) ship repainting, dental clinics, electronic/chemical industries and leaded fuel, respectively. Moreover, GIS-based spatial analysis facilitated chemometric methods.
Potentially hazardous metals in the sediment of a subtropical bay in South China: Spatial variability, contamination assessment and source apportionment

Abstract:Potentially hazardous metals (PHMs) in the coastal environment have become a great concern due to their easy bioaccumulation, poor biodegradability and high toxicity. Surface sediment samples were collected in a subtropical bay in South China to analyse the spatial variations, contamination level and potential sources of PHMs. The results indicated that the order of average contents of PHMs in Qinzhou Bay sediment was Zn > Pb > Cr > Cu > As > Hg > Cd. The most important potential ecological risk factor was Hg pollution in the Qinzhou Bay sediments. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) model results indicated that Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd and Cr mainly originated from natural sources while Hg and As were related to coal fired industrial inputs and petroleum production activities. The results could provide a basis for marine management to formulate relevant pollution prevention and control measures.
Quantitative identification and source apportionment of anthropogenic heavy metals in marine sediment of Hong Kong

Abstract:Based on ten heavy metals collected twice annually at 59 sites from 1998 to 2004, enrichment factors (EFs), principal component analysis (PCA) and multivariate linear regression of absolute principal component scores (MLR-APCS) were used in identification and source apportionment of the anthropogenic heavy metals in marine sediment. EFs with Fe as a normalizer and local background as reference values was properly tested and suitable in Hong Kong, and Zn, Ni, Pb, Cu, Cd, Hg and Cr mainly originated from anthropogenic sources, while Al, Mn and Fe were derived from rocks weathering. Rotated PCA and GIS mapping further identified two types of anthropogenic sources and their impacted regions: (1) electronic industrial pollution, riparian runoff and vehicle exhaust impacted the entire Victoria Harbour, inner Tolo Harbour, Eastern Buffer, inner Deep Bay and Cheung Chau; and (2) discharges from textile factories and paint, influenced Tsuen Wan Bay and Kwun Tong typhoon shelter and Rambler Channel. In addition, MLR-APCS was successfully introduced to quantitatively determine the source contributions with uncertainties almost less than 8%: the first anthropogenic sources were responsible for 50.0, 45.1, 86.6, 78.9 and 87.5% of the Zn, Pb, Cu, Cd and Hg, respectively, whereas 49.9% of the Ni and 58.4% of the Cr came from the second anthropogenic sources.
Distribution of heavy metals in coastal sediments under the influence of multiple factors: A case study from the south coast of an industrialized harbor city (Tangshan, China)

Abstract:This research investigated the spatial distribution of heavy metals, including mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), and zinc (Zn), in surface sediments from a coastal area near to an industrial harbor (Tangshan Harbor, China) using 161 sediment samples. According to the geo-accumulation index (Igeo), 11 samples were classified as unpolluted (Igeo≤0). Notably, 41.0 % of the research samples were moderately or strongly polluted (2 < Igeo≤3) with Hg and 60.2 % of the samples were moderately polluted (1 < Igeo≤2) in Cd. The ecological effect evaluation showed that the metals Zn, Cd, and Pb were at the effect range low level, and 51.6 % of the samples for Cu, 60.9 % for Cr, 90.7 % for As, 41.0 % for Hg, and 64.0 % for Ni fell in the range between the effect range-low and the effect range-mean levels, respectively. The correlation analysis showed that the distribution patterns of Cr, Cu, Zn, Ni, and Pb were similar to each other, high in the northwest, southeast, and southwest regions of the study area and low in the northeast region, which corresponded well with sediment size components. Based on principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF), four distinct sources of pollution were quantitatively attributed, including agricultural activities (22.08 %), fossil fuel consumption (24.14 %), steel production (29.78 %), and natural sources (24.00 %). Hg (80.29 %), Cd (82.31 %) and As (65.33 %) in the region's coastal sediments were predominantly contributed by fossil fuel, steel production and agricultural sources, respectively. Cr (40.00 %), Cu (43.63 %), Ni (47.54 %), and Zn (38.98 %) were primarily of natural lithogenic origin, while Pb mainly came from the mixed sources of agricultural activities (36.63 %), fossil fuel (36.86 %), and steel production (34.35 %). Multiple factors played important roles in the selective transportation of sedimentary heavy metals, particularly sediment properties, and hydrodynamic sorting processes in the study area.

Abstract:The concentrations of heavy metals (Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) in 16 samples collected from the lower reach (Changsha–Xiangtan–Zhuzhou section) of the Xiangjiang River in southern China were determined by high-resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (HR-ICPMS). Multivariate analysis, such as principal component analysis and cluster analysis, coupled with correlation coefficient analysis, was used to analyze the analytical data and to identify possible pollution sources of heavy metals. The results showed that the eight studied heavy metals accumulated in the sediments from the lower Xiangjiang River, especially Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd, which were 2.0–2.6, 1.7–2.6, 3.5–3.8, 3.2–3.6 and 189.5–152.8 times the soil trace element background for Hunan Province and UCC background values, respectively. Principal component analysis and cluster analysis, coupled with correlation coefficient analysis, revealed that the sediments from lower Xiangjiang River were mainly influenced by two sources: Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb mainly originated from industrial sources, whereas Mn was derived from both industrial and natural sources, but mainly from natural sources due to weathering and erosion.

Abstract:Concentrations of heavy metals in coastal soils, stream sediments and intertidal sediments of Yueqing Bay basin were analyzed to study their distribution and trace the possible sources. According to various single- and multi-index methods, heavy metal enrichment, especially for Cu, Zn, Cr and Ni in stream sediments, should draw environmental concern. Controlling factors such as inorganic scavengers, organic matter, sample grain size and hydrodynamic conditions were identified to influence the transportation and distribution of metals within coastal soils and sediments. Principal component analysis indicated that most metals in soils and stream sediments originate primarily from natural and anthropogenic sources, respectively. Most metals in intertidal sediments, originating both from natural processes and human activities, tend to be concentrated in fine particles. The exchange of water and sediment between the bay and open waters is strong enough to keep the metals in the tidal flats from rising to very high levels.

Abstract:Daya Bay, especially in the northwestern region, which is a nature reserve with larval economic fish and shrimp populations, is no longer an unpolluted marine environment due to the recent increases in anthropogenic activities. This study collected seasonal surface sediment samples from 20 sites in northwestern Daya Bay to evaluate pollution and ecological risks and to identify possible sources and transport pathways of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn, Hg, As). The results showed that all the heavy metal concentrations were below the established primary standard criteria, except for concentrations of Cr in spring, as well as Cu and Zn in autumn at several sampling stations, which had excess rates of 35, 4.76, and 4.76%, respectively. The geoaccumulation index (Igeo) values of heavy metals indicated that all sites had unpolluted to moderate pollution levels. In comparison to the samples collected in autumn, those in spring experienced a higher degree of pollution, particularly Cr and As. The ecological risk indices of heavy metals in sediments ranged from 225.86 to 734.20 in spring and from 196.69 to 567.52 in autumn, suggesting that most sites had a moderate ecological risk or a considerable ecological risk, and very few a had high ecological risk. Moreover, ArcGIS10.2 software was used to visualize their spatial distribution, and the results were similar in both spring and autumn. The results of the Pearson correlation analysis and principal component analysis showed that Cu, Hg, and Pb might be affected by anthropogenic activities, and As might be derived from natural sources such as atmospheric inputs. A cluster analysis showed that heavy metals were mainly affected by the negative impacts of human beings on the environment.

Abstract:The sediment samples were collected from eight sites located in the Pearl River Estuary and the Shenzhen Bay of the west coast of Shenzhen. The distributions of the seven elements Zn, Cr, Hg, Cu, Cd, Pb and As have been analyzed, and their pollution degrees, corresponding potential ecological risks and source identifications have been studied using geo-accumulation index, potential ecological risk index and integrated multivariate statistical methods, respectively. Based on the calculated geo-accumulation indices, the contamination levels of all elements in the Pearl River Estuary are similar to those in the Shenzhen Bay, reflecting that these elements in the study areas have similar sources because of the adequate seawater exchange. The calculated potential ecological risk indices suggest that Cd and Hg are at considerable and moderate risk, respectively. Multivariate statistical analyses further reveal that Zn, Hg, Cd and Pb originated from industrial wastewater, while Cr and Cu are mainly from both industrial wastewater and agricultural sources, and As is mainly from natural source. These research results provide baseline information for both the coastal environment management and the worldwide heavy metal distribution and assessment.

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination is of great concern in rapidly urbanizing areas. A basin-basis study on the impacts of urbanization on the heavy metal contamination in surface sediments from the Qinhuai River, Eastern China, was conducted, focusing on the spatial variation and source appointments. All of the sampling sites can be divided into three groups based on the hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) results, which correspond well to the pollution levels of the studied heavy metals in the sediments of the rural, suburban, and urban sections of the Qinhuai River. The relationship between the heavy metal and the Al/Si ratio of sediments varied distinctly with the metal species and urbanization degree of the river sections. Correlation analysis and HCA highlighted that zinc appeared to be a fairly efficient geochemical signature of urban-related heavy metal contamination. The contributions derived from urban activities ranged from 35.9% for Ni to 96.1% for Cu, as estimated by a multilinear regression of the absolute principal component score method (MLR-ACPS). Agricultural activities had a clear impact on As, Pb, and Cu contamination of the sediment. Lithologic sources contributed a significant portion of Ni, Cr, and As to the sediment.
Identifying Sources and Hazardous Risks of Heavy Metals in Topsoils of Rapidly Urbanizing East China

Abstract:With rapid economic and social development, soil contamination arising from heavy metals has become a serious problem in many parts of China. We collected a total of 445 samples (0–20 cm) at the nodes of a 2 km×2 km grid in surface soils of Rizhao city, and analyzed sources and risk pattern of 10 heavy metals (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn). The combination of Multivariate statistics analysis and Geostatistical methods was applied to identify the sources and hazardous risk of heavy metals in soils. The result indicated that Cr, Ni, Co, Mn, Cu, and As were mainly controlled by parent materials and came from natural sources. Cd and Hg originated from anthropogenic sources. Pb and Zn, belonging to different groups in multivariate analysis, were associated with joint effect of parent materials and human inputs. Ordinary Kriging and Indicator Kriging suggested that single element and elements association from the same principal components had similar spatial distribution. Through comprehensive assessment on all elements, we also found the high risk areas were located in the populated urban areas and western study area, which could be attributed to the higher geological background in the western part and strong human interference in the eastern part.
Spatial Interrelations and Multi-Scale Sources of Soil Heavy Metal Variability in a Typical Urban–rural Transition Area in Yangtze River Delta Region of China

Abstract:Information and knowledge about the spatial variability and multi-scale sources of soil heavy metal variability are important for risk assessment, soil remediation, as well as effective management recommendations. Topsoil samples (0–20cm) (n=330) were collected from Luhe County, China. Geostatistical multivariate factorial kriging with robust estimates of variograms, spatial overly analysis and indicator kriging were applied to explore the correlations among soil heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, Ni, Cd, and Hg) across different spatial scales, identify the sources of spatial variability, and evaluate the potential risk of soil contamination. High variability of soil heavy metals was observed and the correlations among the selected soil heavy metals in the study area depend on spatial scale. Copper, Zn, Cr, and Ni at short-range scale (2km) are mainly controlled by geology (bed rock), while land use greatly affected the long-range variations of Cd and Hg. The strong correlations between Cr and Ni at short- and long-range (11km) scale indicate that the sources of Cr and Ni are predominately geochemical. However, anthropogenic activities had profound impacts on the concentrations of Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, and Hg. The potential contamination risk, defined here as measured soil heavy metal concentrations which exceeded the background values of Chinese Environmental Quality Standard for Soils, was observed in Cu, Zn and Pb, and the areas covered 3%, 3.4%, and 1.4%, respectively. The possible sources of Cu and Zn contamination can be considered as the current and historic industrial emissions from Dachang industrial zone, and the potential areas of Pb contamination could be attributed to the industrial emissions from Dachang industrial zone, small factories and heavy traffic flows in/nearby downtown area of the county. While the Hg contamination risk was closely related to the widely use of Hg-related pesticide during 1940–1970s.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the distribution, pollution, risk and sources of trace metals in sediments along China Sea. Clear spatial variations were found for Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Se, Mo, Ag, Cd, and Pb, whereas As did not show spatial variation. East China Sea (ECS) contained the highest concentrations of Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, South China Sea (SCS) shallow sea contained the highest concentrations of Zn, Se, Mo, Ag, Cd, and Pb, whereas coral reefs contained the lowest concentrations of trace metals. Spatial variations could be explained by economic development characteristics along China Sea. As, Se and Cd exhibited low to moderate pollution in China Sea sediment, yet pollution for Cu, Zn, Ni, and Ag appeared in some regions. Sediment in ECS had moderate ecological risks and other regions at low ecological risks. The absolute principle component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) and Pb stable isotope indicated that 43–74% of trace metals (Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Cd, and Pb) were derived from anthropogenic sources like traffic emission, agricultural activities, industrial source. No pollution and ecological risk were observed in coral reefs, yet 39–71% (Pb) was derived from anthropogenic activities such as motor vessels.

Abstract:Trace elements contamination in estuarine and bay ecosystems has become a serious problem, especially in bays with frequent aquaculture activities. To explore the pollution risk, sources and trends of pollution trace elements in Dongshan Bay, a typical aquaculture bay in China, the concentration and spatial distribution of seven trace elements in surface sediments were investigated. In this study, Zn was the element with the highest content in surface sediments, followed by Pb and Cr, while Cd was the lowest, but the average concentrations of Cd and Hg exceeded the regional background values. High levels of trace elements were distributed in estuaries and aquaculture areas, which were illustrated also by the SOM model. An evaluation of the pollution load index ( PLI ), geo-accumulation index ( I geo ) and potential ecological risk index ( PERI ) demonstrated that Cd and Hg were the principal pollution elements and ecological risk factors in the surface sediments of the Bay. A positive matrix factorization model (PMF) revealed that the main sources of trace elements were natural sources, petrochemical industry and fossil fuel combination emissions, use of agricultural fertilizer, and industrial and agricultural sewage discharge. Comparative analysis found that since 2008, the mean content of Cu, Pb, Zn, and As have decreased significantly, while the content of Cd, Hg, and Cr have increased significantly. This information will help marine management efforts in taking effective measures to prevent environmental risks caused by trace elements pollution, especially related to aquaculture.
