Abstract:Introduction: Managerial coaching is considered a powerful developmental intervention in the workplace that has gained tremendous popularity in recent years. A growing base of scholarship examining the efficacy of this form of coaching has identified numerous benefits, primarily for employees receiving this form of coaching, and some limited attention has focused on benefits for managers who coach. However, an important topic related to managerial coaching that has gone under-explored is the beliefs that managers have about coaching. Since beliefs often guide behaviors, obtaining a more robust understanding of the beliefs that guide managers who serve as coaches is warranted and several scholars have called for more research on this aspect of managerial coaching. Therefore, the study reported here presents a subset of findings that relate to the coaching behaviors that managers enact along with a comprehensive understanding of their guiding beliefs. Methods: These specific findings are drawn from a larger qualitative multi-case study employing an adaptation of the critical incident technique that was designed to examine the beliefs, behaviors, and learning and development outcomes for both managers who coach and their respective coachees. This larger study obtained perspectives about these aspects of managerial coaching from both the coaches and coachees which also reflects an approach seldom taken when researching managerial coaching. Results and Discussion: Four research questions are addressed here: 1) What are the behaviors enacted by managers who coach (facilitate the learning of) their employees from the perspective of managers; 2), what are the behaviors enacted by managers who coach (facilitate the learning of) their employees from the perspective of employees; 3) What are the beliefs held by managers who coach (facilitate the learning of) their employees from the perspective of managers; and, 4) What are the beliefs held by managers who coach (facilitate the learning of) their employees from the perspective of their employees (coachees)? In addition to thick rich descriptions that illustrate these findings, implications for theory, research, and practice are also discussed.

How coaching can play a key role in the development of nurse managers

Abstract:Aims and objectives: The aim of this study was to explore empirically the role that coaching plays in the development of nurse managers in order to inform further research and policy makers about the potential utility and value of this means of development. Background: There is evidence of the importance of the role of nurse managers who are first line managers of a team of nurses within any health sector. However, there appears to be little understanding of the United Kingdom wide scope of nurse manager development across the United Kingdom and the means to increase its effectiveness. At the same time, it appears that some nurse managers receive coaching to help in their development. Design: This is a mixed methods study, using a pragmatist paradigm. Methods: Data was gathered from a quantitative survey and qualitative interviews. This paper is reporting the results of the qualitative interviews only. Twenty-one qualitative interviews were undertaken with nurse managers, coaches and directors of nursing to draw out their own experiences of coaching for nurse managers. Thematic analysis framework was used for data interrogation, identifying new patterns and emerging themes. Results: Themes that emerged from interviews include how nurse managers were introduced to coaching, how they balanced transitions, the role of reflection, the value of relationships and overlaps between clinical supervision, mentoring and coaching. Conclusions: Findings show that following coaching, nurse managers gained increased resilience, confidence and better coping mechanisms. This resulted in perceived improved team management and cohesion and appeared to lead to better quality of care for patients. Relevance to clinical practice: This study suggests the importance of nurse managers accessing coaching, to enable transformational leadership of their teams of nurses. It suggests also the importance of organisations supporting a coaching culture, to ensure staff satisfaction, motivation and improved quality of patient care.
Impact of Managers' Coaching Conversations on Staff Knowledge Use and Performance in Long-Term Care Settings

Abstract:Background: Extended lifespans and complex resident care needs have amplified resource demands on nursing homes. Nurse managers play an important role in staff job satisfaction, research use, and resident outcomes. Coaching skills, developed through leadership skill-building, have been shown to be of value in nursing. Aims: To test a theoretical model of nursing home staff perceptions of their work context, their managers' use of coaching conversations, and their use of instrumental, conceptual and persuasive research. Methods: Using a two-group crossover design, 33 managers employed in seven Canadian nursing homes were invited to attend a 2-day coaching development workshop. Survey data were collected from managers and staff at three time points; we analyzed staff data (n = 333), collected after managers had completed the workshop. We used structural equation modeling to test our theoretical model of contextual characteristics as causal variables, managers' characteristics, and coaching behaviors as mediating variables and staff use of research, job satisfaction, and burnout as outcome variables. Results: The theoretical model fit the data well (χ2 = 58, df = 43, p = .06) indicating no significant differences between data and model-implied matrices. Resonant leadership (a relational approach to influencing change) had the strongest significant relationship with manager support, which in turn influenced frequency of coaching conversations. Coaching conversations had a positive, non-significant relationship with staff persuasive use of research, which in turn significantly increased instrumental research use. Importantly, coaching conversations were significantly, negatively related to job satisfaction. Linking evidence to action: Our findings add to growing research exploring the role of context and leadership in influencing job satisfaction and use of research by healthcare practitioners. One-on-one coaching conversations may be difficult for staff not used to participating in such conversations. Resonant leadership, as expected, has a significant impact on manager support and job satisfaction among nursing home staff.

Abstract:Despite increasingly common references to “coaching cultures,” little empirical research has been conducted to understand the nature of coaching cultures. Our study aims to address this gap with a study of Australian managers. In their responses to open-ended questions, managers gave us insight into their experiences of coaching cultures. The elements needed to create a coaching culture are consistent use of different types of coaching across the organization, a formalized process, provision of appropriate training and resources, the involvement of top management, transparency of benefits, and the alignment with organizational values such as ownership, empowerment, collaboration, and respect. Managers should take a proactive role in the creation of coaching cultures within their organizations, including acting as coaching role models, actively engaging in training themselves, and promoting the benefits of such a culture.

Abstract:Nurse leaders and managers are being encouraged to adopt developmental and transformational leadership styles, and coaching is one tool that they can use to that effect. Beyond formal coaching relationships, the principles of coaching can be relevant to a variety of conversations with staff, for example during appraisals, clinical supervision or training. Applying the principles of coaching as a nurse leader or nurse manager appears to have benefits for all involved. Coaching can help build trusting relationships and empower staff to set themselves meaningful and solution-focused goals and actions and therefore facilitate change. However, the practice of coaching is sometimes misunderstood, while coaching that is unplanned or implemented ineffectively may compromise relationships. • Coaching is not a directive approach, instead the coach needs to adopt a non-judgemental, supportive and collaborative stance. • Coaching requires both parties to enter a learning process aimed at bringing about change and should be built on a commitment to that learning process. • Asking 'curious' questions, encouraging critical reflection and using active listening form the basis of an effective coaching conversation. Abstract:Aim To report an analysis of the concept of authentic leadership. Design Concept analysis. Data Sources Data sources included core databases: CINAHL, PubMed, Embase, ProQuest, APA PsycINFO, ERIC, ABI/Inform and Tomlinson's Nursing Core Collection (2010). Methods Walker and Avant's method was used to identify descriptions, antecedents, consequences and empirical referents of the concept. Model, related and contrary cases were developed. Results Defining attributes were identified as self‐awareness, transparency, balanced processing, internalised moral perspective, caring, shared decision making and moral/ethical courage. Antecedents were authenticity, positive psychological capacities, life experiences, leadership development programme, supportive organisational climate and an ethical climate. Consequences are employee well‐being and satisfaction, positive work environment and enhanced performance and safety. Conclusion While authentic leadership is an emerging and popular leadership approach, there are gaps in relation to agreed definitions. Moreover, core textbooks within the subject area also fail to provide these definitions. This concept analysis represents the first comprehensive and robust analysis of the concept of authentic leadership that will serve to reliably inform research, education and practice. Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care This analysis reveals that authentic leadership can have a positive effect on staff well‐being and satisfaction, their work environment, performance and ultimately safety. This has potential for a positive impact on patient care and patient outcomes by fostering an ethical and supportive work environment. Abstract:Managerial coaching may be an effective strategy to reduce role ambiguity among nurses. Although the benefits of coaching relationships have been demonstrated outside of nursing, there is a lack of evidence about this career development relationship in nursing. A cross-sectional design was used to determine the relationship between managerial coaching and role ambiguity among military and civilian nurses who work in the Military Health System (MHS). Nurses who worked at a large academic medical center in San Antonio, Texas were asked to participate by completing a survey to examine the variables of interest. Among the 382 nurses that responded, perceived role ambiguity was low and managerial coaching was seldom perceived from first-line supervisors. However, there was a significant negative relationship between managerial coaching and role ambiguity. This study provides foundational knowledge about the relationship between managerial coaching and role ambiguity for nurses working in the MHS.

Abstract:Background: Research on improving academic leadership in nursing is paramount to increase new faculty support, improve retention, and ensure a high academic standard for the next generation of nurses. However, an operational definition of academic leadership in nursing is missing from the literature and a common language is needed to cohere research. Aim: This study aimed to analyze the concept of academic leadership in nursing to inform future research on the factors that affect nursing faculty career development, job satisfaction, and retention. Methods: A concept analysis using Walker and Avant's eight-step method. Data sources: Five databases were searched (CINAHL, PubMed, OVID Emcare, ERIC, and Google Scholar), with 16 articles identified for analysis. The term "academic leadership" was used in a title search with "nursing" as a keyword. Results: Three main attributes were found: administrator, mentor, and nurse. The consequences of academic leadership in nursing are improved work environments, increased job satisfaction, and decreased faculty turnover. Capabilities essential for academic leaders in nursing include vision, risk-taking, excellent communication, mentoring, succession planning, advocacy, and education. Conclusion: An academic leader in nursing is a transformational leader who encourages, empowers, and motivates team members to grow, develop and thrive.

In response to these challenges, the practice of coaching emerges as a transformative skill, recommended for individuals in high-stress environments. Coaching in health care focuses on developing nurses and building teams by fostering self-understanding, deploying strengths, improving relational strategies, and gaining moral clarity. It serves as a potent strategy for nurse leaders to navigate the complexities of their systems. This paper explores the practice of coaching as an important mindset and skill. A coaching mindset is characterized by trust, deep listening, curiosity, embracing both/and thinking, discernment over judgment, and fosters an environment where nurses can flourish. It promotes a shift from telling to asking, empowering individuals to contribute innovative ideas and solutions. Abstract:PurposeManagerial coaching has been popularized as a way of motivating, developing and retaining employees in organizations. Yet, there has been a lack of empirical studies to examine the linkage between managerial coaching and its potential impact on employees. This study aims to investigate the interrelationships among managerial coaching, employees’ personal learning and organizational commitment. This study also attempts to revise an existing instrument for measuring coaching skills in organizations created by McLean et al. (2005) to assess managers’ coaching skills.Design/methodology/approachData analyzes were based on 187 employees of a top global technology organization headquartered in the USA. The existing instrument for measuring coaching skills was revised and confirmed through a series of efforts including expert reviews, pilot tests and assessing its reliability and validity. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the relationships among managerial coaching skills and employees’ personal learning and organizational commitment.FindingsThis study identified five dimensions of managerial coaching skills and validated the revised instrument measuring coaching skills in organizations. It also demonstrated that managers’ utilization of managerial coaching skills had a direct effect on employees’ learning and organizational commitment and impacted employees’ organizational commitment through personal learning.Originality/valueThis study examined the interrelationships among managerial coaching and employees’ personal learning and organizational commitment in organizations. In doing so, this study unveiled the process of how managers’ coaching affects employees’ development and attitudes at work. This study also identified five coaching skills as a tool to assess the level of managerial coaching.
Examining the predictive validity of a managerial coaching scale: a longitudinal study

Abstract:Managerial coaching remains a widespread and popular organizational development intervention applied across numerous industries to enhance critical workplace outcomes and employee attitudes, yet no studies to date have evaluated the temporal precedence within these relationships. This study sought to assess the predictive validity of the widely used Employee Perceptions of Supervisor/Line Manager Coaching Behavior Measure managerial coaching scale (CBI), employing a longitudinal design and following the testing of the causal hypothesized relationship framework. Three hypotheses were evaluated using three commonly associated variables with managerial coaching (role clarity, job satisfaction, and organization commitment), using longitudinal data collected over two waves from full-time US employees (n = 313). The study followed a two-wave design, collecting data over two time points to test for longitudinal measurement invariance and three reciprocal cross-lagged models. Results detected statistically significant cross-lagged and reciprocal cross-lagged effects in the role clarity and organization commitment models, highlighting a reciprocal relationship between managerial coaching behaviors and the two variables. However, only the reciprocal cross-lagged effect was statistically significant in the job satisfaction model. Findings suggest the predictive validity of the CBI scale for role clarity and organization commitment. Moreover, results indicate employee attitudes influenced managerial coaching behaviors over time across all three models, emphasizing the potential impact of employee attitudes on leadership effectiveness. This study highlights the complex relationships between managerial coaching and workplace outcomes, offering nuanced insights for improved understanding.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide a summary of the latest developments in the field of corporate coaching and mentoring. Design/methodology/approach Provides a viewpoint on the coaching and mentoring field drawing on research from Europe and the US. Findings Structured or supported coaching and mentoring within organisations is evolving rapidly and research is at last beginning to provide valuable insights into effective practices. Some strongly‐held assumptions are being challenged along the way. Greater definitional clarity, within specific contexts, contributes to efficacy. Increasing professionalisation with the coaching and mentoring sector is being helped by dialogue between the various bodies representing coaches and mentors and by the spread of supervision. Originality/value The article provides a succinct overview of the current position of the corporate coaching and mentoring arena and offers insights into how the field will develop in the future.

Abstract:Attention to the effects of managerial coaching usually focuses on subordinates. However, knowledge of the impact of coaching on the coaches is limited. Drawing upon conservation of resources theory, this study examined the extent to which coaching has benefits and costs for managers who spend time and energy coaching their subordinates. Structural equation modeling results from a multisource, time‐lagged survey showed that managerial coaching rated by team members affected managers' self‐ratings of job attitudes through a dual‐path model. Managerial coaching was positively related to managers' personal accomplishment, which had a subsequent positive effect on their job satisfaction. However, coaching also heightened managers' role overload, thus resulting in their work fatigue. In addition, results showed that managers who reported lower (versus higher) perceived organizational support tended to experience lower (versus higher) personal accomplishment and higher (versus lower) role overload associated with coaching. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

Abstract:Orientation: Women leaders face significant challenges because of the multifaceted nature of their lives. They need support to maintain a healthy work-life balance.Research purpose: This study aimed to explore the role of leadership coaching to support women in leadership positions with work-life balance.Motivation for the study: Leadership coaching is an effective and powerful individual support and development intervention; however, the link between coaching and work-life balance for woman leaders has not been studied sufficiently.Research approach/design and method: Data were collected via in-depth interviews from (n = 10) women in leadership positions who experienced at least six leadership coaching sessions in the last 18 months. An interpretative phenomenological paradigm was utilised and thematic analysis was used to analyse collected data.Main findings: Coaching supported women leaders on four fronts: increased self-awareness, designing work-life balance strategies, coping with gender-specific challenges and highlights the importance of organisational commitment to the coaching and support processes.Practical/managerial implications: Coaches should ensure that coaching programmes integrate strategies and techniques to help women leaders manage emotional, labour and domestic responsibilities. Organisations should take steps to create an inclusive workplace that actively promotes the professional development and well-being of women leaders by recognising and addressing their challenges and providing support through coaching.Contribution/value-add: This study provides empirical evidence that leadership coaching is a viable strategy to support women leaders with work-life balance.

Understanding and Measuring Coach–Teacher Alliance: A Glimpse Inside the ‘Black Box’

Abstract:Coaching models are increasingly used in schools to enhance fidelity and effectiveness of evidence-based interventions; yet, little is known about the relationship between the coach and teacher (i.e., coach–teacher alliance), which may indirectly enhance teacher and student outcomes through improved implementation quality. There is also limited research on measures of coach–teacher alliance, further hindering the field from understanding the active components for successful coaching. The current study examined the factor structure and psychometric characteristics of a measure of coach–teacher alliance as reported by both teachers and coaches and explored the extent to which teachers and coaches reliably rate their alliance. Data come from a sample of 147 teachers who received implementation support from one of four coaches; both the teacher and the coach completed an alliance questionnaire. Separate confirmatory factor analyses for each informant revealed four factors (relationship, process, investment, and perceived benefits) as well as an additional coach-rated factor (perceived teacher barriers). A series of analyses, including cross-rater correlations, intraclass correlation coefficients, and Kuder-Richardson reliability estimates suggested that teachers and coaches provide reliable, though not redundant, information about the alliance. Implications for future research and the utilization of the parallel coach–teacher alliance measures to increase the effectiveness of coaching are discussed.

Positive Psychological Coaching Definitions and Models: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract:Despite the popularity of the term Positive Psychological Coaching within the literature, there is no consensus as to how it should be defined (framed) or what the components of a positive coaching "model" should include. The aim of this systematic review was to define positive psychological coaching and to construct a clear demarcated positive psychological coaching model based on the literature. A systematic literature review led to the extraction of 2,252 records. All records were screened using specific inclusion/exclusion criteria, which resulted in the exclusion of records based on duplicates (n = 1,232), titles (n = 895), abstracts (n = 78), and criteria violations (n = 23). Twenty-four academic, peer-reviewed publications on positive psychological coaching were included. Data relating to conceptual definitions and coaching models/phases/frameworks were extracted and processed through thematic content analysis. Our results indicate that positive psychological coaching can be defined as a short to medium term professional, collaborative relationship between a client and coach, aimed at the identification, utilization, optimization, and development of personal strengths and resources in order to enhance positive states, traits and behaviors. Utilizing Socratic goal setting and positive psychological evidence-based approaches to facilitate personal growth, optimal functioning, enhanced wellbeing, and the actualization of people's potential. Further, eight critical components of a positive psychological coaching model were identified and discussed. The definition and coaching process identified in this study will provide coaches with a fundamental positive psychological framework for optimizing people's potential.

Coaching behaviors and stakeholders’ views of coaches’ efficacy

Abstract:There appears to be a relationship between coaching efficacy and athlete satisfaction, confidence, and performance, as well as coach behavior. However, little research exists, specifically within a high school setting, examining the relationship between coaches’ perceptions of efficacy and those of stakeholders (parents and athletes). The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between coaches’ efficacy and stakeholders’ views of coach efficacy. A sample of 516 coaches, 115 athletes, and 103 parents were recruited. Coaches have significantly higher levels of coaching efficacy on all four efficacy domains than the ratings from athletes and parents, while no differences between athlete and parent scores exist. Although coaches reported relatively high levels of coaching efficacy, they reported the lowest efficacy for motivation. Athletes concurred, providing the lowest scores for coaches in motivation. Implications for coaching education are discussed, including a greater need for training on implementing athlete motivation techniques.

Abstract:Background: This study provides an analysis of the concept of nurse faculty job satisfaction. Method: Walker and Avant's ( 2019 ) eight-step method guided this analysis. Searches of the CINAHL, PubMed, Medline, and Cochrane databases were performed with the following terms: faculty , nursing , nurs* faculty , nurs* educator , job satisfaction , work satisfaction , and employee satisfaction . Thirty-seven articles published between 2010 and 2022 in the field of nursing were included. Results: Three defining attributes of nurse faculty job satisfaction were identified: psychological empowerment, self-efficacy, and motivational factors (achievement, recognition, responsibility, advancement, work, and growth). Antecedents included mentoring, effective leadership, structural support, and work culture and relationships. The consequences of nurse faculty job satisfaction were commitment (professional and organizational) and work efficiency, which included productivity, creativity, and innovation. Conclusion: This concept analysis showed the attributes of nurse faculty job satisfaction are intrinsic and the antecedents are extrinsic. Strategies for Maintaining the Coach–Analyst Relationship Within Professional Football Utilizing the COMPASS Model: The Performance Analyst’s Perspective

Abstract:There is a considerable body of research by that has investigated the coach–athlete relationship in sport. However, given the multi-disciplinary nature of modern elite coaching, there is a scarcity of research focusing on the relationship between coaches and other members of the coaching and support team. This study examined the perceptions of six elite professional football analyst's relationships with their respective coaches. Semi structured interviews utilizing the COMPASS Framework were conducted focusing on Conflict, Openness, Motivation, Preventative Strategies, Assurance, Support, and Social Networks. The results verified that the COMPASS Model of relationship maintenance was applicable to this dyad. Content analysis indicated that there was 215 raw data units comprising of 16 higher order themes across the model which was further broken down into 29 lower order themes. All aspects of the model were found to contribute toward a positively maintained relationship. Having an open relationship underpinned by honesty and being able to provide an opinion was seen as the highest rated attribute that was closely followed by supporting the coach by understanding their requirements for successful coaching practice. Not meeting the coach's expectations was found to cause conflict and was further highlighted by an inductive analysis that revealed the existence of a relationship that is fundamentally dictated by the coach. Implications of this investigation are that professionals which support elite performers need to set out clear expectations of working practice and hierarchies in order to minimize the chance of internal conflict that can impact on the service levels received by the performer.

Abstract:Our article depicts and interrogates the claims for seeing coaching and mentoring as being distinct from each other, and rather suggests that context is agentic in determining which aspects of these two helping orientations are likely to be used by practitioners. To start with, our article traces the development of coaching and mentoring as two separate discourses. Traditionally, coaching has been associated with a shorter term performance focus, with the coach portrayed as a process‐ rather than a content knowledge−based expert. By contrast, mentoring has a longer‐term holistic focus, where the mentor has direct experience and knowledge in the setting that the mentee is operating in. Then, we discuss some limitations of seeking conceptual distinctiveness in purely theoretical terms, including accentuating differences of practices that cannot easily be disentangled from each other in practice. Therefore, on the basis of a case study, where coaching and mentoring behaviors are used by leaders and managers, we argue that context plays an agentic role and influences which of the helping orientations is used by practitioners. We conclude that, context being multifaceted, it leads to a kaleidoscope of coaching/mentoring behaviors, which supports a practice‐based approach to the debate.
