Abstract:A novel series of fluorine-containing thermo-sensitive core/shell microgel particels, poly[N-isopropylacrylamide-co-2,2,3,4,4,4-Hexafluorobutyl methacrylate-co-Poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate] [P(NIPAAm-co-HFMA-co-MPEGMA)], were prepared via surfactant free emulsion polymerization. The composition of the copolymer microgels was characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, and 19F NMR. Subsequently, the thermo-responsive behavior of the microgels was studied by UV–vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. The copolymer microgels exhibited a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) above the normal human physiological temperature. When the temperature was above the LCST, the hydrophobicity of the microgels increased significantly, and the average hydrodynamic diameter decreased greatly. TEM results showed that the copolymer microgels formed loose core–shell spherical particles below the LCST, but above the LCST, the particles became compact and the core–shell structure was not obvious. The drug loading and in vitro release were studied with 5-fluorouracil as a model drug. The result showed that the rate and amount of the drug release became much higher above the LCST. In a word, the study indicated that the fluorine-containing thermo-sensitive copolymer microgels had promising potential applications as a “smart” drug carrier in biomedical field.

Abstract:A type of thermosensitive ionic microgel was successfully prepared via the simultaneous quaternized cross-linking reaction during the surfactant-free emulsion copolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) as the main monomer and 1-vinylimidazole or 4-vinylpyridine as the comonomer. 1,4-Dibromobutane and 1,6-dibromohexane were used as the halogenated compounds to quaternize the tertiary amine in the comonomer, leading to the formation of a cross-linking network and thermosensitive ionic microgels. The sizes, morphologies, and properties of the obtained ionic microgels were systematically investigated by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic and static light scattering (DLS and SLS), electrophoretic light scattering (ELS), thermogravimetric analyses (TGA), and UV-visible spectroscopy. The obtained ionic microgels were spherical in shape with narrow size distribution. These ionic microgels exhibited thermosensitive behavior and a unique feature of poly(ionic liquid) in aqueous solutions, of which the counteranions of the microgels could be changed by anion exchange reaction with BF4K or lithium trifluoromethyl sulfonate (PFM-Li). After the anion exchange reaction, the ionic microgels were stable in aqueous solution and could be well dispersed in the solvents with different polarities, depending on the type of counteranion. The sizes and thermosensitive behavior of the ionic microgels could be well tuned by controlling the quaternization extent, the type of comonomer, halogenated compounds, and counteranions. The ionic microgels showed superior swelling properties in aqueous solution. Furthermore, these ionic microgels also showed capabilities to encapsulate and release the anionic dyes, like methyl orange, in aqueous solutions.
Thermo-sensitive ionic microgels via post quaternization cross-linking: fabrication, property, and potential application

Abstract:A post quaternized cross-linking strategy was reported to fabricate thermo-sensitive ionic microgels from thermo-sensitive linear copolymer poly( N -isopropylacrylamide- co -1-vinylimidazole) [P(NIPAm- co -VIM)] or poly( N -isopropylacrylamide- co -4-vinylpyridine) [P(NIPAm- co -4VP)] in aqueous solution at elevated temperature above its critical transition temperature ( T c ). 1,4-dibromobutane, 1,5-dibromopentane, or 1,6-dibromohexane were chosen as the quaternization cross-linker to quaternize the imidazole or pyridine moieties, leading to the formation of cross-linking and ionic network. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic and static light scattering (DLS & SLS), electrophoretic light scattering (ELS), and UV-visible spectroscopy were used to systematically investigate the sizes, morphologies, and properties of the obtained microgels. The sizes, swelling properties, and uniformity of microgels could be tuned by selecting proper quaternization cross-linking reaction temperature and cross-linkers. The obtained ionic microgels showed capability to adsorb the heavy metal salts like K 2 Cr 2 O 7 in aqueous solution via the anion exchange reactions. It was also demonstrated that other functional groups could be introduced into the microgel networks if the unquaternized moieties were available.
Tetraphenylethene Cross-Linked Thermosensitive Microgels Via Acylhydrazone Bonds: Aggregation-Induced Emission in Nanoconfined Environments and the Cononsolvency Effect

Abstract:We studied the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon in a nanoconfined environment, where the AIE-active molecule, namely, 1,1,2,2-tetrakis(4-methanoylphenyl)ethane (TPE-4ALD), was held in space via four acylhydrazone bonds within the thermosensitive microgel networks. The thermosensitive microgels, namely N-AH-TPE, were synthesized via the copolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and 4-acylhydrazine-(2-hydroxy-3-(methacryloxypropyl)pyridine hydrochloride (AH monomer) with TPE-4ALD as cross-linker via surfactant free emulsion polymerization (SFEP) in aqueous solution at 70 degrees C. Acylhydrazone-bonded tetraphenylethene (TPE-4AH) moieties were thus constructed and worked as the fluorophore in N-AH-TPE microgels. The aqueous suspensions of N-AH-TPE microgels exhibit strongly bluish-green fluorescence under ultraviolet excitation because the four arms of TPE-4AH moieties were held and their intramolecular motions are strongly restricted. It is estimated that there is one TPE-4AH moiety per about 394 nm3 for the swollen N-AH-TPE microgels. The fluorescent properties of N-AH-TPE microgels can be modulated via the change of hydrophilic and hydrophobic environments of TPE-4AH moieties exerted by external stimuli, like addition of various good solvents for TPE-based structures, i.e., N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), methanol, ethanol, tetrahydrofuran (THF), and N,N-dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), varying the solution temperature as well as the counteranions of the microgels. An unusual enhancement in the fluorescent intensity is observed when specific amounts of organic solvent are added into the aqueous suspensions of N-AH-TPE microgels, which can be attributed to the cononsolvency of the polyNIPAM network chains. The shrinkage of N-AH-TPE microgels caused by the cononsolvency effect further strengthens the confinement of TPE-4AH moieties and hence enhances the fluorescent emission of the microgels even though the organic solvents added are good solvents for TPE-4AH. Increasing the solution temperature of N-AH-TPE microgels or introducing hydrophobic counteranions into the microgels also significantly enhances the fluorescent emission of the microgels.
Preparation and Characterization of Thermosensitive Organic–inorganic Hybrid Microgels with Functional Fe3O4 Nanoparticles As Crosslinker

Abstract:A methodology is described for the preparation of thermosensitive organic inorganic hybrid microgels with functional Fe3O4 nanoparticles as the crosslinker and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) as the monomer. Magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles were first prepared via a redox reaction in aqueous solution and then modified with 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propylmethacrylate (TMSPMA) via the silanization. The bonding of multiple TMSPMA monomers on the surface of Fe3O4 nanoparticles renders them as crosslinker. Surfactant-free emulsion polymerization (SFEP) of NIPAm was then carried out with the presence of TMSPMA-modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles at 70 degrees C in aqueous solution, leading to the formation of thermosensitive PNIPAm-Fe3O4 hybrid microgels crosslinked with Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and physical properties measurement system (PPMS) were then used to characterize the resultant hybrid microgels. The experimental results show that the PNIPAm-Fe3O4 hybrid microgels were spherical in shape with a large size distribution and the Fe3O4 nanoparticles were randomly distributed inside the microgels. The PNIPAm-Fe3O4 hybrid microgels were thermosensitive, exhibiting a reversible swelling and deswelling behavior as a function of temperature. Abstract:Microgels with internal nanophase-separated structures were fabricated by surfactant-free emulsion copolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) and ionic liquid comonomers, namely, 1-vinyl-3-alkylimidazolium bromide (VIM nBr) with various lengths n of long alkyl side chain, in an aqueous solution at 70 °C using N, N'-methylenebisacrylamide as the cross-linker. Combined techniques of transmission electron microscopy, dynamic and static light-scattering, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and polarized optical microscopy were employed to systematically investigate the sizes, morphologies, and properties of the obtained microgels as well as the microstructures and phase transition of nanophases inside the microgels. The obtained P(NIPAm/VIM nBr) microgels are spherical with narrow size distributions, and the nanophases have a radius of about 8-12 nm and are randomly distributed inside the microgels. The cooperative competition of the hydrophilic quaternary vinylimidazole moieties and hydrophobic long alkyl side chains determines the thermal sensitive behavior of the P(NIPAm/VIM nBr) microgels. DSC and WAXD results reveal that the nanophases consist of the ordered alkyl side chains with a layered crystalline structure at low temperature, which exhibit a low melting temperature and a broad melting transition. SAXS results further show that the nanophases form a layered liquid crystalline structure at high temperature for the microgel suspensions and freeze-dried microgels.

Abstract:Degradable and thermosensitive microgels were successfully prepared via simultaneous quaternization and siloxane condensation during surfactant-free emulsion polymerization, with N-vinylcaprolactam as the main monomer and 1-vinylimidazole (VIM) as the comonomer, in the presence of (3-bromopropyl)trimethoxysilane (BPTMOS). The formation mechanism of cross-linking network was attributed to the hydrolysis and condensation of the methoxysilyl groups of BPTMOS and the quaternization of imidazole moiety of VIM by the bromine group of BPTMOS, leading to the microgels. The microgels were spherical in shape with a narrow size distribution, stable in an acidic buffer solution, but degradable in neutral and alkaline solutions. The presence of quaternized imidazolium in the same chain segment of Si-O-Si cross-linking points promoted the decomposition of Si-O-Si bonds and hence the degradation of the microgels. The obtained microgels could load and release the model drug, doxorubicin. The size, thermosensitivity, stability, degradation rate, and drug release behavior of the resultant microgels could be tuned by controlling the cross-linking degree, chemical composition, and degradation medium.
Thermosensitive hydrogel based on poly(ether-ester anhydride) nanoparticle as drug delivery system: preparation, characterization and biocompatibility.

Abstract:A novel temperature-response hydrogel was developed for drug-delivery applications. The hydrogel matrix (PES) was synthesized by melt polycondensation of poly(ether–ester) diacid based on PEG with low molecular weight and sebacic acid. The sol–gel–sol phase transitions of PES nanoparticle (NP) hydrogel were investigated. In vitro erosion of hydrogel was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, environmental scanning electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. In vitro release behaviors of hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs and in vivo histopathological evaluation were studied in detail. The study results revealed that an aqueous dispersion of PES nanoparticle freeze-dried powder exhibited reversible sol–gel transition behavior with increasing temperature. The hydrogel could maintain steadily at least a month during in vitro erosion process. There were sustained release behaviors of hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs from PES NP hydrogel and histopathological studies confirmed that the PES NP hydrogel only provoked an acceptable modest inflammatory response. Thus, PES NP hydrogel is biodegradable, biocompatible and promising in controlling the incorporated drugs for sustained release.

Abstract:Degradable thermosensitive ionic microgels were synthesized via surfactant-free emulsion polymerization.(SEEP), N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) and 1-vinylimidazole :(VIM) at 70 degrees C with degradable 1,4-phenylene bis(4-bromobutanoate) or 1,6-hexanediol bis(2-bromopropionate) as quaternized cross-linkers. VIM could be,quaternized by 1,4-phenylene bis(4-bromobutanoate) or 1,6-hexanediol bis(2-bromopropionate), leading to the formation of degradable cross-linking network and ionic microgels. Combined techniques of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), electrophoretic light scattering (ELS), UV-vis spectroscopy, FT-IR spectra, and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) were employed to systematically investigate the sizes, morphologies, and properties of the obtained microgels before and after degradation as well as the degradation mechanism. The obtained microgels were spherical in shape with narrow size distribution and exhibited thermosensitive behavior and controllable degradation. The disintegration of the microgels was confirmed to be resulted from the hydrolysis of ester bonds of the cross-linkers. The degradation rate of the obtained microgels could be regulated by tuning the pH value of niicrogel suspensions. The PNI-Ph series of microgels fabricated with 1,4-phenylene bis(4-bromobutanoate) as the cross-linking agent could gradually degrade even in neutral solution with lifetime S' of 44-53 h, depending On the quaternizaiton ratio. The degradation of PNI-Ph series of microgels experienced two reaction processes, that is, the hydrolysis of ester bonds of the cross-linkers and the oxidation of generated hydroquinone to form benzoquinone. It was also demonstrated that different silica nanostructures could be fabricated by Using such degradable thermosensitive ionic microgels as the template at various temperatures.
Degradable and Thermosensitive Microgels with Tannic Acid As the Sole Cross-Linker

Abstract:Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)-tannic acid (TA) microgels were successfully prepared via surfactant-free emulsion polymerization (SFEP) at 70 °C in aqueous solution using N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) as the monomer and a natural polyphenol macromolecule, TA, as the sole cross-linker. The cross-linking network of the PNIPAM-TA microgels was confirmed to contain both physical cross-linking structures formed via hydrogen-bonding interactions between TA and PNIPAM chains and chemical cross-linking structures formed via capturing the radicals of propagating polymer chains by catechol and pyrogallol groups of TA. Furthermore, TA was applied to modify the surface of hydrophobic Fe3O4 nanoparticles, leading to hydrophilic Fe3O4@TA composite nanoparticles, which were successfully used as the cross-linker to fabricate PNIPAM-Fe3O4@TA organic-inorganic hybrid microgels. The obtained PNIPAM-TA and PNIPAM-Fe3O4@TA organic-inorganic hybrid microgels had a uniform spherical shape with a relatively narrow size distribution and exhibited thermosensitive behavior and pH-tunable degradation. The PNIPAM-TA microgels were stable in the pH range of 1.3-11.1 but underwent complete degradation with pH above 11.4. The PNIPAM-Fe3O4@TA hybrid microgels were partially degraded at pH values of 1.3 and 2.1, stable in the pH range of 3.1-11.1, and underwent complete degradation at pH above 11.4. The partial degradation of PNIPAM-Fe3O4@TA organic-inorganic hybrid microgels under strong acidic conditions was attributed to the disintegration of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The complete degradation of both microgels at pH above 11.4 was attributed to the hydrolysis of ester groups of TA under strong alkali conditions.
Thermo-responsive Gels Based on Supramolecular Assembly of an Amidoamine and Citric Acid.

Abstract:In this work, we report the formation of a novel, aqueous-based thermo-responsive, supramolecular gelling system prepared by a convenient and efficient self-assembly of a long-chain amino-amide and citric acid. To determine the viscosity behavior and to gain insights into the gelation mechanism, a complementary combination of techniques, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and sinusoidal oscillatory tests, were used. The supramolecular gelator exhibited remarkably reversible sol-gel transitions induced by temperature at 76 °C. At a concentration of 5 wt%, the zero-frequency viscosity of the supramolecular system increased by about four orders of magnitude (from 4.2 to 12 563 Pa s) by changing the temperature from 23 °C to 76 °C. The viscous nature of the supramolecular gel could be preserved up to 90 °C. The synergistic combination of the hydrogen bonding between amino and carboxylic acid groups and the electrostatic interactions arising from the protonation of the amino-group and the deprotonation of carboxylic acid groups enhanced at higher temperatures is presumably responsible for the thermo-responsive behavior. We anticipate that these supramolecular gelators can be beneficial in various applications such as hydrogel scaffolds for regenerative medicine, personal care products and cosmetics, and enhanced oil recovery as viscosity modifiers.
FAULT-TOLERANT RECONFIGURABLE CONTROL FOR MIMO SYSTEMS USING ONLINE FUZZY IDENTIFICATION

Abstract:In this paper, a novel fault-tolerant control scheme is proposed for a class of uncertain multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) nonlinear systems based on online fuzzy clustering and identification. The unknown nonlinear function of the system is identified online using an evolving Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model and the fault-tolerant control law is designed based on the identified fuzzy model. The proposed method has the following features: (i) both the structure and the parameters of the T-S fuzzy model can evolve online, which makes it capable of representing more parameter and structure uncertainties of the nonlinear system; (ii) an online fuzzy clustering algorithm is employed to determine the generation of a new cluster center (new rule), which also serves as a warning signal of detecting a fault; (iii) a self-structuring fault-tolerant controller is constructed based on the online identified fuzzy model, together with a compensation controller, to guarantee the closed-loop stability under parameter variations and faults. The proposed fault-tolerant control scheme does not rely on a specially designed fault diagnosis module. Simulation studies on an inverted pendulum example have verified the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme and demonstrated the proposed control scheme has the capability to achieve desired tracking performance when there exist parameter changes or faults and the generation of new rules can alert the occurrence of faults in the system.

Abstract:A kind of novel fluorine-containing pH-responsive core/shell microgels poly(DMAEMA- co -HFMA)- g -PEG were prepared via surfactant-free emulsion polymerization using water as the solvent. The well-defined chemical structure of the copolymers was characterized by FTIR, 1 H-NMR, 19 F-NMR, and elemental analysis. The microgel particles were studied by florescence probe technique, dynamic light scattering, and zeta potential measurement; the microgels displayed a significant pH-responsive behavior. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity assay indicated that the copolymer microgels had low toxicity, and 5-FU-loaded microgels offered a certain killing potency against cancer cells. In addition, the drug loading and in vitro drug release demonstrated that 5-FU was successfully incorporated into polymeric microgels, and the drug-loaded microgels showed a marked pH-dependent drug release behavior. This study suggests that the poly(DMAEMA- co -HFMA)- g -PEG microgels play an important role in the release mechanism stimulated by the change in the pH and have potential applications as a controlled drug release carrier.
Preparation and Characterization of Poly (N-Isopropylacrylamide-co-dimethylaminoethyl Methacrylate) Microgel Latexes

Abstract:Monodisperse cationic thermosensitive latex microgels have been prepared by radical-initiated precipitation polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide, methylene bisacrylamide using 2,2′-azobis(2-amidinopropane hydrochloride) as an initiator and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) as a cationic monomer. The final microgel latexes were characterized with respect to water-soluble polymer formation, particle size and size distribution. Adding cationic monomer (DMAEMA) was found to drastically affect the particle size, but not the size distribution as observed both by transmission electron microscopy and quasielastic light scattering (QELS). However, too high a DMAEMA concentration in the feed composition led to enhanced formation of water-soluble polymer. The volume phase-transition temperature of cleaned microgels examined by QELS (particle size versus temperature) was found to be around 32 °C and was slightly dependent on the concentration of the cationic monomer. The volume phase-transition temperature range becomes broader with increasing cationic monomer concentration. In addition, the pH of the polymerization medium was found to affect the final particle size and amount of water-soluble polymer formed.

Abstract:Temperature sensitive PolyNIPAAm hydrogels in the form of rod were prepared from the binary system of NIPAAm/water and ternary system of NIPAAm/Bis/water by gamma-irradiation with Co-60 source at room temperature, respectively. The prepared hydrogels had obvious temperature sensitivity(LCST is about 35.0 degrees C) and suitable mechanical properties. The incorporation of cross-linking agent, N, N'-methylene-bisacrylamide (Bis), into the binary system of monomer/water reduced the gelation dose. The maximum swelling ratio of hydrogels was decreased with the increasing of dose or the incorporation of Bis. The diffusion behavior of water in hydrogels obtained in this work was investigated. In addition, the drug delivery of fluoro uracili (Fu-5) from the hydrogels was investigated.
Intelligent temperature-pH dual responsive nanocellulose hydrogels and the application of drug release towards 5-fluorouracil

Abstract:As the typical bio-macromolecules, cellulose and its derivates are widely studied due to the fact that they are green and renewable resources in nature. In this work, intelligent temperature-pH sensitive nanohydrogels consisting of nanocellulose, thermal responsive monomer (N-isopropylacrylamide, NIPAM), and pH responsive monomer (acrylic acid, AA; acrylamide, AM) were prepared [NFC-g-(AA/AM)]-g-NIPAM, the [NFC-g-(AA/AM)]-g-NIPAM was characterized by FTIR, scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and automatic gas adsorption analysis (BET). The results showed that the copolymerization of AA, AM and NIPAM were carried out successfully. The specific surface area, total pore volume, average pore diameter and thermal stability of the modified nano-cellulose were increased. In addition, the as-prepared nanohydrogels with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) released more 5-FU at 40 °C and acidic condition compared to the room temperature and neutral pH, showing the characteristics of the temperature-PH dual response functionalization. The [NFC-g-(AA/AM)]-g-NIPAM have been proved to be the promising drug release nanohydrogels towards 5-FU, and the valuable findings might provide an idea for maximizing the potential of the nanocellulose-based nanohydrogels for the application of environmental pollution control.

Abstract:Isopropyl methacrylate (iPMA) was selected to copolymerize with N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) for synthesizing temperature-sensitive microgels. The aim of this study was to extend the application range of temperature-sensitive microgels by preparing thermosensitive microgels and tuning their volume-phase transition temperature (VPTT) through changing the content of the hydrophobic comonomers. Preliminary investigations by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and turbidimetric analysis show that the VPTTs of the pNIPAM microgels can be successfully tuned via changing the incorporation content of the hydrophobic iPMA.

Abstract:A novel series of anionic fluorine-containing amphiphilic graft copolymers, poly(hexafluorobutyl methacrylate-co-sodium 4-vinylbenzenesulfonate)-g-poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate [poly(HFMA-co-NaSS)-g-PEG], were prepared via the free radical copolymerization. The micellization behavior of the copolymers was studied by critical micelle concentration (CMC), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that poly(HFMA-co-NaSS)-g-PEG copolymers could self-assemble into core/shell structure micelles in aqueous solution. Afterward, the micelles stability was studied by zeta potential measurement, which demonstrated that the copolymer micelles had good stability in biological milieu. The interaction between the copolymer micelles and BSA was characterized by fluorescence spectroscopy, and the morphology of the micelles/BSA complexes was observed by TEM. The results demonstrated that the adsorption could be easily achieved between the copolymer micelles and BSA. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity was evaluated via MTT viability assay, indicating that the copolymer had low toxicity. Our study suggests that poly(HFMA-co-NaSS)-g-PEG micelles have a potential application as the protein drug carrier.

Abstract:Complementary interactions between the natural nucleobases is one of the important ways of biomolecular recognition. Although scientists have introduced such supramolecular non‐covalent interactions into biomimetic materials through different approaches in recent years, further research is still needed to confer structural features of biomolecules into emerging stimuli‐responsive microgels. In our study, a series of bis‐thymine end decorated flexible poly (N‐isopropyl acrylamide) (T‐PNIPAM‐T) were obtained through a thymine esterified RAFT agent. Meanwhile, a rigid polymeric backbone poly[1‐(4‐vinyl benzyl)] adenine (PSA), including several pendant adenines on the side chain was prepared. Through nucleobase complementary pairing subtle supramolecular cross‐linked three‐dimensional networks were constructed, and further self‐assembled to form microgels under the balance between hydrophilicity and block flexibility. More importantly, such supramolecular three‐dimensional microgels showed volumetric shrinkage in different water content environments and the assembly behavior under thermo and pH stimulated conditions. Abstract:We describe a new method for the preparation of fluorescent inorganic-nanoparticle composite microgels. Copolymer microgels with functional pendant groups were transferred via dialysis into tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution and mixed with colloidal solutions of semiconductor nanocrystals (quantum dots, QDs). CdSe QDs stabilized with trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) became incorporated into the microgels via ligand exchange of pendant imidazole (Im) groups for TOPO. PbS QDs stabilized with oleic acid were incorporated into microgels with pendant -COOH groups. This approach worked equally well with microgels based upon poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and those based upon an acetoacetylethyl methacrylate-N-vinylcaprolactam copolymer (PVCL). These composite hybrid materials were colloidally stable in THF, and maintained their colloidal stability after transfer to water, either via dialysis or by sedimentation-redispersion. In water, the composites exhibited similar thermal responsiveness to the parent microgels, with a small shift to lower temperature in the volume phase transition. This approach allows one to use inorganic nanoparticles synthesized under optimum conditions in organic media at high temperature and to prepare composite microgels directly by mixing the components in a water-miscible organic solvent.
