Abstract:Upflow anaerobic sludge bed reactors fed on glucose were used to investigate the effects of Ce3+ on soluble microbial products (SMP) production, which is the majority of the residual chemical oxygen demand present in the effluent. It was found that Ce3+ concentration of 0.05 mg/L had no significant effect on the amount of SMP production, whereas that of 1 mg/L led to the increase in SMP production. The molecular-weight distribution and carbohydrate analysis indicated that an increase in SMP production may be partly attributed to the release of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) into the bulk solution resulted from cerium toxicity, and the nucleic acids analysis suggested that increased cell lysis also contributed to SMP accumulation in the presence of Ce3+. The increase in SMP production in the presence of Ce3+ is possibly a consequence of the release of EPS and increased cell lysis due to cerium toxicity.
Effect of Ce3+ on Volatile Fatty Acid Concentrations During Anaerobic Granular Sludge Digestion

Abstract:Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of Ce3+ on volatile fatty acid(VFA) concentrations by anaerobic granular sludge digestion using D-Glucose and acetic sodium as substrate in the state of stabilization and restart-up. Results show that when the concentration of Ce3+ is lower than 1 mg/L, VFA concentration decreases, which suggests the transformation of butyric acid to acetic acid and acetic acid to methane is promoted. When the concentration of Ce3+ is 1-10 mg/L, the bacterial activity decreases and decomposition of the acetic acid and butyric acid becomes more difficult compared with the control. Adding Ce3+ brings little change in the constitution of VFA: 96% of VFA is acetic acid and butyric acid, while the propionic acid accounts for less than 3%. With the acetic sodium as the sole carbon and energy source, adding 0.05 mg/L Ce3+ could accelerate acetate degradation. After being conserved for 4 months, the activity of the Ce-containing anaerobic granular sludge is higher than that of the Ce-free sludge. The present of Ce contributes to the restart-up of anaerobic reactors.
Stimulation Effects of La3+ and Ce3+ on Methanogenesis of Anaerobic Granular Sludge with Different Substrates

Abstract:Static experiments were carried out to study the effect of rare earth elements,0.05mg · L-1 La3+ and Ce3+,on the methanogenesis of anaerobic granular sludge with different volatile fatty acid as substrates.The sludge was from different sources or stored under different conditions.Results showed that additions of Ce3+ to acetate substrate,La3+ or Ce3+ to propionate,and La3+ to lactate,all sped up the methanogenesis at the beginning of the reaction,and increased the Specific Methanogenic Activity(SMA)by 3%~8%.La3+ and Ce3+ had little effect on the shape of methane production curve but decreased the SMA by 9.21% and 3.37% respectively for formate substrate.La3+ depressed methane production rate at initial stage for acetate substrate but didn't decrease the SMA.Since 0.05mg · L-1 La3+ and Ce3+ could increase the degradation rate of propionate,they could have some practical meaning to the recovery of reactor's operation.After anaerobic granular sludge had stored at low temperature for a longtime,concentrations of La3+ and Ce3+ which had increased the SMA were likely to have little stimulation effect on the SMA or even depress.In case that low concentrations of La3+ and Ce3+ inhibited sludge's methanogenic activity,Ce3+ caused a slighter inhibition than La3+ under the same mass concentration.Acclimation and incubation of sludge favored its accommodation to the rare earth elements.
The double-edged effects of La2O3 and CeO2 on the performance of high-rate anaerobic sludge bed reactors and microbial mechanisms

Abstract:Industrial wastewaters, generated from such as abrasive and catalyst-producing processes, usually contain rare earth oxides: La2O3 and CeO2. When employing anaerobic methanogenesis technology to treat these industrial wastewaters, the impacts of La2O3 and CeO2 cannot be ignored. This study thoroughly investigated the long-term effects of La2O3 or CeO2 in high-rate anaerobic expanded sludge bed (EGSB) reactors. When compared to the control reactor, it was found that the addition of La2O3 led to an 11% decrease in chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency and 38% decrease in methane production rate (MPR). Similarly, the introduction of CeO2 resulted in a 9% in COD removal efficiency and a 17% decrease in MPR. Both La2O3 and CeO2 had positive influences on enhancing methanogenic activity of anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS). Through the results of quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and high-throughput sequencing analysis, it was revealed that La2O3 and CeO2 contributed to a balanced microbial community by promoting the growth of methanogens and suppressing anaerobic propionate and butyrate-producing bacteria. Meanwhile, La2O3 and CeO2 stimulated the proliferation of electroactive species: Geobacter and Methanospirillum. However, the results of quantification and characterization of Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) of AnGS showed both La2O3 and CeO2 reduced the presence of tryptophan substances in EPS and decreased the protein/polysaccharide ratio. This led to the disintegration of AnGS into smaller zoogloea complexes. The findings of this study offer valuable insights for early-warning and optimization of anaerobic methanogenesis treatment in dealing with industrial wastewater containing La2O3 and CeO2.

Abstract:ABSTRACT This study investigated the effect of organic shock loads on the stability of anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS). At double and triple shock intensity (8 and 12 kg COD/m3d organic loading rate (OLR), respectively), the accumulation of volatile fatty acids resulted in the decreasing pH of the reactors. The unstable performances of AnGS also appeared in the macroscopic properties, including the decreasing contents of relative hydrophobicity (RH), granular strength and diameter, and the fluctuation of EPS production. Noteworthily, the contents of loosely bound and tightly bound polysaccharide increased obviously and were higher than that in the control under double and triple OLR shock load. However, the growing trend of protein content was only found in the double OLR shock reactor. In addition, the N-hexanoyl-homoserine lactone (C6-HSL) content increased following the shock and then decreased during the recovery. The autoinducer-2 (AI-2) content gradually decreased under OLR shock conditions, and then rapidly increased during the recovery phase. The behaviour of the diffusible signal factor (DSF) was opposite that of AI-2. The combination of C6-HSL, AI-2 and DSF had a degraded effect on the properties of AnGS. The results provide a new reference for further research into the inter-effects among multiple signal molecules in anaerobic sludge. Insights into the Effects of CeO2 Nanoparticles on Medium-Chain Carboxylates Production from Waste Activated Sludge

Abstract:The synthesis of medium-chain carboxylates (MCCs) from waste-activated sludge (WAS) upgrading has received considerable attention. However, limited research has been conducted on the effects of CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) on this process. This study showed that 1 mg/g−TS of CeO2 NPs improved the solubilization of WAS, resulting in higher production of MCCs. At 5 mg/g−TS, CeO2 NPs weakly inhibited 3 biological steps. Despite this, there was an enhancement in WAS solubilization, thus the overall production of MCCs was similar to the control. However, doses of CeO2 NPs ranging from 25–100 mg/g−TS were unable to offset biological inhibition, leading to a decrease in MCC production. The toxic mechanisms involved were not the generation of reactive oxygen species or Ce ions from CeO2 NPs to anaerobic sludge, but instead the decline of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) and destruction of the cell membrane through physical penetration. Microbial community analysis confirmed that 1 mg/g−TS of CeO2 NPs increased the relative abundance of key bacteria involved in the anaerobic fermentation of WAS. The MCC microbe Clostridium sensu stricto was enriched in the control group, while the relative abundance of this genus was significantly reduced with 100 mg/g−TS CeO2 NPs.

Abstract:Due to the increased use of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs), their potential environmental risks have caused concern. However, their effects on the aerobic granular sludge (AGS) process and the later recovery of AGS are still unclear. In this study, we comprehensively determined the changes in pollutant removal and the levels of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in AGS that were exposed to CeO2 NP treatments (0 (the control, R0), 1 (R1), and 5 (R5) mg/L), following an increase in the influent chemical oxygen demand (COD). An increase in the CeO2 NP concentration enhanced their inhibitory effect on the removal of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP), and promoted the production of polysaccharides (PS) and proteins (PN) in loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS) or tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS), as well as the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) components in EPS, but had no long-term effects on the removal of organic matter. When the addition of CeO2 NPs was stopped and the concentration of influent COD increased, the TN and TP removal efficiencies in R1 and R5 slowly increased and recovered. In R1, they were only 4.55 ± 0.55% and 2.71 ± 0.58% lower than in R0, respectively, while the corresponding values for R5 were 5.06 ± 0.46% and 6.20 ± 0.63%. Despite the LB-EPS and TB-EPS concentrations in the R1 and R5 treatments recovering and being similar to the levels in the control when no CeO2 NPs were added, they were still slightly higher than in the R0, which indicating that the negative effects of CeO2 NPs could not be completely eliminated due to the residual CeO2 NP levels in AGS.

Abstract:Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of the rare earth ions La3+ and Ce3+ on the activity of anaerobic granular sludge and the kinetics of anaerobic digestion. The results showed that both of the ions can promote the Specific Methanogenic Activity (SMA) at concentrations from 0.01 to 0.1 mg·L-1 with a maximum promotion of 10.35% for La3+ and 20.79% for Ce3+. The EC50 concentrations were 5 mg·L-1 for La3+ and 1000 mg·L-1 for Ce3+, so La3+ is a stronger suppressant. The Michaelis-Menten model could be used to describe the kinetic behavior of the methane fermentation phase in anaerobic digestion. Addition of La3+ and Ce3+ increased the kinetic constants Vmax and Ks.
Organic binding iron formation and its mitigation in cation exchange resin assisted anaerobic digestion of chemically enhanced primary sedimentation sludge

Abstract:Fe based chemically enhanced primary sedimentation (CEPS) is an effective method of capturing the colloidal particles and inorganic phosphorous (P) from wastewater but also produces Fe-CEPS sludge. Anaerobic digestion is recommended to treat the sludge for energy and phosphorus recovery. However, the aggregated sludge flocs caused by the coagulation limited sludge hydrolysis and P release during anaerobic digestion process. In this study, cation exchange resin (CER) was employed during anaerobic digestion of Fe-CEPS sludge with aims of prompting P release and carbon recovery. CER addition effectively dispersed the sludge flocs. However, the greater dispersion of sludge flocs could not translate to higher sludge hydrolysis. The maximum hydrolysis and acidification achieved at lower CER dosage of 0.5 g CER/g TS. It was observed that the extents of sludge hydrolysis and acidification had a strongly negative correlation with the organic binding iron (OBI) concentration. The presence of CER during anaerobic digestion favored Fe(III) reduction to Fe(II), and then further induced iron phase transformation, leading to the OBI formation from the released organic matters. Meanwhile, higher CER dosage resulted in higher P release efficiency and the maximum efficiency at 4 g CER/g TS was four times than that of the control. The reduction of BD-P, NaOH-P and HCl-P in solid phase contributed most P release into the supernatant. A new two-stage treatment process was further developed to immigrate the OBI formation and improve the carbon recovery efficiency. Through this process, approximately 45% of P was released, and 63% of carbon was recovered as methane from Fe-CEPS sludge via CER pretreatment.
Antagonistic effects of surfactants and CeO 2 nanoparticles co-occurrence on the sludge fermentation process: Novel insights of interaction mechanisms and microbial networks

Abstract:Various pollutants commonly co-exist in the waste active sludge (WAS), but the interactive effects and mechanisms of co-occurrence pollutants on the WAS treatment remain unclear. This work mainly investigated the impacts of different surfactants ( i.e., HTAB and SDBS) and CeO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) co-occurrence on the WAS fermentation for short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production, and found that the CeO 2 NPs coexisting with surfactants caused antagonistic effects on the SCFAs generation (10.7% and 33.9% inhibition by HTAB and SDBS, respectively). The surfactants and CeO 2 NPs co-occurrence restrained the solubilization, hydrolysis, and acidification steps simultaneously. Moreover, the functional hydrolytic-acidogenic bacterial ( e.g., Haliangium and Bacteroidetes sp. ) and the microbial metabolic networks involved in extracellular hydrolysis ( e.g., pepd and NEU1 ), substrate metabolism ( e.g., ALDO and asdA ), and fatty acid biosynthesis ( e.g. , aarC and pct ) were all downregulated by 4.3–53.8% in the reactors with surfactants and CeO 2 NPs co-occurrence. The presence of surfactants enhanced the dispersibility and stability of CeO 2 NPs and the Ce dissolution (1.5–3.0 times higher). Also, surfactants contributed to the WAS disintegration, which could improve the interactive chances of microorganisms entrapped in WAS and CeO 2 NPs by promoting the transportation channels, and therefore aggravated the toxicity towards anaerobic species.

Abstract:The high Ce(III) content in ionic rare-earth tailings wastewater has hindered the application of anammox process in this field. Here, the effect of Ce(III) on the performance of anammox processes was investigated, and the evolution of microbial communities and functional genes was explored using metagenomic sequencing. The results showed that the reactor nitrogen removal rate decreased when the Ce(III) concentration reached 25 mg/L, although ammonia nitrogen removal (92.31%) and nitrogen removal efficiency (81.33%) remained at a high level; however, both showed a significant decreasing trend. The relative abundance of anammox bacteria increased continuously from P1–P5, reaching 48.81%, whereas the relative abundance of Candidatus jettenia reached 33.71% at P5, which surpassed that of Candidatus brocadia as the most abundant anammox bacteria, and further analysis of functional genes and metabolic pathways revealed that Candidatus brocadia was richer in biochemical metabolic genes, whereas Candidatus jettenia had richer efflux genes.

Abstract:Anaerobic biotechnology has been widely used to the treatment of swine wastewater, but its organic loading rate is far lower than the expected. In this study, the fatigue effect was observed for indigenous anaerobic sludge (IAS) of anaerobic digestion system treating swine wastewater. On the contrary, the enhancement effect was demonstrated for exogenous granular sludge (EGS) originated from the internal circulation reactor treating pulping wastewater. The results showed the anaerobic digestion of swine wastewater with acclimatized EGS was much better than with IAS, 10th-day COD removal efficiency of 85% and 37% respectively. The better performance of acclimatized EGS was attributed to the more efficient degradation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) as well as a stronger tolerance to the ammonia inhibition of swine wastewater. Revealed by molecular techniques, the acclimatized EGS contained more abundant syntrophic bacteria and methanogens than IAS. These functional microbes colonized in the acclimatized EGS could overcome the fatigue effect of IAS which contained a similar microbial community to pig gastrointestinal tract microbes. This study provides a feasible and promising way to enhance the efficiency of anaerobic digestion of swine wastewater.
Effects of CeO2 Nanoparticles on Bacterial Community and Molecular Ecological Network in Activated Sludge System.

Abstract:The increasing use of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) has caused concerns regarding their potential environmental risks. However, their effects on bacterial communities and network interactions in activated sludge process are still unclear. In this study, we carried out long-term exposure experiments (210 d) to investigate the influence of CeO2 NPs on wastewater treatment performance, bacterial community structure and network interactions in activated sludge systems. The results showed that long-term exposure to 1 mg/L CeO2 NPs induced the deterioration of denitrifying process, which was consistent with the inhibition of enzyme activities of nitrite oxidoreductase and nitrate reductase under CeO2 NPs. CeO2 NPs decreased the bacterial diversity and altered the overall bacterial community structure in activated sludge. Some dominant denitrifying bacteria, such as Flexibacter and Acinetobacter decreased significantly. Molecular ecological network analysis showed that CeO2 NPs decreased the network complexity of bacterial community, and probably promoted the competition in bacterial communities of activated sludge. These changes of denitrifying bacteria and the bacterial network may be relevant to the deterioration of denitrifying process. This study provides insights into how the bacteria community and their molecular ecological network respond to CeO2 NPs in activated sludge systems.
The effects of manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieve chitosan microspheres on sludge bacterial community structures during sewage biological treatment

Abstract:This study examines the effects of manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieve chitosan microspheres (Fe 3 O 4 @OMS-2@CTS) on anaerobic and aerobic microbial communities during sewage biological treatment. The addition of Fe 3 O 4 @OMS-2@CTS (0.25 g/L) resulted in enhanced levels of operational performance for decolourization dye X-3B. However, degradation dye X-3B inhibition in the presence of Fe 3 O 4 @OMS-2@CTS was recorded as greater than or equal to 1.00 g/L. Illumina MiSeq high throughput sequencing of the 16 S rRNA gene showed that 108 genera were observed during the anaerobic process, while only 71 genera were observed during the aerobic process. The largest genera ( Aequorivita ) decreased from 21.14% to 12.65% and the Pseudomonas genera increased from 10.57% to 12.96% according to the abundance in the presence of 0.25 g/L Fe 3 O 4 @OMS-2@CTS during the anaerobic process. The largest Gemmatimonas genera decreased from 21.46% to 11.68% and the Isosphaerae genera increased from 5.8% to 11.98% according to the abundance in the presence of 0.25 g/L Fe 3 O 4 @OMS-2@CTS during the aerobic process. Moreover, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results show that the valence states of Mn and Fe in Fe 3 O 4 @OMS-2@CTS changed during sewage biological treatment.
Performance and Microbial Community of an Expanded Granular Sludge Bed Reactor in the Treatment of Cephalosporin Wastewater

Abstract:In this study, the anaerobic treatment and microbial characteristics of high-concentration cephalosporin wastewater were studied. A pilot-scale expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactor was designed to treat cephalosporin wastewater, whose diameter, height and effective volume were 0.5 m, 4.9 m, 0.92m(3), respectively. With mixed high-concentration cephalosporin wastewater and municipal wastewater as a substrate, the anaerobic reactor was started and operated 414 days. An average COD removal efficiency of 72% was achieved at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 9.96 kg COD/(m(3).d), with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 25 h. The average methane content reached 82%. Methanobacterium and Methanomassiliicoccus were predominant archaea in the granular sludge for each of the organic loading rates, and the predominant methane-producing pathway was hydrogenotroph and methylotroph. Those results demonstrated that the EGSB reactor could treat high-concentration cephalosporin wastewater with a unique methane-producing pathway.
Microscale and molecular analyses of river biofilm communities treated with microgram levels of cerium oxide nanoparticles indicate limited but significant effects

Abstract:Cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles are used as in-fuel catalysts and in manufacturing processes, creating a potential for release to aquatic environments. Exposures at 1 and 10 μg/L CeO2-nanoparticles were made to assess effects during the development of river biofilm communities. Scanning transmission x-ray microscopy (STXM) indicated extensive sorption of nanoparticles to the community and co-localization with lipid moieties. Following 8 weeks of development, polycarbonate coupons were removed from the reactors and used for molecular analyses, denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis (DGGE-16S rRNA) and 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Microscopic imaging of the biofilm communities (bacterial, photosynthetic biomass, exopolymer composition, thickness, protozoan numbers), as well as carbon substrate utilization fingerprinting was performed. There was a trend toward reduced photosynthetic biomass, but no significant effects of CeO2 exposure were found on photosynthetic and bacterial biomass or biofilm thickness. Sole carbon source utilization analyses indicated increased utilization of 10 carbon sources in the carbohydrate, carboxylic acid and amino acids categories related to CeO2 exposures; however, predominantly, no significant effects (p < 0.05) were detected. Measures of microbial diversity, lectin binding affinities of exopolymeric substances and results of DGGE analyses, indicated significant changes to community composition (p < 0.05) with CeO2 exposure. Increased binding of the lectin Canavalia ensiformis was observed, consistent with changes in bacterial-associated polymers. Whereas, no significant changes were observed in binding to residues associated with algal and cyanobacterial exopolymers. 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing of community DNA indicated changes in diversity and shifts in community composition; however, these did not trend with increasing CeO2 exposure. Counting of protozoans in the biofilm communities indicated no significant effects on this trophic level. Thus, based on biomass and functional measures, CeO2 nanoparticles did not appear to have significant effects; however, there was evidence of selection pressure resulting in significant changes in microbial community composition.

Abstract:The effectiveness and treatment conditions of FeCl3- and AlCl3-coagulated municipal sewage sludge from chemically enhanced primary treatment (CEPT) using anaerobic digestion (AD) and the structure of microbial community were investigated. The results based on 297 measurements under different operational conditions demonstrate good average AD performance of CEPT sludge, that is, percent volatile solid reduction of 58 %, specific biogas production (or biogas yield) of 0.92 m3/kg volatile solids (VS) destroyed, and methane content of 65.4 %. FeCl3 dosing, organic loading rate, temperature, and hydraulic retention time all significantly affected AD performance. FeCl3 dosing greatly improved specific methane production (methane yield) by 38–54 % and significantly reduced hydrogen sulfide (H2S) content in biogas (from up to 13,250 to <200 ppm), contributing to higher methane recovery and simplified biogas cleaning for power generation. Metagenomic analysis suggested that anaerobic digesters of both CEPT sludge and combined primary and secondary sludge were dominated by Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Thermotogae, and Chloroflexi. However, Methanomicrobia methanogens were better enriched in the anaerobic digesters of CEPT sludge than in the combined sludge. Further, different sources of CEPT sludge with various chemical properties nurtured shared and unique microbial community composition. Combined, this study supports AD as an efficient technology for CEPT sludge treatment and poses first insights into the microbial community structure.

Abstract:In this study, two parallel lab-scale anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs), one of which was dosed with polyaluminum chloride (PAC) for membrane fouling control, were operated for treating excess activated sludge collected from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The AnMBRs were inoculated with anaerobic digested sludge collected from an anaerobic digester of another WWTP. The microbial community of digested sludge and cake layer in AnMBRs, as well as that of excess sludge, was analyzed through polymerase chain reaction coupled with denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) and Illumina MiSeq. The dynamic variation of archaeal community in AnMBRs was not as obvious as that of bacterial community based on the PCR-DGGE results. Under the circumstance of stable operation, Cloacimonetes, Chloroflexi, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Ignavibacteriae were observed as the predominant phyla in digested sludge based on the Illumina results. In addition to that, the cake layer possessed similar predominant phyla with the digested sludge but owned a higher diversity. Furthermore, overlapping bacterial communities were discovered between the excess sludge and digested sludge. However, the abundance of aerobic bacteria was substantially reduced, while the abundance of anaerobic microorganisms like phylum Cloacimonetes and Smithella was enriched in digested sludge over time. Additional PAC dosing, on the one hand, affected the bioavailable substrate, thus further changing the microbial community structure; on the other hand, aluminum itself also affected specific microbial communities. Besides, PAC dosing indirectly influenced the bacterial diversity in AnMBR as well.

Abstract:In this study, the effects of two different additives, powdered activated carbon (PAC) and ferric chloride (FeCl3) were evaluated on the characteristics of wastewater treatment sludge. The sludge activity was quantified by the measurement of the specific oxygen uptake rate (SOUR), dehydrogenase activity (DHA), microbial metabolic products including extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and soluble microbial products (SMP), and by the quantification of the microbial diversity. In a 60-d period of PAC addition (PAC-MBR), average SOUR was 6.11 ± 1.02 mg O2/g VSS h, and SOUR remained relatively stable. Average SOUR was 7.55 ± 2.40 mg O2/g VSS h, but it presented greater variability during the FeCl3 runs (Fe-MBR). During PAC-MBR, DHA was higher than during Fe-MBR and increased significantly with chemical oxygen demand; however, this correlation was low in Fe-MBR. Compared with PAC-MBR, EPS, and SMP in Fe-MBR showed a slowly decreasing trend. DGGE profiles of microbial diversity showed more total bands for PAC-MBR than for Fe-MBR; these bands may also have had greater intensity, suggesting that both the number of dominant microbial species and the overall microbial population was greater for PAC than for FeCl3 additive. Overall, microbial metabolic processes changed in more complex ways in Fe-MBR than in PAC-MBR. The observed variations in microorganism diversity and activity suggested a progressive microbial adaptation process.

Abstract:Membrane bioreactors ( MBR) can accumulate soluble microbial products ( SMP ) in the mixed liquor due to membrane retention. In order to investigate the effect of the accumulated SMP on the phosphorus removal ability of activated sludge, sludge samples with different amount of SMP were prepared for batch experiments of biological phosphorus removal. Compared with those with less SMP, samples with more SMP had higher phosphorus uptake rates of up to 0. 20 mg-P·( g-MLSS )-1·min-1 during aerobic process. Same results were found during long-run of an MBR-based simultaneous biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal process. Further study on the change of supernatant contents during anaerobic and aerobic processes showed that SMP was transferred from the aqueous phase to the sludge phase. During the aerobic process, decrease in Zeta potential implied that the colloidal portion in the supernatant might become unstable, which may explain the transfer of SMP and thus colloidal phosphorus. The transfer might also involve sweeping and trapping of phosphate and thus further accelerate phosphorus removal.
