Abstract:Ultra-short untraintense laser interacting with solid targets can produce significant electromagnetic pulses (EMPs), which are strongly pertinent to laser and target parameters. In this study, EMPs' generation due to pulsed laser (30 fs, 6×1019 W/cm2) irradiating aluminum foils are recorded and analyzed. The experimental results indicate a pre-ablation pulse (200 ps, 1×1012 W/cm2) that tends to enhance the electromagnetic emission inside the target chamber and the diagnostic cavity. The largest EMP signal is obtained when the pre-ablation pulse is incident on the target at 100 ps prior to the main laser beam. Meanwhile, the frequencies of EMPs are broadened up to 2 GHz in the diagnostic cavity in the 100 ps delayed case, indicating that EMPs with higher frequencies can be generated if the most energetic electrons are accelerated. The simulating results verify expansion of the pre-plasmas induced by the pre-ablation laser, which is beneficial to lift both the energy and quantity of hot electrons escaping from the target, accounting for the ehancement of EMPs. The resulting conclusions offer a new avenue to generate intense EMPs, which can be potentially used in nondestructive examination, high-power microwave source, and energy transfer.

Abstract:We report an efficient scheme to improve the proton acceleration and energy conversion efficiency by using double laser pulses with foil interaction. We find a significant increase in the peak energy, the total number, and the maximum energy of the accelerated protons for the double laser pulses with foil interaction compared to those in the single laser pulse case, while the total laser energy is kept constant. The role of the first pulse (pre-pulse) is to change the target electron distribution and reduce the reflection of succeeding laser pulse and hence enhance the laser absorption so that more energy of the second laser pulse (main pulse) is converted into the particle energy. The main pulse preferentially accelerates the slower electrons located deeper in the plasma, and it also accelerates the fast electrons due to volumetric heating. Finally, the protons are accelerated to high energy due to the laser break-out afterburner, when the target becomes relativistically transparent to the laser pulse.

Abstract:We report an ablation enhancement (both deepening and widening in ablation profiles) on nickel by ultrashort double-pulse laser irradiation, an exception of the typical reduction trend observed in ablation rates for metals irradiated with double-pulse excitations. Maximized at a pulse-separation (τs) of approximately 4 ps, the enhancement was observed before τs was increased to approximately the electron-lattice energy relaxation time. An achievement of ablation, by temporal shaping a weak pulse with energy well below the single-pulse ablation threshold into two considerably weaker pulses, was demonstrated. It is proposed that the enhanced electron-phonon coupling and drop of electronic heat conductivity, both of which result from the reductions in electron temperature (by pulse shaping), co-contribute to the widening in ablation profiles, while the former one is responsible for the deepening. This letter proposed an ablation enhancement approach to ultrashort laser processing of nickel.

Abstract:When an ultra-intense relativistic laser is irradiated on a solid target, terahertz (THz) pulses can be generated by coherent transition radiation when the laser-driven electron beams cross the rear surface of the target. The radiation energy depends on the number and energy of the electrons. By introducing a milli-joule picosecond ablation laser pulse, an underdense preplasma with a scale length of micrometers is generated at the front surface of the target. Electron beams with more charge and higher energy can be produced during the interaction between the following main laser pulse and the preplasma, which enhance the THz radiation and affect the radiation angle. Two dimensional particle-in-cell simulations demonstrate the improvement of electron beams and a nearly tenfold enhancement of THz radiation energy is observed.

Abstract:The methods of enhancement of the strong high-order harmonics of femtosecond pulses in laser-induced plasma are demonstrated. It comprises the application of the four techniques allowing the enhancement of harmonics in different spectral ranges. Among them are the selection of targets for ablation to create the conditions for resonance enhancement of single harmonic, formation of the quasi-phase-matching of a spectrally tunable group of harmonics, application of the two-color pump of plasma, and the formation of nanoparticles-contained plasmas. The number of generated coherent XUV photons increased in the region of single resonantly enhanced harmonic (62 nm) and the shorter-wavelength region (30–50 nm). The above techniques of harmonics enhancement allowed a significant (up to 50 times) growth in a whole harmonic yield in the case of indium plasma. We discuss the reasons preventing the joint implementation of the four methods of harmonics enhancement in the same spectral region.

Abstract:In this study, ultra-high frequency (UHF) induction heat was combined with laser deposition, which is referred to as laser–UHF induction hybrid deposition. On the one hand, this method takes the conventional laser induction hybrid deposition as reference, which uses the heat effect of UHF induction heat to optimize the residual stress of the deposited layer. On the other, this method utilizes the strong Lorentz force generated by the UHF induction heat to accelerate the flow velocity of the molten metal, which will be beneficial for microstructure refinement. Given that the thermal process and flow behavior during deposition are critical factors for the microstructure, a numerical model coupled with temperature field, electromagnetic field, flow field, and mass transfer field was developed to investigate the thermal process and flow behavior during laser–UHF induction hybrid deposition. Results showed that the UHF induction heat in laser-UHF induction hybrid deposition has pre-heating and slow-cooling effects on the deposited layer compared with laser deposition. The Lorentz force generated by UHF induction heat enhanced the flow velocity and the heat convection in molten pool. Research on the UHF induction heat parameters indicates that increasing the current frequency or current density can strengthen the slow-cooling effect of the UHF induction heat, and the flow velocity of the molten metal can be increased by 12.1% and 24.6%. Moreover, the maximum temperature in the molten pool decreased with increasing current frequency or current density because of the enhanced heat convection. Laser–UHF induction hybrid deposition experiment was also conducted, and the detected elemental content of the deposited layer and temperature showed good consistency with the simulated results. The grain size in the microstructure of the experimental laser–UHF induction hybrid deposited layer can be refined to approximately 3.358 μm at high current density conditions because of the enhanced fluid flow and heat convection in molten pool. This work provides an effective tool for predicting the thermal process and flow behavior during laser–UHF induction hybrid deposition, which will be an essential reference for evaluating microstructure quality.

Abstract:This paper reports the physical phenomenon of the temporal overlapping double femtosecond laser-induced ablation enhancement at different time delays. Detailed thermodynamic modeling demonstrates the ablation enhancement is highly dependent on the first pulse's laser fluence. In the case of the first pulse laser fluence being higher than material's ablation threshold, the ablation enhancement is attributed to optical absorption modification by the first pulse ablation. While the first pulse's laser fluence is lower than the material's ablation threshold, the first pulse-induced melting leads to much higher absorption of the second pulse. However, for the case of the first pulse's laser fluence even lower than melting threshold, the ablation enhancement decreases obviously with time delay. The results of the temporal overlapping double femtosecond laser ablation of poly( ε -caprolactone) are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions. © 2020 Chinese Laser Press

Abstract:Previous studies have shown that adding a section of critical density plasma on the front surface of solid target can effectively improve the laser energy absorption efficiency. Here, we have investigated laser–plasma interactions with different scale lengths of plasma in front of the target created by a pre-ablation laser pulse. A variety of experimental diagnostics employed together with particle-in-cell simulations give us deep insight into these processes. We found that the laser-induced electromagnetic pulse (EMP) intensity inside the target chamber and the target normal sheath acceleration sheath field accelerated protons were promoted using pre-plasma. The transient current due to hot electron emissions is considered to be one of the main radiation sources of EMP emissions within our measurement bandwidth. In our experiment, this current was guided to a grounded conductive wire attached to the rear surface of the target and measured by proton dynamic imaging technique. The discharging currents together with the guided fields were enhanced more than twice. The reflection spectra of experiments and simulations are compared, which reveal that the energy absorption efficiency was increased with proper plasma scale length, resulting in all the measured signals promoted.
Effect of non-local transport of hot electrons on the laser-target ablation

Abstract:The non-local heat transport of hot electrons during high-intensity lasers interaction with plasmas can preheat the fuel and limit the heat flow in inertial confinement fusion. It increases the entropy of the fuel and decreases the final compression. In this paper, the non-local electron transport model that is based on the improved SNB algorithm has been embedded into the radiation hydrodynamic code and is benchmarked with two classical non-local transport cases. Then we studied a 2$\omega$ laser ablating a CH target by using the non-local module. It is found that the non-local effect becomes significant when the laser intensity is above $1\times 10^{14} \mathrm{W/cm^{2}} $. The mass ablation rate from the SNB model is increased compared to that of the flux-limited model due to the lower coronal plasma temperature. This non-local model has a better agreement with the experimental results compared to that of the flux-limited model. The non-local transport is strongly dependent on the laser frequency, and the thresholds that the non-local transport should be considered are obtained for lasers of different frequencies. The appropriate flux-limiters that should be employed in the flux-limited model for different lasers are also presented. The results here should have a good reference for the laser-target ablation applications.

Enhanced plasma ion heating by lasers in inhomogeneous external magnetic field

Abstract:Recent studies have shown direct ion heating (vashistha2020new,Juneja_2023) by lasers EM (Electromagnetic) wave interacting with a plasma threaded by an external uniform magnetic field. The EM wave frequency was near the lower hybrid (LH) resonance frequency. The LH resonance occurs at the edge of the pass band of the magnetized dispersion relation. The group speed of the wave is negligible at resonance. In these studies, the energy absorption remains essentially confined at the plasma surface. However, to heat the ions in the bulk plasma and at a desired location, a tailored inhomogeneous external magnetic field profile has been chosen here. The strength of the magnetic field at the plasma edge is such that the EM wave frequency lies inside the pass band, where the group velocity has a significant value. It enables the wave to enter the bulk plasma. The external magnetic field is then spatially tailored appropriately to have the LH resonance at a desired spatial location inside the plasma. The Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations using the OSIRIS4.0 platform have been carried out, which demonstrates that the EM wave pulse comes to a standstill at the location of the resonance. The wave pulse is observed to break down subsequently, and the energy consequently goes dominantly to the local plasma ions. The absorption is significantly enhanced compared to the case in which the magnetic field profile was homogeneous. The dependence of absorption on the choice of magnetic field profile, the laser intensity, etc., has also been carried out.

Abstract:Laser proton acceleration can be enhanced by using target ablation, due to the energetic electrons generated in the ablation preplasma. When the ablation pulse matches main pulse, the enhancement gets optimized because the electrons' energy density is highest. A scaling law between the ablation pulse and main pulse is confirmed by the simulation, showing that for given CPA pulse and target, proton energy improvement can be achieved several times by adjusting the target ablation.

Abstract:Direct Laser Acceleration (DLA) of electrons during a high-energy, picosecond laser interaction with an underdense plasma has been demonstrated to be substantially enhanced by controlling the laser focusing geometry. Experiments using the OMEGA EP facility measured electrons accelerated to maximum energies exceeding 120 times the ponderomotive energy under certain laser focusing, pulse energy, and plasma density conditions. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that the laser focusing conditions alter the laser field evolution, channel fields generation, and electron oscillation, all of which contribute to the final electron energies. The optimal laser focusing condition occurs when the transverse oscillation amplitude of the accelerated electron in the channel fields matches the laser beam width, resulting in efficient energy gain. Through this observation, a simple model was developed to calculate the optimal laser focal spot size in more general conditions and is validated by experimental data.

Abstract:The coupling control of multi-physics fields has become a focal issue in the engineering domain, especially for achieving a more precise simulation and prediction of physical phenomena. This approach plays a crucial role in enhancing design efficiency and optimizing material selection. Focusing primarily on the controllability between microwave and temperature fields, the Emission Area Extension Structure (EAES) is a novel structure in response to the demand for high circularity in microwave ablation. Finite element analysis was employed to examine the distribution characteristics of electromagnetic and temperature fields in liver tissue under varying power and time conditions. Comparative analyses were conducted to evaluate the impact and performance of the EAES vs traditional structures in ablation. Incorporating the EAES into conventional ablation needles allows for a more concentrated distribution of the electromagnetic field without altering the needle diameter. In the simulation of tissue ablation, the circularity of ablation increased by 10%, while water-cooling efficiency increased by 11%. The introduction of EAES, while maintaining its minimally invasive characteristics, effectively enhanced the controllability of conformal ablation. Furthermore, a mathematical model was developed to serve as a theoretical basis for selecting optimal preoperative parameters, incorporating conditions such as ablation time, power, range, and circularity. Overall, by conducting a multi-physics field coupling analysis on microwave ablation needles and proposing the EAES solution, this study aims to enhance the predictability, controllability, and safety of conformal ablation.

Abstract:The dynamics of plasma and shockwave expansion during two femtosecond laser pulse ablation of fused silica are studied using a time-resolved shadowgraph imaging technique. The experimental results reveal that during the second pulse irradiation on the crater induced by the first pulse, the expansion of the plasma and shockwave is enhanced in the longitudinal direction. The plasma model and Fresnel diffraction theory are combined to calculate the laser intensity distribution by considering the change in surface morphology and transient material properties. The theoretical results show that after the free electron density induced by the rising edge of the pulse reaches the critical density, the originally transparent surface is transformed into a transient high-reflectivity surface (metallic state). Thus, the crater with a concave-lens-like morphology can tremendously reflect and refocus the latter part of the laser pulse, leading to a strong laser field with an intensity even higher than the incident intensity. This strong refocused laser pulse results in a stronger laser-induced air breakdown and enhances the subsequent expansion of the plasma and shockwave. In addition, similar shadowgraphs are also recorded in the single-pulse ablation of a concave microlens, providing experimental evidence for the enhancement mechanism.

Abstract:Thermal effect remains a thorny issue for femtosecond-laser surface engineering and nanostructuring on metallic targets with high pulse energies or high repetition rates, which needs to be paid adequate attentions. Herein, we have experimentally investigated the heat diffusion and accumulations during single-shot and multi-shot femtosecond laser ablation on metallic surfaces. We have for the first time observed a novel phenomenon that the thermal effect was intensified abruptly when the laser-pulse number goes over a threshold (approximately between 10 and 20 for aluminum alloy with laser fluence of 6 J cm-2), accompanied with a dramatic reduction of ablated depth and complicated plasma dynamics. Based on both optical and thermodynamic analysis, we introduced a defocusing-dominated plasma-assistant model for this abnormal thermal effect. This work explored the critical experimental parameters for femtosecond-laser surface modification and processing in micro-scale engineering applications.

Improvement in the Removal Efficiency of the Ultraviolet Laser Ablation by an Additional Simultaneous Irradiation of a Weak Infrared Laser

Abstract:Remarkable improvement in the removal efficiency of the ultraviolet laser (fourth harmonic wave of Nd:YAG laser) ablation was observed by irradiating a weak infrared laser (fundamental wave of Nd:YAG laser) simultaneously and additionally to various kinds of materials, such as copper, acrylic resin, alumina, silicon and amorphous carbon. The improvement ratio ranged from 50% to 280%, while the laser fluency of the infrared laser was as small as about 1.6% of that of the ultraviolet laser. Although, we have not succeed in explaining the reasons why this effect occurs, it will have the potentiality to decrease the photon cost in the wide range of ultraviolet laser machining, because the method and the phenomena are simple and clear. The improvement in the morphology was also observed, when it is applied to the laser lathe micromachining.

Abstract:In this study, the laser–plasma interaction and the resultant plasma enhancement by ultrashort double-pulse ablation of silicon are investigated. It is found that by carefully selecting inter-pulse delay, the plasma temperature and electron number density can be effectively increased, compared to the case of single-pulse ablation. The strong plasma enhancement is observed at long-pulse delay (above 20 ps), companied by the ablation rate suppression. At short-pulse delay (below 20 ps), strong ablation rate enhancement is observed, with no plasma enhancement. The spatial analysis of plasma temperature shows that the second pulse energy is mainly absorbed by the front portion of the plasma, where the temperature is increased the most. The plasma reheating leads to a faster expansion of the plasma.
