Abstract:Flapping flight has undoubtedly played a significant role in many of the aeronautical engineering achievements in the past several centuries. Flapping motions of wings/fins are used by animals (such as birds, insects and bats) to generate lift or thrust to keep them aloft in the surrounding fluid. Researches in this area are not only motivated by the fundamental interest of understanding the mechanism of flapping flight, but also the development of Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) based on biomimetics. In this lecture, we will address our efforts towards both experimental studies and virtual testing of flapping flight with our High End Digital Prototyping (HEDP) system. The aim of our research is to use physical and biological models to drive the engineering design of these vehicles. Firstly, two types of flapping-wing Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) with spatial four-bar drive mechanism will be presented, including the wind tunnel experiment and prototype flight test results. Secondly, various computation approaches have been adopted to simulate the flapping motions, including traditional moving mesh techniques based on Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) formulation, and Lattice Boltzmann method with immersed boundary methods. For a single wing-system, we have investigated the influences of various parameters on both the symmetric flapping and asymmetric flapping with bird-like or turtle-like flapping mode. For a tandem wing system, we have investigated the interaction between the hind wing and the vortex shedding off the fore wing and learned how to utilize the flow mechanism to achieve better aerodynamic performances. Moreover, Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) algorithm has been adopted to reveal the underlying physics due to its capability and accuracy in analyzing the complex transient systems. Finally, the flight control design of a dragonfly-like Flapping Wing Micro Aerial Vehicle (FWMAV) is presented, which has incorporated a Linear-Quadratic Regulator (LQR) method and an Iterative Learning Tuning (ILT). In general, we expect that these virtual testing by computational simulations and flight control can drive the design of our next generation flapping-wing UAVs in the future.

Abstract:An experimental investigation on a 10 cm bio-inspired flexible Flapping-Wing Micro Air Vehicle (FWMAV) was conducted in both hovering and forward-flight conditions with the objective to characterize its aerodynamic performance. The measurements in hovering conditions were performed with the particular objective to explore the effect of different wing configurations (i.e. different aspect ratios and wing flexibilities), whereas forward flight tests in a wind tunnel were carried out to assess the aerodynamic performance of the FWMAV as a function of flow speed, flapping frequency and body angle. The cyclic variation of forces (lift and thrust) generated as a result of the wing flapping was captured by means of a high-resolution force sensor, in combination with high-speed imaging to track the wing motion. Results of measurements in hover show that the flapping frequency, aspect ratio and wing flexibility have a crucial impact on the efficiency and the force generation during the flapping cycle. An estimated flight envelop for the MAV's operation is defined from the data obtained in the wind tunnel measurements. Furthermore, additional tests on several brushless DC motors provide a feasible option in future engine selection and design.

Abstract:The design of micro aerial vehicles has been long inspired by biological flyers such as birds and insects. The aerodynamic principles of flapping wing flights are complex due to the rapid wing motion and the inherent complex vortex dynamics. Several experimental and numerical investigations have been carried out in the past decades to uncover the mechanisms responsible for the improved aerodynamic capability of flapping wings. This paper provides an overview of the aerodynamics of flapping insect wings. After providing a brief overview of the aerodynamics of a single wing, we discuss how the vortex dynamics are altered in the case of tandem wings. A significant challenge to designing a stable MAV is the environmental effects stemming from the gust and ground presence. In this paper, we present how the force generation is altered due to such effects. Moreover, we point out unsolved research questions on insect flight whose answers could greatly help to improve the design of flapping wing MAVs.

Abstract:An adaptive airfoil wing was developed to improve the maneuverability and stability of micro air vehicles(MAVs) flying at low Reynolds numbers.The wing can be adaptively deformed by a set of compact high-efficiency crank-slider devices so that the wing provides the optimum aerodynamic efficiency at different angles of attack.Simulations and wind tunnel tests show that the adaptive wing greatly improves the MAV maneuverability and stall characteristics with better performance than conventional fixed wings.

Abstract:A key challenge in flapping-wing micro air vehicle (FWMAV) design is to generate high aerodynamic force/torque for improving the vehicle’s maneuverability. This paper presents a bio-inspired hover-capable flapping-wing micro air vehicle, named RoboFly.S, using a cross-tail wing to adjust attitude. We propose a novel flapping mechanism composed of a two-stage linkage mechanism, which has a large flapping angle and high reliability. Combined with the experimentally optimized wings, this flapping mechanism can generate more than 34 g of lift with a total wingspan of 16.5 cm, which is obviously superior to other FWMAVs of the same size. Aerodynamic force/torque measurement systems are used to observe and measure the flapping wing and aerodynamic data of the vehicle. RoboFly.S realizes attitude control utilizing the deflection of the cross-tail wing. Through the design and experiments with tail wing parameters, it is proved that this control method can generate a pitch torque of 2.2 N·mm and a roll torque of 3.55 N·mm with no loss of lift. Flight tests show that the endurance of RoboFly.S can reach more than 2.5 min without interferences. Moreover, the vehicle can carry a load of 3.4 g for flight, which demonstrates its ability to carry sensors for carrying out tasks.

Abstract:In this work, micro air vehicles (MAVs) equipped with bio-inspired wings are investigated experimentally in wind tunnel. The starting point is that insects such as dragonflies, butterflies and locusts have wings with rigid tubular elements (corrugation) connected by flexible parts (profiling). So far, it is important to understand the specific aerodynamic effects of corrugation and profiling as applied to conventional wings for the optimization of low-Reynolds-number aerodynamics. The present study, in comparison to previous investigations on the topic, considers whole MAVs rather than isolated wings. A planform with a low aperture-to-chord ratio is employed in order to investigate the interaction between large tip vortices and the flow over the wing surface at large angles of incidence. Comparisons are made by measuring global aerodynamic loads using force balance, specifically drag and lift, and detailed local velocity fields over wing surfaces, by means of particle image velocimetry (PIV). This type of combined global-local investigation allows describing and relating overall MAV performance to detailed high-resolution flow fields. The results indicate that the combination of wing corrugation and profiling gives effective enhancements in performance, around 50%, in comparison to the classical flat-plate configuration. These results are particularly relevant in the framework of low-aspect-ratio MAVs, undergoing beneficial interactions between tip vortices and large-scale separation.

Abstract:This article revisits a classic in antenna theory: the rectangular patch antenna (RPA). The radiated electric field is computed from its physical sources, i.e., the conduction and polarization currents, whose contributions are clearly identified. The symmetrical equivalent of the antenna is first analyzed, and a coordinate system is chosen with the z-axis parallel to the conduction currents. The radiation of these currents appears as close to that of two parallel dipoles carrying opposite currents, which means a very simple and easy-to-understand system. It is further shown that the effect of the polarization currents is typically much smaller. The analysis is fully self-sufficient (no reference specific to the subject is needed). The radiation is summarized by a figure with six parts that graphically explains the topic step by step.

Abstract:The design of a flexible wing can enhance the capability of gust resistances for a micro air vehicle (MAV). To understand the aerodynamics of the flexible wing and establish a mathematic model for it, experiments on the flexible wing were performed using a low Reynolds number wind tunnel. The established model can be used for flight simulation and control design of the MAV. Comparable experiments with a fixed wing of the same size and shape were also conducted which illustrated distinct aerodynamic advantages of the flexible wing. Experiment results indicate that the flexible wing has a larger angle of stall and a greater maximum lift coefficient than the fixed wing. However, the lift-drag ratio of the flexible wing varies in a complex way because the flexible wing also increases the drag with its lift growth. At low Reynolds number, the longitudinal stability of the flexible wing is a little better than that of the fixed wing. The longitudinal response frequency and damping features of the flexible wing at both modes of long and short periods are also better than those of the fixed wing.
Development and flight performance of a biologically-inspired tailless flapping-wing micro air vehicle with wing stroke plane modulation

Abstract:The tailless flapping-wing micro air vehicle (FW-MAV) is one of the most challenging problems in flapping-wing design due to its lack of tail for inherent flight stability. It must be designed in such a way that it can produce proper augmented control moments modulated by a closed-loop attitude controller for active stabilization. We propose a tailless FW-MAV with a wing stroke plane modulation mechanism, namely NUS-Roboticbird, which maneuvers by only using its flapping wings for both propulsion and attitude control. The flying vehicle has four wings comprised by two pairs, and each pair of wings and its stroke plane are driven by a motor and a servo, respectively. Attitude control moments of roll, pitch and yaw are generated by vectoring a pair of thrusts, which result from changing the flapping frequency (or motor speed) and wing stroke plane of the two pairs of wings. Free-flight tests show that the vehicle can climb and descend vertically (throttle control), fly sideways left and right (roll control), fly forwards and backwards (pitch control), rotate clockwise and counter-clockwise (yaw control), hover in mid-air (active self-stabilization), and maneuver in the figure-of-8 and fast forward/backward flight. These abilities are especially important for surveillance and autonomous flight in terms of obstacle avoidance in an indoor environment. Flight test data show that an effective mechanical control mechanism and control gains for attitude-controlled flights for roll, pitch and yaw are achieved, in particular, yaw control. Currently, the vehicle weighing 31 g and having a wingspan of 22 cm can perform fast forward flight at a speed of about 5 m s-1 (18 km h-1) and endure 3.5 min in flight with a useful payload of a 4.5 g onboard camera for surveillance.

Abstract:Flapping wing micro aerial vehicles (FWMAVs) are known for their flight agility and maneuverability. These bio-inspired and lightweight flying robots still present limitations in their ability to fly in direct wind and gusts, as their stability is severely compromised in contrast with their biological counterparts. To this end, this work aims at making in-gust flight of flapping wing drones possible using an embodied airflow sensing approach combined with an adaptive control framework at the velocity and position control loops. At first, an extensive experimental campaign is conducted on a real FWMAV to generate a reliable and accurate model of the in-gust flight dynamics, which informs the design of the adaptive position and velocity controllers. With an extended experimental validation, this embodied airflow-sensing approach integrated with the adaptive controller reduces the root-mean-square errors along the wind direction by 25.15% when the drone is subject to frontal wind gusts of alternating speeds up to 2.4 m/s, compared to the case with a standard cascaded PID controller. The proposed sensing and control framework improve flight performance reliably and serve as the basis of future progress in the field of in-gust flight of lightweight FWMAVs.

Abstract:The flexibility of insect wings and model wings in flapping-wing micro air vehicles (FWMAVs) is crucial to guarantee an economic flight. Since the wing deformation is bilaterally coupled with the aerodynamic force, conventional simulations on this fluid–structure interaction (FSI) problem mostly build up their models using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational solid dynamics (CSD) methods, which requires high computational costs. Alternatively, an analytical model is proposed here for a quick estimate of the aerodynamic performance and passive deformation on flexible flapping wings. The deformation is simplified into a rigid-body rotation at the wing root, a spanwise twist, and a shortening along the span. The aerodynamic force is approximated by a predictive quasi-steady model and the spanwise twist is modeled using a quadratic polynomial. Results show that the introduction of wing flexibility can attenuate the lift generation due to the negative rotational lift and adverse translation–rotation coupling effect after each stroke reversal. The wing with moderate stiffness is recommended to achieve a high lift. An increase of aspect ratio and root cutoff can also enhance the dimensional lift generation, while the most economic wing design has an aspect ratio around 5 and no root cut-off. More importantly, the increase of flapping frequency can only result in a lift enhancement within certain limits. However, the power consumption keeps increasing as the frequency goes up, indicating a significant breakdown of performance. Our findings can uncover the role of wing flexibility in both insects and FWMAVs and therefore contribute to the design of FWMAVs.

Abstract:Small-scale flapping-wing micro air vehicles (FWMAVs) are an emerging robotic technology with many applications in areas including infrastructure monitoring and remote sensing. However, challenges such as inefficient energetics and decreased payload capacity preclude the useful implementation of FWMAVs. Insects serve as inspiration to FWMAV design owing to their energy efficiency, maneuverability, and capacity to hover. Still, the biomechanics of insects remain challenging to model, thereby limiting the translational design insights we can gather from their flight. In particular, it is not well-understood how wing flexibility impacts the energy requirements of flapping flight. In this work, we developed a simple model of an insect drive train consisting of a compliant thorax coupled to a flexible wing flapping with single-degree-of-freedom rotation in a fluid environment. We applied this model to quantify the energy required to actuate a flapping wing system with parameters based off a hawkmoth Manduca sexta. Despite its simplifications, the model predicts thorax displacement, wingtip deflection and peak aerodynamic force in proximity to what has been measured experimentally in flying moths. We found a flapping system with flexible wings requires 20% less energy than a flapping system with rigid wings while maintaining similar aerodynamic performance. Passive wing deformation increases the effective angle of rotation of the flexible wing, thereby reducing the maximum rotation angle at the base of the wing. We investigated the sensitivity of these results to parameter deviations and found that the energetic savings conferred by the flexible wing are robust over a wide range of parameters.

Abstract:Insect wings are deformable structures that change shape passively and dynamically owing to inertial and aerodynamic forces during flight. It is still unclear how the three-dimensional and passive change of wing kinematics owing to inherent wing flexibility contributes to unsteady aerodynamics and energetics in insect flapping flight. Here, we perform a systematic fluid-structure interaction based analysis on the aerodynamic performance of a hovering hawkmoth, Manduca, with an integrated computational model of a hovering insect with rigid and flexible wings. Aerodynamic performance of flapping wings with passive deformation or prescribed deformation is evaluated in terms of aerodynamic force, power and efficiency. Our results reveal that wing flexibility can increase downwash in wake and hence aerodynamic force: first, a dynamic wing bending is observed, which delays the breakdown of leading edge vortex near the wing tip, responsible for augmenting the aerodynamic force-production; second, a combination of the dynamic change of wing bending and twist favourably modifies the wing kinematics in the distal area, which leads to the aerodynamic force enhancement immediately before stroke reversal. Moreover, an increase in hovering efficiency of the flexible wing is achieved as a result of the wing twist. An extensive study of wing stiffness effect on aerodynamic performance is further conducted through a tuning of Young's modulus and thickness, indicating that insect wing structures may be optimized not only in terms of aerodynamic performance but also dependent on many factors, such as the wing strength, the circulation capability of wing veins and the control of wing movements.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been widespread interest in the design of microair vehicles (MAVs) for flapping flight with high-aspect ratio wings due to their high efficiency and energy savings. However, the flexibility of a flapping wing causes the aeroelastic effect, which remains a subject of investigation. Generally, existing research simulates active bending and twisting of flexible wings under the assumption of neglecting flapping inertia. In this research, the kinematic optimization of a bionic wing with passive deformation in forward flight while undergoing flapping and pitching is considered. To this end, a computational aeroelasticity framework, which includes the three-dimensional unsteady vortex lattice method (UVLM) and the Newmark-β method, is constructed for flapping flight. Under the assumption of linear elastic deformation, this tool is capable of simulating attached flows over a thin wing and capturing unsteady effects of wakes. A bionic numerical wing with an aspect ratio of 6.5, chord Reynolds number of 1.9 × 105, and reduced frequency less than 0.1 is investigated in kinematic optimization. The computational aeroelasticity framework is combined with a global optimization algorithm to identify the optimal kinematics that maximize the propulsive efficiency under the minimum average lift constraint. Two types of numerical wings, rigid wing and flexible wing, are considered here to compare the influence of deformation on the aerodynamics of the flapping wing. The results show that the aeroelastic effect, which increases the flapping amplitude, yields a significant improvement in terms of propulsive efficiency. In addition, the optimization algorithm maximizes the thrust efficiency while satisfying the required lift. Moreover, the optimal kinematics of both the rigid wing and the flexible wing reach the maximum flapping angle, which indicates that a larger range of motions is needed for optimal kinetics when loosening the boundary conditions.

Abstract:Over hundreds of millions of years of natural selection, hummingbirds have evolved excellent flight characteristics. This ingenious wing structure provides a new inspiration for the design of bionic flapping wings. In this paper, a kind of bionic flexible flapping wing is designed with a hummingbird as the prototype, its parametric aerodynamic characteristics are analyzed, and its feasibility is verified by simulation. Combined with the simulation results, the aerodynamic parameters such as lift, drag, and lift-drag ratio are comprehensively considered, and the optimal parameter combination is 5 m/s-20 Hz. Under this parameter combination, the aerodynamic performance is the best, and the lift-drag ratio is as high as 13.3. This paper can provide a theoretical basis and technical reference for further development of bionic flapping wing MAV design.

Abstract:Flying animals such as insects display great flight performances with high stability and maneuverability even under unpredictable disturbances in natural and man-made environments. Unlike man-made mechanical systems like a drone, insects can achieve various flapping motions through their flexible musculoskeletal systems. However, it remains poorly understood whether flexibility affects flight performances or not. Here, we conducted an experimental study on the effects of the flexibility associated with the flapping mechanisms on aerodynamic performance with a flexible flapping mechanism (FFM) inspired by the flexible musculoskeletal system of insects. Based on wing kinematic and force measurements, we found an appropriate combination of the flexible components could improve the aerodynamic efficiency by increasing the wingbeat amplitude. Results of the wind tunnel experiments suggested that, through some passive adjustment of the wing kinematics in concert with the flexible mechanism, the disturbance-induced effects could be suppressed. Therefore, the flight stability under the disturbances is improved. While the FFM with the most rigid spring was least efficient in the static experiments, the model was most robust against the wind within the range of the study. Our results, particularly regarding the trade-off between the efficiency and the robustness, point out the importance of the passive response of the flapping mechanisms, which may provide a functional biomimetic design for the flapping micro air vehicles (MAVs) capable of achieving high efficiency and stability.

Aerodynamic performance of a bio-inspired flapping wing with local sweep morphing

Abstract:Birds and bats frequently reconfigure their wing planform through a combination of flapping and local sweep morphing, suggesting a possible approach for improving the performance of micro aerial vehicles. We explore the effects of combined flapping and local sweep morphing on aerodynamic performance by employing a bio-inspired two-jointed flapping wing with local sweep morphing. The bio-inspired wing consists of inner and outer sections, which flap around the root joint (shoulder) and the midspan joint (wrist), respectively. The aerodynamic forces and the unsteady vortex structures are evaluated by numerically solving the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations. The results show that combined flapping and local sweep morphing can significantly enhance the aerodynamic performance. In particular, the average lift coefficient is 1.50 times greater than that of simple gliding with single local sweep morphing. Combined flapping and local sweep morphing also has a relatively high pitch moment and shifts the aerodynamic center position backward, producing advantages in terms of maneuverability/agility and stability.We find that the vortex structures associated with the combined motion feature midspan vortices, which arise from the leading-edge vortices of the inner wing and contribute to the enhanced aerodynamic performance. We show that the kinematics of combined flapping and local sweep morphing can be further optimized if the midspan vortices can be captured by the outer wing.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the development of our latest flapping-wing micro air vehicle (FW-MAV), named Explobird, which features two wings with a wingspan of 195 mm and weighs a mere 25.2 g, enabling it to accomplish vertical take-off and hover flight. We devised a novel gear-based mechanism for the flapping system to achieve high lift capability and reliability and conducted extensive testing and analysis on the wings to optimise power matching and lift performance. The Explobird can deliver a peak lift-to-weight ratio of 1.472 and an endurance time of 259 s during hover flight powered by a single-cell LiPo battery. Considering the inherent instability of the prototype, we discuss the derivatives of its longitudinal system, underscoring the importance of feedback control, position of the centre of gravity, and increased damping. To demonstrate the effect of damping enhancement on stability, we also designed a passive stable FW-MAV. Currently, the vehicle is actively stabilised in roll by adjusting the wing root bars and in pitch through high-authority tail control, whereas yaw is passively stabilised. Through a series of flight tests, we successfully demonstrate that our prototype can perform vertical take-off and hover flight under wireless conditions. These promising results position the Explobird as a robust vehicle with high lift capability, paving the way towards the use of FW-MAVs for carrying load equipment in multiple tasks.
