Abstract:To investigate absorption and accumulation characteristics of plants to soil mercury, plants and corresponding soils were collected from some pollution sites in Huainan mining area. The mercury contents in soils and different parts of plant (stem-leaf and root) were analyzed with atomic fluorescence spectrometer. The results show that the mean contents of soil mercury in different sampling sites ranged from 0.089 to 0.184mg/kg, which was several times of the Soil Background Value of China and Huainan. But most soil samples belong to the secondary standard, according to GB15618-1995. The mean contents of stem-leaf and root mercury ranged from 0.029 to 0.271mg/kg and from 0.056 to 0.191mg/kg, respectively. The bioaccumulation factor of stem-leaf and root ranged from 0.411 to 1.380 and from 0.528 to 1.303, respectively. Some plant species have a strong ability to accumulate more mercury, such as Annual fleabane, Wild artemisia and Geranium, which can be considered as hyper-accumulator plant species in the remediation of soil mercury pollution. © 2011 IEEE.
Fine root branch orders contribute differentially to uptake, allocation, and return of potentially toxic metals

Abstract:Growing evidence has revealed high heterogeneity of fine root networks in both structure and function, with different root orders corporately maintaining trees' physiological activities. However, little information is available on how fine root heterogeneity of trees responds to environmental stresses. We examined concentrations of seven potentially toxic metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) within fine root networks and their correlations with root morphological and macro-elemental traits in six Chinese subtropical trees. The contributions of different orders of roots to fine-root metal storage and return were also estimated. Results showed no consistent pattern for the correlation among different metal concentration against root traits. Unlike root metal concentration that generally decreased with root order, root metal storage was commonly lowest in middle root orders. Root senescence was at least comparable to leaf senescence contributing to metal removal. Although the first-order roots constituted 7.2-22.3% of total fine root biomass, they disproportionately contributed to most of metal return fluxes via root senescence. The two distinct root functional modules contributed differentially to metal uptake, allocation, and return, with defensive (lower-order) roots effectively stabilizing and removing toxic metals and bulk buffering (higher-order) roots possessing a persistent but diluted metal pool. Our results suggest a strong association of physiological functions of metal detoxification and metal homeostasis with the structural heterogeneity in fine root architecture. © 2013 American Chemical Society.
Isotopic and Spectroscopic Investigation of Mercury Accumulation in Houttuynia cordata Colonizing Historically Contaminated Soil

Abstract:Houttuynia cordata Thunb (H. cordata) is a native vegetable colonizing mercury (Hg) mining sites in the southwest of China; it can accumulate high Hg concentrations in the rhizomes and roots (edible sections), and thus consumption of H. cordata represents an important Hg exposure source to human. Here, we studied the spatial distribution, chemical speciation, and stable isotope compositions of Hg in the soil-H. cordata system at the Wuchuan Hg mining region in China, aiming to provide essential knowledge for assessing Hg risks and managing the transfer of Hg from soils to plants and agricultural systems. Mercury was mainly compartmentalized in the outlayer (periderm) of the underground tissues, with little Hg being translocated to the vascular bundle of the stem. Mercury presented as Hg-thiolates (94% ± 8%), with minor fractional amount of nanoparticulate β-HgS (β-HgSNP, 15% ± 4%), in the roots and rhizomes. Analysis of Hg stable isotope ratios showed that cysteine-extractable soil Hg pool (δ202Hgcys), root and rhizome Hg (δ202Hgroot, δ202Hgrhizome) were isotopically lighter than Hg in the bulk soils. A significant positive correlation between δ202Hgcys and δ202Hgroot was observed, suggesting that cysteine-extractable soil Hg pool was an important Hg source to H. cordata. The slightly positive Δ199Hg value in the plant (Δ199Hgroot = 0.07 ± 0.07‰, 2SD, n = 21; Δ199Hgrhizome = 0.06 ± 0.06‰, 2SD, n = 22) indicated that minor Hg was sourced from the surface water. Our results are important to assess the risks of Hg in H. cordata, and to develop sustainable methods to manage the transfer of Hg from soils to agricultural systems.

Abstract:Root traits play significant roles in plant resource-use strategies, and are good predictors of plant growth and survival. However, their predicting role in phytoremediation remains poorly understood. In this study, sixteen root traits were measured across eleven woody species grown in Pb-Zn mine tailings of Southeastern China, to examine whether there is a hypothesized root economics spectrum (RES) under extremely high level of multiple HM stressors and to evaluate the importance of root traits in explaining phytoremediation functioning. Our findings provide evidence for a multidimensional root economics spectrum (RES) including one main trend of ‘slow-fast’ strategy, and a trend representing a trade-off between root system size and root tissue density. Another trade-off between root cadmium concentration and root dry matter content implied the existence of a presumable biomass cost for heavy metal accumulation, which was proved to be constrained by RES. Root traits explained HM translocation and bioconcentration and linked with phytoremediation services: roots with more acquisitive traits promote HM translocation, whilst conservative roots fostered bioconcentration. This study highlights the important role of root size-related traits in the RES framework, and would support the trait-based selection of nurse plants to restore ecosystem functions.

Abstract:Fine roots constitute a large and dynamic component of the carbon cycles of terrestrial ecosystems. The reported fivefold discrepancy in turnover estimates between median longevity (ML) from minirhizotrons and mean residence time (MRT) using carbon isotopes may have global consequences. Here, a root branch order-based model and a simulated factorial experiment were used to examine four sources of error. Inherent differences between ML, a number-based measure, and MRT, a mass-based measure, and the inability of the MRT method to account for multiple replacements of rapidly cycling roots were the two sources of error that contributed more to the disparity than did the improper choice of root age distribution models and sampling bias. Sensitivity analysis showed that the rate at which root longevity increases as order increases was the most important factor influencing the disparity between ML and MRT. Assessing root populations for each branch order may substantially reduce the errors in longevity estimates of the fine root guild. Our results point to the need to acquire longevity estimates of different orders, particularly those of higher orders.

Abstract:Fine-root decomposition contributes a substantial amount of nitrogen that sustains both plant productivity and soil metabolism, given the high turnover rates and short root life spans of fine roots. Fine-root decomposition and soil carbon and nitrogen cycling were investigated in a 1-year field litterbag study on lower-order roots (1–2 and 3–4) of Pinus massoniana to understand the mechanisms of heterogeneity in decomposition rates and further provide a scientific basis for short-time research on fine-root decomposition and nutrient cycling. Lower-order roots had slower decay rates compared with higher-order roots (5–6). A significantly negative correlation was observed between the decay constant mass remaining and initial N concentrations as well as acid unhydrolyzable residues. Results also showed that in lower-order roots (orders 1–2 and 3–4) with a lower C:N ratio, root residual N was released and then immobilized, whereas in higher-order roots (order 5–6) with a higher C:N ratio, root residual N was immobilized and then released in the initial stage. In the later stage, N immobilization occurred in lower-order roots and N release in higher-order roots, with the C:N ratio gradually decreasing to about 40 in three branching-order classes and then increasing. Our results suggest that lower-order roots decompose more slowly than higher-order roots, which may result from the combined effects of high initial N concentration and poor C quality in lower-order roots. During the decomposition of P. massoniana, N release or N immobilization occurred at the critical C:N ratio.

Abstract:In the environmental cycle of mercury (Hg), plants link the atmosphere, soil sphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere, serving as important sites for Hg transformation and translocation across these domains. The absorption and migration of Hg by plants play a critical role in the natural or environmental cycle of Hg. In this review, we outlined the existing technical methods for studying Hg behaviours involving plants, summarized the uptake pathways of Hg by different plant tissues from the environment, analyzed the transformation processes of Hg in plants and its various migration pathways, and demonstrated the changes in the source-sink relationship of Hg between plants and the environment. Additionally, we highlight knowledge gaps in existing research concerning the mechanisms of Hg transformation processes in plants, the role of marine plants in the environmental cycle of Hg, and the impact of global change on Hg cycle. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of current research on the relationship between Hg and plants, facilitating a quick understanding of the research progress and highlighting potential directions for future studies.

Abstract:Abstract The subtropical forest soil in southern China has accumulated a large amount of historically deposited mercury (Hg), which may result in Hg re-emission to the atmosphere and contribute to the global Hg cycle. In this study, the soil-atmosphere exchange of gaseous elemental mercury (Hg0) was monitored using a dynamic flux chamber (DFC) method at three forest sites, with different levels of soil Hg content and atmospheric Hg0 concentration. Specifically, the background testing site, located in Qianyanzhou, showed a net annual soil Hg0 emission (2.12 ng m−2 h−1 during the day and 2.23 ng m−2 h−1 at night), with significant diurnal and seasonal variations. In contrast, the moderately polluted site, which was in Tieshanping (suburb of Chongqing city), showed a much lower annual soil Hg0 emission (0.74 ng m−2 h−1 during the day) and even negative values in spring and winter. The last site, located in Zhuzhou (near a zinc smelter) with heavy Hg contamination, showed an extremely high soil emission all through the year (37.1 ng m−2 h−1 during the day), but relatively lower value in summer (1.37 ng m−2 h−1 during the day). Overall, these results clearly indicated the stimulate effect of high soil Hg content and the suppression effect of high atmospheric Hg0 concentration on soil Hg0 emission. By considering the results, we would suggest that the future Hg emission abatement from anthropogenic sources should enhance the re-emission of historically deposited Hg from subtropical forests, thus delay the decrease in atmospheric Hg0 concentration.
Getting to the root of root-microbe interactions

Abstract:Microbial relationships with roots influence many ecosystem functions and nutrient fluxes, including their sometimes-profound effects on plant health and productivity. Fine roots were often classified with a diameter less than 2 mm, but fine roots under that size perform distinct functional roles in the environment. Importantly, two broad functional categories of fine roots are absorptive and transportive, with absorptive fine roots acting as metabolic hotspots for root activity. In two of our recent studies, we have shown that several microbial community characteristics differ between absorptive and transportive fine roots, including composition, abundance, and function, as well as the root metabolome. This highlights a growing recognition within microbial ecology that we must consider fine-scale environmental variability, such as root physiology and morphology, when interpreting microbial patterns. In this commentary, we summarize the findings of our latest article, further speculate on some of these patterns, and suggest future studies for examining decomposition and applying cutting-edge single-cell sequencing techniques.

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) is a prevalent and harmful contaminant that persists in the environment. For phytoremediation, it is important to discover which plants can bioaccumulate meaningful amounts of Hg while also tolerating its toxicity. Additionally, increasing biodiversity could create a more resilient and self-sustaining system for remediation. This study explores whether mixed populations of Lemna minor and Spirodela polyrhiza can better bioaccumulate and tolerate Hg than monocultures. Mono- and mixed cultures of L. minor and S. polyrhiza were grown in mesocosms of 0.5 μg/L or 100 μg/L Hg (HgCl 2 ) spiked water for 96 h. Change in weight of duckweed was used to assess Hg tolerance. Diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGTs) were used as surrogate monitoring devices for bioavailable levels of Hg. For biomass growth, the mixed culture of the L. minor was greater than the monoculture at the high dose. The L. minor accumulated more Hg in the mixed culture at the low dose while the S. polyrhiza was higher in the mixed at the high dose. Hg speciation in water was modeled using Windermere Humic Aqueous Model 7 (WHAM7) to compare the bioavailable species indicated by the DGTs. Potentially due to the controlled conditions, the WHAM7 output of bioavailable Hg was almost 1:1 to that estimated by the DGTs, indicating good predictive capability of geochemical modeling and passive sampler DGT on metal bioavailability. Overall, the mixed cultures statistically performed as well as or better than the monocultures when tolerating and bioaccumulating Hg. However, there needs to be further work to see if the significant differences translate into practical differences worth the extra resources to maintain multiple species.

Abstract:Most studies of forest litter dynamics examine the biochemical characteristics and decomposition of leaf litter, but fine roots are also a large source of litter in forests. We quantified the concentrations of eight biochemical fractions and nitrogen (N) in leaf litter and fine roots at four sugar maple (Acer saccharum)-dominated hardwood forests in the north-central United States. We combined these results with litter production data to estimate ecosystem biochemical fluxes to soil. We also compared how leaf litter and fine root biochemistry responded to long-term simulated N deposition. Compared with leaf litter, fine roots contained 2.9-fold higher acid-insoluble fraction (AIF) and 2.3-fold more condensed tannins; both are relatively difficult to decompose. Comparatively, leaf litter had greater quantities of more labile components: nonstructural carbohydrates, cellulose and soluble phenolics. At an ecosystem scale, fine roots contributed over two-thirds of the fluxes of AIF and condensed tannins to soil. Fine root biochemistry was also less responsive than leaf litter to long-term simulated N deposition. Fine roots were the dominant source of difficult-to-decompose plant carbon fractions entering the soil at our four study sites. Based on our synthesis of the literature, this pattern appears to be widespread in boreal and temperate forests.

Abstract:urban mangroves affected by surrounding urbanization and anthropogenic activities, the fate of mercury (Hg) in sediment-mangrove system remains unclear. In this study, four urban mangroves with different urban functional zonings in fast-developing Shenzhen of China were selected: Shajing mangrove (SJM) and Xixiang mangrove (XXM) featured with industry district, Futian mangrove (FTM) and Baguang mangrove (BGM) featured with central business district and ecological preserve, respectively. The distributions of Hg in sediment, iron plaque (IP), and Kandelia obovata were determined. The mean concentrations of total Hg in mangrove sediments were SJM > XXM, FTM > BGM. Higher ecological risk was also detected in SJM based on geo-accumulation index, potential ecological risk factor, and contamination factor. The speciation analysis of Hg in non-rhizosphere sediments showed that residual, oxidizable, and volatile Hg acted as dominant fractions in urban mangroves, with volatile Hg to be important for Hg bioaccumulation in K. obovata. IP acted as a natural barrier to limit transfer of Hg from sediment to K. obovate due to lower Hg concentrations in IP compared to that in sediment. In terms of the total and bioavailable Hg, translocation factors (TF) of Hg in mangroves featured with different urban functions were: TFtotal: BGM (0.23) approximate to FTM (0.23) > SJM (0.15) approximate to XXM (0.14); TFavail: BGM (0.81) approximate to FTM (0.74) > SJM (0.40) approximate to XXM (0.37). The reduced TFs of Hg were important for protecting K. obovata from heavy Hg pollution in urban mangroves featured with industry district.

Abstract:为了解重金属汞在非根际沉积物-根际沉积物-红树植物连续体系中的分布特征和迁移规律,以及沉积物中汞的化学形态特征,于深圳湾福田红树林实地采集红树植物幼苗样品及其林下沉积物样品,采用连续提取法对沉积物中汞的各种化学形态进行提取,通过冷原子荧光光谱仪进行定量分析。研究对象包括福田红树林3种常见红树植物,包括白骨壤(Avicennia marina)、桐花树(Aegiceras corniculatum)2个本土种和海桑(Sonneratia caseolaris)1个引进种,并以无植被覆盖的光滩作为空白对照。结果表明,在沉积物-红树植物体系中,根际和非根际沉积物中的总汞含量均高于红树植物幼苗。进入植物体后,汞在茎中的含量均小于根和叶。本土种植株表现出较强的汞积累能力。白骨壤幼苗汞积累量最高,质量分数达到45.32 ng·g-1,其次为桐花树幼苗,汞质量分数为23.49 ng·g-1。3种红树植物对汞的生物积累因子在0.02~0.35范围内,迁移因子处于0.4~0.99范围内,均低于1,表明它们从土壤吸收、并向地上部分运输汞的能力较弱,倾向于采取金属排斥策略,以实现植物体的自我保护。非根际沉积物中汞的各个化学形态质量百分比表现为有机结合态>可挥发态>残渣态>可交换态>碳酸盐结合态>铁锰氧化物结合态,根际沉积物中汞表现为可挥发态>机结合态>残渣态>铁锰氧化物结合态>可交换态>碳酸盐结合态,总体表现为生物可利用态和潜在可利用态质量分数较高,不可利用态较少。与本土种相比,引进种海桑能够将更多汞以稳定性相对较高的生物不可利用态和潜在可利用态形式固定于土壤中,表现出较好的治理汞污染能力。

Abstract:The biotic enzymatic reduction of mercury II [Hg(II)] to elemental Hg [Hg(0)] is an important pathway for Hg detoxification in natural ecosystems. However, the mechanisms of Hg(II) volatilization and resistance in fungi have not been understood completely. In the present study, we investigated the mechanisms of Hg(II) volatilization and resistance in the fungus Lecythophora sp. DC-F1. Hg(II) volatilization occurred during the investigation via the reduction of Hg(II) to Hg(0) in DC-F1. Comparative transcriptome analyses of DC-F1 revealed 3439 differentially expressed genes under 10 mg/L Hg(II) stress, among which 2770 were up-regulated and 669 were down-regulated. Functional enrichment analyses of genes and pathways further suggested that the Hg(II) resistance of DC-F1 is a multisystem collaborative process with three important transcriptional responses to Hg(II) stress: a mer-mediated Hg detoxification system, a thiol compound metabolism, and a cell reactive oxygen species stress response system. The phylogenetic analysis of merA protein homologs suggests that the Hg(II) reduction by merA is widely distributed in fungi. Overall, this study provides evidence for the reduction of Hg(II) to Hg(0) in fungi via the mer-mediated Hg detoxification system and offers a comprehensive explanation for its role within Hg biogeochemical cycling. These findings offer a strong theoretical basis for the application of fungi in the bioremediation of Hg-contaminated envionments.

Abstract:I present evidence indicating that a subset of spring females in the social wasp Polistes dominulus do not initiate colonies but rather ‘sit and wait’ to adopt colonies initiated and abandoned by other conspecifics. These results are, to my knowledge, the first to demonstrate conclusively this alternative reproductive strategy in social wasps. Individuals engaging in the sit–and–wait strategy behave selfishly by adopting the most mature nests available; such nests will produce workers sooner than less mature nests and, consequently, are more likely to survive. The sit–and–wait reproductive strategy may safeguard an individual from early–season, foraging–related mortality as well as reduce early–season energy expenditure.

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) and its compounds are one of the most dangerous environmental pollutants and Hg pollution exists in soils in different degrees over the world. Phytoremediation of Hg-contaminated soils has attracted increasing attention for the advantages of low investment, in-situ remediation, potential economic benefits and so on. Searching for the hyperaccumulator of Hg and its application in practice become a research hotspot. In this context, we review the current literatures that introduce various experimental plant species for accumulating Hg and aided techniques improving the phytoremediation of Hg-contaminated soils. Experimental plant species for accumulating Hg and accumulation or translocation factor of Hg are listed in detail. The translocation factor (TF) is greater than 1.0 for some plant species, however, the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) is greater than 1.0 for Axonopus compressus only. Plant species, soil properties, weather condition, and the bioavailability and heterogeneity of Hg in soils are the main factors affecting the phytoremediation of Hg-contaminated soils. Chemical accelerator kinds and promoting effect of chemical accelerators for accumulating and transferring Hg by various plant species are also discussed. Potassium iodide, compost, ammonium sulphate, ammonium thiosulfate, sodium sulfite, sodium thiosulfate, hydrochloric acid and sulfur fertilizer may be selected to promote the absorption of Hg by plants. The review introduces transgenic gene kinds and promoting effect of transgenic plants for accumulating and transferring Hg in detail. Some transgenic plants can accumulate more Hg than non-transgenic plants. The composition of rhizosphere microorganisms of remediation plants and the effect of rhizosphere microorganisms on the phytoremediation of Hg-contaminated soils are also introduced. Some rhizosphere microorganisms can increase the mobility of Hg in soils and are beneficial for the phytoremediation.

Abstract:Paspalum distichum L. was tested to evaluate their phytoremediation capacity for Hg contaminated soil through analyzing the dissipation of Hg in soil through a greenhouse study by using self-made rhizos box. Original soil samples were collected at Hg mining site with serious Hg contamination and a control site, respectively. Planting of P. distichum. L last for 60 days. Soil and plant samples were collected from four periods (0 d, 20 d, 40 d, and 60 d) and soil samples were collected from five different rhizosphere distance in horizontal direction (0–2 cm, 2–4cm, 4–6cm, 6–8cm, 8–10cm). The results showed that the presence of P. distichum. L significantly accelerated the Hg dissipation in soil compared with control. Hg concentration in the rhizospheric soil was affected by the plant growth period and the distance to the plant roots. The closer of soil to the root of P. distichum. L, the lower mercury concentration in soil. During the 60-day growing period, the concentrations of total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) reduced by 45% and 64%, respectively, in the rhizosphere (0–2cm) of Hg contaminated soil. However, MeHg concentration was increased near the roots (0–4 cm) during the initial growing period (0–20 d), which may be attributed to the influence of root exudates. Root is the major part for Hg accumulation in P. distichum. L. The low ratio between Hg concentrations in underground and aboveground tissues indicated that it seemed difficult for Hg translocation from root to shoot. The highest THg (9.71 ± 3.09 μg·g-1) and MeHg (26.97 ± 0.98 ng·g-1) value in root of P. distichum. L were observed at the 20th day when P. distichum. L grown in Hg contaminated soil. The results of chemical fractions analyses showed that elemental Hg and residual Hg were the two major speciations followed by organic bound Hg in the Hg contaminated soil, which indicated the high bioavailability and ecological potential risk of Hg in Hg contaminated soil.

Abstract:1. Phytoremediation is a promising technique for removing or stabilizing metal ions from metallic trace elements (MTEs) contaminated soils. Despite the significant role of roots in plant growth and survival, limited information is available on the functional covariation of root traits under MTE stress, and linkages between root resource-use strategies and phytoremediation functioning. 2. Sixteen root traits were measured across 11 trees and shrubs grown in Pb-Zn mine tailings in Southeastern China, to examine whether a hypothesized root economics spectrum (RES) exists under extremely high levels of multiple MTEs stress and evaluate the importance of root functional traits in explaining phytoremediation functioning. 3. Our findings offer evidence supporting the widely accepted resource-use strategy of acquisitive-conservative. Furthermore, we have identified a distinct dimension of RES representing the trade-off between root system size and root tissue density. This new dimension highlights the critical importance of root size, shape and proliferation strategy in the context of metal-contaminated soil. Moreover, a trade-off between root cadmium concentration and root dry matter content was observed, which implies the existence of a presumable biomass cost for MTEs accumulation. 4. We identified specific key root traits and their contributions to MTE translocation and bioconcentration, and established linkages between root resource-use strategy and phytoremediation: roots with more acquisitive traits promote MTE translocation, while conservative roots foster bioconcentration. In addition, acquisitive roots usually exhibit lower biomass costs for accumulating MTEs than do conservative roots. 5. Synthesis and applications. Our results highlight the important role of root size-related traits in the root economics spectrum (RES) framework in metal-contaminated soil. Furthermore, we discovered that woody species exhibit different capacities for accumulating or translocating metallic trace elements (MTEs), depending on their root system shapes and their position on axis of RES. These findings provide valuable support for the accurate selection of suitable plant species for ecological restoration purposes. And they hold significant potential in guiding the development of efficient phytoremediation strategies specifically targeting sites contaminated with MTEs.
