Abstract:An explicit formula for the $A$-polynomial of the knot having Conway's notation $C(2n,4)$ is computed up to repeated factors. Our polynomial contains exactly the same irreducible factors as the $A$-polynomial defined in~\cite{CCGLS1}.

Torus knots, the A-polynomial, and SL(2,C)

Abstract:The A-polynomial of a knot is defined in terms of SL(2,C) representations of the knot group, and encodes information about essential surfaces in the knot complement. In 2005, Dunfield-Garoufalidis and Boyer-Zhang proved that it detects the unknot using Kronheimer-Mrowka's work on the Property P conjecture. Here we use more recent results from instanton Floer homology to prove that a version of the A-polynomial distinguishes torus knots from all other knots, and in particular detects the torus knot T_{a,b} if and only if one of |a| or |b| is $2$ or both are prime powers. These results enable progress towards a folklore conjecture about boundary slopes of non-torus knots. Finally, we use similar ideas to prove that a knot in the 3-sphere admits infinitely many SL(2,C)-abelian Dehn surgeries if and only if it is a torus knot, affirming a variant of a conjecture due to Sivek-Zentner.

Abstract:The A-polynomial encodes hyperbolic geometric information on knots and related manifolds. Historically, it has been difficult to compute, and particularly difficult to determine A-polynomials of infinite families of knots. Here, we compute A-polynomials by starting with a triangulation of a manifold, then using symplectic properties of the Neumann-Zagier matrix encoding the gluings to change the basis of the computation. The result is a simplification of the defining equations. We apply this method to families of manifolds obtained by Dehn filling, and show that the defining equations of their A-polynomials are Ptolemy equations which, up to signs, are equations between cluster variables in the cluster algebra of the cusp torus.

Negative amphichiral knots and the half-Conway polynomial

Abstract:In 1979, Hartley and Kawauchi proved that the Conway polynomial of a strongly negative amphichiral knot factors as $f(z)f(-z)$. In this paper, we normalize the factor $f(z)$ to define the half-Conway polynomial. First, we prove that the half-Conway polynomial satisfies an equivariant skein relation, giving the first feasible computational method, which we use to compute the half-Conway polynomial for knots with 12 or fewer crossings. This skein relation also leads to a diagrammatic interpretation of the degree-one coefficient, from which we obtain a lower bound on the equivariant unknotting number. Second, we completely characterize polynomials arising as half-Conway polynomials of knots in $S^3$, answering a problem of Hartley-Kawauchi. As a special case, we construct the first examples of non-slice strongly negative amphichiral knots with determinant one, answering a question of Manolescu. The double branched covers of these knots provide potentially non-trivial torsion elements in the homology cobordism group.

Abstract:We describe a correspondence between augmentations and certain representations of the knot group. The correspondence makes the 2-variable augmentation polynomial into a generalization of the classical $A$-polynomial. It also associates to an augmentation a rank, which is bounded by the bridge number and shares its behavior under connect sums. We also study augmentations with rank equal to the braid index.

Abstract:Recently, Kashaev and the first author defined a sequence $V_n$ of 2-variable knot polynomials with integer coefficients, coming from the $R$-matrix of a rank 2 Nichols algebra, the first polynomial been identified with the Links--Gould polynomial. In this note we present the results of the computation of the $V_n$ polynomials for $n=1,2,3,4$ and discover applications and emerging patterns, including unexpected Conway mutations that seem undetected by the $V_n$-polynomials as well as by Heegaard Floer Homology and Khovanov Homology. Smooth Knots with Odd Quadratic Term of the Conway Polynomial Have Inscribed Trefoils

Abstract:An inscribed knot is formed by polygonally connecting points lying on a knot $\gamma$ in parametric order, then closing the path by connecting the first and final points. The stick-knot number of a knot type K is the minimum number of line segments needed to polygonally form some knot with the same homotopy type. The stick-knot number of a trefoil is 6. Cole Hugelmeyer studied the manifold $M$ consisting of 6 points lying on a triangular prism and found that by intersecting a perturbation of $M'$, twisting the top of the prism, with $Q_\gamma$, the manifold of 6-tuples of points lying on $\gamma$, any analytic knot with nontrivial quadratic term of its Conway polynomial has an inscribed trefoil. We show that by using a perturbation of the double-cover of the orientation class $[M \cap Q_\gamma]$ and analysis of planar configurations, an analogous result holds for a class of smooth knots with odd quadratic term. We also show that in the analytic case, there are both inscribed left and right-handed trefoils.

Abstract:Abstract The AJ Conjecture relates a quantum invariant, a minimal order recursion for the colored Jones polynomial of a knot (known as the $$\hat{A}$$ A ^ polynomial), with a classical invariant, namely the defining polynomial A of the $${\mathrm {PSL}_2(\mathbb {C})}$$ PSL 2 ( C ) character variety of a knot. More precisely, the AJ Conjecture asserts that the set of irreducible factors of the $$\hat{A}$$ A ^ -polynomial (after we set $$q=1$$ q = 1 , and excluding those of L -degree zero) coincides with those of the A -polynomial. In this paper, we introduce a version of the $$\hat{A}$$ A ^ -polynomial that depends on a planar diagram of a knot (that conjecturally agrees with the $$\hat{A}$$ A ^ -polynomial) and we prove that it satisfies one direction of the AJ Conjecture. Our proof uses the octahedral decomposition of a knot complement obtained from a planar projection of a knot, the R -matrix state sum formula for the colored Jones polynomial, and its certificate.

Abstract:Dunfield-Garoufalidis and Boyer-Zhang proved that the A-polynomial of a nontrivial knot in $S^{3}$ is nontrivial. In this paper, we use holonomy perturbations to prove the non-triviality of the A-polynomial for a nontrivial, null-homotopic knot in an irreducible 3-manifold. Also, we give a strong constraint on the A-polynomial of a knot in the 3-sphere.

Abstract:Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications, Ahead of Print. As a generalization of the classical knots, knotoids deal with the open ended knot diagram in a surface. In recent years, many polynomial invariants for knotoids appeared, such as the bracket polynomial, the index polynomial and the [math]th polynomial. In this paper, we introduce a new polynomial invariant [math]-polynomial for knotoids and discuss some properties of the [math]-polynomial. Finally, we construct a family of knotoid diagrams which can be distinguished from each other by the [math]-polynomial but cannot be distinguished by the index polynomial and the [math]th polynomial.

On geometric bases for quantum A-polynomials of knots

Abstract:A simple geometric way is suggested to derive the Ward identities in the Chern-Simons theory, also known as quantum $A$- and $C$-polynomials for knots. In quasi-classical limit it is closely related to the well publicized augmentation theory and contact geometry. Quantization allows to present it in much simpler terms, what could make these techniques available to a broader audience. To avoid overloading of the presentation, only the case of the colored Jones polynomial for the trefoil knot is considered, though various generalizations are straightforward. Restriction to solely Jones polynomials (rather than full HOMFLY-PT) is related to a serious simplification, provided by the use of Kauffman calculus. Going beyond looks realistic, however it remains a problem, both challenging and promising.

Abstract:We calculate the twisted Alexander polynomials of $(-2,3,2n+1)$-pretzel knots associated to their holonomy representations. As a corollary, we obtain new supporting evidences of Dunfield, Friedl and Jackson's conjecture, that is, the twisted Alexander polynomials of hyperbolic knots associated to their holonomy representations determine the genus and fiberedness of the knots.

Abstract:The central question of knot theory is that of distinguishing links up to isotopy. The first polynomial invariant of links devised to help answer this question was the Alexander polynomial (1928). Almost a century after its introduction, it still presents us with tantalizing questions such as Fox's conjecture (1962) that the absolute values of the coefficients of the Alexander polynomial $\Delta_L(t)$ of an alternating link $L$ are unimodal. Fox's conjecture remains open in general, with special cases settled by Hartley (1979) for two-bridged knots, by Murasugi (1985) for a family of alternating algebraic links, and by Ozsváth and Szabó (2003) for the case of genus $2$ alternating knots, among others. We settle Fox's conjecture for special alternating links. We do so by proving that a certain multivariate generalization of the Alexander polynomial of special alternating links is Lorentzian. As a consequence, we obtain that the absolute values of the coefficients of $\Delta_L(t)$, where $L$ is a special alternating link, form a log-concave sequence with no internal zeros. In particular, they are unimodal.

Abstract:The $C$-function of $T$-adic exponential sums is studeid. An explicit arithmetic bound is established for the Newton polygon of the $C$-function. This polygon lies above the Hodge polygon. It gives a sup-Hodge bound of the $C$-function of $p$-power order exponential sums.

Abstract:We investigate a polynomial factorization problem which naturally arises in Hartley's factorization condition on the Alexander polynomial of freely periodic knots. We give a number-theoretic interpretation of this factorization condition, which allows for efficient computation. As an application, we prove that any polynomial which is not a product of cyclotomic polynomials can be the Alexander polynomial of a freely $p$-periodic knot for only finitely many $p$. As a demonstration of the computational efficiency of these methods, we also show that the Alexander polynomial of any freely-periodic L-space knot with genus at most 16 must be a product of cyclotomic polynomials. We conjecture that any periodic or freely periodic L-space knot must be an iterated torus knot.

Abstract:Twisted torus knots are a generalization of torus knots, obtained by introducing additional full twists to adjacent strands of the torus knots. In this article, we present an explicit formula for the Alexander polynomial of twisted torus knots. Our approach utilizes a presentation of the knot group of twisted torus knots combined with Fox's free differential calculus. As applications, we provide a lower bound for the genus of certain families of twisted torus knots and identify families of twisted torus knots that are not $L$-space knots.

Abstract:The $AJ$-conjecture for a knot $K \subset S^3$ relates the $A$-polynomial and the colored Jones polynomial of $K$. If a two-bridge knot $K$ satisfies the $AJ$-conjecture, we give sufficient conditions on $K$ for the $(r,2)$-cable knot $C$ to also satisfy the $AJ$-conjecture. If a reduced alternating diagram of $K$ has $\eta_+$ positive crossings and $\eta_-$ negative crossings, then $C$ will satisfy the $AJ$-conjecture when $(r+4\eta_-)(r-4\eta_+)>0$ and the conditions of the main theorem are satisfied.
