Abstract:A study of the dynamics of the positive charges in liquid argon has been carried out in the context of the future massive time projection chambers proposed for dark matter and neutrino physics. Given their small mobility coefficient in liquid argon, the ions spend a considerably longer time in the active volume with respect to the electrons. The positive charge density can be additionally increased by the injection, in the liquid volume, of the ions produced by the electron multiplying devices located in gas argon. The impact of the ion current on the uniformity of the field has been evaluated as well as the probability of the charge signal quenching due to the electron-ion recombination along the drift. The study results show some potential concerns for massive detectors with drift of many meters operated on surface.

Abstract:The Yale-Weizmann collaboration aims to develop a low-radioactivity (low-background) cryogenic noble liquid detector for Dark-Matter (DM) search in measurements to be performed deep underground as for example carried out by the XENON collaboration. A major issue is the background induced by natural radioactivity of present-detector components including the Photo Multiplier Tubes (PMT) made from glass with large U-Th content. We propose to use advanced Thick Gaseous Electron Multipliers (THGEM) recently developed at the Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS). These "hole-multipliers" will measure in a two-phase (liquid/gas) Xe detector electrons extracted into the gas phase from both ionization in the liquid as well as scintillation-induced photoelectrons from a CsI photocathode immersed in LXe. We report on initial tests (in gas) of THGEM made out of Cirlex (Kapton) which is well known to have low Ra-Th content instead of the usual G10 material with high Ra-Th content.

Abstract:In bubble-assisted Liquid Hole Multipliers (LHM), developed for noble-liquid radiation detectors, the stability of the bubble and the electro-mechanical properties of the liquid-to-gas interface play a dominant role in the detector performance. A model is proposed to evaluate the static equilibrium configurations of a bubble sustained underneath a perforated electrode immersed in a liquid. For the first time bubbles were optically observed in LAr; their properties were studied in contact with different material surfaces. This permitted investigating the bubble-electrodynamics via numerical simulations; it was shown that the electric field acts as an additional pressure term on the bubble meniscus. The predictions for the liquid-to-gas interface were successfully validated using X-ray micro-CT in water and in silicone oil at STP. The proposed model and the results of this study are an important milestone towards understanding and optimizing the parameters of LHM-based noble-liquid detectors.

Abstract:An ultimate liquid xenon experiment would be limited in its dark matter science reach by irreducible neutrino backgrounds, which are an exciting signal in their own right. To achieve such sensitivity, other backgrounds that currently plague these detectors must be better mitigated, and extreme care must be taken in the design and construction phases. A 100-tonne xenon target is compelling to search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter, and has capabilities to study coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering and search for neutrinoless double-beta decay signatures. Historically, liquid xenon time projection chambers have scaled to larger target masses with great success. This paper gives an overview of challenges that need to be met for the next generation of detector to obtain a kilotonne$\times$year exposure. Such tasks include the procurement and purification of xenon, radiopure and reliable detector components, sensitive outer detector vetoes, powerful data handling and analyses, and an ability to operate stably for timescales of over a decade.

Abstract:Large Liquid Xenon Time Projection Chambers already heavily contributed to the search of non-baryonic Dark Matter in the form of WIMPs. However, with a sensitivity goal in the 10−48 cm−2 cross section range even more sensitive detectors are required in the near future with lower radioactive background, lower detection threshold, and a much larger target while keeping the costs within reasonable limits. We propose therefore to develop large area cryogenic Gaseous Photo Multiplier to replace the presently used Photo Multiplier Tubes to detect the VUV scintillation light of xenon. Replacing not only the PMT arrays, but also the PTFE reflectors will favor a single phase detector scheme with proportional scintillation in the liquid. Thus, it is expected that besides many technical advantages the sensitivity can be enhanced without increasing the xenon mass.
Study and mitigation of spurious electron emission from cathodic wires in noble liquid time projection chambers

Abstract:Noble liquid radiation detectors have long been afflicted by spurious electron emission from their cathodic electrodes. This phenomenon must be understood and mitigated in the next generation of liquid xenon (LXe) experiments searching for WIMP dark matter or neutrinoless double beta decay, and in the large liquid argon (LAr) detectors for the long-baseline neutrino programmes. We present a systematic study of this spurious emission involving a series of slow voltage-ramping tests on fine metal wires immersed in a two-phase xenon time projection chamber with single electron sensitivity. Emission currents as low as $10^{-18}$ A can thus be detected by electron counting, a vast improvement over previous dedicated measurements. Emission episodes were recorded at surface fields as low as $\sim$10 kV/cm in some wires and observed to have complex emission patterns, with average rates of 10-200 counts per second (c/s) and outbreaks as high as $\sim$10$^6$ c/s. A fainter, less variable type of emission was also present in all untreated samples. There is evidence of a partial conditioning effect, with subsequent tests yielding on average fewer emitters occurring at different fields for the same wire. We find no evidence for an intrinsic threshold particular to the metal-LXe interface which might have limited previous experiments up to fields of at least 160 kV/cm. The general phenomenology is not consistent with enhanced field emission from microscopic filaments, but it appears instead to be related to the quality of the wire surface in terms of corrosion and the nature of its oxide layer. This study concludes that some surface treatments, in particular nitric acid cleaning for stainless steel wires, can bringing about at least order-of-magnitude improvements in overall electron emission rates, and this should help the next generation of detectors achieve the required electrostatic performance.

Abstract:In the near future there will be the request for very large liquid Xenon (LXe) detectors for Dark Matter (DM) searches in the 50-ton range. To avoid an impractically long, single drift space of a dual-phase detector, it seems beneficial to use the single-phase technique. Since electrons then can drift in any direction, we can segment the homogeneous medium and thus avoid an excessive maximum drift path of order 4 m. The shorter detector length has several benefits, e.g. requiring a lower cathode voltage for the same drift field. We can easily split the TPC into two regions with the cathode in the center and two anodes at the top and bottom. One also can use multiple TPCs stacked on top of each other in the same liquid volume to reduce the maximum drift length even further. A further division of the drift space by installing an additional anode in the center would require S2 photons to traverse the liquid for several times the Rayleigh scattering length in LXe, which is only 30–40 cm. This seems to be excessive for good x-y localization. We therefore suggest a geometry of two independent TPCs with two drift spaces each. Despite earlier publications concerns persisted about the effect of shadowing. A detailed FEM model of the anode regions shows that with an aligned wire arrangement the drifting electrons impinge sideways on the anode in a narrow angular range of width 15°–20°. Most S2 photons are emitted in full view of the close-by PMT array. About 37% of the S2 photons are shadowed by the anode wire out of which 30% will be reflected back again on the gold plating of the wires. Thus we can observe 74% of the total S2 light. Compared to a dual-phase detector, however, we do not suffer from the extraction efficiency, sometimes reported as low as 50%.

Abstract:The Liquid Xenon Time Projection Chamber (LXeTPC) is often seen as an ideal detector for the direct Dark Matter (DM) search. In such experiments an efficient gamma-ray background discrimination is essential. This can be achieved by distinguishing the ionization density, different for gamma-rays and Nuclear Recoils. Two quantities are used for this measurement, the direct scintillation light generated by the ionizing event, and the free charges swept away by an electric field before recombination occurs. Present LXe detectors apply the Dual Phase principle, i.e. the charges are extracted into the gas phase and are measured by the proportional light they produce in a strong electric field in the gas. With ever growing dimensions of the detectors it is difficult to meet the tight mechanical tolerances required.Proportional scintillation also occurs in the liquid phase, although at much higher field strengths. Such field strengths can be reached in the 1/r field close to thin wires. All the limitations due to the extraction of electrons into the gas phase are avoided. Since the liquid level has not to be crossed, the design of the detector becomes simpler with many advantages over Dual Phase detectors. Our initial tests clearly show the pulses. They are much shorter, and their length is limited by longitudinal diffusion of the drifting charges. The threshold for proportional light production seems significantly lower, and estimates of the gain are more favorable than previously predicted. We attribute these discrepancies to our improved liquid purity.
A LN$_2$ Based Cooling System for a Next Generation Liquid Xenon Dark Matter Detector

Abstract:In recent years cooling technology for Liquid Xenon (LXe) detectors has advanced driven by the development of Dark Matter (DM) detectors with target mass in the 100 - 1,000 kg range. The next generation of DM detectors based on LXe will be in the 50,000 kg (50 t) range requiring more than 1 kW of cooling power. Most of the prior cooling methods become impractical at this level. For cooling a 50 t scale LXe detector, a method is proposed in which Liquid Nitrogen (LN$_2$) in a small local reservoir cools the xenon gas via a cold finger. The cold finger incorporates a heating unit to provide temperature regulation. The proposed cooling method is simple, reliable, and suitable for the required long-term operation for a rare event search. The device can be easily integrated into present cooling systems, e.g. the 'Cooling Bus' employed for the PandaX I and II experiments. It is still possible to cool indirectly with no part of the cooling or temperature control system getting in direct contact with the clean xenon in the detector. Also the cooling device can be mounted at a large distance, i.e. the detector is cooled remotely from a distance of 5 - 10 m. The method was tested in a laboratory setup at Columbia University to carry out different measurements with a small LXe detector and behaved exactly as predicted.

Abstract:Noble liquid detectors have become an attractive option for exploring physics beyond the standard model. Current experiments are using these detectors to search for dark matter interactions, neutrinoless double beta decay, and other phenomena. Improved energy resolution can be leveraged from an optimized combination of two detection channels: ionization and scintillation. Experimentally, a microscopic anti-correlation behavior between these signals has been observed, but it has not been described from first principles. Making measurements in a third channel would provide useful information about the microscopic anti-correlation phenomenon. Work is currently underway at Drexel University to develop solid argon and xenon bolometers, which would be able to utilize a heat channel in addition to ionization and scintillation. Present efforts are aimed at developing a method for growing small noble solid samples via vapor deposition onto a substrate over a wide range of temperatures down to 10 K. Understanding the sample growth is the first step to develop techniques for integrating detector components to measure ionization and scintillation signals. This will allow for improved characterization of noble solids as detector media. In the future, efforts will be focused on the growth of these detectors in the Drexel dilution refrigerator, where samples can be cooled to 20 mK to include bolometric measurements for the simultaneous readout of the three detection channels.

Abstract:Recent work from the last years has raised the possibility that a portion of Dark Matter could consist of exotic particles, such as axion (anti)quark nuggets (AQN, A\bar{Q}N). After a brief review outlining the main features of axion antiquark nuggets, we explore potential experimental signatures that can be leveraged to search for these stable supermassive particles in future surface and underground experiments using large liquid detectors. These expected signals are discussed in relation to the specific characteristics of each detection system.

Abstract:Two-phase noble liquid detectors, with large target masses and effective background reduction, are currently leading the dark matter direct detection for WIMP masses above a few GeV. Due to their sensitivity to single ionized electron signals, these detectors were shown to also have strong constraints for sub-GeV dark matter via their scattering on electrons. In fact, the most stringent direct detection constraints for sub-GeV dark matter down to as low as ~5 MeV come from noble liquid detectors, namely XENON10, DarkSide-50, XENON100 and XENON1T, although these experiments still suffer from high background at single or a few electron level. LBECA is a planned 100-kg scale liquid xenon detector with significant reduction of the single and a few electron background. The experiment will improve the sensitivity to sub-GeV dark matter by three orders of magnitude compared to the current best constraints.

Abstract:A new method for the experimental study of ionization loss of relativistic negatively charged particles moving in a crystal in the channeling regime using a semiconductor surface-barrier detector with smoothly tunable thickness of the depleted layer is proposed. The thickness of the depleted layer in a flat semiconductor detector can be smoothly regulated by the value of the bias voltage applied to the detector. Therefore, the energy distribution of the ionization loss of relativistic particles which cross the detector and move in the channeling regime in the detector crystal can be measured along the path of the particles by varying the bias voltage of the detector and the dechanneling length can be found. Available literature data on experimental and theoretical researches of the dechanneling length are reviewed. The significant disagreement between the experimental and theoretical data is noted. Comparison of experimental data obtained by the detector-target with smoothly tunable thickness of the depleted layer with calculations can help to develop theoretical description of the dynamics of motion of negatively charged particles channeling in a crystal. A better understanding of the dechanneling length properties can be useful in the production of positrons and other particles such as neutrons by an electron beam in crystals, as well as in the development of crystalline undulators, and in the crystal-based extraction of electron beams from a synchrotron.

Abstract:We present a possible design of future large-scale dark matter detector using liquid xenon. A low energy threshold is achieved by using a large CsI-coated internal photocathode for primary light collection. A focusing field, in the active volume and an electron focusing structure at the liquid surface, are used to transport free-electrons to the luminescence field. A 3D reconstruction of the events can be achieved by timing and location of the luminescent signal. A liquid xenon Compton veto and self-shield are integrated in the compact design. This detector could be used to probe most of the SUSY predicted dark matter. ZEPLIN IV can be initially tested at Boulby and then be moved to the USA to operate at a US deep underground science and engineering laboratory.

Abstract:We review the current status of liquid noble gas radiation detectors with energy threshold in the keV range, wich are of interest for direct dark matter searches, measurement of coherent neutrino scattering and other low energy particle physics experiments. Emphasis is given to the operation principles and the most important instrumentation aspects of these detectors, principally of those operated in the double-phase mode. Recent technological advances and relevant developments in photon detection and charge readout are discussed in the context of their applicability to those experiments.

Abstract:The charge readout of a liquid xenon (LXe) detector via proportional scintillation in the liquid phase was first realized by the Waseda group 40 years ago, but the technical challenges involved were overwhelming. Although the tests were successful, this method was finally discarded and eventually nearly forgotten. Currently, this approach is not considered for large LXe dark matter detectors. Instead, the dual-phase technology was selected despite many limitations and challenges. In two indepen-dent studies, two groups from Columbia University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University reevaluated proportional scintillation in the liquid phase. Both studies established the merits for very large LXe detectors, but the Columbia group also encountered apparent limitations, namely the shadowing of the light by the anode wires, and a depen-dence of the pulse shape on the drift path of the electrons in the anode region. The differences between the two studies, however, are not intrinsic to the technique, but a direct consequence of the chosen geometry. Taking the geomet-rical differences into account, the results match without ambiguity. They also agree with the original results from the Waseda group.
Toward Single Electron Resolution Phonon Mediated Ionization Detectors

Abstract:Experiments seeking to detect rare event interactions such as dark matter or coherent elastic neutrino nucleus scattering are striving for large mass detectors with very low detection threshold. Using Neganov-Luke phonon amplification effect, the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) experiment is reaching unprecedented RMS resolutions of ~ 14 eV$_{ee}$ . CDMSlite is currently the most sensitive experiment to WIMPs of mass $\sim$5 GeV/c$^{2}$ but is limited in achieving higher phonon gains due to an early onset of leakage current into Ge crystals. The contact interface geometry is particularly weak for blocking hole injection from the metal, and thus a new design is demonstrated that allows high voltage bias via vacuum separated electrode. With an increased bias voltage and a $\times$ 2 Luke phonon gain, world best RMS resolution of sigma $\sim$7 eV$_{ee}$ for 0.25 kg (d=75 mm, h=1 cm) Ge detectors was achieved. Since the leakage current is a function of the field and the phonon gain is a function of the applied voltage, appropriately robust interface blocking material combined with thicker substrate (25 mm) will reach a resolution of $\sim$2.8 eV$_{ee}$. In order to achieve better resolution of $\sim$ eV, we are investigating a layer of insulator between the phonon readout surface and the semiconductor crystals.

A Concept for A Dark Matter Detector Using Liquid Helium-4

Abstract:Direct searches for light dark matter particles (mass $<10$ GeV) are especially challenging because of the low energies transferred in elastic scattering to typical heavy nuclear targets. We investigate the possibility of using liquid Helium-4 as a target material, taking advantage of the favorable kinematic matching of the Helium nucleus to light dark matter particles. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to calculate the charge, scintillation, and triplet helium molecule signals produced by recoil He ions, for a variety of energies and electric fields. We show that excellent background rejection can be achieved based on the ratios between different signal channels. We also present some concepts for a liquid-helium-based dark matter detector. Key to the proposed approach is the use of a large electric field to extract electrons from the event site, and the amplification of this charge signal, through proportional scintillation, liquid electroluminescence, or roton emission. The sensitivity of the proposed detector to light dark matter particles is estimated for various electric fields and light collection efficiencies.

Dark Matter Raining on DUNE and Other Large Volume Detectors

Abstract:Direct detection is a powerful means of searching for particle physics evidence of dark matter (DM) heavier than about a GeV with $\mathcal O(kiloton)$ volume, low-threshold detectors. In many scenarios, some fraction of the DM may be boosted to large velocities enhancing and generally modifying possible detection signatures. We investigate the scenario where 100% of the DM is boosted at the Earth due to new attractive long-range forces. This leads to two main improvements in detection capabilities: 1) the large boost allows for detectable signatures of DM well below a GeV at large-volume neutrino detectors, such as DUNE, Super-K, Hyper-K, and JUNO, as possible DM detectors, and 2) the flux at the Earth's surface is enhanced by a focusing effect. In addition, the model leads to a significant anisotropy in the signal with the DM flowing dominantly vertically at the Earth's surface instead of the typical approximately isotropic DM signal. We develop the theory behind this model and also calculate realistic constraints using a detailed GENIE simulation of the signal inside detectors.
