Abstract:Our purpose in this paper is to construct new examples of twisted Brill-Noether loci on curves of genus $g\ge2$. Many of these examples have negative expected dimension. We deduce also the existence of a new region in the Brill-Noether map, whose points support non-empty standard Brill-Noether loci.

Abstract:Using limit linear series on chains of curves, we show that closures of certain Brill-Noether loci contain a product of pointed Brill-Noether loci of small codimension. As a result, we obtain new non-containments of Brill-Noether loci, in particular that dimensionally expected non-containments hold for expected maximal Brill-Noether loci. Using these degenerations, we also give a new proof that Brill-Noether loci with expected codimension $-\rho\leq \lceil g/2 \rceil$ have a component of the expected dimension. Additionally, we obtain new non-containments of Brill-Noether loci by considering the locus of the source curves of unramified double covers.

Abstract:The Brill-Noether theory of curves plays a fundamental role in the theory of curves and their moduli and has been intensively studied since the 19th century. In contrast, Brill-Noether theory for higher dimensional varieties is less understood. It is hard to determine when Brill-Noether loci are nonempty and these loci can be reducible and of larger than the expected dimension. Let $E$ be a semistable sheaf on the projective plane. In this paper, we give an upper bound for $h^0(E)$ in terms of the rank $r$ and the slope $\mu$ of $E$. We show that the bound is achieved precisely when $E$ is a twist of a Steiner bundle. We classify the sheaves $E$ such that $h^0(E)$ is sufficiently close to the upper bound. We determine the nonemptiness, irreducibility and dimension of the Brill-Noether loci in the moduli spaces of sheaves with $h^0(E)$ in this range. When they are nonempty, these Brill-Noether loci are irreducible though almost always of larger than the expected dimension.

Towards Brill-Noether Theory for Spectral Curves

Abstract:We investigate Brill-Noether loci of two kinds of spectral curves: double covers whose branch locus is a canonical divisor and spectral covers of the projective line. Our techniques are based on the Hitchin correspondence and Higgs bundles. For the first kind our results determine the gonality sequence, when the rank of the linear system is much smaller than the genus. For this the curve and the branch divisor are assumed to be general. In the second case we compute dimensions of the finer splitting loci if these spaces are non-empty. We compare this result with the existing literature about general curves with a fixed gonality.

Higher Dimensional Brill-Noether Loci and Moduli for Very Ample Line Bundles

Abstract:In this paper, we study Brill-Noether loci for higher dimensional varieties. Let $M$ be a moduli space of coherent sheaves on $X$. The Brill-Noether loci of $M$ are the closed subsets $\{\mathcal{F} \in M : h^0(X,\mathcal{F}) \geq k+1\}$. When $X$ is a smooth curve and $M = \textbf{Pic}_X^d$, the space of degree $d$ line bundles on $X$, the Brill-Noether loci have a natural determinantal scheme structure coming from a map of vector bundles on $\textbf{Pic}_X^d$, which is the main tool in studying their geometry. In [CMR10], the authors generalize this to the case where $X$ is any variety and $M$ is the moduli space of stable vector bundles on $X$ with fixed invariants but require that $H^i(X,E) = 0$ for all $E \in M$ and $i \geq 2$. We generalize these results by showing how to give a natural determinantal scheme structure to the Brill-Noether loci for any $X$ and any $M$. In doing so we develop the theory of Fitting ideals for a complex which can be used to define natural scheme structures in other cases as well, such as the locus of points where the projective dimension of a coherent sheaf jumps up. As an application of our results, we construct moduli spaces for very ample line bundles on a variety.

Brill-Noether loci of pencils with prescribed ramification on moduli of curves and on Severi varieties on $K3$ surfaces

Abstract:Under the assumption that the adjusted Brill-Noether number $\widetilde{\rho}$ is at least $-g$, we prove that the Brill-Noether loci in $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ of pointed curves carrying pencils with prescribed ramification at the marked points have a component of the expected codimension with pointed curves having Brill-Noether varieties of pencils of the minimal dimension. As an application, the map from the Hurwitz scheme to $\mathcal{M}_g$ is dominant if $n+\widetilde{\rho} \geq 0$ and generically finite otherwise, settling a variation of a classical problem of Zariski. In the second part of the paper, we study the analogous loci of curves in Severi varieties on $K3$ surfaces, proving existence of curves with non-general behaviour from the point of view of Brill-Noether theory. This extends previous results of Ciliberto and the first named author to the ramified case. We apply these results to study correspondences and cycles on $K3$ surfaces in relation to Beauville-Voisin points and constant cycle curves.

Abstract:Recently the Brill–Noether theory of curves C of both fixed genus and gonality was established. In particular, in this theory (now called the Hurwitz–Brill–Noether theory), all irreducible components of the variety of complete linear series of a fixed degree and dimension on C are obtained from the closures of certain so-called "Brill–Noether splitting loci" (loci which have a rather succinct description). In this paper, a method previously invented for the construction of some of these irreducible components is applied to get simply designed varieties inside the difference between these splitting loci and their closures, i.e., inside the boundary of the splitting loci.

Maximal Brill--Noether loci via the gonality stratification

Abstract:We study the restriction of Brill-Noether loci to the gonality stratification of the moduli space of curves of fixed genus. As an application, we give new proofs that Brill-Noether loci with $\rho=-1$ have distinct support, and for fixed $r$ give lower bounds on when one direction of the non-containments of the Maximal Brill-Noether Loci Conjecture hold for Brill-Noether loci of rank $r$ linear systems. Using these techniques, we also show that Brill-Noether loci corresponding to rank $2$ linear systems are maximal as soon as $g\ge 28$ and prove the Maximal Brill-Noether Loci Conjecture for $g=20$.

Abstract:A Brill-Noether locus is a subscheme of the moduli of bundles E over a curve C defined by requiring E to have a given number of sections, or homomorphisms from another bundle. There are a number of different types, that can be treated by determinantal methods, with symmetry or skewsymmetry arising from Serre duality. They have many beautiful applications to curves, K3 surfaces and Fano 3-folds.

Abstract:A Brill-Noether degeneracy locus is closure in $\Pic^d(C)$ of the locus of line bundles with a specified rank function $r(a,b) = h^0(C,L(-ap-bq))$. These loci generalize the classical Brill-Noether loci $W^r_d(C)$ as well as Brill-Noether loci with imposed ramification. For general $(C,p,q)$ we determine the dimension, singular locus, and intersection class of Brill-Noether degeneracy loci, generalizing classical results about $W^r_d(C)$. The intersection class has a combinatorial interpretation in terms of the number of reduced words for a permutation associated to the rank function, or alternatively the number of saturated chains in the Bruhat order. The essential tool is a versality theorem for a certain pair of flags on $\Pic^d(C)$, conjectured by Melody Chan and the author.

Abstract:We explain a strategy for distinguishing Brill-Noether loci in the moduli space of curves by studying the lifting of linear systems on curves in polarized K3 surfaces, which motivates a conjecture identifying the maximal Brill-Noether loci with respect to containment. Via an analysis of the stability of Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles, we obtain new lifting results for linear systems of rank 3 which suffice to prove the maximal Brill-Noether loci conjecture in genus 9-19, 22, and 23.

Abstract:New local and global non-abelian zeta functions for elliptic curves are studied using certain refined Brill-Noether loci in moduli spaces of semi-stable bundles. Examples of these zeta functions and a justification of using only semi-stable bundles are given too. We end this paper with an appendix on the so-called Weierstrass Groups for general curves, which is motivated by a construction of Euler systems from torsion points (of elliptic curves).

Abstract:Given a family $\pi:\mc{X} \rightarrow B$ of smooth projective varieties, a closed fiber $\mc{X}_o$ and an invertible sheaf $\mc{L}$ on $\mc{X}_o$, we compare the Hodge locus in $B$ corresponding to the Hodge class $c_1(\mc{L})$ with the locus of points $b\,\in\, B$ such that $\mc{L}$ deforms to an invertible sheaf $\mc{L}_b$ on $\mc{X}_b$ with at least $h^0(\mc{L})$--dimensional space of global sections (it is a Brill-Noether type locus associated to $\mc{L}$). We finally give an application by comparing the Brill-Noether locus to a family of curves on a surface passing through a fixed set of points.

Abstract:We establish two-pointed Prym-Brill-Noether loci with special vanishing at two points, and determine their K-theory classes when the dimensions are as expected. The classes are derived by the applications of a formula for the K-theory of certain vexillary degeneracy loci in type D. In particular, we show a two-pointed version of Prym-Petri theorem on the expected dimension in the general case, with a coupled Prym-Petri map. Our approach is inspired by the work on pointed cases by Tarasca, and we generalize unpointed cases by De Concini-Pragacz and Welters.

Abstract:Mukai showed that projective models of Brill–Noether general polarized K3 surfaces of genus 6–10 and 12 are obtained as linear sections of projective homogeneous varieties, and that their hyperplane sections are Brill–Noether general curves. In general, the question, raised by Knutsen, and attributed to Mukai, of whether the Brill–Noether generality of any polarized K3 surface (S,H) is equivalent to the Brill–Noether generality of smooth curves C in the linear system |H| , is still open. Using Lazarsfeld–Mukai bundle techniques, we answer this question in the affirmative for polarized K3 surfaces of genus ≤19 , which provides a new and unified proof even in the genera where Mukai models exist.

Abstract:We consider the loci of curves of genus 2 and 3 admitting a $d$-to-1 map to a genus 1 curve. After compactifying these loci via admissible covers, we obtain formulas for their Chow classes, recovering results of Faber-Pagani and van Zelm when $d=2$. The answers exhibit quasimodularity properties similar to those in the Gromov-Witten theory of a fixed genus 1 curve; we conjecture that the quasimodularity persists in higher genus, and indicate a number of possible variants.

Very stable and wobbly loci for elliptic curves

Abstract:We explore very stable and wobbly bundles, twisted in a particular sense by a line bundle, over complex algebraic curves of genus $1$. We verify that twisted stable bundles on an elliptic curve are not very stable for any positive twist. We utilize semistability of trivially twisted very stable bundles to prove that the wobbly locus is always a divisor in the moduli space of semistable bundles on a genus $1$ curve. We prove, by extension, a conjecture regarding the closedness and dimension of the wobbly locus in this setting. This conjecture was originally formulated by Drinfeld in higher genus.

Abstract:We study when the Picard group of smooth surfaces of degree $d\geq 5$ in $\mathbb{P}^3$ acquires extra classes. In particular we show that the so called exceptional components of the Noether-Lefschetz locus are not Zariski dense. This answers a 1991 question of C. Voisin. We also obtain similar results for the Noether-Lefschetz locus for suitable $(Y,L)$, where $Y$ is a smooth projective threefold and $L$ a very ample line bundle. Both results are applications of the Zilber-Pink viewpoint recently developed by the authors for arbitrary (polarized, integral) variations of Hodge structures.
