Abstract:We introduce an "intermediate branching number"(IBN) which captures the branching of intermediate growth trees, similar in spirit to the well-studied branching number of exponential growth trees. We show that the IBN is the critical threshold for several random processes on trees, and analyze the IBN on some examples of interest. Our main result is an algorithm to find spherically symmetric trees with large IBN inside some permutation wreath products. We demonstrate the usefulness of these trees to the study of intermediate growth groups by using them to get the first tight bounds for the firefighter problem on some inetrmediate growth groups.

Abstract:For every sufficiently well-behaved function $g:\mathbb{R}_{\ge 0}\rightarrow\mathbb{R}_{\ge 0}$ that grows at least linearly and at most exponentially we construct a tree $T$ of uniform volume growth $g$, that is, $$C_1\cdot g(r/4)\le |B_{T}(v,r)| \le C_2\cdot g(4r),\quad\text{for all $r\ge 0$ and $v\in V(T)$},$$ where $B_{T}(v,r)$ denotes the ball of radius $r$ centered at a vertex $v$. In particular, this yields examples of trees of uniform intermediate (i.e. super-polynomial and sub-exponential) volume growth. We use this construction to provide first examples of unimodular random rooted trees of uniform intermediate growth, answering a question by Itai Benjamini. We find a peculiar change in structural properties for these trees at growth $r^{\log\log r}$.

Abstract:Let $(V(u),\, u\in \mathcal{T})$ be a (supercritical) branching random walk and $(\eta_u,\,u\in \mathcal{T})$ be marks on the vertices of the tree, distributed in an i.i.d.\ fashion. Following Aldous and Bandyopadhyay \cite{AB05}, for each infinite ray $\xi$ of the tree, we associate the {\it discounted tree sum} $D(\xi)$ which is the sum of the $e^{-V(u)}\eta_u$ taken along the ray. The paper deals with the finiteness of $\sup_\xi D(\xi)$. To this end, we study the extreme behaviour of the local time processes of the paths $(V(u),\,u\in \xi)$. It answers a question of Nicolas Curien, and partially solves Open Problem 31 of Aldous and Bandyopadhyay \cite{AB05}. We also present several open questions.

Abstract:Branching processes in a varying environment encompass a wide range of stochastic demographic models, and their complete understanding in terms of limit behaviour poses a formidable research challenge. In this paper, we conduct a thorough investigation of such processes within a continuous-time framework, assuming that the reproduction law of individuals adheres to a specific parametric form for the probability generating function. Our six clear-cut limit theorems support the notion of recognizing five distinct asymptotical regimes for branching in varying environments: supercritical, asymptotically degenerate, critical, strictly subcritical, and loosely subcritical.

Abstract:We define a notion of substitution on colored binary trees that we call substreetution. We show that a point fixed by a substreetution may (or not) be almost periodic, and thus the closure of the orbit under the -action may (or not) be minimal. We study one special example: we show that it belongs to the minimal case and that the number of preimages in the minimal set increases just exponentially fast, whereas it could be expected a super-exponential growth. We also give examples of periodic trees without invariant measures on their orbit. We use our construction to get quasi-periodic colored tilings of the hyperbolic disk.

Abstract:Given a general critical or sub-critical branching mechanism, we define a pruning procedure of the associated Lévy continuum random tree. This pruning procedure is defined by adding some marks on the tree, using Lévy snake techniques. We then prove that the resulting sub-tree after pruning is still a Lévy continuum random tree. This last result is proved using the exploration process that codes the CRT, a special Markov property and martingale problems for exploration processes. We finally give the joint law under the excursion measure of the lengths of the excursions of the initial exploration process and the pruned one.

It is known that the size of the largest common subtree (i.e., the maximum agreement subtree) of two independent random binary trees with [math] given labeled leaves is of order between [math] and [math]. We improve the lower bound to order [math] by constructing a common subtree recursively and proving a lower bound for its asymptotic growth. The construction modifies an algorithm proposed by D. Aldous by splitting the tree at the centroid and proceeding recursively.

Abstract:We first revisit and generalize a known result about a doubly exponential sequence that describes the number of k -ary ordered rooted trees of height h where k≥2 is a fixed integer. Such a sequence has the form (tk(h))h≥0 where tk(h)=c(k)kh−1 for each given k and c(k)∈ R . We provide the first detailed analysis of the real number sequence (c(k))k≥2 and show, in particular, that this sequence is strictly decreasing and has a limit 2 when k tends to infinity. We then turn our attention to a more general setting for sequences that describe the number of ordered rooted trees of a given height. This has applications in algorithm analyses where searches in rooted trees are performed. We consider infinite ordered rooted trees in which each ordered rooted subtree induced by all the vertices on levels h∈ N or less is a finite ordered rooted tree of height h of a certain type. In particular, we study those infinite trees T in which each vertex has infinitely many descendants. We first give a complete characterization of those infinite trees for which the number s(Th) of ordered rooted subtrees Tn of height at most h of T is bounded by a polynomial in h . We then present natural lower and upper bounds for s(Th) and use those to obtain a tight threshold function f(h) for which we have s(Th)=Θ(hf(h)) for infinitely many h∈N . This threshold function can be presented in terms of the Lambert W function; the upper branch of the two inverses of the function w↦wew . Finally, we investigate some theoretical properties of s(Th) for those infinite trees T that have a finite width when viewed as partially ordered sets (posets) with the root as the sole maximum element. In particular, we show that for large enough h the function s(Th) is given by a polynomial in h and we determine the degree and the leading coefficient of this polynomial.

Abstract:We study the pruning process developed by Abraham and Delmas (2012) on the discrete Galton-Watson sub-trees of the Lévy tree which are obtained by considering the minimal sub-tree connecting the root and leaves chosen uniformly at rate $\lambda$, see Duquesne and Le Gall (2002). The tree-valued process, as $\lambda$ increases, has been studied by Duquesne and Winkel (2007). Notice that we have a tree-valued process indexed by two parameters the pruning parameter $\theta$ and the intensity $\lambda$. Our main results are: construction and marginals of the pruning process, representation of the pruning process (forward in time that is as $\theta$ increases) and description of the growing process (backward in time that is as $\theta$ decreases) and distribution of the ascension time (or explosion time of the backward process) as well as the tree at the ascension time. A by-product of our result is that the super-critical Lévy trees independently introduced by Abraham and Delmas (2012) and Duquesne and Winkel (2007) coincide. This work is also related to the pruning of discrete Galton-Watson trees studied by Abraham, Delmas and He (2012).

Abstract:We study a model of random binary trees grown "by the leaves" in the style of Luczak and Winkler. If $\tau_n$ is a uniform plane binary tree of size $n$, Luczak and Winkler, and later explicitly Caraceni and Stauffer, constructed a measure $\nu_{\tau_n}$ such that the tree obtained by adding a cherry on a leaf sampled according to $\nu_{\tau_n}$ is still uniformly distributed on the set of all plane binary trees with size $n+1$. It turns out that the measure $\nu_{\tau_n}$, which we call the leaf-growth measure, is noticeably different from the uniform measure on the leaves of the tree $\tau_n$. In fact, we prove that, as $n \to \infty$, with high probability it is almost entirely supported by a subset of only $n^{3 ( 2 - \sqrt{3})+o(1)} \approx n^{0.8038...}$ leaves. In the continuous setting, we construct the scaling limit of this measure, which is a probability measure on the Brownian Continuum Random Tree supported by a fractal set of dimension $ 6 (2 - \sqrt{3})$. We also compute the full (discrete) multifractal spectrum. This work is a first step towards understanding the diffusion limit of the discrete leaf-growth procedure.

Abstract:A BC-tree (block-cutpoint-tree) is a tree (with at least two vertices) where the distance between any two leaves is even. Motivated from the study of the "core" of a graph, BC-trees provide an interesting class of trees. We consider questions related to BC-trees as an effort to make modest progress towards the understanding of this concept. Constructive algorithms are provided for BC-trees with given order and number of leaves whenever possible. The concept of BC-subtrees is naturally introduced. Inspired by analogous work on trees and subtrees, we also present some extremal results and briefly discuss the "middle part" of a tree with respect to the number of BC-subtrees.

Abstract:The goal of this work is to decompose random populations with a genealogy in subfamilies of a given degree of kinship and to obtain a notion of infinitely divisible genealogies. We model the genealogical structure of a population by (equivalence classes of) ultrametric measure spaces (um-spaces) as elements of the Polish space U which we recall. In order to then analyze the family structure in this coding we introduce an algebraic structure on um-spaces (a consistent collection of semigroups). This allows us to obtain a path of collections of subfamilies of fixed kinship h (described as ultrametric measure spaces), for every depth h as a measurable functional of the genealogy. Random elements in the semigroup are studied, in particular infinitely divisible random variables. Here we define infinite divisibility of random genealogies as the property that the h-tops can be represented as concatenation of independent identically distributed h-forests for every h and obtain a Levy-Khintchine representation of this object and a corresponding representation via a concatenation of points of a Poisson point process of h-forests. Finally the case of discrete and marked um-spaces is treated allowing to apply the results to both the individual based and most important spatial populations. The results have various applications. In particular the case of the genealogical (U-valued) Feller diffusion and genealogical (U V -valued) super random walk is treated based on the present work in [DG18b] and [GRG]. In the part II of this paper we go in a different direction and refine the study in the case of continuum branching populations, give a refined analysis of the Laplace functional and give a representation in terms of a Cox process on h-trees, rather than forests.

Abstract:Three standard subtree transfer operations for binary trees, used in particular for phylogenetic trees, are: tree bisection and reconnection ($TBR$), subtree prune and regraft ($SPR$) and rooted subtree prune and regraft ($rSPR$). For a pair of leaf-labelled binary trees with $n$ leaves, the maximum number of such moves required to transform one into the other is $n-\Theta(\sqrt{n})$, extending a result of Ding, Grunewald and Humphries. We show that if the pair is chosen uniformly at random, then the expected number of moves required to transfer one into the other is $n-\Theta(n^{2/3})$. These results may be phrased in terms of agreement forests: we also give extensions for more than two binary trees.

Abstract:Since the work of Aldous and Pitman (1998), several authors have studied the pruning processes of Galton-Watson trees and their continuous analogue Lévy trees. Löhr, Voisin and Winter (2015) introduced the space of bi-measure $\mathbb{R}$-trees equipped with the so-called leaf sampling weak vague topology which allows them to unify the discrete and the continuous picture by considering them as instances of the same Feller-continuous Markov process with different initial conditions. Moreover, the authors show that these so-called pruning processes converge in the Skorokhod space of càdlàg paths with values in the space of bi-measure $\mathbb{R}$-trees, whenever the initial bi-measure $\mathbb{R}$-trees converge. In this paper we provide an application to the above principle by verifying that a sequence of suitably rescaled critical conditioned Galton-Watson trees whose offspring distributions lie in the domain of attraction of a stable law of index $\alpha \in (1,2]$ converge to the $\alpha$-stable Lévy-tree in the leaf-sampling weak vague topology.

Abstract:In [Aldous,Pitman,1998] a tree-valued Markov chain is derived by pruning off more and more subtrees along the edges of a Galton-Watson tree. More recently, in [Abraham,Delmas,2012], a continuous analogue of the tree-valued pruning dynamics is constructed along Lévy trees. In the present paper, we provide a new topology which allows to link the discrete and the continuous dynamics by considering them as instances of the same strong Markov process with different initial conditions. We construct this pruning process on the space of so-called bi-measure trees, which are metric measure spaces with an additional pruning measure. The pruning measure is assumed to be finite on finite trees, but not necessarily locally finite. We also characterize the pruning process analytically via its Markovian generator and show that it is continuous in the initial bi-measure tree. A series of examples is given, which include the finite variance offspring case where the pruning measure is the length measure on the underlying tree.
