Abstract:As an efficient graph analytical tool, graph neural networks (GNNs) have special properties that are particularly fit for the characteristics and requirements of wireless communications, exhibiting good potential for the advancement of next-generation wireless communications. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the interplay between GNNs and wireless communications, including GNNs for wireless communications (GNN4Com) and wireless communications for GNNs (Com4GNN). In particular, we discuss GNN4Com based on how graphical models are constructed and introduce Com4GNN with corresponding incentives. We also highlight potential research directions to promote future research endeavors for GNNs in wireless communications.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore the interaction between graph neural networks (GNNs) and wireless communications, especially how to use GNNs to address the challenges in wireless communications and how to support the practical applications of GNNs in wireless communications by developing new wireless mechanisms. Specifically, the paper focuses on two aspects of problems: 1. **GNN4Com**: That is, how to apply GNNs in wireless communications. This includes but is not limited to tasks such as resource allocation, physical - layer design, and network management. The paper discusses application cases based on different graph model construction methods and emphasizes the advantages of GNNs in reducing the need for training samples, improving the generalization ability of models, and supporting distributed control. 2. **Com4GNN**: That is, how to develop new wireless communication mechanisms to support the efficient implementation of GNNs. This part of the content focuses on solving the challenges faced by GNNs when performing distributed inference in wireless communication environments, such as noise, errors, and high synchronization requirements. The paper proposes a new re - transmission mechanism as part of the solution, aiming to reduce communication overhead while ensuring the accuracy and robustness of prediction results. In summary, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive perspective, covering not only the applications of GNNs in wireless communications but also exploring the new wireless communication mechanisms that need to be developed to adapt to the characteristics of GNNs, thereby promoting future research and development.
