Abstract:In 1993, the global stability of Minkowski spacetime has been proven in the celebrated work of Christodoulou and Klainerman \cite{Ch-Kl} in a maximal foliation. In 2003, Klainerman and Nicòlo \cite{Kl-Ni} gave a second proof of the stability of Minkowski in the case of the exterior of an outgoing null cone. In this paper, we give a new proof of \cite{Kl-Ni}. Compared to \cite{Kl-Ni}, we reduce the number of derivatives needed in the proof, simplify the treatment of the last slice, and provide a unified treatment of the decay of initial data. Also, concerning the treatment of curvature estimates, we replace the vectorfield method used in \cite{Kl-Ni} by the $r^p$--weighted estimates of Dafermos and Rodnianski \cite{Da-Ro}.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### What problem does this paper attempt to solve?
This paper aims to re - prove the stability of Minkowski spacetime in the outer region. Specifically, the author Dawei Shen attempts to simplify and improve the proof given by Klainerman and Nicolò in 2003 [14] through a new method. Compared with the previous proof, the main contributions of this paper include:
1. **Reduce the number of required derivatives**: The new method reduces the number of derivatives required for curvature components and Ricci coefficients.
2. **Simplify the treatment of the final slice**: By using geodesic foliation, the estimation of the final slice is simplified.
3. **Unify the treatment of initial data decay**: A more unified method is provided to deal with the decay of initial data.
4. **Adopt the weighted estimation method**: The \(r^p\)-weighted estimation method introduced by Dafermos and Rodnianski is used instead of the vectorfield method, thus simplifying the treatment of curvature estimation.
### The main theorem of the paper
The main theorem of the paper can be briefly summarized as follows: For a given initial data set \((\Sigma_0, g, k)\), if it is \(s\)-asymptotically flat and satisfies the maximal condition, and satisfies the small - quantity condition in a certain initial - layer region, then there exists a unique future evolution \((M, g)\) such that:
- \((M, g)\) can be covered by a double - null foliation, where the outward - going leaves are complete;
- There is detailed control over all physical quantities related to the double - null foliation.
In particular, when \(s = 4\), this paper re - obtains the results of [14]; when \(s>7\), the results of the strong peeling properties are re - obtained.
### Method comparison
Compared with the method in [14], the main improvements in this paper are as follows:
1. **Setting of initial conditions**: [14] uses formula (1.6) to fix the initial conditions on the initial hypersurface, while this paper fixes the initial conditions in an initial - layer region near the initial hypersurface.
2. **Curvature estimation**: [14] uses the vectorfield method to estimate the norms of curvature components, while this paper uses the \(r^p\)-weighted estimation method, making the curvature estimation simpler.
3. **Derivative order**: [14] requires second - order derivatives of curvature and third - order derivatives of Ricci coefficients, while this paper only requires first - order derivatives.
4. **Treatment of the final slice**: In order to control the Ricci coefficient derivatives one order more than the curvature, [14] depends on the canonical foliation on the final slice, while this paper simplifies the estimation on the final slice through geodesic foliation.
Through these improvements, this paper not only simplifies the proof process but also can handle more general asymptotic behaviors.
