Abstract:Disentangled black hole microstates are atypical states in holographic CFTs whose gravity duals do not have smooth horizons. If there exist sufficiently many disentangled microstates to account for the entire black hole entropy, then any black hole microstate can be written as a superposition of states without smooth horizons. We show that there exist sufficiently many disentangled microstates to account for almost the entire black hole entropy of a large AdS black hole at the semiclassical limit $G_N\rightarrow 0$. In addition, we also argue that in generic quantum many-body systems with short-ranged interactions, there exist sufficiently many area law states in the microcanonical subspace to account for almost the entire thermodynamic entropy in the standard thermodynamic limit. Area law states are atypical since a typical state should contain volume law entanglement. Furthermore, we also present an explicit way to construct such a set of area law states, and argue that the same construction may also be used to construct disentangled states.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is related to the number of black - hole micro - states and their properties. Specifically, the paper explores whether there are enough "disentangled" black - hole micro - states to explain the entire black - hole entropy. These disentangled micro - states manifest as gravitational dual states without a smooth horizon in holographic conformal field theories (holographic CFTs).
### Main problems of the paper:
1. **Existence of disentangled states**: Are there enough disentangled states to explain almost all of the black - hole entropy of large AdS black holes in the semi - classical limit \( G_N \to 0 \)?
2. **Area - law states in quantum many - body systems**: In the standard thermodynamic limit, are there enough area - law states to explain almost all of the thermodynamic entropy?
### Background and motivation:
- **Typical and atypical states**: In statistical mechanics, typical states are those that will thermalize after a long - time evolution. Atypical states, on the other hand, will not thermalize, and these states are usually difficult to observe in quantum many - body systems.
- **Applications in black - hole physics**: Studying atypical states is particularly important in black - hole physics because they may reveal issues such as the internal structure of black holes and the information paradox. For example, disentangled states may correspond to geometric structures without a smooth horizon, which is different from the smooth horizon predicted by general relativity.
- **Holographic principle**: Through the AdS/CFT correspondence, these atypical states can be studied in holographic conformal field theories. Disentangled states manifest as states with large entanglement deficits on the CFT side, and their gravitational dual states do not have a smooth horizon.
### Main results:
1. **Number of disentangled states**: The paper proves that in the semi - classical limit \( G_N \to 0 \), there are at least \( \exp[S_{\text{micro}} - f(S_{\text{micro}})] \) orthogonal disentangled states, where \( f(x) \in \omega(1) \), that is, \( f(x) \) grows faster than a constant. This means that disentangled states are sufficient to explain the leading term of black - hole entropy.
2. **Number of area - law states**: In the standard thermodynamic limit \( V \to \infty \), if the reflected entropy of the micro - canonical ensemble of a quantum many - body system satisfies the area law (i.e., it grows with \( L^{d - 1} \)), then at least \( \exp[S_{\text{micro}} - O(\log S_{\text{micro}})] \) orthogonal area - law states can be found, and these states can explain the thermodynamic entropy.
### Methods and techniques:
- **Entanglement wedge cross - section**: Use the relationship between the entanglement wedge cross - section and the entanglement of purification to give an upper bound on the entanglement of formation of the micro - canonical ensemble.
- **Recursive exclusion method**: By recursively excluding the already - found disentangled states, gradually construct new disentangled states until the required number is reached.
### Conclusions and discussions:
- **Additivity conjecture**: The relationship between the results of the paper and the additivity conjectures is discussed, pointing out that the above results can be obtained even without assuming additivity.
- **Future directions**: Directions for further research are proposed, including how to verify these results in more general systems and explore other types of atypical states.
Through these studies, the paper not only proves the existence of disentangled states and area - law states but also provides an explicit method for constructing these states, providing a new perspective for understanding black - hole micro - states and quantum gravity.
