Abstract:High-speed communication and accurate sensing are of vital importance for future transportation system. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system has the advantages of high spectrum efficiency and low hardware cost, satisfying the requirements of sensing and communication. Therefore, ISAC is considered to be a promising technology in the future transportation system. However, due to the low transmit power of signal and the influence of harsh transmission environment on radar sensing, the signal to noise ratio (SNR) at the radar receiver is low, which affects the sensing performance. This paper introduces the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) into ISAC system. With IRS composed of M sub-surfaces implemented on the surface of the target. The SNR at the radar receiver is 20lg(M) times larger than the scheme without IRS. Correspondingly, radar detection probability is significantly improved, and Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) for ranging and velocity estimation is reduced. This paper proves the efficiency of IRS enabled ISAC system, which motivates the implementation of IRS to enhance the sensing capability in ISAC system.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: in the future transportation system, how to improve the radar sensing performance of the Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) system, especially under the influence of low - transmit - power signals and harsh transmission environments, improve the Signal - to - Noise Ratio (SNR) of the radar receiver, thereby increasing the radar detection probability and reducing the Cramér - Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) of range and velocity estimation. Specifically, the ISAC system uses low - power communication signals to achieve radar sensing. However, because the signals scatter at the target, the SNR of the radar receiver is low, which affects the sensing performance. To solve this problem, the paper introduces the Intelligent Reflecting Surface (IRS). By adjusting the phases and amplitudes of multiple sub - surfaces on the IRS, the intensity of the echo signal is maximized, thereby significantly improving the SNR of the radar receiver. ### Main contributions: 1. **SNR improvement**: Through the superposition of echo signals by multiple passive reflecting sub - surfaces of the IRS, the power of the echo signal is increased, and the SNR is improved by 20lg(M) times, where M is the number of sub - surfaces. 2. **Detection probability improvement**: Due to the improvement of the SNR, the radar detection probability is significantly increased. 3. **CRLB reduction**: The CRLB of range and velocity estimation decreases with the application of the IRS, further improving the sensing accuracy. ### Formula explanation: - Signal - to - Noise Ratio (SNR) formula: \[ \gamma=\frac{P_t G^2 \sigma \lambda^2\left|\sum_{m = 1}^{M}\beta_m \alpha_m e^{j(\theta_m-\phi_m)}\right|^2}{(4\pi)^3 R^4 L N_0} \] where: - \(P_t\) is the transmit power. - \(G\) is the transmit antenna gain. - \(\sigma\) is the Radar Cross Section (RCS). - \(\lambda\) is the signal wavelength. - \(R\) is the distance between the radar and the target. - \(L\) is the path - loss factor. - \(N_0\) is the noise power spectral density. - \(M\) is the number of sub - surfaces of the IRS. - \(\beta_m,\alpha_m,\theta_m,\phi_m\) are the reflection coefficient, amplitude, phase shift, and incident angle of the \(m\) - th sub - surface respectively. Through the above methods, the paper proves that the IRS - assisted ISAC system can significantly improve radar sensing performance, providing a new solution for high - precision sensing and high - speed communication in future transportation systems.
