In this paper, we present a summary of the research efforts in shared autonomous vehicle systems that have been reported in the literature to date and discuss potential future research directions.

Abstract:The implementation of connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technologies enables a novel computational framework for real-time control actions aimed at optimizing energy consumption and associated benefits. Several research efforts reported in the literature to date have proposed decentralized control algorithms to coordinate CAVs in various traffic scenarios, e.g., highway on-ramps, intersections, and roundabouts. However, the impact of optimally coordinating CAVs on the performance of a transportation network has not been thoroughly analyzed yet. In this paper, we apply a decentralized optimal control framework in a transportation network and compare its performance to a baseline scenario consisting of human-driven vehicles. We show that introducing of CAVs yields radically improved roadway capacity and network performance.

Abstract:Advances in technologies such as sensors, communications, robotics, computer software and hardware are paving the way of imagining the future of transportation system as well as the roadblocks and challenges that need to be overcome. While there have been considerable technology advancements on the vehicle level the objectives of these successes is driver comfort and marketing rather than solving the problem of congestion and mobility on the system level in general. Vehicle automation is attractive to a small group of users, it opens the way to re-imagine the ownership and use of vehicles but also raises safety concerns and doubts as to whether it will have any benefit to alleviating congestion. On the infrastructure level the traffic network system operates as an open loop system with limited feedback and control leading to a highly unbalanced system in space and time. As a result hidden capacities cannot be utilized by planning in a centralized manner. In order to achieve effective management and control of the transportation system information and data are necessary and can only be generated by connecting the infrastructure with transportation users. In this talk we present examples how this connectivity can be achieved, what is the benefit of making decisions in a centralized coordinated manner versus decentralized approaches involving individual greedy users. These examples will identify the potential benefits in moving from the current system to a more coordinated system where connectivity can be used to improve mobility, reduce costs and the impact on the environment.

Abstract:Vehicle control is one of the most critical challenges in autonomous vehicles (AVs) and connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), and it is paramount in vehicle safety, passenger comfort, transportation efficiency, and energy saving. This survey attempts to provide a comprehensive and thorough overview of the current state of vehicle control technology, focusing on the evolution from vehicle state estimation and trajectory tracking control in AVs at the microscopic level to collaborative control in CAVs at the macroscopic level. First, this review starts with vehicle key state estimation, specifically vehicle sideslip angle, which is the most pivotal state for vehicle trajectory control, to discuss representative approaches. Then, we present symbolic vehicle trajectory tracking control approaches for AVs. On top of that, we further review the collaborative control frameworks for CAVs and corresponding applications. Finally, this survey concludes with a discussion of future research directions and the challenges. This survey aims to provide a contextualized and in-depth look at the state of the art in vehicle control for AVs and CAVs, identifying critical areas of focus and pointing out the potential areas for further exploration.

Abstract:Urban intersections, merging roadways, roundabouts, and speed reduction zones along with the driver responses to various disturbances are the primary sources of bottlenecks in corridors that contribute to traffic congestion. The implementation of connected and automated technologies can enable a novel computational framework for real-time control aimed at optimizing energy consumption and travel time. In this paper, we propose a decentralized energy-efficient optimal control framework for two adjacent intersections. We derive a closed-form analytical solution that includes interior boundary conditions and evaluate the effectiveness of the solution through simulation. Fuel consumption and travel time are significantly reduced compared to the baseline scenario designed with conventional fixed time signalized intersections.

Abstract:Automated Vehicles are an integral part of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs) and are expected to play a crucial role in the future mobility services. This paper investigates two classes of self-driving vehicles: (i) Level 4&5 Automated Vehicles (AVs) that rely solely on their on-board sensors for environmental perception tasks, and (ii) Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs), leveraging connectivity to further enhance perception via driving intention and sensor information sharing. Our investigation considers and quantifies the impact of each vehicle group in large urban road networks in Europe and in the USA. The key performance metrics are the traffic congestion, average speed and average trip time. Specifically, the numerical studies show that the traffic congestion can be reduced by up to a factor of four, while the average flow speeds of CAV group remains closer to the speed limits and can be up to 300% greater than the human-driven vehicles. Finally, traffic situations are also studied, indicating that even a small market penetration of CAVs will have a substantial net positive effect on the traffic flows.

Abstract:Emerging vehicle technologies foreshadow a world in which sensors and software will replace humans in the driver’s seat. Connected and autonomous vehicle technologies are no longer a question of “if” but rather of “how” implementation will impact future transportation. This paper explores the safety and operational impacts of connected and autonomous vehicles on future transportation. Safety impacts include enhanced awareness of surroundings, driving assistance, crash avoidance, and reduced human error. Operational impacts include reduced traffic congestion, improved mobility, optimized freight flow and traffic control, etc. The paper also describes the potential challenges and concerns related to system imperfection, cyber security, insurance, mixed traffic flow, and consumer perception. Furthermore, the paper discusses how these advances of technologies will impact the infrastructure of transportation systems and the transportation engineers and professionals that operate and manage them. It offers great insights into the impact of connected and autonomous vehicles on future transportation.

Abstract:Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) are poised to reshape transportation and mobility by replacing humans as the driver and service provider. While the primary stated motivation for vehicle automation is to improve safety and convenience of road mobility, this transformation also provides a valuable opportunity to improve vehicle energy efficiency and reduce emissions in the transportation sector. Progress in vehicle efficiency and functionality, however, does not necessarily translate to net positive environmental outcomes. Here we examine the interactions between CAV technology and the environment at four levels of increasing complexity: vehicle, transportation system, urban system, and society. We find that environmental impacts come from CAV-facilitated transformations at all four levels, rather than from CAV technology directly. We anticipate net positive environmental impacts at the vehicle, transportation system, and urban system levels, but expect greater vehicle utilization and shifts in travel patterns at the society level to offset some of these benefits. Focusing on the vehicle-level improvements associated with CAV technology is likely to yield excessively optimistic estimates of environmental benefits. Future research and policy efforts should strive to clarify the extent and possible synergetic effects from a systems level in order to envisage and address concerns regarding the short- and long-term sustainable adoption of CAV technology.

A Control Framework for Socially-Optimal Emerging Mobility Systems

Abstract:Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) provide the most intriguing opportunity for enabling users to significantly improve safety and transportation efficiency by monitoring network conditions and making better operating decisions. CAVs, however, could alter the tendency to travel, eventually leading to a high traffic demand and causing rebound effects (e.g., increasing vehicle miles traveled). This chapter provides a control framework to distribute travel demand in a given transportation network, resulting in a socially optimal mobility system that travelers would be willing to accept. A "socially optimal mobility system" implies a mobility system that (1) is efficient (in terms of energy consumption and travel time), (2) mitigates rebound effects, and (3) ensures equity in transportation.

Abstract:Integrated chassis control systems represent a significant advancement in the dynamics of ground vehicles, aimed at enhancing overall performance, comfort, handling, and stability. As vehicles transition from internal combustion to electric platforms, integrated chassis control systems have evolved to meet the demands of electrification and automation. This paper analyses the overall control structure of automated vehicles with integrated chassis control systems. Integration of longitudinal, lateral, and vertical systems presents complexities due to the overlapping control regions of various subsystems. The presented methodology includes a comprehensive examination of state-of-the-art technologies, focusing on algorithms to manage control actions and prevent interference between subsystems. The results underscore the importance of control allocation to exploit the additional degrees of freedom offered by over-actuated systems. This paper systematically overviews the various control methods applied in integrated chassis control and path tracking. This includes a detailed examination of perception and decision-making, parameter estimation techniques, reference generation strategies, and the hierarchy of controllers, encompassing high-level, middle-level, and low-level control components. By offering this systematic overview, this paper aims to facilitate a deeper understanding of the diverse control methods employed in automated driving with integrated chassis control, providing insights into their applications, strengths, and limitations.

Abstract:With the development of communication and automation technologies, the great energy-saving potential of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) has gradually been highlighted. By means of interactions with surrounding vehicles and infrastructure, CAVs can automatically plan ecological driving behaviours to significantly reduce energy consumption, which is normally defined as eco-driving. Currently, eco-driving is recognised as an effective method to improve the energy economy of individual CAVs and promote the overall energy economy of transportation without requiring significant hardware investment. After reviewing the scattered eco-driving literature, this study systematically summarizes the state-of-the-art in this field for promoting its future development. The basic principles of eco-driving and energy management systems are firstly discussed to figure out the relationship between eco-driving and powertrain control. Then, related eco-driving studies are classified into three categories according to their applications in terms of single-vehicle scenario, car-following operation, and multi-vehicle co-operation. The key characteristics of various eco-driving studies are in-depth addressed, and the energy-saving potential for cooperative eco-driving is emphasized. Finally, the potential development trends are provided, thereby contributing to the development of eco-driving techniques.

Abstract:Numerous recent innovations have been achieved with the goal of enhancing electric vehicles and the parts that go into them, particularly in the areas of managing energy, battery design and optimization, and autonomous driving. This promotes a more effective and sustainable eco-system and helps to build the next generation of electric car technology. This study offers insights into the most recent research and advancements in electric vehicles (EVs), as well as new, innovative, and promising technologies based on scientific data and facts associated with e-mobility from a technological standpoint, which may be achievable by 2030. Appropriate modeling and design strategies, including digital twins with connected Internet of Things (IoT), are discussed in this study. Vehicles with autonomous features have the potential to increase safety on roads, increase driving economy, and provide drivers more time to focus on other duties thanks to the Internet of Things idea. The enabling technology that entails a car moving out of a parking spot, traveling along a long highway, and then parking at the destination is also covered in this article. The development of autonomous vehicles depends on the data obtained for deployment in actual road conditions. There are also research gaps and proposals for autonomous, intelligent vehicles. One of the many social concerns that are described is the cause of an accident with an autonomous car. A smart device that can spot strange driving behavior and prevent accidents is briefly discussed. In addition, all EV-related fields are covered, including the likely technical challenges and knowledge gaps in each one, from in-depth battery material sciences through power electronics and powertrain engineering to market assessments and environmental assessments.

Abstract:Vehicles, whose functions are enriched with attributes to increase safety, environmental awareness, effectiveness, comfort level and prestige, so that they can play a key role in creating optimal mobility, are now being invented, planned and manufactured for general use. Throughout the full spectrum of transport, vehicles will soon exempt people from the routine of driving. If people do not need to drive their cars, will their driving skills deteriorate or will they entirely fail to develop this skill later on? Is this threatening us in the near future? What are the latest research results and regulations on autonomous vehicles? What are the actual advantages of vehicle automation? We are trying to find the answers to these questions in our article, while analysing and systematizing information from the national and international literature on the development of intelligent vehicles by examining the interaction between various ground transport vehicles, and the related developments on the subject. Our goal is to create automatic intelligent vehicle systems, within the concept of intelligent infrastructures and smart cities. The paper provides an FMEA analysis of intelligent vehicles. To decrease the explored deficiencies in the present system, applicable proposals are formulated about development areas, such as forming a communication between vehicular traffic and railed vehicles. We feel that such developments are important steps in increasing traffic safety, and we regard them as elements of intelligent transport.

Abstract:With the development of communication and control technology, intelligent transportation systems (ITS) have received increasing attention from both industry and academia. However, plenty of studies providing different formulations for ITS depend on Master Control Center and require a high level of hardware configuration. The systematized technologies for distributed architectures are still not explored in detail. In this paper, we proposed a novel distributed cyber–physical system for connected and automated vehicles, and related methodologies are illustrated. Every vehicle in this system is modeled as a double-integrator and supposed to travel along a desired trajectory for maintaining a rigid formation geometry. The desired trajectory is generated by reference leading vehicles using information from multiple sources, while ordinary following vehicles use velocity and position information from their nearest neighbors and sensor information from on-board sensors to correct their own performance. Information graphs are used to illustrate the interaction topology between connected and automated vehicles. Edge computing technology is used to analyze and process information, such that the risk of privacy leaks can be greatly reduced. The performance scaling laws for the network with a one-dimensional information graph are generalized to networks with D -dimensional information graphs, and the results of the experiments show that the performance of the connected and automated vehicles matches very well with analytic predictions. Some design guidelines and open questions are provided for the future study.

Abstract:The rapid improvements in communication and self-driving technology in recent years have made connected autonomous cars an essential component of urban road transit. Connected autonomous vehicles excel in eliminating uncertainties arising from human driving behaviors. Consequently, they alleviate the issue of 'phantom congestion', a phenomenon that significantly impacts traffic efficiency, safety and sustainability while simultaneously enhancing overall traffic flow stability and safety. Moreover, the increasing adoption of connected autonomous vehicles has led to improved driving efficiency, resulting in reduced energy emissions and decreased environmental pollution. This paper endeavors to conduct an extensive review concerning the effects of CAVs on mixed traffic flows, with a primary emphasis on their impact on traffic efficiency and congestion. Additionally, secondary aspects such as stability, safety, and environmental repercussions will be addressed. The article begins with a concise historical account of connected autonomous vehicles and their related technologies. Subsequently, an investigation was conducted into their impact on the mixed traffic environment, along with corresponding policy recommendations. Finally, potential avenues for future research were identified.

Abstract:Autonomous vehicles promise numerous improvements to vehicular traffic: an increase in both highway capacity and traffic flow because of faster response times, less fuel consumption and pollution thanks to more foresighted driving, and hopefully fewer accidents thanks to collision avoidance systems. In addition, drivers can save time for more useful activities. In order for these vehicles to safely operate in everyday traffic or in harsh off-road environments, a multitude of problems in perception, navigation, and control have to be solved. This paper gives an overview of the most current trends in autonomous vehicles, highlighting the concepts common to most successful systems as well as their differences. It concludes with an outlook into the promising future of autonomous vehicles.

Abstract:Recent technological advancements in the automotive and transportation industry established a firm foundation for development and implementation of various connected and automated vehicle solutions around the globe. Wireless communication technologies such as the dedicated short-range communication protocol are enabling information exchange between vehicles and infrastructure. This research paper introduces an intersection management strategy for a corridor with automated vehicles utilizing vehicular trajectory-driven optimization method. Trajectory-Driven Optimization for Automated Driving provides an optimal trajectory for automated vehicles based on current vehicle position, prevailing traffic, and signal status on the corridor. All inputs are used by the control algorithm to provide optimal trajectories for automated vehicles, resulting in the reduction of vehicle delay along the signalized corridor with fixed-time signal control. The concept evaluation through microsimulation reveals that, even with low market penetration (i.e., less than 10%), the technology reduces overall travel time of the corridor by 2%. Further increase in market penetration produces travel time and fuel consumption reductions of up to 19.5% and 22.5%, respectively.

Abstract:Connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) have emerged as a promising solution for enhancing transportation efficiency. However, the increased adoption of CAVs is expected to lead to a rise in transportation demand and, subsequently, higher energy consumption. In this context, electric CAVs (E-CAVs) present a significant opportunity to shape the future of efficient transportation systems. While conventional CAVs possess the potential to reduce fuel consumption, E-CAVs offer similar prospects but through distinct approaches. Notably, the control of acceleration and regenerative brakes in E-CAVs stands out as an area of immense potential for increasing efficiency, leveraging various control methods in conjunction with the cooperative and perception capabilities inherent in CAVs. To bridge this knowledge gap, this paper conducts a comprehensive survey of energy efficiency methods employed in conventional CAVs while also exploring energy efficiency strategies specifically tailored for E-CAVs.
