Abstract:Despite the abundance of Electronic Healthcare Records (EHR), its heterogeneity restricts the utilization of medical data in building predictive models. To address this challenge, we propose Universal Healthcare Predictive Framework (UniHPF), which requires no medical domain knowledge and minimal pre-processing for multiple prediction tasks. Experimental results demonstrate that UniHPF is capable of building large-scale EHR models that can process any form of medical data from distinct EHR systems. We believe that our findings can provide helpful insights for further research on the multi-source learning of EHRs.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem this paper attempts to address is the limitation on the utilization of medical data due to the heterogeneity of Electronic Health Records (EHR). Specifically, different hospitals use different medical coding standards (such as ICD-9, ICD-10, raw text, etc.) and database schemas to store patient records, leading to non-uniform data formats. This heterogeneity not only hinders the development of EHR models but also makes it difficult for multiple medical institutions to conduct multi-source learning, such as transfer learning across different EHR databases or modeling by aggregating EHR data from multiple hospitals. To address this challenge, the paper proposes a universal healthcare prediction framework (UniHPF) that does not require domain-specific medical knowledge and requires minimal preprocessing for various prediction tasks. Experimental results show that UniHPF can build large-scale EHR models capable of handling any form of medical data from different EHR systems. The researchers believe that their findings can provide valuable insights for further research on multi-source learning in EHR.
